Best overall: use a fully enchanted netherite sword for dependable melee, a bow for the most flexible ranged attacks, and a mace when you can reliably land falling smash attacks. Axes, crossbows, and tridents are excellent specialists, but each gives up something that makes the sword or bow a safer default.
For multiplayer practice, Godlike.Host Minecraft Java servers include a Pterodactyl-based game panel, free DDoS protection, and up to three free backups a day.
The right answer changes with your edition, version, terrain, and fighting style. Java and Bedrock do not share identical combat behavior, so this ranking treats them separately where that matters rather than pretending there is one universal damage chart.
Ranking at a glance
| Rank | Weapon | Best role | Main advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Netherite sword | All-purpose melee | Reliable damage, fast follow-up attacks, and the broadest everyday utility | Requires close range and does not provide ranged pressure |
| 2 | Bow | General ranged combat | Repeatable long-range shots with flexible positioning | Needs arrows and time to draw for maximum damage |
| 3 | Mace | Planned burst damage | Falling smash attacks can produce the highest burst ceiling | Much less reliable on flat ground or after a missed drop |
| 4 | Axe | Heavy melee hits and Java shield pressure | Strong individual hits and useful shield interaction in Java | Slower attack cadence makes mistakes more costly |
| 5 | Crossbow | Prepared burst and special ammunition | Can be loaded before contact and use fireworks or multishot | Reloading is slower and less fluid than ordinary bow shooting |
| 6 | Trident | Hybrid and water combat | Works in melee, as a thrown weapon, and with movement or lightning effects | Harder to obtain consistently and more dependent on conditions |
This is a role-based ranking, not a claim that every weapon has one fixed damage value. No authoritative source establishes a single “best weapon” statistic that applies to both Java and Bedrock across versions. Attack timing, shield behavior, enchantments, and the mace’s smash calculation must be labeled by edition and version when you test or compare them.

How to choose a Minecraft weapon
Reliable damage is only one part of a useful weapon. Consider these seven questions before replacing your current loadout:
- Can you keep attacking? Attack speed or firing cadence determines how forgiving a miss is.
- Do you need range? Ranged damage lets you control creepers, flying mobs, ledges, and open terrain before they reach you.
- What resources do you have? Ammunition, durability, rare drops, and enchantment books can matter more than theoretical peak damage.
- Which enchantments fit the job? A weapon with the right build often outperforms a nominally stronger unenchanted option.
- How much movement is required? A mace rewards vertical positioning, while a trident can turn water or rain into mobility.
- What is your edition? Java attack cooldowns, Sweeping Edge, and axe shield behavior should not be assumed to work identically in Bedrock.
- How much practice will the weapon demand? A simple weapon that lands consistently is better than a high-ceiling weapon you regularly miss with.
1. Netherite sword: the best overall melee weapon
The netherite sword is the safest default for exploration, caves, farms, and ordinary mob fights. It combines dependable close-range damage with a quick enough attack rhythm to recover from imperfect timing. You can carry it into almost any environment without arranging a special setup, and its enchantment selection covers damage, crowd control, drops, fire, and durability.
Why it wins the general-purpose slot
- Consistent contact: every hit uses the same basic range and does not depend on a fall, a weather condition, or a loaded projectile.
- Broad enchantment support: Sharpness, Smite, Fire Aspect, Knockback, Looting, and Unbreaking are all relevant sword choices. In Java, Sweeping Edge adds an important area-damage consideration against groups.
- Low cognitive load: you can switch from a cave fight to a farm or Nether corridor without changing your attack plan.
- Strong longevity build: Mending and Unbreaking reduce the need to replace a well-made sword when you use it continuously.
Choosing the sword’s damage enchantment
Use Sharpness for a mixed world where you fight many enemy types. Choose Smite when undead targets are the central problem. These are alternative damage plans rather than upgrades that stack together on one sword. Add Looting when drops matter, Fire Aspect when burning damage is useful and safe, and Knockback only when pushing enemies away helps your terrain or tactics. Knockback can also make follow-up hits less convenient, so it is not automatically desirable for every player.

In Java, Sweeping Edge makes a sword particularly valuable when several hostile mobs are close together. The benefit depends on positioning and attack timing, so keep enough space to swing without allowing a group to surround you. Do not carry Java assumptions into Bedrock: label your edition before relying on sweeping behavior or attack-cooldown techniques.
2. Bow: the best general ranged weapon
A bow is the most flexible ranged choice for most players. A fully drawn shot provides repeatable damage from a distance, letting you start encounters before mobs can touch you and reposition while they approach. It works in caves with sight lines, on open terrain, around farms, and during defensive fights where closing distance is dangerous.
What makes the bow easier to live with
- Immediate versatility: it does not require a special biome, weather state, or vertical drop.
- Positioning advantage: you can fire from walls, ledges, water edges, or behind a shield-bearing teammate while avoiding many melee attacks.
- Simple progression: improving draw consistency and aim produces benefits even before the best enchantments are available.
Recommended bow build
Power raises arrow damage, Flame adds fire, Punch increases knockback, and Infinity can reduce normal-arrow consumption under its stated rules. Unbreaking and Mending address durability for long expeditions. Treat Infinity as an ammunition-convenience choice, not a universal damage increase; choose the durability arrangement that fits how you obtain and carry arrows.

Flame is useful against targets that can safely burn, but fire can be inconvenient when you need drops immediately or are fighting near flammable builds. Punch is valuable for keeping enemies away, although excessive knockback can make a second shot harder. Power is the core damage choice when you want one bow that handles nearly every ordinary encounter.

3. Mace: the highest conditional burst ceiling
The 1.21 mace is the strongest specialist when you can consistently convert height into a smash attack. Its defining attack gains damage from the blocks you fall before impact. That makes it exceptional for planned drops, towers, ambushes, and other fights where you control vertical space.
When the mace is outstanding
- Prepared drops: build or use a safe elevated position, fall toward the target, and time the attack for the impact.
- Ambushes: a player who starts above an enemy can turn movement into a single burst strike.
- Vertical arenas: towers, shafts, and terrain with repeatable height let you set up the same attack more than once.
Why it is not the universal winner
The smash bonus depends on falling distance, so a flat-ground fight removes the mace’s defining advantage. A missed attack can also leave you exposed to fall damage or a counterattack. If the target moves unpredictably, the landing area is cramped, or you cannot recover safely after the swing, a sword is usually more dependable. The mace’s ceiling is higher; its floor is less forgiving.
Mace enchantments
Microsoft’s 1.21 documentation identifies Density and Wind Burst as mace enchantments. Build around the kind of movement you can execute repeatedly rather than assuming the most spectacular smash is always practical. Test the exact behavior in your edition and version before using a mace as your only weapon in a dangerous expedition.
4. Axe: the best heavy hit and Java shield specialist
An axe trades attack speed for a strong individual hit and useful utility. It is attractive when you prefer deliberate swings, want to punish an opening, or fight shield users in Java. The comparison changes by edition: Java axes can disable shields, while you should not assume the same interaction without checking the Bedrock rules for your version.

When to carry an axe
- Shield-oriented Java PvP: the shield-disabling interaction can create an opening for a follow-up attack.
- High-value openings: a carefully timed heavy strike rewards patience against a slow or exposed target.
- Utility overlap: the axe is already useful for gathering wood, so it can fill two inventory roles during routine travel.
Trade-offs versus a sword
The slower cadence gives you less room to correct a missed swing. Against several fast mobs, a sword’s more forgiving rhythm and Java sweeping capability are generally easier to use. Sharpness, Smite, Fire Aspect, and Unbreaking are documented axe-compatible choices, but the same mutually exclusive damage decision applies: select Sharpness for mixed targets or Smite for undead-focused work rather than expecting both on one item.

5. Crossbow: prepared burst and special ammunition
A crossbow is ideal when you can prepare before the fight. Load it in advance, hold the shot while moving, and release it at the moment an enemy enters range. This makes crossbows effective for raids, ambushes, defensive walls, and coordinated volleys where several players can fire together.
Why preparation changes the comparison
Unlike a bow’s draw-and-release rhythm, a crossbow separates loading from firing. You can walk with a loaded weapon and begin an encounter with immediate burst, but reloading between shots is less fluid. Choose it when the first volley matters more than sustained fire or when you can safely take time between attacks.
Crossbow build choices
- Quick Charge: shortens the reload step and makes repeated shots more practical.
- Multishot: spreads one firing action across multiple projectiles, useful against clustered targets.
- Piercing: lets a shot pass through targets under its applicable rules, which can reward lined-up enemies.
- Firework rockets: provide a different burst option from ordinary arrows and suit prepared engagements.
Multishot and Piercing represent different firing plans, so choose according to whether you want spread or penetration. Quick Charge is the most generally useful improvement when you expect more than one exchange.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute6. Trident: the best hybrid and water specialist
A trident is unusual because it covers melee and thrown attacks with one item. It becomes especially valuable in water or rain, where its movement and enchantment options can change how you approach a fight. It is also harder to obtain reliably than the ordinary sword, bow, or axe, so its versatility comes with an acquisition and maintenance burden.
What the trident can do
- Loyalty: returns a thrown trident to you, making repeated throws practical when the enchantment applies.
- Riptide: launches the player in water or rain, turning weather and terrain into movement.
- Channeling: can summon lightning when its conditions are met, creating a specialized storm tactic.
- Impaling: supports damage against applicable aquatic targets under the edition’s rules.
Do not treat every enchantment as a universal upgrade. Riptide changes the weapon into a mobility tool and conflicts with the use case of repeatedly throwing it; Loyalty serves the opposite plan. Channeling needs the appropriate conditions, so it should be a deliberate weather-based strategy rather than your only source of damage.
Enchantment guide by weapon
Enchantments improve an item’s existing abilities or grant additional abilities. The useful combination depends on the job, and several choices are mutually exclusive. Use this matrix as a build checklist, then verify the exact compatibility for your edition and version.

| Weapon | Primary choices | Specialist choices | Durability choices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sword | Sharpness or Smite | Fire Aspect, Knockback, Looting; Sweeping Edge in Java | Unbreaking, Mending |
| Bow | Power | Flame, Punch, Infinity | Unbreaking, Mending |
| Mace | Build around smash attacks | Density, Wind Burst | Use available durability support for long sessions |
| Axe | Sharpness or Smite | Fire Aspect; Java shield pressure is edition-specific | Unbreaking, Mending |
| Crossbow | Quick Charge | Multishot or Piercing; firework rockets | Use durability support when firing frequently |
| Trident | Loyalty or Riptide according to your plan | Channeling, Impaling | Use durability support because replacement is inconvenient |
Sharpness and Smite are examples of build decisions, not tiers that can all be stacked on one item. The same principle applies to crossbow spread versus penetration and trident return versus water-powered movement. Decide what the weapon must do first, then spend enchantment resources on that role.
Java versus Bedrock: differences that change the ranking
Use the edition name in any guide, test, or multiplayer rule set. Official material covers Java and Bedrock 1.21, but practical combat behavior is not interchangeable.
Java considerations
- Attack cooldown timing affects when a sword or axe delivers its best hit.
- Sweeping Edge makes sword positioning and crowd control a major consideration.
- Axes can disable shields, which is particularly important in shield-oriented PvP.
- Mace results depend on the exact 1.21 implementation and the player’s ability to land a falling hit.
Bedrock considerations
Do not import Java attack timing, sweeping assumptions, or shield tactics without checking the Bedrock behavior for your current release. The same named enchantment or weapon can feel different when cadence and interaction rules change. If you publish a server guide or choose equipment for a realm, record the edition and version alongside your recommendation.
Why a universal damage table is misleading
A single table that mixes Java and Bedrock, or old releases with 1.21, can hide the very differences that decide a fight. Compare weapons only after fixing the edition, version, enchantments, target type, attack timing, range, and whether a mace smash is included. When those conditions are unknown, use the role ranking rather than an invented global number.

Practical loadouts
The dependable survival kit
Carry a netherite sword as the default melee tool, a bow for distance, and enough arrows for the trip. This combination covers most caves, overworld travel, farms, and emergency retreats without requiring a special arena. Add a shield and defensive supplies according to your edition and play style, but do not replace the sword merely because a specialist can produce a larger single hit.
The vertical ambush kit
Use a mace only when you can identify a safe, repeatable drop. Keep a sword ready for the moment the terrain becomes flat or the target moves out of the landing zone. Practice the approach in a controlled area first; the cost of a missed smash is not only lost damage but also exposure to fall risk.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The prepared volley kit
Choose a crossbow with Quick Charge when you expect several reloads, then decide between Multishot and Piercing based on whether enemies cluster or line up. Carry a bow if the fight may become a long exchange. The two weapons complement each other: the crossbow supplies a prepared burst, while the bow maintains pressure after the opening.
The water-and-weather kit
Use a trident with Loyalty when you want repeated throws, or Riptide when water and rain are central to your movement. Keep a sword or bow as a fallback because the trident’s strongest advantages depend on the environment and its specialized enchantment plan.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling the mace best in every fight
Symptom: you select a mace on flat terrain and lose exchanges while trying to create height. Correction: reserve it for planned falling attacks and switch to a sword when the fight offers no safe drop.
Recommended Free Tools
Using Java advice in Bedrock
Symptom: an axe, sweeping attack, or cooldown technique does not behave as expected. Correction: identify the edition and current version before copying a tactic, and do not present Java testing as a Bedrock result.
Stacking incompatible enchantment plans
Symptom: you spend resources trying to combine Sharpness with Smite, or build a trident for both Loyalty throws and Riptide movement. Correction: choose the target set and combat role first, then select one compatible path.
Ignoring cadence
Symptom: a heavy axe hit looks powerful but misses often against fast mobs. Correction: use a sword for forgiving follow-up attacks, or slow down and fight from a position where the axe’s deliberate timing is an advantage.
Choosing utility enchantments without a purpose
Symptom: Fire Aspect, Punch, Knockback, or Channeling creates a side effect that makes your normal fights harder. Correction: add a specialist enchantment only when its benefit matches your terrain, target, and drop priorities.

Quick Recap
What to remember
- The fully enchanted netherite sword is the safest all-purpose melee recommendation.
- The bow is the most flexible general ranged weapon.
- The mace has the highest conditional burst ceiling when you can land falling smash attacks, not on every flat-ground fight.
- Axes, crossbows, and tridents win specific jobs through heavy hits, preparation, special ammunition, or environmental utility.
- Enchantments define the build; mutually exclusive choices require a decision rather than a single “best” stack.
- Always label Java or Bedrock and the relevant version before comparing combat behavior.
