Remove the material causing the odor first, then ventilate, and use filtration only for what remains. Grease films create cooking smells, biological residue creates pet odors, and sewage odor signals contamination that may require removal of damaged materials. Air fresheners merely add another scent and do not solve any of these sources.
The safest method depends on the source, the surface (hard or porous), how deeply the odor has penetrated, and whether contaminated water is involved. The steps below separate those cases and include ventilation, contact-time, material-safety and escalation guidance.
Use a source-first odor-removal sequence
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ranks source control as the most effective indoor-air strategy. Outdoor-air ventilation comes next; filtration and air cleaning supplement both rather than replacing them. Use this order:
- Identify and stop the source. Remove grease, urine, feces, vomit, or sewage-contaminated material.
- Clean the affected surface. Select a product whose label covers that material, dilution and soil.
- Allow the required contact time, then rinse, blot or extract as directed.
- Ventilate when outdoor conditions make it safe. Use an exhaust fan or open windows and doors.
- Run activated-carbon filtration for residual gases. A purifier cannot remove grease or contaminated padding that remains in the room.
| Odor source | Primary action | Where it works | What filtration can and cannot do | When to escalate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cooking | Capture exhaust at the range and remove grease residue | Range hood, filters, backsplash, cabinets, walls and nearby hard surfaces | Activated carbon may reduce residual vapors; it does not clean grease | Persistent odor after degreasing may indicate grease in porous finishes or ductwork |
| Pet urine, feces or vomit | Remove solids and soil, then use a surface-compatible cleaner; use an enzyme product for penetrated odor | Hard surfaces and, with the correct label, carpet, upholstery, bedding and other porous items | Carbon may help room air temporarily; it cannot reach urine in padding or subfloor | Dispose of saturated porous items that still smell after proper treatment |
| Sewage or contaminated water | Stop the backup, isolate the area, remove affected porous materials and follow remediation procedures | Only materials that can be safely cleaned and dried; hidden cavities may need professional assessment | Carbon is only supplemental after contamination control | Extensive backup, hidden moisture, HVAC contamination or unsafe conditions |
How to remove cooking smells from a house
Capture smoke, steam and odor at the range
Turn on an outdoor-vented range hood before or as cooking starts. Keep it running afterward until steam and odor clear. EPA guidance, citing ASHRAE and the Home Ventilation Institute, gives 100 cubic feet per minute (cfm) as a typical range-hood recommendation (2014 guidance). A hood that only recirculates air cannot exhaust combustion products or moisture outdoors; its filter is a supplement, not a substitute for ducted exhaust.

Degrease every nearby film
Odor often persists because a thin layer of cooking oil remains on surfaces. Clean the hood filter, backsplash, cabinet faces, walls, light fixtures and other hard surfaces near the range. Choose a cleaner labeled for the material—paint, stainless steel, stone, laminate and finished wood have different tolerances. Follow the label’s dilution and contact-time directions, then rinse or wipe as directed. Never combine products.
For a removable metal filter, use the cleaning method specified by the hood manufacturer. Replace a filter that is damaged or cannot be cleaned; a loaded filter restricts airflow and retains odor.
Ventilate with outdoor air only when appropriate
If outdoor air quality, temperature and weather permit, open windows or doors on opposite sides of the home to create cross-ventilation. Use a window or exhaust fan to move air outdoors, not toward another room. Close openings when outdoor smoke, high pollution, extreme humidity or unsafe weather would make indoor conditions worse.
Treat residual odor gases
After the grease source is gone and the room has been ventilated, a portable air cleaner containing activated carbon can reduce remaining gaseous cooking compounds. Run it near the kitchen at a higher fan speed while occupied if the noise is acceptable, then continue for several air changes. Carbon does not remove residue from cabinets, walls, filters or fabrics, so using a purifier before cleaning only masks the problem temporarily.
If the smell returns after cleaning
- Inspect the hood filter, fan and duct termination for grease buildup or poor airflow.
- Check adjacent rooms, cabinet tops and the floor under the range for overlooked film.
- Wash washable curtains, rugs and upholstery that absorbed vapor.
- If odor is strongest when the hood runs, have the duct and backdrafting condition evaluated rather than adding fragrance.
How to remove dog or cat urine, feces and vomit odors
Remove the soil before deodorizing
- Keep children and pets away from the area.
- Pick up feces and other solids with disposable tools. Blot liquid urine or vomit; do not grind it deeper into carpet or upholstery.
- Wash or wipe the affected area with a product labeled for that surface and soil.
- Apply a deodorizer only after cleaning. Follow the label for dilution, coverage, contact time, blotting and drying.
One EPA-registered deodorizer label (Lonzagard RCS-256 Plus, 2024) gives pet-odor examples of 2–3 fluid ounces per gallon of water and a 10-minute contact time. Those figures apply to that label’s listed uses, not to every cleaner. Your product’s label controls.
Use an enzymatic cleaner when odor has penetrated porous material
Carpet backing, padding, upholstery, mattresses, bedding and unfinished wood can hold urine compounds below the visible surface. Choose an enzymatic pet-odor product whose label specifically lists the material. Apply enough to reach the contaminated depth without flooding areas that cannot be dried, and observe the full contact time before blotting or extraction.

Test a hidden spot first for colorfastness. Do not assume a product safe for carpet is safe for silk, leather, wool, wood finish or a mattress. Dry the item completely; trapped moisture can create a new odor and support microbial growth.
Use airflow and sunlight as optional aids
When the item and weather allow, sunlight and moving air can help after cleaning. Place washable bedding or small removable items outdoors only if the manufacturer permits it and rain, pollen, pollution and security are not concerns. These steps support cleaning; they do not replace removal of urine or feces.
Know when replacement is more practical
If a porous item was saturated for a long time and still smells after a correctly applied, surface-compatible treatment and complete drying, disposal may be more effective than repeated applications. Carpet padding and particleboard subflooring are especially difficult to restore once urine has reached them. Replace only the affected component when feasible, and correct the reason for repeated accidents before installing new materials.
Do not use ozone generators for pet odor
Extension guidance reports EPA and Extension warnings that ozone can damage materials and is not effective against uric-acid-based odors. Ozone also introduces an inhalation hazard. It is not a safe substitute for removing the contaminated soil.
How to get rid of sewage smell safely
Treat sewage odor as a contamination signal
Sewage odor means contaminated water or material may be present. Stop the leak, blocked drain or backup if you can do so without entering contaminated water. Keep people and pets out of the area. Exposure can be associated with temporary headache, nausea and eye, nose or throat irritation; leave and seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or persistent.
Remove contaminated porous materials
Porous items such as carpet pad, upholstered furniture, drywall, insulation and some particleboard may not be salvageable after sewage contact. Remove them in accordance with local disposal requirements and a remediation plan. Do not carry contaminated materials through clean living areas without containing them.

Clean salvageable surfaces according to the material and label
Hard, nonporous surfaces may be cleaned and disinfected when they can be fully reached, rinsed and dried. Follow the product label for dilution, application method and contact time. An EPA-registered label cited for sewage backup and water damage gives an example of 1–2 fluid ounces per gallon with a 10-minute contact time; this is an example for that specific label, not a universal sewage-cleanup formula.
Extract standing water, clean cracks and seams, and dry the assembly—not just the visible face. Hidden moisture behind walls, under flooring or inside cabinets can keep odor returning.
Ventilate without spreading contamination
Use open windows or exhaust fans only when outdoor conditions are safe and the airflow will not move contaminated air into clean rooms. Follow all product ventilation requirements. Do not run a central HVAC system that could distribute contaminated air through the house until it has been assessed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEscalate when the scope exceeds household cleaning
Use a qualified water-damage or sewage-remediation provider for an extensive backup, contaminated HVAC system, hidden moisture, structural damage, or any situation in which you cannot safely isolate, remove and dry materials. Professional remediation is a practical response to the contamination scope; it is not necessary for every isolated, promptly cleaned incident.
Compare methods by source, surface and risk
The same treatment can be sensible for a grease film and inappropriate for sewage. Before choosing a product or appliance, ask seven questions: Does it remove the source or only treat room air? Is the affected material hard or porous? Is the soil food, pet waste or sewage? What contact time and ventilation are required? Could the treatment damage the finish? Will anything need disposal or professional remediation? What consumables will recur?
| Method | Best use | Main limitation | Ongoing cost or effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Degreaser and surface washing | Cooking residue on washable hard surfaces | Cannot reach grease inside porous finishes or hidden duct deposits | Cleaner, water, cloths and periodic hood-filter cleaning |
| Enzymatic pet cleaner | Urine or other pet soil that has entered carpet, upholstery or bedding | Must be labeled for the material and dried thoroughly; severe saturation may require removal | Product use, extraction or laundering, and possible replacement of padding |
| Ventilation | Clearing airborne moisture and residual gases after source control | Unsafe or counterproductive during outdoor smoke, pollution or contaminated-air conditions | Fan electricity, noise and weather-dependent use |
| Activated-carbon purifier | Residual gaseous odor after cleaning and ventilation | Does not remove grease, urine in padding or sewage-contaminated building materials | Purchase, electricity, noise and replacement carbon filters |
| Professional remediation | Extensive sewage, hidden moisture, structural damage or contaminated HVAC | Requires local provider verification and is more involved than an isolated cleanup | Service pricing, disposal and possible rebuilding costs vary by scope and location |
Do not choose a method because it makes the room smell better fastest. A fragrance or thin carbon pad can hide an odor while the source remains. The safer comparison is whether the treatment reaches the contaminated material, can be rinsed or dried completely, and has instructions that match the surface.

Does an air purifier remove odors?
Choose activated carbon for gases
For odor gases, look for the words activated carbon or gas-removal filter. EPA explains that a portable cleaner with activated carbon can filter gases. More carbon media generally provides more adsorption capacity; a thin carbon sheet may saturate quickly. Gas filtration has no widely used performance-rating system comparable to particle CADR, so compare the amount and depth of carbon, replacement availability and replacement cost.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use particle CADR to size the room
CADR measures particle-cleaning performance, not odor-gas removal. Select a unit with a particle CADR appropriate for the room, then verify that it also has a substantial, replaceable carbon stage. A high-CADR unit with carbon can address both particles and gases, but the two functions are measured differently.
Plan for operating and replacement costs
- Check the manufacturer’s stated room size and run time assumptions.
- Confirm that replacement carbon filters are sold where you live and note their price and recommended interval.
- Higher fan speeds and longer run times increase the amount of air filtered but also increase noise and electricity use.
- Replace carbon when odor breakthrough occurs or at the stated interval; washing disposable carbon filters usually destroys their adsorption capacity.
Keep the limitation clear
Carbon filtration is supplemental. It cannot remove grease on a hood, urine in carpet padding, or sewage in drywall. If the source remains, the purifier may make the room smell better briefly while contamination continues.

- Never mix cleaning products. In particular, never add bleach to ammonia, acids, vinegar, toilet-bowl products or other chemicals.
- Read the label before use. Use the listed dilution, contact time, personal-protective equipment and ventilation requirements.
- Keep products away from children and pets, and store them in their original containers.
- Do not wipe or bathe pets with disinfectants. Products intended for surfaces are not pet treatments.
- Open windows or use a fan to bring in fresh air when the label and outdoor conditions permit; do not create airflow that spreads sewage contamination.
- Test cleaners on an inconspicuous area, especially on colored textiles, wood, stone and finished surfaces.
Common mistakes that make odors return
- Masking before cleaning: Fragrance, baking products or a purifier cannot compensate for grease, urine, feces or sewage that remains in place.
- Using the wrong label: A disinfectant or degreaser designed for a hard surface may discolor fabric or fail to treat a porous material. Match the product to both the surface and the soil.
- Skipping contact time: Wiping immediately can remove product before it has done the work stated on the label.
- Over-wetting porous goods: Flooding padding, mattresses or particleboard can spread contamination and delay drying.
- Ventilating into clean rooms: Fans should move air outdoors when possible, not from a contaminated space through the rest of the home.
- Ignoring filter maintenance: A clogged hood filter or exhausted carbon cartridge reduces performance and can become another odor source.
Troubleshooting persistent odor
The smell returns within hours
Recheck the source rather than increasing fragrance or purifier speed. Look under appliances, beneath carpet edges, inside cabinet bases, in hood filters and in damp cavities. A returning odor usually indicates remaining soil, moisture or a hidden contaminated material.
The room smells clean but an adjacent room does not
Odor can migrate through open doors, return-air paths and porous furnishings. Close interior doors while cleaning, ventilate outdoors, and inspect the neighboring room’s textiles and wall cavities. Do not simply place a purifier in the room where the odor is noticed if the source is elsewhere.

Odor appears after a plumbing repair
Check for a dry trap, an improperly sealed drain, a failed toilet seal or residual water damage. A sewage smell without visible contamination can still indicate a plumbing or building-envelope problem; have the source inspected before relying on air cleaning.
A practical checklist
- Identify whether the odor is cooking grease, pet waste or sewage.
- Stop the source and restrict access to contaminated areas.
- Choose a cleaner labeled for the exact surface and soil.
- Test colorfastness, follow dilution and observe the full contact time.
- Remove, extract or dispose of porous materials that cannot be restored.
- Ventilate outdoors when weather and air quality make it safe.
- Run an appropriately sized activated-carbon purifier only for residual gases.
- Inspect again after the area is completely dry; persistent odor means the source or hidden moisture still needs attention.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get cooking smells out of the house?
Use an outdoor-vented hood at the start of cooking and keep it running afterward. Clean grease from the filter, backsplash, cabinets, walls and nearby hard surfaces, then ventilate outdoors when air quality and weather permit. Activated carbon can reduce residual gases after those steps, but it cannot remove grease.
How do I remove dog or cat urine smell from carpet?
Blot or remove the soil first, then use an enzymatic pet-odor cleaner whose label specifically covers carpet and padding. Test a hidden area, apply the stated amount, observe the full contact time, and extract or blot as directed. Dry completely; saturated padding or subflooring may need replacement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I get rid of a sewage smell?
Treat it as a contamination signal: stop the backup or leak, keep people and pets away, remove unsalvageable porous materials, and clean and dry salvageable surfaces according to the product label. Ventilate only when safe. Use a qualified remediation provider for extensive backup, hidden moisture, structural damage or contaminated HVAC.
Does an air purifier remove odors?
A purifier with a substantial activated-carbon stage can reduce residual odor gases. Particle CADR does not measure gas removal, and there is no widely used gas-filtration rating. Filtration is supplemental and cannot remove grease, urine in padding or sewage-contaminated drywall.
Can I use bleach or another cleaner to remove these smells?
Use only a product labeled for the specific surface and soil, with its stated dilution, contact time and ventilation requirements. Never mix cleaning products or add bleach to another chemical. Keep products away from children and pets, and never apply surface disinfectants to pets.
Should I use an ozone generator for pet or sewage odor?
No. Extension guidance reports EPA and Extension warnings that ozone can damage materials and does not work well on uric-acid-based odors. It is not a substitute for removing contaminated soil or damaged materials.
Recommended Free Tools
When should I replace an item instead of cleaning it again?
If a porous item was saturated for a long period and still smells after a correctly applied, surface-compatible treatment and complete drying, disposal may be more practical. This commonly applies to affected padding, particleboard and other materials that cannot be fully reached, rinsed and dried.
The Bottom Line
Remove the source, clean with a label-matched product, respect contact time, dry porous materials completely and ventilate safely. Use activated carbon only for residual gases, and escalate sewage contamination or hidden moisture when household cleaning cannot isolate and restore the area.
