For Linux Mint, choose a Wi-Fi adapter by its exact chipset, hardware revision, and Linux kernel support—not by brand name alone. A USB adapter based on the MediaTek MT7921AU is a documented candidate; the Netgear A7500 is one listed example, but compatibility can depend on its device ID and the kernel installed on your computer. Verify those details before buying.
Which Wi-Fi adapters are worth considering for Linux Mint?
There is no single adapter established as the best choice for every Mint computer. The available compatibility information points to a candidate USB adapter, a vendor-documented alternative, and a separate PCIe path for desktops. None is a universal compatibility guarantee or a comparative performance winner.
| Option | What the available source establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| USB adapter using MediaTek MT7921AU, including the Netgear A7500 as a listed example | A community-maintained compatibility guide says the MT7921AU driver has been in the Linux kernel since 5.18. It lists the A7500 as using this chipset. | Exact adapter revision and device ID, plus the computer’s kernel. The guide notes that device ID affects plug-and-play support. |
| LM Technologies LM842 USB adapter | LM Technologies says mainline Wi-Fi support for the LM842 begins with Linux kernel 6.2. The vendor describes dual-band 802.11ac and Bluetooth 5.0. | Whether the installed kernel and Mint release meet the support requirements, and whether the vendor’s stated features meet your needs. The announcement is not independent testing across Mint releases. |
| Internal PCIe wireless card | Linux Wireless documents PCIe-capable driver families, including Intel iwlwifi and MediaTek mt76. | Exact card chipset, kernel and firmware support, and compatibility with the computer’s available slot and hardware. A driver-family listing does not certify every card or motherboard combination. |
These options are not directly ranked for speed, range, or reliability: the cited sources do not provide comparative performance tests. For the MT7921AU’s kernel support and device-ID caveat, see the USB Wi-Fi in-kernel compatibility guide. For driver-family and bus information, see Linux Wireless’ existing driver list.

Check your Mint release and kernel before choosing
Linux Mint releases use different Ubuntu bases and have different support windows. The Mint versions page lists 22.x releases as based on Ubuntu Noble LTS, with support through April 2029, and 21.x releases as based on Ubuntu Jammy LTS, with support through April 2027. These dates apply to the listed release families; check the current page and your installed edition rather than assuming every Mint installation has the same kernel.

Find your installed Mint version and kernel before shopping. In a terminal, run:
cat /etc/linuxmint/info
uname -r
The first command displays Mint release information; the second reports the running kernel. Compare the kernel version with the specific adapter’s documented minimum. The Linux Mint versions page is the reference for release bases and support dates.

Understand what the MT7921AU support timeline means
The compatibility guide gives these kernel milestones for the MT7921AU:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Linux 5.18: driver support is included in the kernel.
- Linux 5.19: access-point (AP) mode support was added.
- Linux 6.4: peer-to-peer (P2P) support was added.
- Linux 6.14: P2P-device support was added.
These milestones describe driver and operating-mode support, not a promise that every adapter bearing a related retail name will work automatically. Check the adapter’s exact device ID and revision against the guide, particularly if you need a specific mode. The guide is community-maintained, not an official Linux Mint certification.

- WIFI 4 USB NANO DONGLE FOR LIBRE COMPUTER SBCs: Small plug and play 2.4GHz WiFi for single board computers with up to 150Mbps speed. Measuring 19mm x 14mm x 5mm, keep neighboring USB ports unobstructed. Low power design stays within the 500mA power budget of USB 2.0 ports.
- PLUG AND PLAY FOR LINUX: Supports all current Linux LTS versions and Windows. No installation required for most Linux kernels, just insert into any USB 2.0 or higher port and connect to any 2.4GHz wireless network. Compatible with personal computers with USB 2.0 and 3.0 Type A ports. Built on the Linux mac80211 and cfg80211 frameworks, supports in-kernel wireless management.
- LATEST WPA3 SECURITY STANDARDS COMPLIANT: Supports the latest WPA3 SAE security standards. Simultaneous Authentication of Equals provides additional protection from password brute forcing and dictionary attacks. WPA2 / WPA are no longer secure and passwords can be defeated in minutes. 802.1X network access control, and SoftMAC for future extensibility.
- ADVANCED FUNCTIONALITY: AP mode, monitoring/sniffing mode, and 40MHz channels for up to 150Mbps (18.75MB/s) rates via integrated 1T1R 2dB antenna with 18dB transmit power. Configurable MAC to programmable protocol handling.
- PREREQUISITES: 150Mbps (18.75MB/s) PHY rates require AP advertising 40MHz channels. 20MHz channels are limited to 72.2Mbps (9.025MB/s). Actual transmit efficiency is a function of dongle temperature and signal to noise ratio. Peak performance around 75% of PHY rate in low noise environment at 10M. Linux support requires CONFIG_MT7601U. WiFi 4 operates on the 2.4GHz band (2.400GHz-2.4835GHz) using the IEEE 802.11b/g/n standards.
Choose USB or PCIe based on the computer
USB adapters
A USB adapter is the practical path when you need an external device and do not have, or do not want to use, an internal expansion slot. Confirm that the exact USB model and revision use the chipset covered by the compatibility information. A retail model name alone may not identify the hardware revision inside the box.
PCIe cards
An internal PCIe card is an option for a desktop with a compatible free slot. Linux Wireless lists driver families that support PCIe, but that does not establish compatibility for a specific retail card, motherboard, firmware, or Mint kernel. Check those parts as a combination before purchase.

Use this checklist before you buy
- Identify your Mint release and running kernel. Use
cat /etc/linuxmint/infoanduname -r, then check Mint’s release information. - Find the exact chipset and revision. Ask the seller or manufacturer for the hardware revision and chipset; do not assume every revision under one model name is identical.
- Match the chipset to a Linux driver and kernel. Check the Linux Wireless driver list and, for the MT7921AU USB candidate, the compatibility guide.
- Confirm the device ID where relevant. The MT7921AU guide warns that the device ID affects plug-and-play support, so verify the exact unit rather than relying on the family name.
- Match the form factor to your computer. Check that the computer can use the adapter’s USB connection or has the right available PCIe slot.
- Check the features you actually need. Compare Wi-Fi generation, bands, operating modes, and Bluetooth support against the device’s documented specifications. Do not infer speed, range, or stability from the chipset alone.
How strong is the compatibility evidence?
Linux Wireless catalogs driver families and supported buses, while warning that drivers may not support every feature and can have issues. A community-maintained adapter list can help identify chipset and device-ID combinations, but it is not Mint certification. A manufacturer announcement, such as LM Technologies’ LM842 and LM843 Linux support notice, establishes what the vendor claims about support; it does not independently verify behavior on every Mint release.
For that reason, treat model suggestions as leads to verify, not guarantees. The cited material does not establish that one adapter is fastest, has the best reception, or works identically across all hardware revisions.
