For full Photoshop-style editing on an iPhone, install Photoshop for iPhone—Adobe’s dedicated mobile app. It supports selections, layers, masks, blending, retouching, object removal, Generative Fill and Generative Expand without requiring Photoshop on a computer. For faster filters, corrections and collages, use the separate Photoshop Express app. If you want to edit in Safari or another iPhone browser, there is an important limitation: Adobe currently allows viewing and commenting on mobile browsers, not editing your own photos.
Which Photoshop-like option works on an iPhone?
There are three different Adobe workflows, and they are not interchangeable:

Adobe announced Photoshop for iPhone as a phone-first version of Photoshop and describes it as compatible with Photoshop across desktop, web and iPad. That compatibility supports moving a project between devices; it does not mean every desktop feature or workflow appears on the phone.

Photoshop for iPhone is the closest match to the traditional Photoshop experience available directly on an iPhone. Adobe documents tools for combining and blending images, making selections, working with layers and masks, healing spots, removing or changing objects, and using Firefly-powered Generative Fill and Generative Expand.

Build composites with layers, selections and masks
Use the app when an edit depends on isolating part of an image rather than applying an effect to the whole photograph. A typical composite workflow is to import a background, add another image as a layer, select the subject, refine the selection, and use a mask to hide unwanted areas. Blending controls can then combine the layers more naturally.
Selections are useful for changing only a sky, person, product or other region. Masks are safer than erasing because they let you hide and reveal portions of a layer while preserving the underlying image. The phone interface is designed for lighter, on-the-go work, so a complex multi-hour desktop production may still be more comfortable on a larger screen.
Remove distractions or change an object
For an unwanted person, sign, cable or blemish, select the area and use the app’s removal or healing tools. Adobe’s mobile description also includes object recoloring and replacement. Results depend on the surrounding pixels and the complexity of the background; inspect edges and repeated textures before exporting.

Use Generative Fill and Generative Expand selectively
Generative Fill can replace or add content in a selected area, while Generative Expand extends the canvas and generates pixels beyond the original frame. These are useful when a crop is too tight, a background needs extending, or an object must be replaced without manually cloning every detail.

Generative tools are not a guarantee of factual reconstruction. Check faces, text, logos, hands, architecture and repeating patterns at high zoom. If the generated result is unsuitable, undo it or try a smaller, more precise selection rather than repeatedly expanding the affected area.
Move work into other Adobe mobile tools
Adobe lists links from Photoshop for iPhone to Express, Fresco, Lightroom and Adobe Stock assets. This makes the app useful as part of a mobile workflow: make a layered or retouched image in Photoshop, continue a quick design in Express, adjust photographs in Lightroom, or use another listed Adobe surface when the project calls for it. The availability of a particular handoff or asset may depend on signing in and on your account.
How to edit a photo in Photoshop for iPhone
App labels and release notes can change, so the wording below describes the documented workflow rather than promising a fixed button position. Use the closest matching command in the current iPhone version.
- Install and open Photoshop for iPhone. Download the app from the iPhone App Store. Sign in if the app requests an Adobe account; account prompts and premium entitlements can vary.
- Start a project and import a photo. Choose the command for creating a project or opening an image, then select a photo from your iPhone library. Grant Photos permission only when needed.
- Make a non-destructive first pass. Crop or resize the image, then duplicate a layer before major changes when the interface offers that option. Keeping an original layer makes it easier to compare or recover from an edit.
- Select the area to change. Use the selection or Tap Select control to target a subject or object. Zoom in and refine the boundary around hair, fingers and other detailed edges.
- Choose the appropriate correction. Use Spot Healing for small marks, object removal for distractions, or recoloring and replacement for a larger selected object. Review the result against nearby texture and lighting.
- Add or combine imagery. Import another image as a layer when creating a composite. Reposition and resize it, then use a mask to hide areas that should not appear. Adjust blending when the layer needs to merge with the background.
- Try a generative edit only after the selection is ready. Apply Generative Fill to the selected region or Generative Expand to extend the canvas. Inspect every generated variation and undo or revise the selection if the result introduces artifacts.
- Save or hand off the finished image. Export a copy in the format and size required by the destination, or continue through a linked Adobe workflow. Keep the original photo until you have checked the exported file.
The mobile app can be free to download while particular tools or expanded capabilities require a subscription. If a feature is locked, follow the in-app entitlement prompt rather than assuming the app is malfunctioning.

Choose Photoshop Express for quick edits and collages
Photoshop Express is a separate iOS app, not a simplified name for Photoshop for iPhone. Adobe’s iOS help documentation positions it as a free app for quick photo edits and collages. The US App Store listing includes adjustments, corrections, filters, dehazing, red-eye correction, crop and perspective correction, retouching, collage layouts, text, video edits and sharing.
Express is the better starting point when you need a polished result quickly and do not need a layered composite. It also lists support for RAW and TIFF input, which can matter when a camera workflow produces files beyond ordinary phone JPEGs. Premium adds extra features and more precise controls, so check the current listing and the account prompt before promising a specific control at no cost.
A practical Photoshop Express workflow
- Open Photoshop Express and select a photo, RAW file or TIFF that the current version supports.
- Apply basic adjustments and corrections first. Fix exposure, color or perspective before adding a strong filter.
- Use retouching for localized marks and red-eye correction when those controls are appropriate.
- Choose a filter or theme at a restrained strength; compare the result with the original before saving.
- For a social post or announcement, select a collage layout or add text, then check that important faces and edges are not cropped.
- Save a copy or share the finished image after confirming the output dimensions and appearance.
Switch to Photoshop for iPhone when you need layers, masks, selections that isolate an object, or generative replacement and expansion. Starting in Express and expecting to reopen the project as a fully layered Photoshop file can lead to a different workflow than intended.
Can you edit photos in Photoshop on an iPhone browser?
Not currently, according to Adobe’s Photoshop on the web FAQ. Adobe states that Photoshop can be edited in non-mobile web browsers, while mobile browsers can view and comment. Therefore, opening Photoshop on the web in Safari or another iPhone browser is not a supported way to upload and edit your own photos.

The web version is a separate cloud-document workflow. Adobe says it includes common image-editing features but not every desktop feature, and that documents are saved as cloud documents. Its documented browser requirements name Chrome, Edge and Firefox on desktop; browser support and requirements can change.
Photoshop on the web is useful when you are on a computer where installing software is undesirable or impossible. It is not a substitute for the native iPhone app when the editing device is an iPhone browser. Guided tutorials may be available without an account, but that does not provide free editing of a personal image.

Prices, plan terms, regional availability, app versions and feature entitlements are volatile. Check Adobe’s current product page and the App Store listing for your country immediately before subscribing or explaining a feature to someone else.

Use Photoshop for iPhone when…
- You need to isolate a subject or object with selections.
- Your image requires multiple layers, masks or blended elements.
- You want to remove, recolor or replace an object rather than apply a global filter.
- You need Generative Fill or Generative Expand on the phone.
- You expect to continue the project in Photoshop on another supported device.
Use Photoshop Express when…
- You need exposure, color, perspective or other quick corrections.
- You want filters, retouching, red-eye correction or dehazing.
- You are making a collage, adding text or preparing a fast social image.
- You do not need a layered project that remains editable element by element.
Use Photoshop on the web when…
- You are working in a supported non-mobile browser on a computer.
- You need cloud documents and a project that can move between supported surfaces.
- You have a Photoshop plan or eligible trial and accept that web Photoshop lacks some desktop features.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing the three products
“Photoshop on my phone” can mean the dedicated Photoshop app, Photoshop Express or the web editor. Check the app name before following a tutorial. A layer-and-mask instruction for Photoshop for iPhone will not map directly to a quick-edit screen in Express, and neither should be confused with the mobile-browser view of Photoshop on the web.

Assuming a free download means unlimited free features
Both mobile listings describe premium or in-app-purchase boundaries. If a control is marked premium, verify the current plan and region instead of searching for a hidden free switch. Adobe’s US price for a standalone plan is separate from the mobile download question.
Expecting the phone app to reproduce the entire desktop product
Adobe positions the iPhone app as compatible across Photoshop surfaces, but mobile editing is intended for work on the go. The web FAQ also says that not all desktop features are present on the web. Plan a handoff for unusually large composites, demanding typography, extensive masking or any workflow that depends on a desktop-only command.
Trying to edit through Safari on iPhone
Adobe’s current FAQ limits mobile browsers to viewing and commenting. Install the native app for phone editing, or move to a supported desktop browser for Photoshop on the web.

Generative Fill, Generative Expand, object replacement and automated retouching can create convincing but incorrect details. Zoom into edges, text, faces, hands and repeated patterns. Keep an unedited original and export a copy so an aggressive correction does not destroy the only source.
A reliable no-desktop decision in one minute
- If you need layers, masks, selections or generative edits, choose Photoshop for iPhone.
- If you need a fast correction, filter, retouch, collage or text overlay, choose Photoshop Express.
- If you specifically want a browser workflow, use Photoshop on the web from a supported non-mobile browser; do not rely on an iPhone browser for editing.
- Before paying, check the current App Store listing, Adobe plan page, country, billing term and the feature entitlement shown in your account.
Adobe senior vice president of digital media Ashley Still described the iPhone launch this way: “We’re excited to bring the limitless creative possibilities of Photoshop to mobile, making the app’s iconic image editing and design capabilities accessible for everyone from professional artists and designers to a whole new generation of creators trying Photoshop for the first time.” The practical meaning is straightforward: the native iPhone app is the route for Photoshop-like editing without installing desktop software, Express is the faster alternative, and the iPhone browser remains a view-and-comment surface rather than a full editor.
