When extreme heat and wildfire smoke occur together, protect yourself by reducing both heat load and smoke dose: check your local HeatRisk and AirNow or state air-quality forecast, establish a cool indoor room with clean air, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and use a correctly fitted NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator when outdoor exposure cannot be avoided. Heat and smoke can change quickly, so follow local emergency and evacuation instructions first.

Start with a same-day heat and smoke check

Do not rely on yesterday’s conditions or on temperature alone. Before exercising, commuting, working outside or opening windows, check the local HeatRisk forecast and the AirNow or state air-quality forecast. Smoke can move rapidly, and the coolest part of the day is not always the cleanest. A morning with lower temperatures may still have heavier smoke, while wind can improve or worsen conditions later.

  • HeatRisk: use it to judge how much heat-related strain is expected and whether you need to change your schedule.
  • Air-quality forecast: use AirNow or your state service to see whether fine-particle smoke is expected where you are.
  • Local instructions: give evacuation orders, shelter notices and emergency alerts priority over general advice.

Check again before a planned outdoor period. Conditions can change between the forecast, your departure and your return, so keep a way to receive alerts and know where you can move indoors if either heat or smoke worsens.

Create one cool, clean-air room

Your most useful preparation is a room where you can stay cool while limiting smoke entry. During smoky periods, keep exterior doors and windows closed. Use air conditioning or a heat pump if available, and set the system to recirculate indoor air rather than intentionally drawing smoky outdoor air inside. Close shades or curtains that receive direct sun. A portable air cleaner that does not intentionally generate ozone can further reduce particles in the room.

3M Particulate Disposable Respirator 8210, N95, Pack of 20, NIOSH APPROVED | Two-Strap Cup Style Design, Lightweight, Cushioning Nose Foam
  • NIOSH APPROVED: For at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil based particles
  • COMPATIBLE: With a variety of protective eyewear and hearing protection
  • ADJUSTABLE NOSECLIP: Reduces potential for eyewear fogging and helps provide a custom and secure seal
  • TWO-STRAP DESIGN: With welded dual point attachement that helps provide a secure fit
  • APPLICATIONS: Gringing, sanding, sweeping, bagging, and other dusty operations. Metalworking, chemical processing, construction, and metal processing

Set up the room

  1. Choose the room that can be cooled most effectively and has the fewest open pathways to outside air.
  2. Close its windows and the room’s door when practical. Keep exterior doors shut except for necessary entry and exit.
  3. Run air conditioning or a heat pump and select recirculation when that control is available.
  4. Deploy an ozone-free portable air cleaner sized for the room. Confirm that replacement filters are available and that the unit’s particle-filtration performance and room-coverage claims match the space.
  5. Use shades to block direct sunlight. Fans may improve comfort when the room is not dangerously hot, but do not depend on a fan as the primary cooling method when indoor temperature is above 90°F.

The CDC warns that a fan can raise body temperature when indoor temperature is above 90°F. At that point, move to a cooler location, use air conditioning or another effective cooling option, and seek a cooling center or other safe site if your home cannot be cooled.

Choose an air cleaner carefully

For smoke, compare devices on the features that affect real protection rather than on noise or marketing alone:

  • Particle-filtration performance for fine smoke particles.
  • Room coverage appropriate to the room where you will spend time.
  • Noise that you can tolerate while the unit runs continuously.
  • Replacement-filter availability and cost over the period you expect to use it.
  • Clear confirmation that the device does not intentionally generate ozone.

An air cleaner does not make it safe to ignore evacuation instructions, and it cannot compensate for opening windows during a heavy-smoke period. Keep it running in the occupied room according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Reduce the amount of time you spend outdoors

The EPA’s central wildfire-smoke advice is to limit your time outdoors when smoke is present. The same principle applies to heat: shorten exposure, lower exertion and move activity to a cooler, cleaner period whenever conditions allow.

Reschedule and reduce exertion

  • Postpone exercise, yard work and heavy labor until a period that is both cooler and less smoky.
  • If you must go outside, reduce pace and duration. Take frequent rests in shade or indoors.
  • Wear loose, lightweight clothing that does not trap unnecessary heat.
  • Drink water regularly; an electrolyte beverage can be useful during prolonged sweating or heavy work.
  • Plan a route and destination that let you get indoors quickly if smoke, heat or symptoms increase.

Do not assume that a short outdoor trip is harmless if it includes intense exertion. Breathing harder increases the amount of smoky air you draw into your lungs, while heat and sweating increase dehydration and heat-illness risk.

Use a respirator when outdoor exposure is unavoidable

A respirator can reduce inhalation of fine wildfire-smoke particles, but only when it is the right type and seals to your face. Choose a NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 marked with “NIOSH” and the filter class. A correctly worn NIOSH-approved respirator can reduce exposure by a minimum of 10 times, according to CDC and NIOSH guidance published in 2025.

What to look for

  • Approval: the respirator is marked “NIOSH” and identifies its filter class.
  • Two head straps: head straps are designed to create a seal; ear-loop designs commonly used for other masks are not the same.
  • Correct size: the model must fit your face without gaps.
  • Comfort in heat: choose a design you can keep on safely during the planned task, while recognizing that any tight-fitting respirator can feel hot or make breathing harder.

EPA information from 2025 states that NIOSH-approved N95 respirators are more than 95% efficient at removing wildfire-smoke particles in the PM2.5 size range. The same EPA material cites filter efficiencies of at least 96% for smaller particles and 99.5% for larger particles. These are filter efficiencies, not a promise that every wearer receives the same protection; leaks around the face can substantially reduce the benefit.

Put it on and check the seal

  1. Place the respirator over your nose and mouth and position the lower edge under your chin.
  2. Secure both head straps as directed by the manufacturer; do not leave one strap loose or move straps to the ears.
  3. Press and shape the nose area so it follows the bridge of your nose.
  4. Check for gaps around the nose, cheeks and chin. If air leaks around the edges when you breathe, adjust the straps or try another size or model.
  5. Keep the respirator covering your nose, mouth and chin for the entire smoky task.

Facial hair where the sealing surface contacts the face can prevent a reliable seal. Cloth masks, surgical masks, bandanas and neck gaiters are not designed to filter fine wildfire-smoke particles; AirNow specifically warns that cloth masks will not protect you from wildfire smoke.

Balance respirator protection with heat safety

A respirator is not a reason to remain outside longer. It can make breathing feel harder and increase heat-illness risk, especially during exertion. Before going out, decide where you can remove it safely in cleaner air and where you can cool down.

  • Fluid resistant and disposable
  • Flat-fold design and individual packaging
  • Sculpted top panel allows more room for eyewear
  • Innovative chin tab for ease of positioning, donning, adjustment
  • Embossed top panel helps reduce eyewear fogging

  • Reduce pace or stop if breathing becomes difficult, you feel dizzy, or you begin overheating.
  • Move indoors or to cleaner air and remove the respirator if those symptoms develop.

People with heart or lung disease and people who are pregnant should ask a clinician whether a tight-fitting respirator is appropriate for their circumstances. Do not push through shortness of breath to finish a task.

Plan extra protection for higher-risk people

Heat and smoke can affect some people sooner or more severely. Make a specific plan for children, adults 65 and older, pregnant people, people with asthma, heart disease, lung disease or other chronic conditions, people taking medicines that affect hydration or temperature regulation, and outdoor workers.

Outdoor workers

Coordinate with supervisors before the shift. Ask whether work can be delayed, moved indoors, shortened or reassigned. Build in shaded or indoor rest periods, water access and a way to leave the smoky or overheated area quickly. If a respirator is required or chosen, confirm that the model fits and that breaks can occur in cleaner air.

Recognize heat illness early

Early heat symptoms can include feeling unwell, headache, sweating or unusual thirst, nausea, lightheadedness, fatigue, heat rash and muscle cramps. Treat these as a signal to stop exertion rather than as a minor inconvenience.

  1. Move to a cool place, preferably the cool clean-air room you prepared.
  2. Loosen or remove excess clothing and rest.
  3. Sip water. An electrolyte beverage may help when sweating has been substantial.
  4. Do not resume strenuous activity until you feel fully recovered and conditions are safer.

Get immediate medical attention for fainting or loss of consciousness, severe weakness, extreme fatigue, severe nausea, difficulty speaking, serious breathing trouble or heart symptoms. If someone is confused, collapses or has severe breathing difficulty, call emergency services rather than trying to manage the situation alone.

Recognize smoke-related breathing problems

Smoke exposure can aggravate breathing and heart symptoms, particularly in people with asthma, chronic lung disease or heart disease. Leave the smoky area, move to cleaner air and seek medical help for serious breathing trouble or heart symptoms. A respirator should be removed if it causes breathing difficulty, dizziness or overheating; moving to cleaner air and cooling down are the priorities.

Use a condition-based response plan

Situation What to prioritize Practical response
Heat or smoke is forecast to worsen Preparation before exposure Check HeatRisk and the AirNow or state forecast again, prepare the cool clean-air room, charge communication devices and identify a cooling center or relocation option.
Smoke is present outdoors Lower smoke dose Stay indoors with windows and doors closed, use recirculation and an ozone-free air cleaner, and postpone outdoor exercise or heavy work.
Outdoor exposure cannot be avoided Short duration and lower exertion Choose the cooler, less smoky period, rest frequently, drink water and wear a correctly fitted NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator.
Indoor temperature exceeds 90°F Effective cooling Do not rely on a fan alone; use air conditioning or another cooler location and seek a cooling center if necessary.
Symptoms begin Immediate recovery Stop, move to a cool cleaner-air place, sip water and monitor yourself. Escalate to medical care for severe or emergency symptoms.

Prepare before the next smoke or heat episode

  • Save local HeatRisk, AirNow or state air-quality forecast pages and emergency-alert information.
  • Identify the room that can be cooled and closed off most effectively.
  • Keep an ozone-free portable air cleaner and replacement filters ready if you use one.
  • Keep properly sized N95 or P100 respirators available for unavoidable outdoor exposure.
  • Check that respirator straps, fit and seal work for each intended wearer; facial hair or a poor size can defeat the seal.
  • Stock water and, when appropriate for your household, electrolyte beverages.
  • Write down cooling-center locations, transportation options and contacts for people who may need help.
  • Review medication questions with a clinician before an emergency rather than changing treatment during a heat event.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Opening windows because it is cooler outside: compare the smoke forecast first; the coolest time can also be the smokiest.
  • Using a cloth mask for wildfire smoke: these masks are not designed to filter fine smoke particles.
  • Wearing a respirator with gaps: an unsealed edge allows smoke around the filter.
  • Doing hard work because the task is short: exertion increases both heat strain and inhaled smoke volume.
  • Relying on a fan above 90°F: CDC warns that this can raise body temperature.
  • Ignoring early symptoms: headache, thirst, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, rash and cramps are reasons to cool down and rest.
  • Changing medication without advice: ask a clinician or pharmacist about heat-related medication risks.
  • Waiting for conditions to become intolerable: arrange cooling, cleaner air and transportation before alerts escalate.

The Bottom Line

Protect yourself by combining a cool, closed-window, filtered-air space with less outdoor time and less exertion. Use a well-sealed NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 when exposure cannot be avoided, but treat breathing difficulty, dizziness, overheating and severe heat or heart symptoms as reasons to stop and seek help.
