The right headphones for weightlifting are the ones that stay put through bracing, reracking and position changes without becoming hot or distracting. For most lifters, that means secure ear-hook earbuds. The Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 is the strongest all-round hook-style choice in the available workout testing; the JBL Endurance Peak 4 is the better fit for people who put a high priority on its stated IP68 protection; and the Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 is the awareness-first alternative. Over-ear headphones can work well for relatively stationary squats and deadlifts, but their cups retain more heat and sweat.
This guide gives five practical choices by use case. Three are named products with published workout descriptions; the remaining two are design-based picks for shoppers who need an over-ear or non-hook solution, not unsupported five-way product rankings.
Quick comparison: five sensible choices for lifting
Use the table to narrow the field before considering sound quality. A running test does not prove that a headphone will fit every lifter, so stability, moisture handling and awareness should match your actual sessions.
| Choice | Best for | Fit and movement | Water rating or protection | Heat and comfort | Awareness and controls | Battery information |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 | Most lifters who want ear hooks | Nickel-titanium hooks stayed in place through WIRED’s hours-long testing | IPX4 splash resistance; not waterproof or submersible | Earbud format avoids a hot over-ear cup; comfort remains individual | ANC, Transparency mode and push-button controls; iOS and Android compatible | Up to 10 hours, or 8 hours with ANC; case adds 35 hours, according to WIRED |
| JBL Endurance Peak 4 | Lifters prioritizing a high stated protection rating | Ear hooks provide a physical anchor | IP68 rating as identified by RTINGS; follow the manufacturer’s limits | RTINGS describes the fit as comfortable | ANC is less effective than the leading model on RTINGS’ comparison | Not stated in the cited testing |
| Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 | Training where hearing surroundings matters | Secure band keeps the transducers positioned without sealing the ear canal | Specific IP rating is not stated in the cited TechRadar description | Open-ear design reduces the enclosed-ear feeling | Bone-conduction and air-conduction approach preserves awareness; loud gyms can overpower it | 12-hour specification, according to TechRadar |
| Over-ear headphones for static barbell work | People who prefer a headband during controlled squats or deadlifts | Headband can feel stable when there is little head movement | Choose a clearly stated IP rating; “sweat-resistant” alone is not standardized | Best in a cool, ventilated gym; cups trap warmth and sweat | ANC can reduce background noise, but may reduce awareness of people nearby | Compare the maker’s stated runtime with your longest session; no single figure applies |
| Stability-wing or hook earbuds | Lifters who need retention but do not want a full band | Wings or hooks brace against the ear; test them with your own ear shape | Look for a published IP rating and understand whether it covers splashes only | Usually cooler than over-ears, though tips can create pressure | Pick ANC, transparency or neither according to the gym’s noise and safety needs | Choose enough stated runtime for the session plus charging margin |
The first three rows are specific models described by WIRED, RTINGS and TechRadar. The final two rows are form-factor recommendations because comparable, independently reported lifting tests are not established for a particular model.

What makes headphones suitable for weightlifting?
Retention during bracing and position changes
Lifting does not involve the same continuous head motion as running, but it includes looking up, resetting a bar, lying on a bench and moving between stations. An ear hook or stability wing creates a mechanical anchor that is less dependent on friction from a silicone tip. A headband can also feel secure during a controlled lift, but it is more vulnerable to shifting when you lie back, turn quickly or wear a hat.
Fit is personal. Ear anatomy, glasses, hair and the shape of a lifting belt or rack can all change pressure points. Start with a short warm-up, then perform the movements that normally dislodge earbuds before committing to a long session.
Sweat protection is not waterproofing
IP ratings are more useful than an unstandardized “sweat-resistant” label. IPX4 indicates protection from splashing water; it does not authorize submersion, rinsing under a tap or deliberate exposure to a heavy stream. The JBL model’s IP68 rating is a substantially higher stated protection level, but the rating still does not remove the need to follow the product’s care instructions.

In particular, an open-ear product may be a good awareness choice without having a stated rating in the buying information you are reading.
Heat, pressure and session length
Over-ear cups can feel comfortable at first because they spread pressure around the ear, yet the enclosed space also holds warmth and perspiration. RTINGS notes that sweat can wear padding, especially faux-leather or plastic surfaces, and recommends wiping over-ear headphones after training. Replaceable pads can make cleaning and odor control easier, but compatibility must be checked for the exact model.
Earbuds avoid a large warm cup, but their tips or hooks can create pressure over several hours. Comfort is therefore a wear-test question, not a specification you can guarantee from a product page.
Noise control versus situational awareness
Active noise cancellation can lower the rumble of fans, music and nearby machines, making a playlist easier to hear at a safer volume. It can also make it harder to notice a spotter, an approaching person or a machine alert. Open-ear designs leave the ear canal unobstructed and preserve more environmental sound, but they may struggle in a very loud gym.
Choose the mode that matches the room: transparency or open-ear awareness when you need to hear people, and ANC only when reducing background noise will not compromise safety. Neither mode replaces attention to the platform around you.
1. Beats Powerbeats Pro 2: the strongest hook-style all-rounder
WIRED reports that the redesigned nickel-titanium hooks stayed in place through hours of testing. That physical retention is the main reason to consider this model for lifting: the hook shares the load with the ear tip when you brace, look up or move from a rack to a bench.
It combines ANC with a Transparency mode, so you can change how much outside sound reaches you instead of using one setting for every exercise. Push-button controls are useful when your hands are chalky or gloved, and WIRED lists compatibility with both iOS and Android.

The stated IPX4 rating means splash protection, not waterproofing. Wipe the earbuds after training and keep them away from deliberate submersion. Battery figures are condition-specific: WIRED lists up to 10 hours, falling to 8 hours with ANC enabled, plus 35 additional hours from the charging case. “Up to” is a laboratory or manufacturer-style maximum, so volume, radio conditions and feature use can reduce real runtime.

Choose it when: staying attached during varied lifting movements matters more than having the highest water rating, and you want both ANC and an awareness mode.
Watch for: the IPX4 limit and the possibility that a hook or tip presses differently on your ears than it did during WIRED’s testing.
2. JBL Endurance Peak 4: protection and physical retention first
RTINGS identifies the Endurance Peak 4 as a mid-range workout option with ear hooks, a comfortable fit and an IP68 rating. Those hooks give you the same basic retention advantage as other sport earbuds, while the higher stated protection rating makes this the comparison point for lifters who sweat heavily or train outdoors.
IP68 should not be treated as a promise that every workout situation is harmless. Check the product’s own instructions for water depth, duration, charging-port care and drying requirements. Never place wet earbuds in a charging case; moisture trapped around charging contacts can cause problems even when the product has a high rating.

RTINGS also notes that its ANC is less effective than the top pick discussed on that page. If your gym is extremely loud, the difference may matter more than the protection rating. If your priority is a secure hook and a robust published rating, the trade-off may be worthwhile.
A battery figure is not established in the cited comparison, so do not assume a runtime from another JBL model. Verify the current specification and whether it refers to earbuds alone or includes the case before buying.
Choose it when: a high stated water-and-dust rating and ear-hook retention are your first filters.
Watch for: less effective ANC than the leading comparison model and the absence of a verified runtime in the information above.
3. Shokz OpenRun Pro 2: the awareness-first option
TechRadar describes the OpenRun Pro 2 as using a bone-conduction and air-conduction approach with an open-ear design, a secure band and a 12-hour battery specification. Because it does not seal the ear canal like a conventional earbud, it is the natural choice for lifters who want to hear conversation, instructions and nearby equipment.

That openness is also its limitation. A busy gym with loud music, dropping weights and multiple machines can overwhelm open-ear audio, forcing you to raise the volume or accept less detail. Test it at a sensible level in the actual room where you train rather than judging it in a quiet home.
The cited TechRadar description does not provide an IP rating here, so treat water protection as unconfirmed until you check the current product documentation. The secure band can be stable for upright work, but check whether it contacts your glasses, hair or the back of a bench when you lie down.
Choose it when: awareness of your surroundings is more important than maximum isolation.

4. Over-ear headphones for controlled, relatively static lifts
An over-ear design is a legitimate choice for lifters who dislike in-ear pressure or who mainly perform controlled squats, deadlifts and machine work. A headband distributes stability over the top of the head, and large drivers can provide an immersive soundstage without inserting anything into the ear canal.
This is a design recommendation, not a claim that one unnamed model is the fifth-best product. Look for a headband that does not slide when you hinge, lie back or look upward, and for ear cushions that do not press against your glasses. A moderate clamp can feel secure; excessive clamp becomes tiring during a long session.
Heat is the major trade-off. RTINGS advises wiping over-ear headphones after workouts because sweat can degrade padding, particularly faux leather or plastic. Choose breathable or replaceable pads where the exact model supports them, and let the headset dry before storing it. Do not buy replacement pads until compatibility with your precise model is confirmed.

5. Stability-wing or hook earbuds when you need a different fit
Some lifters need the retention of a physical support but do not want the band of an open-ear headset or the larger hook used by a particular sport model. Earbuds with a stability wing or compact hook are the design category to investigate. They can be cooler than over-ears and less visually bulky while still bracing against the outer ear.
Because ear shapes vary widely, use the supplied size options and test the fit with your actual movements: unracking, looking toward a mirror, lying on a bench and walking between sets. A wing that feels secure while standing may become painful after an hour of pressure.
Apply the same specification discipline as with the named models. Require a published IP rating, identify whether it is splash protection or more substantial ingress protection, and confirm the runtime with ANC or transparency enabled if those modes are important. If a listing only says “sweatproof,” treat the protection level as not established.
Choose it when: you want a cooler, compact alternative to over-ears and need more retention than a loose conventional earbud.
Watch for: pressure points and marketing language that does not state an actual IP rating.

How to choose by the way you train
For heavy barbell sessions with frequent setup changes
Start with an ear hook or stability feature. You will repeatedly brace, reset your stance and move around a rack, so physical retention is more valuable than a marginal sound-quality difference. The Powerbeats Pro 2 and Endurance Peak 4 are the evidence-backed examples in this guide; select between them by deciding whether ANC flexibility or the higher stated protection rating matters more.
For bench work and machines
Over-ears become more practical when your head remains supported or upright and you are not repeatedly turning under load. Check cup heat and clamp pressure during a full session. If you train in a hot room, an earbud or open-ear design may still be more comfortable.
For crowded commercial gyms
Decide first how much you must hear. OpenRun Pro 2 is designed around awareness, while ANC earbuds reduce background noise but require deliberate use of transparency or an ambient mode when people need to get your attention.
For outdoor lifting or very sweaty training
Use the published IP rating as a filter, not as permission to ignore care. The Endurance Peak 4’s IP68 rating is the strongest stated protection among the named models here; the Powerbeats Pro 2’s IPX4 rating is limited to splashes. Dry every device before charging.
Battery, controls and charging: details that affect a workout
Compare battery figures under the feature setting you will actually use. ANC can reduce the Powerbeats Pro 2’s stated maximum from 10 hours to 8 hours, and other products may show different results with ANC, transparency, high volume or calls enabled. A case’s additional capacity is not the same as continuous earbud runtime; it helps only when you have time to recharge between sets or sessions.
- Choose a stated earbud runtime longer than your normal workout, not merely equal to it.
- Check whether the published number includes the charging case.
- Prefer physical controls if you need to adjust playback while wearing gloves or handling chalk.
- Confirm that the charging case and earbuds are dry before connecting power.
Sweat-care routine that protects any design
- Wipe immediately. Use a soft, dry cloth on earbuds, hooks, bands and over-ear cups after training. RTINGS specifically recommends wiping over-ear headphones.
- Remove visible moisture. Pay attention to charging contacts, microphone openings and the underside of ear cushions.
- Air-dry before storage. Leave the headphones out of a closed gym bag until surface moisture is gone.
- Clean removable parts carefully. If the model has removable tips or pads, follow its instructions; do not assume a generic solvent is safe for coatings or faux leather.
- Replace only compatible pads or tips. RTINGS notes that replaceable ear pads can help with trapped sweat and odor, but fit and compatibility are model-specific.
Buying checklist
- Movement: Does the design stay put when you brace, hinge, lie back and turn?
- Protection: Is there a real IP rating, and do you understand its splash or immersion limits?
- Comfort: Will hooks, wings, tips or cups remain tolerable for your longest session?
- Heat: Can the gym’s temperature and humidity make an over-ear cup uncomfortable?
- Awareness: Do you need open-ear sound, transparency mode or isolation?
- Battery: Is the runtime stated for the mode and volume you will use?
- Controls: Can you pause, adjust volume or switch modes without reaching for a phone?
- Care: Can you wipe and dry the product easily, and are replacement parts available for the exact model?
For additional workout-testing context, see Tom’s Guide’s workout-headphone guide and RTINGS’ over-ear workout recommendations. Their testing discusses comfort, workout duration and the trade-offs between form factors; use those criteria rather than assuming a running result guarantees a lifting fit.
