You do not need a smartwatch to enforce a phone curfew. Use the phone’s own scheduled controls: Screen Time Downtime on an iPhone, Family Link or supported Android parental controls for a child’s device, and Bedtime mode on an adult’s Android phone when quiet notifications—not a hard lock—is enough. Pair the setting with a household cutoff, charge phones outside bedrooms when practical, and use a separate alarm clock if leaving the phone behind would otherwise keep it in bed.

Choose the right kind of curfew

A “curfew” can mean two different things: preventing access to distracting apps and games, or simply making the phone quiet and less visually stimulating. That distinction matters. Some settings block most apps during a schedule while preserving calls and approved apps; others only enable Do Not Disturb and grayscale.

Option Does it block access? Who manages it? Requirements and limits What can remain available?
iPhone Screen Time Downtime Scheduled Downtime blocks apps and notifications except for allowed contacts and apps. Configured on the iPhone; a parent can manage a child’s device through Family Sharing. Menu names and family-account details vary by iOS version and setup. Calls and selected apps can be allowed.
Google Family Link Supports daily limits, scheduled Downtime and School Time, plus app limits or blocks. Parent-managed for a supervised child or teen account. Availability depends on the child’s account, device and region. Parents can decide which apps and contacts remain usable.
Android on-device Parental Controls Can provide scheduled downtime and app limits on supported devices. Configured on the device, with features varying by Android release. Google’s June 16, 2026 announcement describes expansion to devices updating to Android 17; not every Android phone has the same controls. Depends on the controls and exceptions offered by that device.
Android Digital Wellbeing Bedtime mode No. It quiets interruptions and can turn the display grayscale, but it is not necessarily a lockout. Configured by the phone’s user. Requires a compatible Android version and the Digital Wellbeing feature. The phone remains accessible unless another limit is also enabled.

Set a curfew on an iPhone with Screen Time

Apple’s Screen Time Downtime is the built-in choice when you want a scheduled iPhone restriction without buying another device. Apple describes Downtime as a period when apps and notifications are blocked, while calls and selected apps can still be available. See Apple’s current instructions for managing a child’s device at Apple Support.

For your own iPhone

  1. Open Settings and select Screen Time.
  2. Turn on Screen Time if it is not already enabled, then open Downtime.
  3. Choose Turn On Downtime Until Tomorrow for an immediate test, or schedule recurring start and end times for the nightly curfew.
  4. Review Always Allowed and keep only the apps and contacts that must work during the restricted period, such as Phone, emergency contacts or a medication reminder.
  5. Set a Screen Time passcode if you need the schedule to be difficult to override. Keep the passcode separate from the device-unlock code if another household member is responsible for enforcing the rule.
  6. Test the schedule before relying on it. Confirm that a permitted call works, a restricted app is unavailable and notifications behave as expected.

Apple changes labels and account flows between iOS releases. If a menu is missing, check the iPhone’s iOS version and Apple’s support page rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.

For a child’s iPhone or iPad

A parent can use Family Sharing and Screen Time to manage a child’s device. The organizer should first confirm that the child is in the correct Apple family group, then open the child’s Screen Time settings from the parent’s device. Set Downtime, review Always Allowed and protect the settings with a passcode the child does not know. A child who can change the clock, sign out of the managed account or use an unmanaged device may be able to bypass the intended boundary, so review the family-account setup as well as the schedule.

Before enforcing the first night, agree on the exceptions. A child may need Phone for an emergency, a transportation contact, an accessibility tool or a health-related app. Leaving every social or game app in Always Allowed defeats the purpose, but removing all communication can create a safety problem. Make one test call and open each approved app during Downtime so there is no surprise when the schedule begins.

Set a child or teen curfew on Android with Family Link

Google Family Link is intended for a parent supervising a child or teen’s Google account. It supports daily device limits, scheduled Downtime and School Time, and limits or blocks for individual apps. It is usually the strongest no-purchase option when a parent—not the child—needs to control the schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Basic setup

  1. Install or open the Family Link app on the parent’s phone and sign in with the supervising Google account.
  2. Link the child’s Google account and confirm that the child’s Android phone is the supervised device. Follow Google’s prompts for the account type and consent requirements shown in your region.
  3. Open the child’s profile, choose the device controls for Screen time, and set a daily limit.
  4. Open the schedule for Downtime and enter the recurring start and end times. Use School Time separately if school-day restrictions need different hours.
  5. Review app controls. Set individual limits or block high-distraction apps while leaving communication, accessibility and safety tools available.
  6. Ask the child to test an allowed call and a restricted app. The parent should know how to grant temporary bonus time when an exception is genuinely needed.

Family Link features depend on the child’s account, device and current Google software. Google’s product page is the authoritative place to confirm eligibility before changing a family’s routine.

Think of the settings as separate layers. A daily limit controls total use, Downtime defines a recurring no-use window, School Time can cover class hours, and an app limit targets a particular source of distraction. A child who needs the phone for a morning bus call might have communication available during Downtime while games and video remain blocked. Check the actual device after setup; a parent may be managing the wrong handset if an old phone is still listed in the account.

Check Android’s built-in parental controls

Some newer Android phones include on-device Parental Controls that can schedule downtime and set app limits without a separately managed Family Link workflow. Google’s June 16, 2026 announcement says the expanded controls are rolling to Android devices updating to Android 17: Google’s Android announcement. That does not mean every Android phone has the same controls today.

Find out what your phone supports

  1. Open Settings and search for Parental controls, Digital Wellbeing or Screen time.
  2. Open the matching result and read which Android version, account type and device-management options are listed.
  3. If scheduled downtime and app limits are available, set the recurring period, choose exceptions and protect changes with the offered parent or PIN control.
  4. Install system updates only through the phone’s normal update screen, then check the controls again. A feature announced for Android 17 may still depend on the manufacturer, rollout stage or region.

If the search returns no parental-control screen, use Family Link for a supervised child account or use Digital Wellbeing for a softer personal boundary. Do not assume that an Android phone has an iPhone-equivalent lockout merely because it has a “screen time” menu.

On-device controls are configured on that phone, so they are useful when a family does not want a separate parent app, but they may offer fewer remote-management options than Family Link. Read the exception list carefully: one model may permit calls or selected apps while another exposes only app timers. The Android release, manufacturer interface, account type and regional rollout all affect what appears.

Use Digital Wellbeing Bedtime mode for a personal Android wind-down

Google’s Bedtime mode guidance describes a scheduled way to make an Android phone darker and quieter. Depending on the device, it can enable Do Not Disturb and grayscale. This reduces interruptions and the visual appeal of the screen, but it does not necessarily prevent you from opening the phone.

  1. Open Settings and select Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
  2. Open Bedtime mode (some manufacturers place it under a similarly named sleep or bedtime section).
  3. Set the start and end times for the nightly schedule.
  4. Choose options such as Do Not Disturb, grayscale or a dimmed display, then verify which people and apps can interrupt you.
  5. If you still bypass the schedule, add app timers or supported device limits, or move the phone out of the bedroom. Bedtime mode alone is a nudge, not a guaranteed lock.

Bedtime mode is therefore best for an adult who can follow a self-imposed boundary and mainly wants fewer alerts. It is not the right description for a parent promising a child that the device will be inaccessible. If you need a real barrier, combine it with app or device limits where supported, or place the phone in a shared charging location.

Build a no-purchase routine that the software can enforce

A timer works better when the household agrees on what happens before and after it. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends creating a family media plan that fits the family’s routines and revisiting it as children mature. Its HealthyChildren.org guidance says: “Set screen-free zones (such as the dinner table, during homework and before bed) to strengthen family face-to-face connections, promote learning and improve sleep.” Read the current guidance at HealthyChildren.org.

Set a specific cutoff and a preparation window

  • Choose a realistic time rather than a rule nobody follows. For example, start a 30-minute wind-down before the actual lights-out time.
  • Define what counts as an exception: emergency calls, on-call work, a medical alert or a scheduled early departure.
  • Use the same charging location every night. A hall shelf or kitchen counter makes the boundary visible and avoids arguments about whether the phone is “still being used.”
  • Revisit the plan when school schedules, work shifts or a child’s age changes.

The AAP’s 2016 policy statement recommends avoiding screens for an hour before bedtime and not sleeping with devices in bedrooms; it gives a sleep target of 8–12 hours depending on a child’s age. Its teen guidance gives 8–10 hours for adolescents and recommends Do Not Disturb when a phone must remain in the room. These are health recommendations, not evidence that one particular timer guarantees better sleep. See the AAP policy statement and the teen sleep guidance.

A practical routine has three checkpoints: finish urgent messages before the preparation window, enable the scheduled control, and put the phone in its overnight location. If the cutoff is 10 p.m., a 9:30 p.m. reminder gives time to answer a family member or set out information needed in the morning. Repeating the same sequence reduces nightly negotiation and makes a software schedule easier to follow.

When the phone is also your alarm

Needing an alarm is the most common reason people keep a phone beside the bed. The cleanest solution is a basic digital alarm clock and a charging location outside the bedroom. The AAP’s teen guidance specifically suggests trying a separate alarm clock when the phone is being used as an alarm.

If buying an alarm is not practical, keep the phone in the room but place it across the room, enable Do Not Disturb, and allow only emergency contacts or repeated callers. This is a fallback: it removes casual scrolling only if you can resist walking over to the phone, and it does not replace a true device lock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before moving the phone away, check that the separate clock is audible from the bed and that everyone knows how to silence it. If the phone must provide a medical alert or an on-call notification, keep those specific interruptions enabled and explain why they are exceptions. Do not market a particular alarm model as tested or required; the supported recommendation is the category of a separate digital alarm clock.

Cost, privacy and account requirements

The curfew features described here are phone or account controls, so they do not require a smartwatch or another wearable. The main requirements are a compatible operating-system version, the correct Apple or Google family account, and enough time to test exceptions. A separate alarm clock is optional hardware only for people who want the phone out of the bedroom.

Parent management also means deciding who knows the passcode and how exceptions are approved. On iPhone, a Screen Time passcode protects the schedule; on Android, Family Link uses the supervising parent account, while on-device controls may use a parent PIN. Keep those credentials private, and review the account list after a phone is replaced or handed down. A forgotten passcode or an unsupervised profile can turn a strict schedule into a suggestion.

Troubleshoot a curfew that is not working

“The child can extend the time”

Check who owns the managing account and whether the child’s device is actually supervised. Recheck the parent passcode, account link and device list in Family Link or Screen Time. A schedule configured only on the child’s phone is easier to change than one managed from the parent account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Important calls are blocked”

Review Always Allowed on iPhone, or the permitted contacts and app exceptions in Android’s controls. Make one test call during the restricted period. Emergency calling behavior can vary by device and region, so do not rely on a curfew setting as a substitute for knowing the phone’s emergency-call function.

“Android Bedtime mode does nothing”

Bedtime mode is designed to quiet and simplify the phone, not necessarily lock it. Add app or device limits where your model supports them, switch to Family Link for a supervised child account, or use the environmental step of charging outside the bedroom.

“The schedule starts at the wrong time”

Verify the phone’s date, time zone and automatic time setting. Check whether the schedule crosses midnight—for example, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.—and whether a second profile, work account or manufacturer sleep mode has its own schedule.

“The phone still feels too tempting”

Grayscale and Do Not Disturb reduce visual and notification cues but cannot stop a determined user from opening an unrestricted app. Add app-specific limits, remove especially distracting apps from the overnight home screen, or move the device to the shared charging location. A physical change in where the phone sleeps can be more reliable than adding another notification setting.

Which approach fits your situation?

  • Parent managing an iPhone: use Screen Time Downtime with Family Sharing and a passcode.
  • Parent managing an Android phone: start with Family Link; inspect on-device Parental Controls if the phone supports them.
  • Adult managing their own Android phone: use Bedtime mode for quiet and grayscale, then add app limits or a bedroom charging rule if you continue to override it.
  • Anyone who scrolls in bed because the phone is the alarm: move the phone out of reach and use a separate digital alarm clock, or use Do Not Disturb as the fallback.
  • Someone who needs overnight availability: keep only emergency contacts, repeated callers, accessibility tools or required work alerts as exceptions, and test them at the scheduled time.

No single setting is best for every household. Compare each option by whether it blocks access or merely quiets the phone, whether a parent can manage it remotely, whether the device and account qualify, and which calls or apps remain available. Start with the least complicated control that meets the safety need, then add a charging-location rule when software alone is easy to ignore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I set a phone curfew without buying a smartwatch?

Yes. Use Screen Time Downtime on an iPhone, Family Link or supported Android parental controls for a supervised child device, or Bedtime mode for a softer personal Android boundary. A smartwatch is not required.

Is Android Bedtime mode a complete lockout?

No. It can schedule Do Not Disturb, grayscale and a darker display, but the phone may remain accessible. Use app or device limits, Family Link or a phone-outside-the-bedroom rule for a stricter boundary.

How do I keep emergency calls available during downtime?

Review iPhone Always Allowed settings or Android contact and app exceptions, then place a test call during the restricted period. Emergency behavior varies by device and region, so learn the phone’s emergency-call function separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my child uses the phone as an alarm?

The AAP teen guidance suggests trying a separate alarm clock. If that is not practical, place the phone across the room, enable Do Not Disturb and allow only essential contacts.

Why does Family Link show different controls from another Android phone?

Family Link features depend on the child’s account, device, software version and region. On-device Android parental controls also vary by manufacturer and Android release, so check the phone’s current Settings and Google’s eligibility information.

How much sleep should children and teens get?

The AAP policy statement gives 8–12 hours depending on age for children and adolescents; its teen guidance gives 8–10 hours for adolescents. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular timer will improve sleep.

The Bottom Line

Set the curfew on the phone you already own. Choose iPhone Screen Time Downtime for a scheduled restriction, Family Link for parent-managed Android devices, or Android Bedtime mode when quiet and grayscale are enough. Protect exceptions with a passcode, test calls and approved apps, and charge the phone outside the bedroom when possible. If the phone is the alarm, a basic digital alarm clock is the practical optional purchase; a smartwatch is not.
