The best method depends on the ports you have and how much hardware you want to add. Use the PS1’s analog output directly when the TV accepts the matching signal, insert a dedicated analog-to-digital scaler when the TV is HDMI-only, or use a compatible PS3 over HDMI if you already own one and accept that some PlayStation-format games may behave differently. A passive cable alone cannot convert analog video to HDMI.

Choose among the three practical connection paths

Original PlayStation consoles output analog video. A modern television may accept that signal directly, may require a scaler to convert it to digital video, or may be bypassed by running PlayStation-format software on a PS3 that outputs HDMI. These are different approaches rather than three versions of the same cable.

Path What you need Best fit Main limitation to check
Direct analog connection PS1, a matching analog cable, and a TV with a compatible analog input The fewest extra boxes and cables Many newer TVs omit analog inputs, and the TV must process the signal acceptably
Dedicated scaler PS1 and a scaler that accepts the signal from your cable, plus HDMI to the TV An HDMI-only TV or a setup where you want a purpose-built conversion stage Input support is specific; PS1 composite can be off-spec on some products
PS3 over HDMI Compatible PS3, HDMI cable, and the PlayStation-format software you intend to use Someone who already has a PS3 and values a consolidated digital connection Sony cautions that some PlayStation-format titles can run differently or fail to work properly

No supplied source establishes a universal winner for image quality, input latency, or a CRT-like appearance. Treat those as setup-dependent characteristics, not guaranteed results.

Inspect the ports and signal before buying anything

Start with the television

Look at the exact model’s rear and side panels and its manual. A television may have an analog input, but the connector can vary by model and region. Do not infer compatibility from the TV’s age or from a similarly named model. If the only video input available to you is HDMI, a conversion device or another HDMI-capable console route is required.

Identify the PS1 cable’s output

The console and cable determine the signal that reaches the display chain. Composite, S-Video, component, and RGB/HD15 are not interchangeable inputs. A cable that ends in one type of connector does not automatically provide another type of signal, and a scaler must explicitly support the signal it receives.

Separate connectors from conversion

A passive plug or cable can change the physical shape of a connector, but it does not perform analog-to-digital conversion, upscale the picture, or correct timing. For an HDMI-only television, the intermediate device must be an actual scaler or another console that produces HDMI video.

Path 1: connect the PS1 directly to an analog TV input

When this is the simplest route

Use this path when the television has a compatible composite input and you have the corresponding PS1 cable. It has the fewest components: console, cable, television, and the correct input selection. There is no separate conversion box to power or configure.

Connection steps

  1. Turn off the PS1 and television before connecting the cable.
  2. Match each plug to the television input identified in its manual. Do not force a connector into a port with a different electrical function.
  3. Connect the cable to the PS1’s AV output and the television’s matching analog input.
  4. Turn on the television, select that input, and then start the console.
  5. If the TV offers an input-format choice, select the format that matches the connected cable rather than guessing from the connector color alone.

What this path does not do

The direct connection does not itself upscale the PS1’s analog video. The television receives the source and performs whatever processing its own hardware and firmware provide. The available evidence does not establish a common quality or latency result across TV brands, models, or picture modes.

If the picture is missing

  • Confirm that the TV is on the input used by the cable, not a similarly labeled digital input.
  • Recheck that the cable is fully seated at both ends and that the plugs are connected to matching ports.
  • Try the TV’s alternate analog input if the model provides more than one.
  • Test the PS1 and cable on another known-compatible display, if available, to determine whether the fault follows the console, cable, or television.
  • If the TV has no compatible analog input, stop trying passive adapters and move to a scaler or an HDMI-capable console route.

Path 2: use a dedicated analog video scaler

What a scaler contributes

A scaler accepts a supported analog video signal, converts it, and sends digital video to an HDMI display. This is the appropriate class of device when the television cannot accept the PS1’s analog output. It is more than a cable because it contains the electronics needed for conversion and display timing.

RetroTINK-2X Pro as a concrete example

The manufacturer’s RetroTINK-2X Pro documentation lists composite, S-Video, and component inputs and a digital video output. That makes it an example of a scaler whose usefulness depends on the signal delivered by the particular console-and-cable combination. Verify the current product documentation and the exact input wiring before purchase.

Its documentation also warns that PS1 and PSOne composite output can be off-spec and may not work correctly with the 2X Pro. Therefore, “the scaler accepts composite” is not the same as “every PS1 composite connection is guaranteed to work.” If a composite setup fails, check the product’s PS1 compatibility note before assuming the console is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Basic scaler setup

  1. Identify the signal produced by your PS1 cable: composite, S-Video, component, or another supported format.
  2. Confirm that the scaler has a matching input. Do not connect an RGB or HD15 cable to a port intended for composite, S-Video, or component.
  3. Connect the PS1 to the scaler, then connect the scaler’s digital output to an HDMI input on the TV.
  4. Power the scaler according to its instructions before starting the console, if the product specifies an order.
  5. Select the TV’s HDMI input and the scaler input that corresponds to the connected cable.
  6. If the screen remains blank, test another supported input path and consult the scaler’s PS1-specific compatibility guidance.

Advanced RGB and HD15 arrangements

A PS1 HD15 dongle is an active adapter intended for use with a compatible scaler. It is not an all-in-one HDMI solution: the manufacturer states that it does not upscale the signal or alter its timing. It also is not intended for PS2 or PS3. This arrangement is for an already planned RGB/HD15-and-scaler chain, not for someone seeking a single plug-and-play cable.

The same documentation warns that some HDMI-modded PS1 units can experience sync drops because of power on the AV-out pin. If your console has been modified for HDMI, treat that hardware status as part of the compatibility check. A dongle that works with an unmodified console should not automatically be assumed to work with every modified unit.

When a scaler is the better investment

  • Your TV is HDMI-only.
  • You want the conversion stage to be independent of the television’s analog processing.
  • You have a cable and signal type that the chosen scaler explicitly supports.
  • You are prepared to troubleshoot signal-specific behavior instead of assuming every analog format is equivalent.

Path 3: play PlayStation-format software through a PS3

Why this avoids the PS1 video connection

Sony’s PS3 video-output documentation describes HDMI output and notes that HDMI operation depends on the connected device’s HDCP compatibility. A PS3 therefore gives the television a digital video source, so the original PS1’s analog output is not part of the display chain.

General setup

  1. Connect the PS3 to the television with an HDMI cable.
  2. Select the corresponding HDMI input on the TV.
  3. Complete the PS3’s video-output configuration for the connected display.
  4. Use the PS3’s game functionality with the PlayStation-format software you intend to play.
  5. If video does not appear, check the television’s HDCP compatibility and repeat the PS3 video-output setup using the console’s documented procedure.

Compatibility is not identical to an original PS1

Sony’s game-settings documentation cautions that some PlayStation-format games may run differently on PS3 or may not work properly. This matters most when a title is sensitive to timing, peripherals, save behavior, or other console-specific details. The PS3 route is consequently a practical alternative for owners of a compatible console and software, not a promise of identical behavior for every game.

Who should choose this route

Choose it when you already own a PS3 that supports the software you want and prefer one HDMI connection over an analog-video chain. If a particular game is important, check its behavior rather than assuming that support for the format guarantees perfect operation.

Use the table as a screening tool, then verify the exact hardware. The available manufacturer material does not provide a sourced head-to-head ranking for sharpness, latency, or “best” picture across these paths.

Decision guide for common setups

You have a modern HDMI-only TV and an unmodified PS1

Start with a dedicated scaler whose input matches your cable. Check the product’s PS1 compatibility notes before choosing composite, especially where the manufacturer warns about off-spec PS1 or PSOne output. A passive HDMI adapter cannot replace this step.

Your TV still has the right analog input

Try the direct connection first. It avoids additional hardware and gives you a clear baseline for whether the console and cable produce a usable picture. If the television’s processing is unsatisfactory for your needs, a scaler can be evaluated later, provided it supports your signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You already own a PS3

Use the PS3’s HDMI output if the software you care about is compatible and you accept the possibility of different behavior. This is often the shortest cable path to the TV, but it is not an assurance that every PlayStation-format title will function exactly as it does on original hardware.

You have an HDMI-modded PS1

Do not assume that an accessory designed for an unmodified AV output will behave identically. The HD15 dongle documentation specifically mentions possible sync drops on some HDMI-modded units caused by power on the AV-out pin. Confirm the mod’s signal and power characteristics before assembling an RGB/HD15 chain.

Troubleshoot in a controlled order

No signal on a direct analog connection

  1. Verify the TV input selection.
  2. Verify that the cable’s signal type matches the TV input.
  3. Reseat the cable at the console and TV.
  4. Try another compatible display or cable to isolate the failed component.
  5. If the TV has no suitable analog input, change approaches rather than adding a passive connector.

No signal through a scaler

  1. Confirm that the scaler input matches the cable’s actual signal.
  2. Confirm that the scaler’s digital output is connected to the selected HDMI input.
  3. Check the scaler’s PS1/PSOne compatibility notes, including any warning about off-spec composite output.
  4. If using HD15, verify that the adapter is paired with a compatible scaler and that the console is not a model or modification excluded by the adapter’s documentation.
  5. For an HDMI-modded PS1 with intermittent sync, investigate the AV-out power condition identified by the accessory manufacturer before replacing unrelated cables.

No picture from a PS3

  1. Confirm that the TV is on the PS3’s HDMI input.
  2. Check the HDMI connection at both ends.
  3. Review the PS3 video-output setup and the display’s HDCP compatibility.
  4. Once video works, test the specific PlayStation-format game; a working menu does not establish that every title will run correctly.

Buying and setup checklist

  • Record the exact TV model and every available video input.
  • Record the PS1 model or revision and whether it has been modified.
  • Identify the cable’s signal type instead of relying only on connector appearance.
  • For a scaler, confirm the matching input and read the manufacturer’s PS1-specific warnings.
  • For an HD15 arrangement, budget for the compatible scaler; the dongle itself does not upscale or change timing.
  • For a PS3 route, verify HDCP compatibility and the individual game’s behavior.
  • Keep the original direct connection, where possible, as a diagnostic baseline before adding more components.
  • Document which TV input, scaler input, and console setting produced a working picture so future troubleshooting starts from a known configuration.

What can and cannot be promised

These routes solve the fundamental connection problem in different ways, but the supplied manufacturer documentation does not establish one universal winner for visual quality or latency. A direct analog input may be adequate, a scaler may be necessary for an HDMI-only display, and a PS3 may be convenient when its software compatibility is acceptable. The correct choice is the one whose signal path, ports, and game behavior match your equipment and priorities.
