The most dependable boss setup in Valor Mortis is a sword-and-gun build: use the Saber (or Rapier if you are committed to parries), carry a Pistol and Blunderbuss, invest in health, endurance, blocking and firearm damage, and equip Dominatus with Volatile End. The sword is for filling posture, guns are for weak points, and Fire Transmutation supplies damage-over-time when a boss gives you room to apply it.
How boss combat works in Valor Mortis
Every boss strategy follows the same three-part loop, but each encounter changes which part matters most:
- Break posture with your sword. Normal hits and successful parries fill the enemy’s posture meter. When it breaks, use a heavy attack or finisher for your largest melee punish.
- Shoot weak points with guns. Pistol and Blunderbuss rounds are not just ranged damage; weak-point hits build stagger and often refill nephtoglobin (nephto).
- Spend nephto on transmutations. Fire Transmutation sets targets alight, giving you damage over time while you return to parrying, shooting or repositioning.
Enemies frequently drop ammunition when killed, so a firearm-focused build is sustainable if you take weak-point shots instead of firing indiscriminately. The practical result is a hybrid character: melee controls posture and creates finishers, while firearms solve exposed targets and dangerous phases.
The all-purpose boss build
Choose your melee weapon
Saber is the safest default. Method’s guide describes it as the more rounded sword for blocking and parrying, which is valuable while learning ten mandatory main-boss fights. Rapier is a better fit if your game plan is built around precise parries and repeated thrusts; replace the beginner Headshot Damage investment with Parrying Impact when you commit to that style.

Carry both firearms
Keep the Pistol upgraded for accurate weak-point shots, stagger building and targets at range. The Blunderbuss is your high-impact close-range option when a large weak point is exposed or a boss is stunned. This pairing covers single weak points, clustered enemies and short damage windows without requiring a separate build for every arena.
Recommended level-21 foundation
At level 21, Method’s progression reaches the fifth upgrade row. Its beginner foundation is:

For a Rapier parry specialist, move those Headshot Damage points into Parrying Impact. The change favors posture breaks and timing rather than firearm burst.

Ambers and quick slots
For a general boss attempt, equip Dominatus (preferably Dominatus II) and Volatile End. Dominatus increases posture damage from critical hits, helping the sword-and-parry loop reach a finisher sooner. Volatile End makes weak-point shots explode and increases the impact of precise shots, turning exposed targets into firearm damage windows.

Two alternatives cover narrower preferences. Marksman’s Bane lets you parry bullets and gives one pistol round for each bullet parried, making it attractive against projectile-heavy patterns. Iron Grip reduces the chance of being interrupted while healing, which is the comfort choice when a boss repeatedly punishes flask use. The developer also lists Butcher’s Carnage, which heals on melee hits but disables Ferrofluid Flasks; treat it as a deliberate sustain trade, not a universal replacement for the defensive setup.
Put Pistol Cartridges, a Hand/Oil Grenade and a Protective Vial in quick slots. You want ammunition, an immediate damage or fire option, and a defensive emergency button without opening a menu during a combo.
Late-game level-50 setup
At level 50, Method’s route reaches the end of the skill tree and unlocks infinite perks. Its all-around sword-and-gun path keeps the early defensive core, then adds damage, ammunition and resistance:
- Maximum Health, Maximum Endurance, Parrying Impact, Blocking and Melee Damage.
- Airborne Aiming, Headshot Damage and Ferrofluid Flask Refill.
- Second-tier health and endurance upgrades.
- Ammunition Drop Chance, Physical Resistance and Ammo Restock.
- Some Melee Endurance Cost reduction.
Players who already break posture consistently can exchange parts of this route for Endurance Regeneration or Critical Damage. That raises offensive ceiling but leaves less margin for a missed parry or an unsafe heal.

Method’s late-game Amber set is Dominatus, Volatile End, Iron Grip, Limit Break, Fire Breathing and Lunatic’s Grasp. Its listed late-game consumables are Stasis Whetstone, Oil/Hand Grenade, Sands of Time and Special Cartridges.
How to choose between damage styles

There is no published independent damage benchmark or universal best-in-slot ranking. Treat exact damage claims and community tier lists as patch-sensitive; the recommendations above are role-based choices tied to the posture, weak-point and transmutation systems.
Boss-by-boss weapon and build plan
General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer
Fill nephto, apply Fire Transmutation and let the burn deal damage over time. Follow with Pistol shots into his body weak points to build stagger, then use a stun attack when posture breaks. In phase one, parry his sword and spear strings. In phase two, dodge the arm attacks and eliminate summoned soldiers quickly with Pistol fire or flames before returning to Lothaire. PC Gamer’s practical advice is to use fire whenever nephto is full, parry the first phase and dodge the predictable second-phase combinations. Defeating him awards 10,000 catalysts plus a General’s Catalyst Clot worth a further 10,000 catalysts.

Shoot the arena barrels to ignite him. After he is stunned or completes an attack, move behind him and fire the Blunderbuss into the large back weak point. Rapier pokes are effective when you can stay close without being trapped by the next swing. Do not spend your close-range ammunition before the back target is exposed.

Sphinx
Phase one favors melee discipline: parry claw swipes and answer between attacks. Fire is less reliable here, so do not force a transmutation cast simply because it is equipped. In phase two, use the Pistol on the exposed face and take a close Blunderbuss shot only when the position is safe. Avoid the bug attack that inflicts poison; preserving health and flask capacity matters more than one extra burst.
Slaughtermill
This is a weak-point and traversal puzzle rather than a conventional duel. Use Stasis to stop the gears, grapple to reach exposed targets and fire the Blunderbuss into the large central eye during its damage windows. A posture-focused sword build still helps between mechanisms, but the encounter is won by controlling movement and waiting for the eye rather than trading hits in the open.
Anna, the Bride Drowned in Tears
Dodge the opening unblockable attack. When villagers spawn, clear them before they surround you, then return focus to the Bride. If Anna is nearly dead, killing her ends the add wave, so save a strong firearm burst or finisher for that final portion instead of chasing every remaining villager.

Justicar Aurelius
Parry the Eternal Guardsman-style sword strings and use Fire Transmutation followed by melee attacks between combos. The same fire-and-melee rhythm works in both forms. In the transformed phase, learn the delayed unblockable jump: wait for the timing rather than reacting to the initial motion, then punish the landing or the next recovery window.

Experiment 83
Dodge the long grab attacks and punish from behind. Both firearm weak points can be hit, but the rear target is difficult in narrow spaces. Use the Pistol when the angle is clear; hold the Blunderbuss for a reliable opening rather than firing into the front armor or risking a grab while repositioning.
The Orphan
Fire Transmutation is effective in both phases. In the lower phase, parry the arm combos while watching for the unblockable strike embedded in one sequence. When the poison beam appears, dodge laterally through it instead of backing straight away; lateral movement keeps you closer to the punish range without crossing the beam’s path.
Nephtis Superioris
Parry the long sword strings to build stagger. Stay close when he reloads or heals so he cannot reset the encounter for free. Jump the Stasis waves, then avoid the flaming unblockable slash in the later phase. Dominatus is particularly useful here because successful criticals convert those repeated parries into a faster posture break.

The Entity
The final boss’s long sword combos make parrying the central strategy. After it teleports, prioritize dodging tentacles and ranged attacks rather than forcing a counterattack. Once the posture meter breaks, use a heavy attack or finisher; this is where Dominatus, Saber or Rapier timing and your endurance investment all converge. Volatile End remains useful whenever a weak point is exposed, but survival during the teleport patterns comes first.

- Before entering: equip Dominatus and Volatile End, check that Pistol Cartridges, Hand/Oil Grenade and Protective Vial are in quick slots, and select Fire Transmutation unless the encounter’s mechanics clearly favor Stasis or direct melee.
- At the first attack: identify whether the boss gives you a parry string, a dodge-only unblockable or a weak point. Do not spend stamina attacking before you know the pattern.
- Build posture: use Saber or Rapier hits and parries. Save enough endurance for the recovery dodge; an empty stamina bar prevents both defense and the finisher that your pressure is creating.
- Exploit a weak point: switch to Pistol for precision or Blunderbuss for a large exposed target. Weak-point hits refill nephto, allowing another transmutation cycle.
- Convert the break: when posture breaks, close distance and use the heavy attack or finisher immediately. This is your highest-value melee window.
- Reset safely: after the punish, return to spacing, reload during a safe recovery and heal only when the boss cannot reach you. Iron Grip or a Protective Vial is preferable to an interrupted flask.
- Adapt by phase: switch from parry to dodge when the boss introduces unblockables, summons or ranged hazards. The build remains the same; the timing and target priority change.
What to change when a boss keeps defeating you
- You die before building posture: move points toward Maximum Health, Maximum Endurance and Blocking; use Iron Grip and Protective Vial to make healing safer.
- You run out of ammunition: stop firing at armored bodies, take only weak-point shots, use Pistol for precision and invest in Ammunition Drop Chance, Ammo Restock and Resourcefulness.
- Parries are inconsistent: use Saber’s blocking profile, keep more endurance available and treat dodgeable unblockables as dodge prompts rather than late parry attempts.
- The boss gives no safe fire window: reserve Fire Transmutation for a full nephto bar after a punish, or switch attention to posture and direct melee. Sphinx, Slaughtermill and several phase transitions reward timing more than constant status application.
- You cannot reach a weak point: use Airborne Aiming, Stasis or the encounter’s grapple route. Slaughtermill specifically requires gear control and traversal before firearm damage becomes available.
How many bosses are in the main route?
PowerPyx counts ten mandatory main bosses, with The Entity as the final fight. Their mechanics are varied enough that a single weapon is not ideal in every room: Saber supplies the broadest defense, Rapier rewards parry experts, Pistol handles precision and stagger, Blunderbuss converts close exposure windows, and transmutations solve specific phase problems.
