The best method depends on the inputs on your television. If it has a compatible analog video input, connect the original PlayStation 2 directly with the appropriate cable. If it has only HDMI, add a PS2-to-HDMI converter or a component-to-HDMI scaler. Those devices vary by model, so verify signal, audio and regional compatibility rather than assuming any inexpensive adapter will work. A compatible PlayStation 3 or PCSX2 on a computer with an optical drive can also use physical PS2 discs, but both alternatives have important compatibility conditions.
Choose the connection path before buying anything
Look at the television first. Identify every video input, not just the ports you normally use, and then match that input to the cable available for your PS2. The original console outputs through its rear AV Multi Out connector. Sony’s PS2 connection instructions describe connecting that port to a television video input, connecting the audio leads, and selecting the corresponding input on the TV. The exact labels and available sockets vary by television model; a Sony BRAVIA instruction page is model-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every current TV has the same ports.
| TV input available | What you need | Best fit | Important checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composite video and left/right audio (usually yellow, white and red) | PS2 composite AV cable | Simplest original-hardware setup | Confirm the yellow video socket and both audio sockets are present and select that input on the TV. |
| Component video (Y, Pb/Cb, Pr/Cr) and audio | PS2 component AV cable, such as Sony SCPH-10490 or SCPH-10100 | Direct analog connection where the TV accepts component | Verify the cable and console combination; connect the three video plugs to the matching colors and the two audio plugs separately. |
| HDMI only | PS2 cable plus a PS2-to-HDMI converter or component-to-HDMI scaler | Modern TVs without analog inputs | Check supported PS2 output modes, regional signal, audio routing, aspect-ratio controls and the TV’s behavior with the converter. |
| Compatible PS3 disc drive | A PS3 model that supports PS2-format discs | Someone who already owns the right PS3 and wants to insert the disc directly | Model and game compatibility are not universal; Sony warns that some systems cannot play PS2 discs and some games behave differently. |
| Computer with DVD/CD optical drive | PCSX2 and a compatible computer | Someone comfortable with emulation and computer setup | The drive must read standard DVDs/CDs; check PCSX2’s game and system requirements. |
If preserving the original PS2 in the signal chain is your priority, start with a direct analog connection and use conversion only when the TV requires HDMI. If convenience, save states or computer-based enhancements matter more, evaluate PCSX2 separately rather than buying a converter for a television that cannot accept the console’s native signal.
Direct connection to a television with analog inputs
Composite AV: the basic route
A composite cable carries video on one plug and stereo audio on two others. Connect the PS2 end to the rear AV Multi Out, then connect the video plug to the TV’s composite video input and the two audio plugs to the left and right audio inputs. On some televisions the audio sockets are adjacent to a side or rear video jack; on others they are grouped under a shared input label. Follow the labels on the set, not the physical position alone.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Turn off the PS2 and television while making the connections.
- Insert the cable’s console connector fully into the PS2 AV Multi Out port.
- Connect the video lead to the TV’s composite video socket and the two audio leads to the matching left and right inputs.
- Turn on the television, then the PS2.
- Use the TV remote’s Input or Source control to select the exact input used for the cable.
No picture usually means the TV is on the wrong source, the video plug is in an audio socket, or the connector is not seated. No sound with a picture generally indicates that one or both audio plugs are in the wrong sockets or that the TV has a separate audio-input assignment for that video source.
Component AV: a cleaner analog option when supported
Component video separates the picture into Y, Pb/Cb and Pr/Cr signals, while the left and right audio plugs remain separate. Sony’s accessory compatibility table lists component AV cable models SCPH-10490 and SCPH-10100 for the PS2 90000, 70000, 50000, 30000 and 10000 families. The table also notes that support combinations can vary, so check the exact console model and cable before purchase. The listing identifies compatible model numbers; it does not establish current retail stock or guarantee that a used cable is in good condition.
- Connect the component cable to the PS2’s AV Multi Out.
- Plug the three video connectors into the television’s Y, Pb/Cb and Pr/Cr sockets. Match the labels rather than relying only on color, because some sets use different color rings.
- Connect the red and white audio plugs to the corresponding audio inputs associated with the component source.
- Switch the TV to its component input.
- Start the PS2 and verify that the image and both audio channels are present.
Some modern sets provide component through a shared or breakout connector rather than five full-size sockets. In that case, use only the television’s documented adapter harness and confirm which input mode the menu expects. A component cable does not automatically produce a digital HDMI signal; it is still an analog connection until a separate scaler or converter processes it.

Using a PS2-to-HDMI converter or component scaler
An HDMI-only television needs an additional conversion stage because the PS2’s AV Multi Out is analog. Two common categories are a small PS2-to-HDMI adapter that accepts the console cable directly, and a component-to-HDMI scaler that takes the three component-video signals plus audio. The practical connection requirement follows from Sony’s analog-output documentation and the TV’s lack of analog sockets, but the official materials reviewed here do not test any particular third-party device.
What to verify on a converter listing or manual
- Input type: determine whether it accepts the PS2’s native connector, composite, or component. A component scaler may require a separate PS2 component cable.
- Supported modes: confirm that it accepts the PS2 resolutions and refresh rates used by your games and regional console. Do not assume support for every PAL or NTSC mode.
- Audio path: check whether analog audio is embedded into HDMI, passed through a separate 3.5 mm or optical output, or requires another connection.
- Power: identify whether the device is powered by USB, an external adapter or the HDMI port, and whether that power source is available near the TV.
- Display controls: look for aspect-ratio, integer-scaling, deinterlacing and zoom options if those matter to you. Their presence does not prove a particular picture quality.
- TV compatibility: verify that the TV accepts the converter’s HDMI timing and that its input does not reject older 240p-like game signals.
Neither the cited Sony pages nor the PCSX2 documentation establish universal adapter compatibility, input lag, image quality or a guaranteed improvement from an inexpensive dongle. Treat those as product-specific questions. If a listing does not state the supported PS2 modes or audio behavior, it is an unverified choice rather than a safe recommendation.
Connection procedure
- Choose the PS2 cable required by the converter. Use a compatible component cable when the converter has component inputs; use the converter’s specified PS2 lead when it plugs directly into AV Multi Out.
- Connect the cable to the PS2, then connect video and audio to the converter according to its labels.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI output to the TV and provide the required power.
- Select the HDMI input used by the converter.
- Power on the TV, converter and PS2 in that order if the converter manual recommends it; otherwise follow its startup sequence.
- Set the TV’s aspect ratio to a mode that preserves the game’s intended 4:3 framing instead of stretching the picture. The correct menu name varies by TV.
If the TV reports “no signal,” test the PS2 directly on a known-compatible analog display if possible. That separates a console or cable problem from a converter or HDMI-handshake problem. If the picture appears but is black-and-white, check the converter’s region and signal-mode support and make sure component plugs are not connected to composite inputs.

Preserve the original picture shape and audio
Most PS2 games were designed around a 4:3 display area, although some titles offer widescreen modes. A modern 16:9 television may stretch the image unless you select an aspect-ratio setting such as 4:3, Original, or Just Scan without forced zoom. The appropriate option depends on the set and the game’s own display menu. Avoid claiming that one setting is universally correct: televisions and games handle scaling differently, and the reviewed sources do not compare their results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor audio, stereo red-and-white leads are the baseline path. A converter may combine those channels into HDMI, but some devices expose audio separately. If the picture works and sound does not, inspect the converter’s audio-output selection, the TV input’s audio assignment and the cable’s left/right connections before changing PS2 software settings.
Can a PlayStation 3 play the original disc?
Sometimes, but only on specific PS3 hardware. Sony’s PlayStation 3 User’s Guide states that some PS3 systems cannot play PS2-format discs. It also warns that some PS2 software may operate differently or not properly on a supported system. Therefore, “PS3” is not a sufficient compatibility check; you need the exact PS3 model and the particular game.

How to evaluate the PS3 route
- Identify the PS3 model number from the console label or system information.
- Check Sony’s compatibility documentation for that model’s PS2-disc support.
- Check the game title separately, because support for the console does not guarantee identical behavior for every disc.
- Insert the original disc only after confirming the model and title.
- For supported systems, review the PS3 Game Settings menu for display options. Sony documents SD-to-HD upscaling controls and states that HDMI or component AV is required for that feature.
This option makes sense when you already own a verified compatible PS3. Buying an unverified used PS3 solely for PS2 playback carries a model-compatibility risk, and the official guide does not promise that every supported game will look or behave exactly as it did on a PS2.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can PCSX2 read an original PS2 disc?
Yes, when the computer has a standard DVD/CD-capable optical drive. PCSX2’s official “Dumping Discs” documentation explains that PS2 game discs are unencrypted DVDs and CDs that ordinary drives can read. It describes direct-disc play as possible, while recommending that users dump discs to image files because file-based use has practical advantages.
Direct-disc setup
- Install PCSX2 using its current official setup instructions.
- Confirm that the computer has an optical drive capable of reading DVDs and CDs. A drive that only reads CDs is insufficient for DVD-based games.
- Insert the original PS2 disc.
- In PCSX2, select the optical drive as the disc source and start the game through the emulator’s disc-boot option.
- Complete PCSX2’s controller, graphics and memory-card configuration.
The emulator uses the computer’s optical drive; it does not use the PS2 console’s drive. A disc may be readable yet still require game-specific settings or updates for reliable emulation, so consult PCSX2’s compatibility and setup guidance for the title and computer you have.

Why create a disc image?
PCSX2’s documentation describes advantages to dumping the disc and running the resulting image file. A file avoids repeatedly using the physical disc and optical drive, usually makes game selection more convenient, and allows you to keep the original disc stored safely. Use only discs you own and keep the image for personal use in accordance with the laws that apply where you live. Creating an image does not guarantee that every game will emulate perfectly; it simply changes the storage and loading method.
Decision guide: which method fits your situation?
| Your situation | Recommended starting point | Why | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| The TV has composite input and you want the fewest extra devices | Direct composite connection | Uses the PS2 and a compatible cable without conversion hardware. | Picture processing depends heavily on the TV’s analog input and scaling. |
| The TV has component input | Direct component connection with a compatible cable | Uses the PS2’s analog output with the television’s component circuitry. | You must match the cable model, input labels and audio routing. |
| The TV has HDMI only, and original hardware is essential | PS2-to-HDMI converter or component-to-HDMI scaler | Adds the conversion needed by an HDMI-only display. | Performance, lag, scaling and mode support are device-specific and unverified here. |
| You already own a PS3 and want disc playback without a PS2 | Verify the exact PS3 model and game first | A supported PS3 can read the physical disc directly. | Some PS3 systems cannot play PS2 discs, and supported games may differ. |
| You have a computer with an optical drive and accept emulation | PCSX2, initially with direct-disc testing or a personal disc dump | Standard DVD/CD drives can read PS2 discs, and image files offer practical convenience. | Computer, emulator and game-specific compatibility all matter. |
Troubleshooting checklist
No picture
- Confirm the TV is set to the exact composite, component or HDMI source in use.
- Reseat the AV Multi Out connector and every video plug.
- For component, verify Y, Pb/Cb and Pr/Cr rather than plugging into similarly colored composite sockets.
- For HDMI conversion, verify power, input mode and whether the converter accepts the PS2’s regional signal.
- Try the console and cable on a known-compatible display to isolate the failing part.
Picture but no sound
- Check the left and right audio plugs and the audio-input assignment on the TV.
- Confirm that the converter embeds or outputs analog audio in the way your setup expects.
- Test another game or a system menu sound to distinguish a disc-specific issue from a connection issue.
Distorted, stretched or unstable image
- Set the TV to a non-stretched 4:3 or original aspect mode.
- Disable aggressive zoom or overscan controls.
- Check whether the converter supports the game’s resolution and refresh rate.
- On a PS3, review the documented upscaling settings and required HDMI or component connection.
PS3 refuses the disc
- Recheck the exact PS3 model; “PS3” alone does not establish PS2-disc support.
- Check the individual title’s behavior on that supported model.
- Do not assume a software update can turn an unsupported PS3 model into a compatible one.
PCSX2 cannot start the disc
- Confirm that the optical drive reads DVDs as well as CDs.
- Check that PCSX2 is pointed to the correct drive and that the disc is recognized by the operating system.
- Try creating a personal disc image and use the image source if direct-disc access remains unreliable.
- Consult the emulator’s title-specific compatibility notes rather than changing random graphics settings.
What to verify before purchasing cables or hardware
- Console family: Sony’s component table covers the 90000, 70000, 50000, 30000 and 10000 series, but confirm your exact model.
- Television inputs: ports vary by model, and a socket labeled for component may share hardware with another input mode.
- Cable condition: inspect used cables for bent pins, cracked insulation and intermittent audio.
- Signal region: ensure a converter or scaler states support for your console’s PAL or NTSC output where relevant.
- Audio routing: establish where the red and white channels go after conversion.
- Physical-disc alternative: verify a PS3 model or computer optical drive before relying on it.
There is no evidence here for a universal “best” scaler, a guaranteed low-lag adapter, or a particular current retail product. Make the purchase only after the device documentation identifies the inputs and PS2 signal modes your setup requires.
