Use the Saber if you want the safest overall fight, or the Rapier if you can consistently perfect-parry. Bring a firearm—preferably the Blunderbuss for phase-two head shots—then combine parries, charged attacks and a critical strike after Sphinx’s 350-point posture bar breaks. Stasis can create a high-damage freeze window, while Fire Transmutation adds damage over time. Enter Chapter 4 at about level 18–20 or higher with Health, Endurance, Blocking and Melee Damage developed, plus healing and utility supplies.

These recommendations are based on 2026 guide data. Weapon values, status resistance and hitboxes can change in patches, so treat the numerical figures below as launch-period community reports rather than immutable game rules.
What makes the Chapter 4 Sphinx fight difficult
Sphinx is a two-phase Chapter 4 boss. The first phase keeps you in fast melee exchanges, using claw and tail attacks that can be blocked or parried alongside red or otherwise unblockable moves. The second phase adds ranged or energy pressure and exposes the head as a valuable target. You therefore need two complementary skills: close-range defense that builds posture, and enough ranged damage to exploit the phase-two opening.
AllThingsHow reports approximately 2,000 HP and 20,000 Catalysts for Sphinx. MetaBot.GG describes the boss as having no elemental resistances; its armor, rather than a fire, stasis or other elemental immunity, is what limits damage. Those figures and descriptions are guide-reported 2026 data, not an official developer stat sheet.

The encounter rewards patience with parries instead of trying to trade every hit. A failed aggressive sequence can fill your Crystallization meter, leave you in the path of an unblockable attack and remove the time needed to heal. Read each attack, choose block, parry or dodge, and only then look for damage.

Choose the Rapier for deliberate parry play
The Rapier is the offensive recommendation when your timing is reliable. Its fast hits let you answer a successful parry before Sphinx resets, and the boss data specifically identifies perfect parries as a substantial source of posture pressure. It is not a license to mash: whiffed attacks leave less room to react to a tail sweep or a red attack. Keep your combos short unless Sphinx has just completed a blockable sequence or is recovering from a missed strike.
Choose the Saber when survival matters more than maximum tempo
The Saber is the safer default because it supports both blocking and parrying. Blocking an ordinary claw or tail hit lets you stay in position when a perfect parry is uncertain; parrying remains the better answer whenever you have read the timing. The Saber is particularly useful while learning which animations are red and which are safe to contest. Its value is consistency: fewer failed reads become full damage taken, and more openings remain available for charged or heavy attacks.

Where the Claymore fits
A Claymore can be used if it is already your practiced weapon, but the cited guides do not establish comparative Claymore numbers for Sphinx in attack speed, block safety, parry performance or posture damage. Do not switch to it expecting a documented matchup advantage. Use the weapon whose defensive timing you know, and reserve heavy swings for confirmed recovery windows rather than trying to out-damage the boss in neutral.
Firearms: Blunderbuss or Pistol?

Bring a firearm even on a melee build. The Blunderbuss is the clearest burst choice for the exposed head in phase two: wait until the target is safely available, fire, and return to movement rather than standing still for a second shot. A Pistol is a practical alternative if you prefer repeatable ranged pressure or find the close-range head angle difficult. Neither gun replaces parrying; ammunition is a way to capitalize on a window, not a reason to remain at range while Sphinx controls the arena.
Abilities that matter against Sphinx
Stasis
Stasis is the strongest burst-oriented utility in the available matchup data. MetaBot.GG reports 550 damage from a full freeze. Save it for a moment when Sphinx cannot immediately force you into an unblockable attack, then spend the freeze window on a high-value melee sequence or an exposed-head Blunderbuss shot. A partial or interrupted application should not be treated as the same 550-damage result; the figure is specifically for a full freeze.

Fire Transmutation
Fire adds damage over time and is a dependable supplemental choice for the all-round setup. Apply it when you have a safe opening, then return to defense while the effect runs. The available data does not establish a special fire vulnerability, so choose Fire for its ongoing damage rather than because Sphinx is documented as weak to the element.
Dominatus II, Volatile End, grenades and special rounds
The preparation guidance for a level-20 respec lists Dominatus II, Volatile End, grenades and special rounds among the useful tools to bring. Treat them as utility and burst resources: use them during a confirmed opening, after a posture break or when a phase transition gives you space. Do not empty every consumable before the second phase, where the exposed head and ranged pressure create the clearest return on a saved resource.
Preparation before entering the arena
- Reach the recommended threshold. Game Devourer and iTechGuides both place preparation around level 18–20; the respec advice specifically recommends level 20 or higher. A lower-level attempt is possible, but it leaves less margin for an incorrect dodge, a missed parry or accumulated Crystallization.
- Respec for the encounter. Prioritize Health, Endurance, Blocking and Melee Damage. Health gives you room to survive a mistake, Endurance supports repeated defensive actions, Blocking improves the Saber’s safety net, and Melee Damage shortens the number of posture cycles required.
- Stock healing and utility. Carry healing items, grenades, special rounds and at least five Ferrofluid Flasks, as listed in the preparation guide. Keep enough healing for phase two instead of spending every charge to erase minor chip damage in phase one.
- Set your firearm and ability before the fog gate. Put the Blunderbuss or Pistol on an immediately reachable slot and select Stasis or Fire Transmutation before the arena starts. Changing equipment during a fast melee sequence costs more than it saves.
- Decide your defensive rule. With a Rapier, commit to practicing perfect-parry timing. With a Saber, block when the timing is uncertain and parry when the animation is familiar. In either case, dodge red or unblockable attacks.
How to read Sphinx’s attacks
Blockable claw and tail strikes
Ordinary claw and tail attacks are your main posture opportunities. A successful parry both avoids the hit and drains Sphinx’s posture pool. If your timing is late, a block is preferable to standing in the attack; after the sequence ends, answer with a short punish or a charged hit if there is clear recovery.

Red and unblockable attacks
Do not try to parry attacks marked red or otherwise identified as unblockable. The data specifically calls out Combo 3, Combo 4, Vanish and the posture-break slam as attacks to dodge. Create lateral distance or move through the attack’s line, then re-center before attempting damage. A dodge used early can leave you inside the follow-up, so wait for the attack to commit rather than rolling on the first movement cue.
Vanish and the posture-break slam
Vanish removes the normal rhythm of a melee exchange; keep your camera and movement ready for the reappearance instead of beginning a long combo. The posture-break slam is also a dodge check, not a posture-trading opportunity. Once either attack has finished, look for the next blockable claw or tail animation before resuming pressure.

MetaBot.GG reports a 350-point posture pool, described as the smallest among the bosses in its data set. The exact live value may change, but the practical lesson is stable: parries are the fastest way to create a break, while random light attacks are not a substitute for defensive timing.

- Stay at a distance where claw and tail animations are visible.
- Parry those blockable strikes; block instead if the timing is not yet secure.
- Use a charged or heavy hit only after a parry, a missed attack or another confirmed recovery window.
- Watch the posture meter rather than chasing a final hit. Stop attacking if Sphinx begins a red move.
- When posture breaks, perform the critical attack immediately. The cited data reports 300 damage for the critical, so this is your most important melee cash-out.
- After the critical animation, reset your spacing. Do not assume the boss remains safe to hit once the damage number appears.
The 300-damage critical and 350-point posture figures are guide-reported 2026 values. They explain why a patient parry cycle can outperform a reckless damage race, but they should not be used as a promise that every patch will display exactly those numbers.
Managing Crystallization
Many claw and tail attacks build Crystallization. The status meter is a resource warning: if it is rising quickly, continuing to trade hits can turn a winning exchange into a forced defensive sequence. Stop attacking, create enough space to avoid the next strike and let the meter drain. Healing during this reset is safer than trying to finish a combo while the status is near its limit.
Crystallization management changes the value of the Saber. Its ability to block lets you disengage from an uncertain sequence without taking the full hit, while the Rapier asks you to make the parry more often. Neither weapon prevents the status automatically; the solution is to stop accepting repeated claw and tail contact.

Phase one: build posture without forcing damage
- Open at a medium distance and observe one complete attack cycle before committing.
- Parry ordinary claw or tail strikes. If the animation is unclear, block with the Saber or retreat until you can identify it.
- After a successful parry, use a short Rapier string or a measured Saber punish. Charged and heavy attacks are best after clear recovery, not during neutral.
- Dodge Combo 3, Combo 4, Vanish and the posture-break slam. These are not safe posture trades.
- When Crystallization rises, disengage until the meter drains. Preserve healing and ammunition for the second phase.
- Continue the parry cycle until the 350-point posture pool breaks, then take the 300-damage critical.
Phase two: exploit the exposed head
- Re-establish spacing after the transition; phase two adds ranged or energy threats, so do not stand in the center waiting for a melee animation.
- When the head is exposed and the line is safe, fire the Blunderbuss for burst damage. Use the Pistol instead if you need to remain farther away or cannot reliably place the spread.
- Use Stasis when a full freeze is realistic and you have a safe route to the target. A full freeze is reported at 550 damage; do not spend it merely to interrupt a harmless movement.
- Apply Fire Transmutation during a stable opening, then return to dodging and parrying while its damage-over-time effect continues.
- Keep enough Endurance for the next red attack. Ranged damage is not worth exhausting the meter that would have carried you through an unblockable move.
- After each head shot or ability use, resume the same color rule: block or parry ordinary strikes and dodge red attacks.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Trying to parry every animation: Red attacks, Combo 3, Combo 4, Vanish and the posture-break slam are dodge checks. Reserve parries for blockable claw and tail strikes.
- Using the Blunderbuss from too far away: Its recommendation is tied to close-range burst on the exposed head. Move to a safe firing distance, shoot once, then reposition.
- Saving every ability until death: Stasis and Fire are most useful when they convert a confirmed opening into damage. Use them with a plan while retaining at least some utility for phase two.
- Ignoring Crystallization: A nearly full meter makes another trade dangerous. Break contact and let it drain.
- Entering underprepared: If ordinary hits remove most of your health or you cannot dodge twice in succession, respec toward Health and Endurance, improve Blocking and Melee Damage, and return with healing, grenades, special rounds and five or more Ferrofluid Flasks.
- Assuming elemental weakness: The available data reports no elemental resistances, not a special weakness. Fire and Stasis are useful for their documented effects, not because Sphinx is confirmed to take bonus elemental damage.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The matchup guidance comes from 2026 community and guide reporting rather than an official developer strategy sheet. No verified frame-by-frame parry table was found, and weapon values, status resistance and hitboxes may change with patches. Use the attack-color rule, posture strategy and loadout roles as the durable parts of the plan; verify exact damage numbers in your current build if a patch has changed the encounter.
