Start with Saber and Pistol. The Saber gives you blocking, parries and reliable posture damage; the Pistol lets you target weak points from safer positions, adds posture pressure and can refill nephtoglobin (nephto). Fill the Eternal Guard’s posture meter, wait for the break, then use a heavy attack or finisher. Against more than one Guard, create space and isolate a target before committing.

Rapier and Pistol is the specialist alternative for players who can parry consistently. Fire Transmutation with Saber offers a sustained-burn plan, while Stasis Transmutation with Rapier focuses on control and shatter bursts. Claymore is the high-commitment option: it hits hard and can support lifesteal through Butcher’s Carnage, but it cannot parry. There is no verified universal fire, Stasis or physical-resistance table for Eternal Guards, so treat elemental damage and ranged weapons as encounter-by-encounter options rather than guaranteed counters.

How the Eternal Guard combat loop works

Eternal Guards are most safely handled as a posture fight, not a damage race. The launch combat guidance from One More Level describes the sword as the tool that breaks posture and guns as tools for hitting weak points. Hits and parries fill the enemy’s posture meter; when it breaks, the Guard is vulnerable to a heavy attack or finisher.

Posture is the opening you are building toward

Every exchange should have a purpose: block or parry an attack, add posture damage, and leave enough stamina and space to react to the next swing. A posture break is the point at which you cash in damage. Starting a long attack before that opening is available is risky because attacks cannot be canceled into a parry.

Weak points provide damage and resources

The glowing red-orange areas on enemies are the weak points to target with firearms. A successful weak-point hit deals pressure at range and refills nephtoglobin. This makes the Pistol more than a backup damage source: it helps you maintain your resource while you wait for a safe melee opening. Ammunition is limited, however, so spend shots on visible weak points instead of firing into armor or empty space.

Block, then counter

Blocking is not merely a way to avoid damage. One More Level’s advice is to counter immediately after a block: the counter restores the health lost while blocking. With a weapon that can parry, a clean parry produces a distinct metallic clang and opens a counter opportunity. Learn that sound and use it as confirmation rather than guessing from an animation that may be obscured by a group fight.

Why Saber plus Pistol is the best first build

Saber and Pistol covers all four practical needs in an Eternal Guard encounter: posture access, weak-point pressure, manageable commitment and resource recovery. The Saber handles the close-range work without giving up defense, while the Pistol lets you contribute when a Guard is winding up, repositioning or separated by terrain.

What the Saber contributes

  • Blocking lets you survive an attack that you did not have time to evade.
  • Parries create a counter window and add posture pressure.
  • Repeated sword contact builds toward the posture break required for a heavy attack or finisher.

What the Pistol contributes

  • Weak-point shots pressure a Guard without standing in greatsword range.
  • Weak-point hits refill nephtoglobin.
  • Short ranged attacks let you keep participating while you circle toward a safer angle.

A practical Saber-and-Pistol rotation

  1. Before entering range, identify an exit route and the terrain you will use to separate the Guard if another enemy joins.
  2. Open with a weak-point shot only when the glowing target is visible. Do not empty the magazine while the Guard is protected or moving unpredictably.
  3. Return to the Saber as the Guard closes. Block an unavoidable strike or parry when your timing is reliable.
  4. Use the counter after a successful block or parry, then continue measured sword hits to fill posture.
  5. Stop attacking when you cannot finish the animation safely. Reposition instead of hoping to trade.
  6. When posture breaks, use the heavy attack or finisher immediately, then create distance before the Guard recovers.

This is a flexible first-run setup rather than a maximum-specialization build. It remains useful whether you are learning attack timing, fighting one isolated elite or dealing with a constrained arena where ammunition and stamina must be conserved.

Alternative Eternal Guard builds

The following builds are best understood as different answers to the same four questions: how reliably can you build posture, how safely can you pressure weak points, how much recovery does each attack require, and what extra payoff does a status effect or lifesteal mechanic provide?

Build Posture and critical access Safe ranged pressure Commitment and recovery Status or sustain payoff Best use Main trade-off
Saber + Pistol Block, parry and steady sword pressure Pistol weak-point shots and nephtoglobin refill Moderate; adaptable at close and medium range No specialized status requirement First runs and unknown matchups Less specialized than dedicated status setups
Rapier + Pistol Strong parry and posture-break critical plan Pistol weak-point shots Lower tolerance for mistimed spacing Critical punish after a successful opening Players with dependable parry timing Requires tighter timing and spacing
Fire + Saber Saber supplies the posture loop Uses the same Pistol option if equipped; status damage does not replace weak-point aim Moderate melee commitment Fire Transmutation sustains burn and can set up burn-then-finish play Encounters where burning remains effective Its value depends on the matchup; no universal fire weakness is documented
Stasis + Rapier Rapier parries and posture breaks Ranged pressure is secondary unless a Pistol is carried Requires accurate close-range timing Freeze and shatter burst with control Control-focused fights and openings created by Stasis Less attractive against a Stasis-resistant target; universal resistance values are not published
Claymore Relies on committed melee hits rather than parries No built-in weak-point solution High commitment, close range and slower recovery Butcher’s Carnage can provide lifesteal Aggressive players who can read space and finish swings Cannot parry, so mistakes are harder to recover from

Rapier and Pistol: the parry specialist

Choose Rapier and Pistol when your main source of confidence is timing rather than durability. The Rapier’s plan is to invite an attack, produce the clean parry, build posture and convert the resulting opening into a critical punish. The Pistol still matters because it gives you a way to pressure a weak point while you wait for the next attack pattern.

Legion Wargames: Aces of Valor, Solitaire Board Game for Adults 18+
  • Item is intended for adults, over the age of 18. This is not a child’s toy.
  • Solitaire Play
  • 22 x34 Map
  • 300+ Counters
  • Unit Size: 1 Plane

This setup is less forgiving than Saber and Pistol. A missed parry removes the defensive safety that the Saber’s blocking plan provides, and poor spacing can leave you inside a greatsword swing. Method’s level-21 example recommends replacing Headshot Damage with Parrying Impact when using a Rapier-centered parry build, which aligns the upgrade choices with this weapon’s intended payoff.

Fire Transmutation and Saber: sustained burn

Fire Transmutation is suited to a burn-then-finish rhythm. One More Level’s launch advice specifically recommends burning an enemy and then finishing it, noting that Fire Transmutation sets enemies on fire. Keep the Saber for blocking and posture work; use the fire effect to add sustained pressure rather than abandoning the posture break.

Do not treat Fire as an automatic answer to every Eternal Guard. No published source establishes a universal fire weakness or a fixed burn multiplier for the faction. If the effect appears to contribute little in a particular encounter, return to the Saber’s normal posture-and-finisher plan instead of spending all of your resources trying to force a status result.

Stasis Transmutation and Rapier: control and shatter

Stasis with Rapier is the control build. Its intended sequence is to create a freeze, exploit the resulting opening and deliver shatter burst while the Rapier remains ready for parries and critical punishments. It is attractive when controlling the timing of a fight matters more than sustained raw damage.

The limitation is evidence, not just play style: a universal Stasis-resistance value for Eternal Guards has not been published. Test the effect on the specific Guard and adjust quickly if the freeze is short, expensive or unreliable. Keep enough stamina for defense; a failed control attempt should not leave you unable to block the next attack.

Claymore: aggressive damage with lifesteal

The Claymore is the deliberate opposite of the Rapier. It cannot parry, but it can deliver powerful committed hits and support lifesteal through Butcher’s Carnage. Use it when you understand the Guard’s recovery windows and have room to complete a swing without being interrupted.

Claymore play is especially dangerous in a group. A long animation that is safe against one isolated Guard can be punished by a second enemy. Build your fight around separation, and treat every swing as a commitment that must be completed or avoided before you start it.

Upgrade and stat priorities

For a balanced early setup, invest first in the statistics that increase the number of mistakes you can survive and the number of attacks you can safely attempt. Method’s level-21 example distributes points as follows:

Upgrade Example allocation Why it matters in Eternal Guard fights
Maximum Health 4/4 Gives more room for a blocked hit, a missed timing or a partial trade.
Maximum Endurance 4/4 Supports blocking, repositioning and completing a safe sequence without exhausting yourself.
Blocking 4/4 Improves the defensive plan behind Saber and the health recovery from an immediate counter.
Melee Damage 4/4 Makes each posture-building exchange and post-break punish more valuable.
Airborne Aiming 1/1 Supports weak-point access when elevation or movement changes the shot angle.
Headshot Damage 2/4 Adds ranged damage in a general-purpose setup.
Ferrofluid Flask Refill 1/1 Improves resource availability alongside weak-point nephtoglobin refills.

If Rapier is your primary weapon, Method recommends exchanging the listed Headshot Damage investment for Parrying Impact. That trade makes sense when most of your successful openings come from parries rather than firearm damage.

Beginner Amber choices

GamingProMax lists Iron Grip, Dominatus and Duellist’s Focus as beginner Amber options and recommends Health and Endurance before specialized damage. Use that order when you are still learning Guard timing; a theoretical damage increase is less useful if you run out of endurance before the counter or cannot survive a missed parry.

Step-by-step plan for one isolated Eternal Guard

  1. Survey the arena. Keep an exit route open before you start. Avoid beginning beside a wall, drop or obstacle that prevents a retreat.
  2. Choose the engagement distance. With Saber and Pistol, begin outside greatsword range and wait for a visible weak point. With Rapier or Claymore, enter only when you have identified the attack you intend to answer.
  3. Apply one safe pressure action. Fire at the glowing red-orange weak point, or use a measured melee hit. Do not stack attacks simply because the Guard has not reacted yet.
  4. Defend the next swing. Block when the timing is uncertain. Parry only when you can recognize the attack and spacing. A clean parry is confirmed by the metallic clang.
  5. Counter immediately after a block. The counter returns the health lost while blocking, turning a necessary defense into a controlled offensive moment.
  6. Build posture without overcommitting. Alternate safe hits, parries and weak-point shots. Stop an attack sequence that cannot finish before the Guard recovers.
  7. Confirm the posture break. Once the meter breaks, use a heavy attack or finisher rather than spending the opening on a low-value poke.
  8. Reset after the punish. Move back to a position with an exit route. Reload or recover only when the Guard cannot reach you during the animation.

Fighting groups and The Relentless

The Eternal Guard faction belongs to Napoleon’s plague-ridden forces, and The Relentless is described as an elite greatsword loyalist. The practical implication is that mobility matters more as enemy count and attack reach increase.

Isolate before you commit

Use movement and terrain to separate one Guard from the group. The goal is not to defeat the strongest enemy first at any cost; it is to create a one-on-one window in which a posture break can be completed without a second attack interrupting your finisher.

Never stand still in a greatsword exchange

Circle, dash or retreat after each committed action. A greatsword’s reach makes stationary trading especially costly, and the Claymore’s own long animations can leave you exposed to another Guard. Keep the camera and an escape lane oriented toward the remaining enemies.

Use ranged testing only after separation

The source-tracked Eternal Guard guidance interprets official mobility advice as a reason to test the Musket or another ranged option after a target is isolated. This is a tactical experiment, not proof that every Guard has a ranged-specific weakness. Fire a controlled shot at a visible weak point, observe the result and return to the weapon that gives you the safest posture path.

Do Eternal Guards have a fire or Stasis weakness?

No verified universal weakness table is published for Eternal Guards. Fire Transmutation, Stasis Transmutation and ranged weapons are therefore options to test per encounter, not guaranteed counters. The absence of a documented resistance value also means a guide-reported damage number should not be read as a faction-wide multiplier.

Use observable results to make the decision: whether the status effect applies, how long it lasts, how much resource it consumes and whether it creates a punishable opening. If those results are poor, the Saber’s block-and-posture plan remains the dependable fallback.

Weapon damage figures and how to interpret them

Weapon or effect Reported figure Qualification
Saber Damage scales from 20 to 60 at level 10 GamingProMax launch-guide value; level-10 context; subject to balance changes
Pistol 10 posture damage per shot GamingProMax launch-guide value; use as a posture-pressure reference, not a universal encounter guarantee
Claymore Up to 100 damage per hit GamingProMax launch-guide value; maximum reported hit and high commitment must be considered together

These numbers do not replace the encounter loop. A lower-damage weapon that lets you block, parry or reach weak points safely can produce more real damage than a larger number attached to an attack you cannot complete.

Common mistakes and fixes

Starting an attack you cannot finish

Symptom: the Guard begins a swing while your character is locked into an animation. Fix: shorten the sequence, wait for a confirmed opening and remember that an attack cannot be canceled into a parry.

Using every bullet on armor

Symptom: ammunition disappears without a meaningful posture or health result. Fix: wait for the glowing red-orange weak point and fire deliberately. Weak-point hits are the shots that also refill nephtoglobin.

Blocking without countering

Symptom: repeated blocks slowly drain health. Fix: counter immediately after a block so the health lost while blocking is returned.

Attempting a finisher in a crowd

Symptom: a second Guard interrupts the posture-break punish. Fix: disengage, separate one target with movement or terrain, then break posture when the area is clear.

Assuming an elemental weakness

Symptom: Fire or Stasis consumes resources but produces little control or damage. Fix: test the effect on the current Guard and switch to the reliable physical posture plan when the result is poor.

Choosing Claymore before learning spacing

Symptom: long swings are interrupted or punished by a greatsword. Fix: learn the encounter with Saber and Pistol first, or commit to Claymore only in an isolated arena with a clear recovery route.

Which build should you choose?

  • New to Eternal Guards: Saber + Pistol, with Health, Endurance, Blocking and Melee Damage prioritized.
  • Confident at parries: Rapier + Pistol, with Parrying Impact replacing Headshot Damage in the cited level-21 example.
  • Want sustained status pressure: Fire Transmutation + Saber, provided the burn applies effectively in the encounter.
  • Want control and burst: Stasis Transmutation + Rapier, provided the target is not resisting the effect.
  • Prefer heavy melee and can manage commitment: Claymore with Butcher’s Carnage, used only after isolating the target.

For most players, Saber and Pistol remains the sound default because it does not depend on a particular resistance interaction or perfect parry timing. Build posture with the Saber, use the Pistol for weak points and nephtoglobin, and spend the opening only after the Guard’s posture actually breaks.
