For most solo webcasters, the right choice comes down to two documented designs: Shure’s MV7+ for close speech with USB-C and an XLR upgrade path, or Audio-Technica’s AT2020USB+ for a straightforward USB condenser desk setup. Neither can be declared universally “best” from the available evidence: the manufacturer documents establish features and specifications, not a controlled head-to-head test of intelligibility, room-noise rejection, or recording quality.

Use the MV7+ when you can keep the microphone close and want flexible USB/XLR connectivity plus onboard digital processing. Choose the AT2020USB+ when you work at a desk in a reasonably controlled room and want USB power, a built-in headphone output with mix control, and an included tripod stand. In either case, placement, gain, monitoring, and current device compatibility will affect the webcast more than a specification sheet alone.

Quick recommendations by webcast situation

Situation Most suitable documented option Why it fits Important qualification
Solo presenter speaking close to the microphone Shure MV7+ Dynamic cardioid design, USB-C and XLR connectors, headphone monitoring, and onboard processing controls. Shure’s close-mic and voice-isolation descriptions are manufacturer claims; no independent room test establishes a universal advantage.
Desk-based speaker in a controlled room Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ USB condenser design, cardioid pickup, headphone level and mix controls, and included tripod desk stand. Condenser microphones can reveal more room sound when placement and acoustics are poor; the pattern alone does not remove noise.
You may add a mixer or audio interface later Shure MV7+ USB-C works now while the XLR output leaves an analog upgrade path. An XLR setup also requires compatible interface or mixer hardware and suitable gain.
You need a simple computer connection Either, after checking cables and software Both provide USB operation documented by their manufacturers. Verify the exact operating system, port, adapter, mobile-device, and conferencing support before purchase.

What matters most in a webcast microphone

Connection and workflow

A USB microphone converts audio inside the microphone and sends a digital signal to the computer. That avoids buying an interface and is usually the shortest route to a live stream, webinar, or video call. The MV7+ uses USB-C and also exposes XLR. The AT2020USB+ is documented as a USB microphone powered through its USB connection. Connector shape alone does not guarantee compatibility: a computer, tablet, or phone may need a particular cable, adapter, power arrangement, or supported application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pickup pattern and microphone type

Both models use a cardioid, unidirectional approach. Cardioid means the capsule is most sensitive toward the front and less sensitive toward the rear; it does not mean the microphone automatically cancels every fan, keyboard, neighbor, or reflection. The MV7+ is a dynamic microphone intended for close vocal work. The AT2020USB+ is a permanently polarized condenser. Type influences sensitivity, handling technique, and room audibility, but it is not a reliable stand-in for a real-room noise test.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Monitoring and control

A headphone output lets you hear the signal before it reaches the audience. This catches clipping, hum, cable faults, and an accidentally muted application. The MV7+ user guide lists a 3.5 mm headphone monitor output and digital processing such as Auto Level, denoiser, popper reduction, EQ or tone controls, reverb, compressor, limiter, and high-pass filter. The AT2020USB+ manual documents headphone level and mix controls. Hardware controls are useful only when you understand whether they change your monitor feed, the computer feed, or both.

Evidence versus expectation

The specifications below come from the manufacturers’ user documentation. They are not independent measurements, market statistics, or proof that one microphone sounds better for every voice and room. No controlled head-to-head listening result is established here, so recommendations are framed by workflow and environment rather than a universal ranking.

Shure MV7+: the flexible close-speech option

Documented specifications and features

  • Microphone type: dynamic.
  • Pickup description: unidirectional cardioid.
  • Connections: USB-C and XLR.
  • Headphone monitoring: 3.5 mm output.
  • Digital conversion listed in the user guide: 16- or 24-bit at 48 kHz.
  • Frequency response listed in the guide: 50 Hz–16 kHz.
  • Onboard processing listed by Shure: Auto Level, denoiser, popper reduction, EQ or tone, reverb, compressor, limiter, and high-pass filter.

Shure describes the MV7+ as a “professional-quality USB dynamic microphone, ideal for close mic applications that require vocal intelligibility with a balanced tone.” That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not an independent speech-intelligibility result. The guide also describes a voice-isolation approach, but it does not quantify how many decibels of room noise are removed in a typical home office.

Who should choose it

The MV7+ suits a presenter who can keep the capsule near the mouth, wants to start over USB-C, and may later connect to an XLR mixer or interface. The hybrid connection is its defining practical advantage: you can avoid an interface initially without discarding the option of an analog signal path later. Close placement also reduces the amount of room sound relative to the voice, provided the presenter maintains a consistent speaking position.

How to use its processing responsibly

Start with processing off or at conservative settings. Set the microphone distance and input level first, then add only the functions that solve an audible problem. A high-pass filter can reduce low-frequency rumble; a compressor can make level changes less abrupt; a limiter can help prevent peaks from overloading the digital path. Denoising and popper reduction can alter transients or consonants when pushed too far. Listen through headphones while speaking at the loudest expected volume and leave enough headroom that an excited sentence does not clip.

Audio-Technica AT2020USB+: the direct USB condenser desk setup

Documented specifications and features

  • Microphone type: permanently polarized condenser.
  • Pickup pattern: cardioid.
  • Frequency response listed in the official manual: 20–20,000 Hz.
  • Power and connection: USB powered and connected.
  • Digital conversion listed in the manual: 16-bit at 44.1 or 48 kHz.
  • Monitoring: headphone output with headphone-level and mix controls.
  • Included support: tripod desk stand.

The AT2020USB+ is a sensible fit for a speaker who wants a self-contained desk microphone and has a reasonably quiet, treated, or naturally damped room. The tripod stand can get you working without a separate mounting purchase. The headphone level control adjusts listening volume, while the mix control is intended to balance the microphone signal against computer playback in the monitor feed.

Room and placement implications

A condenser capsule can capture a detailed voice, but it can also make reflections, computer fans, and nearby household activity more apparent when the microphone is too far away. Place the front of the cardioid pattern toward your mouth and keep the least-sensitive rear side aimed toward the dominant noise source when practical. A desk stand should be stable enough that typing or cable movement does not shake the microphone. The manual’s 20–20,000 Hz specification describes the stated response range; it does not predict how clear your voice will sound in a reflective room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility caution

The official manual lists older operating-system requirements. Those statements should not be treated as a current guarantee for a modern computer, tablet, or phone. Before ordering, check the manufacturer’s current support information for your operating-system version, available USB port, adapter requirements, conferencing application, and recording software. A microphone can be electrically functional yet unavailable to an application because the operating system selected a different input device or denied microphone permission.

USB or XLR for webcasting?

Choose USB when simplicity is the priority

USB is usually the fastest path for one presenter: connect the microphone, select it as the input in the operating system and webcast application, and monitor with headphones. It keeps the signal path and gain controls close to the microphone. The trade-off is that your available routing, backup options, and multi-microphone expansion depend on the computer and application.

Choose an XLR path when you need expansion

XLR carries an analog microphone signal to an audio interface or mixer. That arrangement can provide physical faders, multiple inputs, monitor mixes, and a more elaborate production workflow. It also adds hardware, cables, gain staging, and another possible failure point. The MV7+ is the documented option here with both USB-C and XLR, so it can begin as a USB microphone and later feed an interface. The AT2020USB+ evidence supplied for this article documents USB operation but does not establish an XLR output.

Hybrid working method

If you use the MV7+ over USB today, keep the XLR output as an expansion option rather than connecting both paths casually. Select one intentional input in your software, confirm which signal you are monitoring, and avoid creating a duplicate or delayed echo by routing the same microphone through two devices at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Room setup that improves either microphone

  1. Place the microphone close enough that your voice is substantially louder than distant room noise, while leaving room to speak naturally and avoid breath blasts.
  2. Point the front of the cardioid pattern toward your mouth. Keep the rear side pointed toward the strongest steady noise source when the desk layout allows it.
  3. Reduce reflections with practical changes: move away from bare parallel walls, close a noisy door, silence phone alerts, and avoid placing the microphone beside a vibrating laptop fan or hard desktop edge.
  4. Use a stable stand and route the USB or XLR cable so it cannot tap the desk or pull the microphone during the webcast.
  5. Speak at the same distance you will use live. Moving several inches changes level and room contribution, especially with close-mic speech.

Cardioid directionality helps only with sound arriving from less-sensitive angles. It cannot remove reflections already surrounding the capsule, and it cannot replace quieting a loud source. Dynamic construction does not guarantee silence, while a condenser does not guarantee noise. Treat the room and placement as part of the microphone system.

Step-by-step USB setup

  1. Check the device requirements. Identify whether your computer has the required USB port and whether your tablet or phone needs a supported adapter or powered hub.
  2. Connect the microphone directly before launching the webcast application. Avoid unverified hubs while troubleshooting.
  3. Open the operating system’s sound settings and select the microphone as the input. Select the same device in the webcast software’s audio settings; applications often retain an older default.
  4. Connect headphones to the microphone’s monitor output when available. Disable loudspeaker playback or use a headset to prevent feedback.
  5. Speak at normal and peak volume while watching the input meter. Lower the input if the meter reaches clipping; raise it only enough for clear speech with headroom.
  6. Record or preview a short private segment. Listen for hum, crackle, plosives, excessive room sound, and delayed monitoring before going live.
  7. Lock the physical position and cable. Mark the speaking distance if more than one presenter will use the setup.

MV7+ setup with USB-C or XLR

USB-C workflow

Use USB-C when you want the microphone’s digital path and onboard controls without an interface. Set the application to the MV7+ input, choose a consistent 48 kHz project or webcast setting where the software permits, and monitor through the 3.5 mm output. Apply Auto Level or compression only after checking an unprocessed voice sample so you know what each change does.

XLR workflow

For XLR, connect the microphone to a compatible interface or mixer, select that interface as the application input, and set gain while speaking at the loudest expected level. Monitor from the interface or mixer to avoid a second, delayed software-monitor path. The interface must provide the connectors and gain your setup requires; those requirements are separate from the microphone’s own XLR socket.

AT2020USB+ setup with headphone and mix controls

  1. Attach the microphone to its tripod stand on a stable surface and orient the cardioid front toward you.
  2. Connect USB and select the AT2020USB+ in both the operating system and webcast application.
  3. Plug headphones into the microphone’s headphone output.
  4. Set the headphone-level control low before speaking, then raise it to a comfortable monitoring volume.
  5. Use the mix control to balance your direct microphone signal against computer playback in the monitor feed. If the audience hears an imbalance, adjust the application’s input and playback routing separately.
  6. Run a private test from the exact desk position. Move closer or reduce reflective surfaces if the voice sounds distant or the room dominates.

Compatibility checklist before purchase

  • Operating-system version and current manufacturer support, not only an old manual’s list.
  • Available USB-A or USB-C port, cable type, and any required adapter.
  • Whether your phone or tablet supplies enough power and permits the microphone as an input.
  • Webcast, meeting, and recording application support for selecting an external microphone.
  • Permission settings that allow microphone access.
  • Whether you need simultaneous headphones, speakers, a second microphone, or a mixer.
  • For the MV7+, whether you are buying for immediate USB use, future XLR use, or both.

Common problems and fixes

No microphone appears

Reconnect the cable, try a different supported port, and confirm the operating system detects the device before opening the webcast application. Then choose it explicitly in the application. On mobile devices, verify adapter and power compatibility rather than assuming a passive cable is sufficient.

The audience hears echo

Use headphones, disable speaker playback, and ensure only one monitoring path is active. Echo can come from the application’s software monitoring combined with direct headphone monitoring.

Speech is distorted

Lower the input or interface gain and test the loudest phrase you expect to deliver. A limiter may help prevent peaks in the MV7+ digital path, but it cannot restore audio that was already clipped at the input.

Room noise is prominent

Move closer, aim the cardioid front correctly, turn the noise source away from the capsule, and reduce reflections. Do not expect the cardioid label or dynamic construction alone to remove continuous noise.

Voice sounds thin or boomy

Keep distance consistent and move in small increments. If using the MV7+, test its high-pass, EQ or tone, and other processing one at a time. Processing changes should be judged through headphones and a recorded sample, not only by how the presenter hears their own voice while speaking.

How to make the final choice

Pick the MV7+ if your priority is an upgrade path

Select the MV7+ when USB-C convenience matters now but an XLR interface or mixer may matter later, or when you want the documented onboard processing and close-mic workflow. Plan for deliberate placement and headphone checks; the feature list is not a substitute for level setting or room control.

Pick the AT2020USB+ if your priority is a contained desk setup

Select the AT2020USB+ when you want USB power, a tripod stand, and direct headphone level and mix controls for a desk-based presentation in a controlled room. Verify current operating-system and device support because the manual’s compatibility information is dated.

Choose neither until the environment is ready

Delay the purchase decision if you cannot place a microphone near the speaker, cannot monitor privately, or have not confirmed the computer and application can use an external input. Fixing those constraints often produces a larger improvement than changing between two microphones with similar directional goals.

Care and repeatable webcast practice

  • Keep the capsule and connectors dry and free of dust; do not spray cleaner into openings.
  • Store the microphone so the cable is not sharply bent at the connector.
  • Before each important webcast, check the selected input, headphone level, mute state, and a short recording.
  • Use the same speaking distance and chair position for consistent tone from one session to the next.
  • Save a known-good application audio configuration so an update does not silently switch to a laptop microphone.

The practical winner is the model that matches your room, connection, monitoring habits, and upgrade plans. The MV7+ is the documented hybrid USB-C/XLR choice for close speech; the AT2020USB+ is the documented USB condenser desk choice with built-in headphone and mix controls. Treat those as workflow recommendations, not proof of a universal sound-quality ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a dynamic microphone automatically block background noise?

No. The MV7+ is a dynamic cardioid microphone intended for close speech, but cardioid directionality and dynamic construction do not guarantee removal of fans, reflections, keyboards, or other room sounds. Close placement and physical noise control remain necessary.

Can I use the MV7+ without buying an audio interface?

Yes. Its USB-C connection provides a direct computer workflow. The XLR connector is available if you later add a compatible interface or mixer.

Does the AT2020USB+ include a desk stand?

The official manual documents an included tripod desk stand. Confirm the contents of the package and region you are buying before ordering.

Which sample rate should I use for a webcast?

The MV7+ guide lists 48 kHz, while the AT2020USB+ manual lists 44.1 or 48 kHz. Use one sample rate consistently across the microphone, operating system, and webcast application, following the application’s current guidance.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why should I recheck AT2020USB+ compatibility?

Its manual lists older operating-system requirements. Current computers and mobile devices may differ, so verify present manufacturer support, port and adapter needs, and application compatibility before purchase.
