The best transfer method depends on the job. For a complete move to a new iPhone, use Apple’s setup transfer with Move to iOS, preferably with a data-capable USB-C cable when both phones support the required connection. For a new Android, use Android’s copy-data flow during setup, then handle files and iCloud Photos separately because they are excluded from that transfer. For a few nearby files, use Quick Share to an iPhone through AirDrop discovery on supported Android phones, or use Quick Share’s QR option. A computer remains the dependable fallback for local photos, videos and documents.
The sections below separate whole-phone migration, selective file sharing and cloud-library moves so you can choose a route that matches your phones, storage and file formats.
Choose the route before you start
Decide whether you are moving everything to a replacement phone or sending only a few items. The destination’s setup state is equally important: the official phone-to-phone tools are designed primarily for the initial setup process.
| Situation | Best first choice | What it handles | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android to a new iPhone | Apple setup transfer with Move to iOS, or the supported direct-transfer option | Contacts, message history, SMS, camera photos and videos, albums, files and folders and other listed categories | Run it during iPhone setup; check device and software eligibility, available iPhone capacity and power; a direct USB-C connection can be faster |
| iPhone to a new Android | Android setup copy flow using a cable or the wireless method offered by the phone | Content selected by the setup wizard | Keep both phones connected and check storage; files and iCloud Photos are excluded from this setup flow |
| A few files from Android to iPhone nearby | Quick Share using AirDrop discovery, when the Android model supports it | Selected photos or files | The iPhone recipient chooses “Everyone for 10 minutes” in AirDrop; support varies by Android model |
| A few files when AirDrop discovery is unavailable | Quick Share QR code | Selected photos or files downloaded in the iPhone browser | Internet is required; Google documents a 10 GB per 24-hour allowance and 24-hour file availability |
| Android photos or videos after iPhone setup is complete | Copy through a computer, then sync to the iPhone | Local photos and videos, plus manually handled documents | Android camera media is commonly in the DCIM folder; this is a manual process |
| A Google Photos library to iCloud Photos | Google Takeout’s direct transfer to iCloud Photos | Eligible photos and videos copied between cloud libraries | iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive and sufficient iCloud storage are required; eligibility and format limits apply |
No single method works for every Android model, iPhone generation, operating-system combination or file type. Check the current platform instructions immediately before a large migration.

Move Android content to a new iPhone
Apple’s Move from Android to iPhone or iPad and Move content from Android to iOS instructions describe the main route. It is an initial-setup transfer: if the iPhone has already been configured, use the computer or cloud alternatives later in this article.
Prepare both phones
- Check the iPhone’s free capacity against the Android content you intend to select. A transfer can fail or stop short if the destination cannot hold the chosen data.
- Charge both phones or keep them connected to power for the entire operation.
- Install pending system updates only if they do not risk interrupting the migration, and confirm that the particular Android model and software version are supported by Apple’s current instructions.
- Have a USB-C data cable available if both phones have compatible USB-C ports. Apple says, “Alternatively, you can also use a USB-C cable to directly connect your Android device and your iPhone for a faster transfer.” The cable must support data, not charging only.
- Do not erase the Android phone until you have opened representative photos, videos, messages and documents on the iPhone.
Transfer during iPhone setup
- Turn on the new iPhone and follow setup until the screen offering to move data from another device appears.
- Choose the Android transfer option. Install and open Move to iOS on the Android phone if the setup path asks for the app; on supported combinations, Apple also documents a direct setup transfer without that app.
- Follow the on-screen connection instructions. If you are using a cable, connect the phones directly with the compatible USB-C data cable; otherwise follow the wireless prompts shown by the two devices.
- When the iPhone displays a code, enter it on the Android phone. Allow the requested permissions so the transfer tool can read the categories you selected.
- Review the content list and select what you need. Apple lists contacts, message history, SMS, camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders and other categories among the items that can be transferred.
- Leave both phones together, powered and untouched until the iPhone progress indicator finishes. Interrupting the connection or switching away at the wrong time can leave the migration incomplete.
- Complete iPhone setup, then verify several albums, recent videos, message threads and document folders before removing anything from the Android phone.
What still needs manual handling
Apple identifies music, books and PDFs as items that require manual handling after migration rather than an automatic promise that every category will move. App availability and app-specific data also depend on the iPhone versions of those apps and their own sign-in or backup systems. Treat the transfer list as a set of supported content categories, not a guarantee that every application, account, protected file or special format will be reproduced.
If the iPhone is already set up
Apple’s manual instructions at Move content from Android to iOS describe copying Android photos and videos to a computer and then syncing them to the iPhone. On many Android phones, camera media is in the DCIM folder. For documents, either sign in to the cloud service where the files already live on the iPhone or copy the files through a computer and sync them. This route takes longer, but it avoids erasing and restarting the iPhone solely to reach the setup transfer screen.

Use the Android setup wizard
- Start the new Android phone and select the option to copy apps and data from an iPhone or iPad.
- Choose the wireless or cable method offered by the phone. If using a cable, make sure it supports data and that any required adapter fits both ports.
- Review the storage requirement before selecting content. The new phone must have enough room for the material you choose.
- Follow the prompts on both phones, approve the connection and leave the devices connected until the Android progress screen completes.
- Sign in to the relevant accounts and open a sample of transferred photos, messages and contacts. Do not wipe the iPhone until verification is complete.
Know the setup exclusions
Google explicitly says that files and iCloud Photos do not transfer in this setup flow. Therefore, an apparently successful phone migration can still leave documents, downloads and an iCloud-based photo library behind. Google’s guide points to a separate iCloud-to-Google Photos request for photos and videos; that cloud-library operation is different from the in-setup copy and should be planned separately.
When to use the cable
A cable is useful when the Android setup wizard offers it and the ports and operating systems are compatible. It does not turn excluded categories into included ones: files and iCloud Photos still need their own route. Keep both phones connected for the full operation, and follow the new Android’s model-specific prompts if they differ from Google’s general description.
Send a few files from Android to iPhone nearby
For a handful of photos or documents, a full migration is unnecessary. Google’s Quick Share instructions document two Android-to-iPhone paths: AirDrop discovery on eligible Android phones and a QR-code transfer for phones without that support.
Quick Share through AirDrop discovery
- On the iPhone, open Settings, choose General, then AirDrop, and select Everyone for 10 Minutes. The recipient must do this before the Android phone searches.
- On Android, select the photos or files, tap Share, choose Quick Share and wait for the nearby iPhone to appear through the supported AirDrop route.
- Ask the iPhone user to accept the AirDrop notification. Keep the phones near each other while the transfer runs.
- Return AirDrop to a preferred setting after the 10-minute discovery window if the recipient does not want to remain discoverable.
Google lists Pixel 8a or later and certain devices from other Android manufacturers as supporting this route. The supported-device list can change, so check Google’s current Use Quick Share on your Android device page and the exact model’s software documentation before relying on it. AirDrop discovery is not a native feature on every Android phone.

Quick Share with a QR code
- Select the items in Quick Share and choose the QR-code option when the nearby AirDrop route is unavailable.
- On the iPhone, scan the displayed QR code with the Camera app or an equivalent QR reader.
- Open the resulting page in the browser and download the files.
- Save the downloads to Photos or the Files app and confirm that each item opened correctly.
This QR method needs an internet connection. Google documents a 10 GB allowance per 24-hour period and says the shared files remain available for 24 hours. Those are service limits, not a guarantee of a particular transfer speed. Large videos may take longer and consume the recipient’s mobile data unless the iPhone is on Wi-Fi.
AirDrop between Apple devices
For completeness, Apple’s How to use AirDrop on your iPhone or iPad instructions require nearby Apple devices with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. That is useful when both endpoints are Apple devices, but AirDrop alone is not the general Android-to-iPhone solution; use the Quick Share paths above for that direction.
Use a computer as the reliable manual fallback
A computer is the most predictable option when the iPhone is already configured, the Android model is not eligible for a direct setup transfer or you need to inspect and organize files before importing them. Apple documents the Android-to-computer-to-iPhone process in Move content from Android to iOS.

- Connect the Android phone to the computer with a data-capable cable and unlock it.
- Choose the Android USB mode that exposes files, then open the phone’s internal storage. Camera media is commonly under
DCIM, although screenshots, downloads and app exports may be in other folders. - Copy the required folders to a clearly named folder on the computer. Keep the originals until the iPhone copy is checked.
- Disconnect the Android phone safely and connect the iPhone.
- Use the computer’s iPhone photo-sync method to select the copied folders and sync them. The exact controls depend on the computer’s operating system and current Apple software.
- Open the Photos app on the iPhone and inspect dates, albums and representative video files.
Documents and other files
For documents, Apple suggests signing in to an existing cloud service on the iPhone or copying files through a computer and syncing them. A cloud-drive sign-in is usually simplest when the files are already online; a computer gives you more control over folder names and file selection. Music, books and PDFs may need their own manual import process, and app-specific databases should be exported using that app’s supported method rather than copied blindly from Android storage.

Organize before importing
- Separate camera originals, screenshots, downloads and work documents so the iPhone library is easier to search.
- Keep original extensions and filenames until you confirm that the destination app supports them.
- Copy, do not move, during the first pass. Delete the Android originals only after opening samples on the iPhone and checking the computer backup.
- For very large libraries, transfer in dated batches so a failed sync does not force you to restart everything.
Copy a Google Photos library to iCloud Photos
If your photos already live in Google Photos rather than only on the Android phone, Apple documents a direct Google Takeout transfer at Transfer a copy of your photos and videos to iCloud Photos. It copies the library between cloud services without first downloading the entire collection to the phone.
Requirements and eligibility
- Turn on iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive for the Apple Account that will receive the transfer.
- Make sure the iCloud account has enough storage for the eligible incoming items.
- Confirm that the Google account and region are eligible. Apple excludes child accounts and Managed Apple Accounts, and accounts with Advanced Data Protection enabled cannot use this transfer path.
- Keep the Google Photos originals until the iCloud library has been checked. Apple says the transfer does not delete the Google originals.
Start the transfer
- Open Apple’s transfer instructions and follow the link into Google Takeout’s transfer process.
- Choose Google Photos as the source and iCloud Photos as the destination, then sign in and authorize both accounts.
- Review the estimated content and available iCloud capacity before confirming.
- Submit the transfer and wait. Apple says completion can take hours to days, depending on the library and service processing.
- When notified, open iCloud Photos on the iPhone or another Apple device and inspect recent, old and edited items.
Formats and where unsupported items go
Apple lists JPEG, HEIC, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP and most MP4 and MOV files as supported for iCloud Photos. Items that cannot go into iCloud Photos, including RAW files, are sent to iCloud Drive instead. This means a completed transfer may place some content in the Files app rather than in the Photos timeline. Preserve that distinction when checking that every folder arrived.
Do not confuse a library copy with phone setup
The Google Photos-to-iCloud operation is a cloud-library transfer, not a replacement for the iPhone setup migration. Conversely, Google’s iPhone-to-Android setup guide excludes iCloud Photos and directs users to a separate iCloud-to-Google Photos request. Choose the direction that matches the library you want to keep, and allow for enough destination-cloud capacity before starting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck storage, formats and metadata before choosing
Phone capacity
Whole-phone setup tools need room on the destination for the selected categories. A cloud transfer also needs enough space in the destination cloud account. Compare the size of the source photo and video library with available iPhone, Android or iCloud capacity before you begin; otherwise you may have to repeat a partial migration after freeing space.

File location
A file on the Android phone, a file in a cloud drive and an item in Google Photos are different starting points. Move-to-phone tools primarily read device content during setup. Cloud-library tools operate on the online collection. A computer route can combine both, but only after you copy the files to the computer.
Formats and special media
Standard JPEG photos and common MP4 or MOV videos are generally the least troublesome. Apple specifically identifies RAW files as an exception in the Google Photos-to-iCloud process, where they are placed in iCloud Drive. Do not assume that every camera format, edited version, album relationship or metadata field will appear identically in the destination app; open representative originals and edits before deleting the source.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The transfer option is missing
- If the iPhone has already completed setup, the Move to iOS option will not be available in the normal setup sequence. Use the computer or cloud route, or erase and restart only after making a verified backup.
- If the Android setup wizard does not show an iPhone copy option, check the phone maker’s current instructions and software version; Google notes that steps vary by device.
- If Quick Share does not find the iPhone, verify that the recipient selected “Everyone for 10 Minutes” and that the Android model is on Google’s supported list.
The transfer stops or appears frozen
- Keep both phones powered, unlocked when requested and physically connected for the full operation.
- Check that the cable is a data cable and that adapters fit securely; a charging-only cable cannot carry the migration data.
- Free destination storage and retry with fewer categories if the operation repeatedly fails near the end.
- Do not start a second migration while the first progress indicator is still active. Wait for an explicit completion message.
Photos or documents are missing afterward
- Look in the expected app and folder: imported photos may be in Photos, while unsupported cloud-library items such as RAW files may be in iCloud Drive.
- Check Android folders beyond DCIM, including Downloads and app-specific export folders, when using the computer method.
- Remember that files and iCloud Photos are excluded from Google’s iPhone-to-Android setup flow; perform the separate cloud or manual transfer.
- For cloud imports, confirm the destination account, region eligibility and remaining storage before assuming the operation failed.
Privacy and cleanup
Nearby sharing exposes a device only according to the recipient’s discovery setting. After a Quick Share/AirDrop exchange, return AirDrop from “Everyone for 10 Minutes” if appropriate. For cloud transfers, retain the source library until you have checked older items, videos, edits and documents, then remove duplicates deliberately rather than deleting the source automatically.

Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Replacing the phone? Use the destination phone’s setup transfer first.
- Android to iPhone? Use Move to iOS or the supported direct USB-C setup connection, and verify capacity and eligibility.
- iPhone to Android? Use Android’s setup copy flow, then separately move files and iCloud Photos.
- Only a few nearby items? Try Quick Share with AirDrop discovery; use the QR route when the Android model lacks that support.
- Already finished setup? Copy through a computer or sign in to the cloud service containing the files.
- Moving an entire Google Photos library? Use the Google Takeout-to-iCloud Photos transfer after checking account eligibility, supported formats and iCloud capacity.
- Before erasing anything? Open samples from every important category on the destination and keep a separate backup.
