Crunchyroll is the best first stop when anime is your main reason for subscribing. Netflix and Hulu make more sense when you want anime alongside broader television, films, and originals. All three have a PS5 app route, but catalogs, subtitles, dubs, plans, and availability vary by country. Search for the exact series and season in your region before paying.

PlayStation describes Netflix as supporting television and film viewing on PS5, and the PlayStation help information lists both PS5 and PS5 Pro. Compatible Netflix playback can reach 4K Ultra HD, but “up to 4K” is a technical ceiling rather than a promise that every anime episode will play at that resolution.

Choose Hulu when current television matters as much as anime
Hulu’s PS5 route is aimed at a broad service that includes full seasons, current-season episodes, originals and movies. It can be sensible if you already use Hulu for those categories and want anime in the same app. The available information does not establish that Hulu has a larger or smaller anime catalog than Crunchyroll or Netflix, so verify individual titles rather than choosing it from a presumed library size.
Check a title before you subscribe
Streaming rights are the deciding variable. A service may carry a franchise but not the season you need, may offer only subtitled or dubbed episodes, or may remove a title when a license expires. Use this sequence for each service you are considering:
- Write down the exact anime name, season number, film or special, and preferred audio or subtitle language.
- Open the service’s local website or app while signed in to the account and region you will use on PS5.
- Search for the title and open its detail page rather than relying on a general web result.
- Check that the required season or episode list is present. A show page with only one season may not satisfy your request.
- Confirm whether the page lists the dub, subtitles and any required language options.
- Repeat the search on another service before paying. Do not infer availability from a friend’s catalog in another country.
This title-by-title check is more reliable than claims that one platform always has the biggest anime collection. Catalogs and rights are not static.
How to install anime apps on PS5
Prepare the console
Connect the PS5 to the internet, sign in to PlayStation Network and install pending system updates. From the PS5 home screen, open the Media area and use the search field or the entertainment-app listing. Menu labels can change with system updates, but the process is the same: find the official app, select Download, wait for installation, then open it and sign in.
Install only the app published for the service you intend to use. If an app does not appear, check the country associated with your PlayStation account and the service’s local availability before repeatedly restarting the console.
Install Crunchyroll
- Update the PS5 system software. Crunchyroll’s supported-device information lists PS5 system software 6.00.00.00 as the minimum requirement.
- Open Media on the PS5 home screen and search for Crunchyroll.
- Select the official Crunchyroll result and choose Download.
- Launch the app after installation and sign in or create an account.
- Search for the anime, season and language options you confirmed in your region.
If installation fails, check Crunchyroll’s current supported-device page and the PS5 update status. App requirements can change after the minimum version listed above.

Install Netflix
- Open the PS5 Media area.
- Search for Netflix or select it from the entertainment-app row.
- Choose the official app, select Download and wait for it to finish.
- Open Netflix and sign in with the account that has the plan you want to use.
- Search for the specific anime and inspect its playback details before starting a full season.
Netflix’s PlayStation help information lists PS5 and PS5 Pro and supports playback up to 4K Ultra HD. The app can therefore be installed on either console, but resolution still depends on the conditions described below.

Install Hulu
- Open Media on PS5 and search for Hulu.
- Select the official Hulu app and choose Download.
- Launch Hulu and sign in to your account.
- Search for the anime and verify that the required season and episode list is available in your market.
Hulu’s device information lists PlayStation 5. The presence of the app does not mean that every Hulu title is licensed in every country.
Crunchyroll on PS5: what it is best at
Crunchyroll is the most natural starting point for an anime-centered PS5 setup. You can browse within an anime-oriented service instead of treating anime as one category among many general television and film selections. That focus is useful when you want to discover related series, follow a particular genre or keep your watchlist centered on animation from Japan and other anime-producing markets.
The strongest practical reason to choose it is not an unverified number of titles; it is the alignment between the service’s purpose and your viewing habit. If most of your planned viewing is anime, begin by checking Crunchyroll for every required title and season. If one key show is missing in your country, compare the other services before committing.
On the technical side, PS5 is an officially listed supported device, with PS5 system software 6.00.00.00 shown as the minimum in the supported-device information. Keep the console updated because a future app release can change compatibility requirements. Installation uses the PS5 Media area and the app’s Download command.
When Crunchyroll may not be enough
- Your household also expects a large selection of non-anime television and movies.
- The specific season, film or dub you want is licensed to another service in your country.
- You want one subscription that serves several viewers with unrelated entertainment tastes.
Those are catalog and household-fit questions, not proof that Crunchyroll is technically inferior on PS5.

Netflix on PS5: anime with broad entertainment
Netflix is the better comparison when anime is important but not the only reason for keeping a subscription. Its PS5 and PS5 Pro support gives you a direct console playback route, while the wider television and film offering can reduce the need to switch services for non-anime viewing. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on the exact shows you want and the other people using the account.
Understanding the 4K claim
Netflix lists streaming up to 4K Ultra HD on PlayStation. “Up to” matters: Netflix conditions 4K on the plan, the individual title, the playback device and the internet connection. A PS5 connected to a 4K television does not automatically make every anime episode 4K. Check the plan and title information in your account, and regard 4K as a possible maximum rather than a universal format.

- Your household watches enough general television and films to value one broad service.
- Your display and plan meet the requirements for the higher-resolution playback you want.
Hulu on PS5: broad TV access, with a major offline limitation
Hulu’s PlayStation 5 support is useful for viewers who combine anime with full seasons, current-season episodes, Hulu originals and movies. Those categories are the reason to compare Hulu with Netflix rather than treating it as a direct anime-only rival to Crunchyroll. The available service descriptions do not establish a ranking of anime depth, so search the shows you care about.
Hulu downloads do not work on PS5
Hulu’s help information published October 2, 2026 says downloads require an eligible Premium (No Ads) plan and a supported mobile device. It also says downloads are not available on living-room devices. PS5 is a living-room device, so you cannot download Hulu episodes to the console for offline playback. A plan that includes mobile downloads does not change that PS5 limitation.
This distinction matters if you expected to download episodes before travel or during an unreliable internet connection. Use Hulu on PS5 for connected streaming, and use a supported mobile device only if your plan and the device meet Hulu’s download requirements.

When Hulu is the practical winner
- You already use Hulu for current-season television or originals.
- The anime title you want is confirmed in your local Hulu catalog.
- You accept that PS5 playback requires an internet connection and does not support Hulu offline downloads.
Streaming quality and connection decisions
The services do not offer identical technical promises. Netflix explicitly lists up to 4K Ultra HD on PS5 and PS5 Pro, subject to plan, title, device and connection requirements. The evidence supplied for Crunchyroll and Hulu establishes PS5 app support but does not establish a universal resolution, frame-rate or audio guarantee for every title. Do not assume that all three services deliver the same format simply because they run on the same console.

- Plan: Netflix’s higher-resolution availability depends on the subscription tier.
- Title: The individual anime must be encoded and offered in the desired format.
- Connection: The network must meet the service’s playback conditions consistently.
- Region: The same title and format may not be offered in every market.
If your priority is reliable access to a particular series rather than maximum resolution, catalog verification should come before display upgrades or plan changes.

Sony announced Live TV on PS5 in the United States on August 31, 2026. The service provides free, ad-supported live channels and on-demand programming, including anime. It is an additional discovery route for eligible US viewers, not a replacement for checking an on-demand subscription catalog.
Availability and programming can vary by local television market and can change over time. A channel or anime episode visible to one US household may not appear for another. Check Live TV directly on your PS5 to see what your market currently offers, and do not assume that a free channel will carry a complete season or remain on the same schedule.
Live TV is different from installing Crunchyroll, Netflix or Hulu: it is Sony’s ad-supported channel and on-demand offering, while the other three are subscription services with their own apps, rights and account terms.

Sony’s announced anime discovery space
On October 7, 2026, Sony announced plans for a dedicated anime space in the PS5 home experience. The announcement describes a place intended to bring anime discovery together with anime-inspired games and easier access to Crunchyroll. It is a future feature announcement, not evidence that the space was already available on every PS5 as of October 13, 2026.
Do not delay a subscription decision or assume a new home-screen section will change a service’s catalog. Until Sony provides rollout details for your console and region, use the existing Media area and each service’s app.
Troubleshooting PS5 anime streaming
The app cannot be found
- Check that you are searching in the PS5 Media area rather than the game store.
- Confirm that the service operates in the country associated with your PlayStation account.
- Install pending PS5 system updates and search again.
- Check the service’s current device-support page, because app availability and requirements can change.
The app installs but will not play a title
- Search the exact title and season again; the service may carry only part of a series.
- Check the audio and subtitle options listed on the title page.
- Verify that your account is signed in to the intended regional service.
- For Netflix 4K, confirm the plan, title, device and connection requirements rather than assuming the console alone enables 4K.
You expected offline Hulu playback
Move the download plan to a supported mobile device if your Hulu plan is eligible. Hulu downloads are not available on PS5 or other living-room devices, so reinstalling the PS5 app cannot enable that feature.

Playback quality changes during viewing
First separate a catalog or title limitation from a connection limitation. If only one title lacks the desired format, the title may not be offered in that format. If several services fluctuate, check the PS5 network connection and your display setup. Netflix’s 4K ceiling remains conditional even when the connection is stable.

- Start with the must-watch list. Identify every anime, season, film and language option that matters.
- Search locally. Check Crunchyroll, Netflix and Hulu from the country and account you will use.
- Match the service to your household. Pick Crunchyroll for anime-first use; consider Netflix or Hulu when general entertainment carries equal weight.
- Check playback needs. If 4K matters, verify Netflix’s plan, title, device and connection conditions. If offline Hulu viewing matters, PS5 cannot provide it.
- Use free discovery where available. US viewers can inspect Live TV on PS5 for changing ad-supported anime programming.
- Recheck before renewal. Rights, episodes, plans and app requirements can change, so a title that justified a subscription today may not be available later.
For most anime-focused PS5 owners, that process leads to Crunchyroll first. Netflix is the strongest alternative when the same subscription must cover broad television and film viewing, while Hulu is most compelling for households already centered on its current-season television, originals and movies. The title search—not a permanent service ranking—should make the final choice.
