The best second use for an old smartphone is a simple job that matches its condition: an offline media player, alarm, ebook reader or limited Wi‑Fi reference screen. If it cannot hold a charge, run the required software or receive adequate security updates, do not force it into a sensitive or always-connected role. A working handset that is not useful to you may be better donated through a reputable reuse organization; a damaged or unsuitable one should go to electronics recycling.
Start with a five-minute suitability check
Before choosing a purpose, establish what the phone can reliably do. These checks are more useful than its age alone.
- Power and battery: Charge it fully, unplug it and observe whether it stays on for the length of the task you have in mind. A battery that swells, becomes unusually hot or drains rapidly is a safety reason to stop using the phone and seek an appropriate battery or electronics disposal route.
- Screen and controls: Confirm that the display, touch input, volume buttons, speaker and charging port work. A cracked screen may be acceptable for a stationary timer but not for reading or donation.
- Storage: Check free space before downloading music, podcasts, video or documents. The usable capacity is lower than the number printed on the box because the operating system occupies some storage.
- Software support: Find the model and operating-system version in Settings, then check the manufacturer’s current support information. An old system may no longer receive security updates or support the app you want. Do not use an unsupported phone for banking, password management, work accounts or other sensitive services.
- Connectivity: Test Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and the headphone or speaker connection if the intended task needs them. A SIM is not required for local alarms or offline playback.
- Account status: If the phone is locked to another person’s account, do not attempt to bypass that protection. The owner must remove the account before the device can be transferred.
Use the result to choose the least demanding job. A phone that works only while plugged in can still be a stationary clock, but it is a poor travel media player. A phone with plenty of battery but obsolete software is a reasonable offline reader, not a trustworthy general-purpose browsing device.

Use it as an offline media player
This is often the most useful second life for a phone that still has working storage, speakers or Bluetooth but no longer receives current apps. Download music, podcasts, audiobooks or videos while connected to your normal Wi‑Fi, then switch off mobile data or leave the device without a SIM. Playback itself does not require a mobile plan.

Set it up
- Review free storage and remove old photos, messages and downloads that you no longer need.
- Connect to a trusted Wi‑Fi network and download only the media you are licensed to use. Check each app’s offline-download rules; some services require periodic online sign-in.
- Play a complete track or video with Wi‑Fi disabled. Confirm that sound, subtitles, screen orientation and Bluetooth or wired audio behave as expected.
- Turn off notifications and automatic downloads that are not needed. If the operating system is no longer supported, avoid signing into email, payment or other sensitive accounts solely to make playback easier.
- Keep the phone charged in a ventilated place. Do not cover it with bedding or leave a visibly swollen battery charging unattended.
Storage and battery are the limiting factors. Long video files consume space quickly, while high screen brightness shortens playback time. If the phone cannot complete a normal listening or viewing session, use it as a plugged-in bedside player or choose another disposition instead.
Make a dependable alarm clock or timer
A local alarm is a good fit for a phone that is too old for modern apps but still has a working clock, speaker and power connection. The built-in clock normally runs without a SIM or internet connection.
Setup and test procedure
- Place the phone on a stable, non-flammable surface where the speaker is not blocked.
- Connect a known-good charger and make sure the cable cannot be pulled across a walkway or trapped under the phone.
- Set one alarm for a few minutes ahead and another for the time you actually need. Confirm the volume, vibration and chosen sound.
- Lock the screen and let the test alarm ring. Check that it still works with Wi‑Fi and mobile data disabled.
- After a power interruption, restart the phone and test again. Some devices lose alarms or fail to boot when a degraded battery is empty.
Do not treat an old phone as your only safety-critical alarm until it has passed repeated tests. For medication, accessibility or emergency routines, keep an independent backup if a missed alarm would create a serious risk.

Turn it into an ebook or document reader
A bright, intact screen can remain useful even when the phone is no longer suitable for sensitive online work. Load documents locally or use a reading application that still supports the phone’s operating system. Manuals, recipes, travel documents, public-domain books and saved reference material work well because they do not require a continuous connection.

Prepare files without creating a security problem
- Check the file types you need, such as PDF or EPUB, against the capabilities of the built-in viewer or a currently supported reading app.
- Transfer files over a trusted connection, then open several pages to test fonts, images, links and page rotation.
- Disable cloud synchronization if the old phone cannot receive adequate security updates. Keep only copies that you are comfortable storing locally.
- Set a comfortable brightness and sleep timeout. Excessive brightness and a permanently awake screen can overheat the device and exhaust its battery.
- Keep a copy of important documents elsewhere. The old phone should be a convenient reader, not the only location of an irreplaceable file.
If the preferred app is unavailable for the installed operating system, do not install an untrusted package simply to keep the phone in service. Use a standard file format with a built-in viewer, update the device if an official update exists, or choose offline media and recycling instead.
Use Wi‑Fi-only browsing carefully
An old smartphone can serve as a kitchen reference screen, a display for locally stored instructions or a limited browser for non-sensitive information. This is the reuse idea with the greatest security exposure because it connects the device to a network and websites.
Keep the role narrow
- Use a separate Wi‑Fi network or guest network when practical, especially if the phone no longer receives security updates.
- Prefer public information and local files. Avoid banking, shopping, password resets, work accounts, health records and any service that treats the phone as a trusted device.
- Do not rely on an obsolete browser for entering credentials merely because a page loads.
- Install only updates offered through the phone’s normal settings or the manufacturer’s official store. If no security updates are available, reduce the phone’s exposure rather than trying to make it an always-on smart-home controller.
- Turn off Wi‑Fi when the phone is not in use and remove saved networks that you no longer need.
Support status is model- and region-specific. Check the manufacturer’s published information before deciding that an old phone is safe for any connected service. A phone that can display a recipe offline may still be unsuitable for browsing the account that stores that recipe.

If the handset powers on, holds a reasonable charge and is fit for another person’s needs, a local digital-inclusion or device-reuse organization may be a better destination than storage. Ask what models, accessories, network locks and conditions the organization accepts. Availability and eligibility differ by country and locality.

The UK Government’s IT Reuse for Good Charter, updated 2 October 2026, is a policy example for organizations rather than a universal donation service. It emphasizes secure wiping and devices that are fit for purpose. Use that standard as a question to ask any recipient: Will the device be securely erased, tested and given to someone who can use it safely?
Information to give the recipient
- Exact model, storage capacity and operating-system version.
- Whether the device is carrier-locked, eSIM-equipped or compatible with a particular network.
- Known faults, battery limitations, missing accessories and whether the charger is included.
- The date you last confirmed that it could boot, charge and connect to Wi‑Fi.
Do not donate a phone with an account lock, an active device-management profile or personal data still on it. Complete the handover checklist below before the device leaves your control.
Recycle it when reuse is not suitable
Recycling is the sensible endpoint when the battery is unsafe, the phone is unreliable, the software is too old for the proposed task or no legitimate recipient can use it. The US Federal Trade Commission advises checking a manufacturer, wireless provider or local electronics store and confirming local acceptance rules. Collection programs differ on batteries, damaged devices and whether they accept phones from other regions.
Do not place a phone with a swollen or damaged lithium battery in ordinary household rubbish. Keep it away from heat and follow the instructions of the local electronics or hazardous-battery program. Remove a reusable memory card before recycling, and destroy a SIM that will not be reused as advised by the FTC.

Protect your information before any transfer, sale or recycling
Erasing the screen or deleting a few files is not enough. Use this order so that account recovery and authenticator access are not lost before the phone is reset.
- Back up what you need. Copy photos, contacts, messages, documents and any locally stored media. Open the backup or sign in on another device to confirm that it is usable. The FTC’s July 2022 guidance recommends backing up before getting rid of a phone.
- Confirm access to important accounts. Make sure you know the password and recovery method for email, cloud storage, banking and other services before removing the old phone.
- Move authenticator access. Transfer or reactivate authenticator apps on the replacement device. The FTC warns that an authenticator may need reactivation, and the FTC’s January 2025 upgrade guidance repeats the need to move this access before disposal.
- Update phone-number recovery. Change accounts that use the old number for sign-in, verification or password recovery. Do this while you can still receive any required confirmation.
- Unlink trusted-device access. Remove the phone from account security pages and trusted-device lists. Apple’s transfer guidance specifically tells iPhone and iPad owners to remove the device from their account before handing it over.
- Remove physical cards. Take out the SIM and any removable SD card. If the SIM will not be reused, follow the FTC’s advice to destroy it rather than leaving it in the phone.
- Handle eSIM ownership. On an iPhone with an eSIM, follow the platform and carrier choice about erasing the eSIM profile when transferring ownership. Do not assume that a factory reset alone answers the carrier’s question.
- Sign out where the platform requires it. Disable device-finding and sign out of services that keep the handset registered. The exact labels vary by operating-system version; use the current manufacturer instructions for the model.
- Run the built-in erase. Use the phone’s normal factory-reset or erase-all-content function. On current iPhone instructions, the path is Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings; Android and other platforms use different labels and menus.
- Stop at the setup screen. After the reset, do not sign back in. The recipient should see the initial setup process rather than your account or home screen.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre says, “The most convenient way of securely erasing devices is to use the built in Restore, Factory Reset, or Erase all content and settings feature of your device.” It also cautions that a normal reset does not guarantee complete removal against every determined expert in every circumstance. If the phone was organization-managed or held highly sensitive information, follow the organization’s approved sanitization standard instead of relying only on a consumer reset.
Fix the common problems that make reuse fail
The battery will not last
Lower brightness, remove unused downloads and use a reputable charger, but do not mask swelling, heat or sudden shutdowns. A battery replacement may cost more than the phone is worth and should be performed by a qualified service. If the battery is unsafe, recycle the phone.

Check the operating-system requirement on the app’s official listing and the manufacturer’s support status. Do not sideload random installers to bypass the requirement. Choose a local file, a built-in app or a less connected role.

There is not enough storage
Delete temporary downloads, move personal files to a verified backup and use lower-resolution media where appropriate. A removable card can help only if the phone supports it and the app can use that storage; never assume expansion is available.
The phone is locked to an account or network
Ask the previous owner or carrier to remove the lock through the normal account process. A reset does not remove an activation lock, and a third-party bypass can leave the device unusable or compromise privacy.
The alarm or offline file did not work
Repeat the test with connectivity disabled and after a restart. Check volume, Do Not Disturb settings, file compatibility, available storage and whether the phone lost power. If reliability cannot be demonstrated, select a simpler use or retire the device.
Choose the least risky useful outcome
Keep the phone when it can perform a simple, non-sensitive task reliably with little maintenance. Donate it when it is functional, transferable and genuinely fit for another person. Recycle it when safety, support, privacy or reliability problems outweigh the benefit. The right answer is not the most elaborate project; it is the smallest useful role the phone can perform without exposing your accounts or creating a safety problem.
