The best Wi-Fi smart plug depends on what you want to connect and which smart-home platform you use. For a general-purpose shortlist, consider the TP-Link Tapo P125M/TP15 family for Matter, D-Link PM-01M for Matter with energy monitoring, Kasa EP10 for basic scheduling, Kasa EP25 for energy monitoring, and WiZ Smart Plug as a budget-oriented Wi-Fi option. These are use-case picks, not a verified ranking of the five best products on the market. Check the exact model number before buying: similarly named plugs can have different protocols, features, and ratings.

Five Wi-Fi smart plugs to consider

The comparison below reflects the cited product information and editorial guides, not a new hands-on test. Availability and compatibility can change; confirm the exact U.S. model and current listing before purchase.

Model Best fit What the cited sources establish Check before buying
TP-Link Tapo P125M / TP15 family General use with Matter WIRED discusses a Tapo Matter plug and setup with major platforms. TP-Link’s PW15 page lists Wi-Fi, rating, size, and platform details for that specific model. WIRED’s smart-plug guide; TP-Link PW15 specifications. P125M, TP15, and PW15 are distinct model labels; do not assume one model’s specs apply to another.
D-Link PM-01M Matter plus consumption monitoring D-Link lists Matter, schedules, energy-use tracking, and configurable over-use alerts. Its North American rating is 120 V, 15 A, and 1,800 W. D-Link PM-01M specifications. Check whether your Matter controller and app support the setup and energy-reporting features you want. D-Link says a Matter controller is not included.
Kasa EP10 Basic compact plug WIRED describes a compact design, schedules, scenes, and Alexa and Google Assistant support. TP-Link’s catalog lists the Kasa line and EP10. WIRED’s smart-plug guide; TP-Link smart-plug catalog. The cited material does not establish Matter or energy monitoring for EP10.
Kasa EP25 Energy monitoring in a Kasa plug WIRED identifies EP25 as an energy-monitoring alternative; TP-Link’s catalog includes energy-monitoring models. WIRED’s smart-plug guide; TP-Link smart-plug catalog. EP25 and KP125M are different model labels. Confirm the precise unit, platform support, and pack contents.
WiZ Smart Plug Budget-oriented basic Wi-Fi use TechRadar lists it as a budget pick and notes 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, no energy monitoring, and no Apple HomeKit support. Its guide was updated September 22, 2026. TechRadar’s smart-plug guide. Check current stock, exact model, and compatibility for your region; the cited guide does not establish a current price.

How to choose the right plug

Start with your smart-home platform

Check the exact model’s support for Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, or the platform you use. Matter can make cross-platform setup possible, but the Matter label alone does not guarantee that every platform exposes every feature in the same way. Some setups require a compatible controller or hub. For example, D-Link says a Matter controller is not included with PM-01M, while TP-Link describes setup for PW15 through compatible apps. D-Link PM-01M specifications; TP-Link PW15 specifications.

Make sure the appliance resumes when power returns

A smart plug can cut and restore power; it cannot press an appliance’s buttons or choose a setting. A lamp with a manual on/off switch is usually a better fit than a device that needs a button press after power is restored. Some kettles and coffee machines may not restart automatically, so a schedule could leave them off or in an unexpected state. Check how the appliance behaves after an ordinary power interruption before automating it. WIRED’s smart-plug guide.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Decide whether energy monitoring matters

Monitoring is model-specific. D-Link describes current-use and consumption tracking plus configurable over-use alerts for PM-01M; TP-Link’s catalog identifies certain models as energy-monitoring products. Monitoring can help you observe consumption, but it does not itself guarantee lower bills or savings. D-Link PM-01M specifications; TP-Link smart-plug catalog.

Check the outlet layout and location

Compare the plug’s shape with your outlet, power strip, and any neighboring plug. A bulky body may block an adjacent socket, and recessed outlets can be a poor fit. For outdoor use, choose a plug explicitly rated for outdoor conditions rather than using an indoor model outside; TP-Link’s catalog identifies EP40A as IP64 weatherproof. TP-Link smart-plug catalog.

Match the electrical rating to the load

Read the exact model’s label and manufacturer specifications, then check the appliance’s voltage, current, and power requirements. The PW15 page specifies 120 V, 15 A, and 1,800 W for general/resistive load and describes that model as UL-certified. D-Link lists PM-01M at 120 V, 15 A, and 1,800 W, and describes its construction as UL94-V0 flame-retardant. Those are model-specific manufacturer claims, not universal ratings for smart plugs; a flame-retardant material description is not the same as an independent safety certification. TP-Link PW15 specifications; D-Link PM-01M specifications.

What devices do not work well with smart plugs?

Devices that need a physical control press or mode selection after power is restored are poor candidates. The plug cannot replicate those actions, so automation may fail even if the plug itself is working. Large appliances and equipment in hard-to-reach locations also deserve extra caution: consider whether remote switching is appropriate and whether you can safely disconnect the load if needed. These are practical cautions, not a universal electrical-code rule. WIRED’s smart-plug guide.

Can you control a smart plug away from home?

Remote control generally depends on completing setup, connecting the plug to Wi-Fi, and using the supported app or smart-home platform. A hub or Matter controller may be required for some setups. Confirm the manufacturer’s setup requirements for the exact model; remote access should not be assumed before the plug is properly configured. WIRED’s smart-plug guide.

Check for recalls before installation

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published a recall for Emporia North America smart plugs due to an electric-shock hazard. If you own an Emporia plug, use the official notice to identify affected products and follow its remedy instructions rather than relying on a retailer listing or social post. CPSC recall notice.
