For most people, PCSX2 on a suitable computer is the most flexible documented option. It supports higher resolutions, save states, virtual memory cards, patches and recording, but requires a PlayStation 2 BIOS dumped from your own console. An original PS2 remains the most direct choice for playing discs, while PS5SX2 on a jailbroken PS5 is an unofficial enthusiast project with changing compatibility and substantially more setup work.
Which PS2 option fits you?
The practical choice depends less on a universal performance ranking than on the hardware and games you already own. Original hardware has the simplest concept: connect a working PS2, controller and disc to a display. PCSX2 adds emulator conveniences and image-quality controls but needs a capable computer and a legally obtained BIOS dump. PS5SX2 combines emulator software with the requirements of a jailbroken PS5 and project-specific payloads.
| Route | Best fit | What you need | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original PS2 | Disc owners and readers who want original hardware | Working PS2, PS2-compatible controller, game disc and a compatible display connection | Old hardware condition and modern-display conversion can vary |
| PCSX2 on PC | Readers wanting resolution scaling, save states and other emulator features | Suitable computer, PCSX2, your own PS2 BIOS dump and game media or files you are entitled to use | Performance and compatibility vary by game, CPU and rendering settings |
| PS5SX2 on a jailbroken PS5 | Technically confident users experimenting with unofficial homebrew | Compatible jailbroken PS5, PS5SX2 Helper payload with kstuff, ShadowMountPlus, your own PS2 BIOS and your own game files | Unofficial, firmware-dependent and explicitly described by its project as rough around the edges |
If you already own a functioning PS2 and discs, original hardware is usually the shortest path. If you want one interface for many games, enhanced resolution and convenient saves, PCSX2 is the better-documented route. Choose PS5SX2 only if you are comfortable maintaining an unofficial setup and accepting that compatibility work is ongoing.

What will each route cost?
The largest cost difference is often the equipment you already have, not the emulator software. PCSX2 itself is free and open source, but you may need to buy or upgrade a computer and controller. A PS5SX2 setup assumes that you already have a jailbreak-compatible PS5; acquiring a console, maintaining it and obtaining project-specific accessories can make it a poor value if emulation is your only goal. No reliable current used-market prices are established here, so compare actual local listings rather than relying on a fixed price claim.

Original hardware can be economical when the console, DualShock 2-compatible controller and discs are already in your collection. If you are buying used, inspect the console’s physical condition, optical drive, controller ports and included cables. Budget separately for a display solution: a PS2-to-HDMI adapter is relevant for an HDMI-only television, while a dedicated retro video upscaler may suit an image-focused setup. Adapter quality, supported modes and latency differ, and no particular model is endorsed.
PCSX2 shifts spending toward the computer. A modern, sufficiently fast CPU matters for demanding games, and a stronger GPU gives more room for high internal resolutions and accurate blending. A computer that already handles your target games may require no new purchase. You still need storage for your legally obtained game files and a reliable way to back up virtual memory-card files.
Playing on an original PlayStation 2
What makes original hardware attractive
A PS2 reads its own discs and uses the original controller ecosystem without an emulator configuration layer. It is the most straightforward option for someone who already has the console, a DualShock 2-compatible controller and games. It also avoids BIOS dumping and PC performance tuning.
The trade-off is hardware age. A used console, controller or optical drive may be worn, and the quality of the result on a modern television depends heavily on the connection and the television’s processing. No particular console, cable or adapter is validated here, so treat condition and compatibility checks as part of the purchase decision.
Check the display before buying accessories
Inspect the television or monitor’s inputs first. PS2 systems can output RGB through SCART and component video; some games support 480p when connected by component. A screen with only HDMI will need a PS2-to-HDMI conversion device or a video upscaler. Those products are not interchangeable: scaling quality, latency, supported modes and deinterlacing can differ, and a generic adapter should not be assumed to perform like a dedicated scaler.
- Identify the exact PS2 model and the ports on the console.
- List the inputs available on the television or monitor, including whether component or SCART is present.
- If the display is HDMI-only, verify that the proposed converter supports the PS2’s output modes and your screen’s input requirements.
- For an image-focused setup, compare a suitable retro video upscaler’s supported resolutions and processing features rather than buying on the connector name alone.
- Test the console with a known-good disc and controller before investing in additional accessories.
Original-console advantages and limits
- Advantages: direct disc playback, no emulator installation, no BIOS dump and authentic controller behavior.
- Limits: aging hardware, limited native output options, possible display-conversion costs and no guarantee that a particular used unit or adapter will work reliably.
Buying and testing a used PS2
Ask whether the listing includes a controller, power lead, video cable and the correct disc tray or drive assembly for that model. Examine photographs for cracked ports, severe discoloration or missing covers. On arrival, test several functions separately: boot to the system menu, read a known-good disc, recognize both analog sticks and vibration, and display a stable picture for a full play session. A console that boots once may still have an intermittent optical-drive or overheating problem. Keep the seller’s return window in mind before purchasing additional cables.

Using PCSX2 on a computer
What PCSX2 provides
PCSX2 is a free, open-source PlayStation 2 emulator. Its documented features include custom internal resolutions and upscaling, virtual and shareable memory cards, save states, game patches and lossless internal recording. These features let you improve clarity on a modern display and create convenient saves without altering the original disc.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
PCSX2 describes a significant majority of the PS2 library as playable, but that is a qualitative description, not a percentage or a promise for every title. A game can behave differently depending on the computer’s processor, graphics settings, emulator version and the game’s own rendering demands.
BIOS ownership is a required step
PCSX2 cannot run games without a PS2 BIOS. The project’s BIOS documentation states: “PCSX2 cannot play games without a BIOS, and no open-source alternative exists.” The BIOS is proprietary software and must be dumped from the user’s own PlayStation 2. Do not download a BIOS shared by an unknown website.
You also need game media or files that you are entitled to use. The emulator does not grant rights to obtain commercial game images, and the exact process for creating a personal backup depends on your hardware and local law. Keep the original disc or other proof of ownership where applicable, and do not assume that a rule allowing a personal backup in one country applies everywhere.
Hardware expectations
There is no single universal PC specification that guarantees perfect emulation. PCSX2’s requirements guidance warns that a processor meeting only moderate requirements can struggle with complex games that push the PS2 hardware. Graphics load rises substantially with internal-resolution scaling and blending-accuracy settings. Check the current PCSX2 requirements page and the compatibility entry for each game you care about before selecting or upgrading a computer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Prioritize a computer with a modern, sufficiently fast CPU for demanding titles.
- Use a graphics processor appropriate for the internal resolution and enhancements you intend to run.
- Leave headroom if you plan to upscale aggressively or use high-accuracy rendering.
- Evaluate each important game separately instead of assuming that a computer that runs one title will run the entire library identically.
- Use the same operating system, renderer and game version when comparing advice from other users; a change in any one can alter the result.
PCSX2 setup sequence
- Install the current PCSX2 release from the project’s official distribution channel.
- Dump the BIOS from your own PS2 using the project’s documented method, then place the resulting files where PCSX2 directs you.
- Connect and configure a compatible controller. Map every button, analog stick and pressure-sensitive input your games require.
- Add your legally obtained game media or image files through PCSX2’s game-list or launch workflow.
- Start with the emulator’s default renderer and resolution. Confirm that the game boots before enabling enhancements.
- Raise internal resolution gradually. If you see slowdown, audio crackle or broken effects, reduce resolution or switch renderer and accuracy settings.
- Create a virtual memory card and use normal in-game saves. Use save states as a convenience, not as your only copy of progress.
- Check the game’s compatibility notes when a title shows graphical errors, freezes or timing problems; apply a documented patch only when it is appropriate for that game and version.
How to troubleshoot a difficult game
- Slow emulation: lower internal resolution first, then review CPU-related settings and the game’s compatibility notes.
- Missing or incorrect effects: try a different renderer or blending-accuracy level; higher accuracy can increase GPU load.
- Controller problems: revisit the per-button mapping and confirm that analog and pressure-sensitive controls are assigned correctly.
- Lost progress: verify that the virtual memory card is configured and that normal in-game saves complete. Keep separate backups rather than relying exclusively on save states.
- A game will not boot: confirm that PCSX2 can see a valid BIOS dump and that the game media is readable before changing advanced settings.
- One game is broken while others work: consult that title’s compatibility entry before changing global settings. A game-specific configuration or documented patch may be safer than lowering accuracy everywhere.
Choosing settings without chasing perfection
Begin with a stable baseline and change one setting at a time. Increasing internal resolution improves sharpness but does not repair a game-specific emulation issue. Accuracy options can restore effects at the cost of GPU load, while aggressive speed tweaks can introduce timing problems. Record which settings work for each important title so an emulator update or a new game does not force you to repeat the whole process.

Running PS5SX2 on a modded PS5
What this route actually is
PS5SX2 is described by its project README as a PCSX2 port running as a native application on a jailbroken PS5. It is not a standard PS5 feature. The project lists upscaling and several PCSX2-derived capabilities, but also calls itself a passion project and asks users to expect rough edges. Compatibility work is ongoing, with updates planned as the project works toward broader library coverage.
Requirements listed by the project
- A jailbroken PS5 that is compatible with the project’s current software requirements.
- The PS5SX2 Helper payload with kstuff.
- ShadowMountPlus and the other project-specific tools required by the current release.
- A PS2 BIOS dumped from your own PS2.
- Your own PS2 game files.
The README reports development on a PS5 Pro running firmware 11.40 and mentions testers on other models and firmware versions. Those are project-maintained, changeable reports rather than a guarantee that a particular console will work. Confirm the README’s current model, firmware and payload notes immediately before attempting setup.
Why it is the most demanding option
You must first maintain a jailbreak environment, then load payloads and mount the files required by the application. Firmware changes can affect the jailbreak or the emulator, and troubleshooting is more specialized than changing a PCSX2 graphics setting. The project is independently maintained and is not authorized or supported by Sony.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For that reason, PS5SX2 makes sense primarily for an enthusiast who already owns a compatible jailbroken console and is willing to follow project updates. Buying or modifying a PS5 solely for this purpose carries more uncertainty than using an original PS2 or a conventional PC emulator.
Risks and maintenance planning
Keep the PS5’s firmware, jailbreak method and PS5SX2 release aligned with the project’s current instructions. Do not update automatically without checking whether the update changes jailbreak compatibility. Preserve copies of your legally created BIOS and game files, and document which payload versions you used. If a new release introduces a regression, being able to return to a known setup is more useful than repeatedly changing several components at once.
Can a PS5 play PS2 discs?
A normal, unmodified PS5 should not be treated as a PS2-disc player. The Sony support information considered here describes PS4 backward compatibility on PS5; it does not establish standard PS2 disc playback. PS5SX2 is a separate, unofficial homebrew project that requires a jailbreak, its own tools, a BIOS dump and game files. It should not be presented as an official Sony feature.

How can you play PS2 games on a modern TV?
You have two practical paths. Keep the PS2 and connect it through a compatible component or SCART input, or use a PS2-to-HDMI adapter or video upscaler when the television lacks those inputs. Check the exact console model, supported video modes and the display’s behavior before purchasing. If you prefer to avoid conversion hardware, run the games through PCSX2 on a computer connected to the television; that shifts the setup burden from video conversion to PC configuration and BIOS dumping.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhich route has the best compatibility?
There is no universal winner. PCSX2’s documentation says a significant majority of the library is playable, but demanding games can expose CPU limits or rendering bugs. Original hardware has the strongest relationship with software designed for the PS2, provided the console, disc and optical drive are healthy. PS5SX2 is the least settled option because its README describes ongoing compatibility work and planned updates. Check the exact title on PCSX2’s compatibility resources and PS5SX2’s current project notes rather than relying on a broad claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you back up?
On original hardware, keep physical discs safe and retain any compatible memory-card backups you make. On PCSX2, back up virtual memory-card files separately from save states; a corrupted state should not erase normal in-game progress. For PS5SX2, preserve the BIOS and game files you are entitled to use, along with the payload and configuration information needed to recreate a working installation. Never treat an emulator’s save-state folder as your only archive.
Decision checklist
- Choose original hardware when disc playback, original controls and the least software configuration matter most, especially if you already own a working PS2.
- Choose PCSX2 when you want higher internal resolutions, save states, virtual memory cards, patches or recording and can provide a capable computer and your own BIOS dump.
- Choose PS5SX2 only when you are comfortable with jailbroken-console maintenance, unofficial software and changing per-game compatibility.
Before committing, check five things: the games you actually want to play, the hardware already in your possession, the display connection, your willingness to dump a BIOS legally from your own console, and your tolerance for troubleshooting. Those answers usually determine the most reliable route more clearly than a generic “best emulator” list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PCSX2 worth using?
For many players, yes. It is free and open source and offers upscaling, virtual memory cards, save states, patches and recording. The trade-offs are obtaining a BIOS dump from your own PS2, configuring a controller and checking compatibility for demanding games.

Do I need a powerful gaming PC for every PS2 game?
Not necessarily, but there is no universal specification that guarantees every title. PCSX2 warns that moderate CPUs can struggle with complex games, and higher internal resolutions or blending accuracy increase GPU demand. Check the current requirements and the compatibility entry for each game you care about.
How do I connect an original PS2 to an HDMI-only TV?
Use a PS2-to-HDMI conversion device or a video upscaler after checking the exact console model and supported output modes. Generic adapters and dedicated scalers can differ in image quality, latency and deinterlacing, so a connector alone does not indicate equivalent performance.
Can a standard PS5 read PS2 game discs?
Do not assume it can. The cited Sony support information covers PS4 backward compatibility on PS5, not standard PS2 disc playback. PS5SX2 is an independent homebrew project requiring a jailbreak, payloads, a BIOS dump and game files.
Is PS5SX2 an official Sony product?
No. Its README describes an independently maintained PCSX2 port for a jailbroken PS5, calls it a passion project and warns of rough edges. Model, firmware and compatibility notes can change, so follow the current project documentation.
Should I use save states instead of memory-card saves?
Use normal in-game saves on a virtual memory card as your primary progress, then use save states for convenience. Keep backups of the memory-card files because a damaged or incompatible state should not be your only copy.
What is the simplest choice for someone who already owns PS2 discs?
A working original PS2 is usually the shortest path because it avoids BIOS dumping and emulator configuration. Check the console, controller, optical drive and display inputs first; an HDMI-only television may require a conversion device or scaler.
The Bottom Line
Choose the original PS2 for direct disc use and the least software work, PCSX2 for the best-documented combination of flexibility and enhancements, and PS5SX2 only as an unofficial experiment for technically confident owners of a compatible jailbroken PS5. Match the route to your games, display, existing hardware and tolerance for troubleshooting rather than assuming one option is perfect for every title.
