You can play games without buying a new console by streaming them to a supported TV, computer, phone, or tablet. The right option depends on whether you want games included with a subscription, games you already own, or a way to play on your TV. Cloud gaming still needs a compatible device, a stable internet connection, and, for most services, a paid plan.
How can you play games without a console?
Cloud gaming runs a game on a remote server and streams its video and audio to your device while sending your controller inputs back over the internet. You do not need a console to run the game locally, but the service must support your device and the title you want to play.
There are three main access models: a subscription catalog, streaming supported games you already own, or a cloud catalog tied to a membership you already have. These models are not interchangeable. In particular, a cloud service does not automatically give you ownership of every game it can stream.

| Service | How you get games | Device and plan considerations | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Most cloud games come from the supported Game Pass library. | Most games require an active Game Pass subscription. Selected TVs, Fire TV models, computers, phones, and other devices are supported. Titles and limits vary by plan, platform, and region. | You want a console-style catalog on a supported screen and are comfortable with a subscription. |
| NVIDIA GeForce NOW | Stream supported games you own through supported stores; some free-to-play games are also available. | A free membership and paid tiers are offered. Device support and features depend on membership; TV play requires a supported gamepad. | You already have PC games in supported stores or want to try a free membership. |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | Stream eligible games from the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, and select other games. | Cloud streaming is a Premium benefit. The US catalog page lists streaming on PS4, PS5, and PC; eligible titles and availability depend on region. | You are interested in eligible PlayStation games and have a supported device. |
| Amazon Luna | Play games from Luna’s cloud catalog; Amazon says a selection is included for Prime members. | Supported devices include Fire TV, computers, mobile devices, selected smart TVs, and other listed regional devices. Availability and catalogs vary by country. | You already have Prime and want to try games on a compatible device. |
Catalogs, plans, device lists, and availability change. Before subscribing, check the service’s official page for your country, exact device, and intended game. A game appearing in a service’s overall library does not necessarily mean it is available to every member on every device or plan.

Can you play Xbox games on a TV without an Xbox?
Yes, if the TV or streaming device is supported and you have access to the game through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Xbox lists selected Samsung smart TVs and monitors, selected VIDAA TVs, and specific Fire TV models. Most games in the Xbox app’s cloud catalog require an active Game Pass subscription and must be supported for cloud play. Xbox says features and play limits vary by plan, region, and platform; cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass.
Xbox’s compatibility guidance recommends at least 10 Mbps for mobile devices and 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs, and tablets, along with 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. These are Xbox-published recommendations, not a guarantee of smooth play. Xbox notes that results also depend on your location, device, connection, and other factors. See Xbox’s device compatibility and cloud gaming guidance for current device and plan details.

Can you play games you already own on another device?
GeForce NOW is designed for streaming supported games associated with supported digital stores. It does not automatically grant ownership of paid games: you need to own or purchase a supported title, and you may need to sign in to the relevant store account. Free-to-play titles are also supported. NVIDIA reports a library of more than 4,500 games, but that is the supported library count—not a promise that every game is available to every member, in every region, or under every tier.

NVIDIA recommends Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and specifies latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. Actual performance also depends on network stability and the route between you and the service.

What if you want PlayStation games without a new console?
PlayStation Plus Premium is the relevant cloud-streaming tier. The US catalog page describes eligible streaming games from the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, and select other games, with streaming on PS4, PS5, and PC. The title must be eligible, and availability depends on the region and supported device.

Do not confuse streaming with downloading: PlayStation Plus Extra includes a game download catalog, but cloud streaming is a Premium benefit. PlayStation’s support guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p. These are service-published thresholds, not a guarantee of image quality or low input delay. Check the PlayStation Plus game catalog and cloud streaming support page for current plan, title, and device eligibility.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What internet speed and equipment do you need?
Use each provider’s requirements as a starting point, not as a prediction of how the service will perform in your home. The figures below are provider-published guidance; they are not independent tests.
| Service | Published connection guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | 10 Mbps for mobile; 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs, and tablets. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. | Xbox says performance depends on location, device, connection, and other factors; plan limits vary. |
| GeForce NOW | 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS; 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS; 35 Mbps for QHD/UW QHD at 120 FPS; 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 FPS. NVIDIA recommends Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and less than 80 ms latency to an NVIDIA data center. | Requirements and available streaming features depend on device and membership. A bandwidth check alone does not establish latency or stability. |
| PlayStation Plus cloud streaming | 5 Mbps minimum; 15 Mbps for 1080p. | Streaming is limited to supported devices, regions, and eligible games. |
A speed test measures only part of the picture. Wi-Fi interference, network congestion, distance to a service data center, and latency can affect responsiveness even when your download speed meets a published threshold. If possible, use Ethernet or a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection, pause large downloads, and test the service before paying for a longer subscription.
What controller or streaming device might you need?
For TV play, a compatible controller is often the only accessory you need. Xbox says its app can work with Xbox controllers, Sony PlayStation controllers, and more; NVIDIA requires a supported gamepad for TV play. Compatibility is specific to the TV, operating system, service, and controller model, so check both the service and device lists rather than assuming any Bluetooth controller will work.
A Fire TV Stick may be useful if your existing TV lacks a supported app, but only certain Fire TV models and software versions are compatible with Xbox or GeForce NOW. Check the relevant official compatibility list before buying a device. You do not need to buy a new TV, console, or gaming PC just to try cloud gaming.
Quick Recap
How should you choose?
- Start with your games. If you want an included catalog, compare Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Plus Premium, or Luna based on the titles currently available in your region. If you own PC games, check GeForce NOW’s supported-game list and store requirements.
- Check your device before subscribing. Confirm the exact TV model, streaming device, computer, phone, or tablet is supported, and verify whether a controller is required.
- Check the full cost and access limits. Confirm the current plan price, whether the game is included or must be owned separately, and any plan-specific cloud play limits. Do not rely on an older catalog or pricing page.
- Test your connection and play style. Meet the provider’s published speed guidance, then try a game that suits your connection. Fast reactions and competitive play can be more sensitive to latency than slower-paced games.
- Buy only what is missing. If your TV is supported, start with a compatible controller. If it is not, check whether a specifically supported streaming device would solve the problem before purchasing.
