You can gain indirect exposure to Microsoft without purchasing MSFT shares by owning a fund that includes Microsoft. For most investors, a broad S&P 500 index fund is the starting point: it holds Microsoft alongside hundreds of other large U.S. companies. A Nasdaq-100 fund gives Microsoft a similar-sized but more technology- and growth-oriented position, while a total-market or global fund dilutes Microsoft exposure across more companies and countries.
The right choice depends on the Microsoft weight on the date you buy, how diversified you want to be, the fund’s expense ratio and trading method, whether it is available in your brokerage or retirement plan, and your ability to tolerate technology-sector volatility. Fund holdings change, so check the provider’s dated holdings file before placing an order.
What it means to invest in Microsoft indirectly
A fund pools money from many investors and uses it to buy a portfolio. When Microsoft is one of those holdings, each fund share gives you an economic interest in a small portion of the portfolio’s Microsoft position, together with all its other holdings. You do not own Microsoft shares in your own name, do not receive Microsoft’s shareholder voting rights directly, and cannot choose the fund’s Microsoft allocation yourself.
Investor.gov defines an index fund as “a type of mutual fund or exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the returns of a market index.” An index fund can therefore provide Microsoft exposure as a consequence of tracking an index that includes Microsoft. Your return will reflect the fund’s whole portfolio, fees, distributions and tracking difference, not Microsoft’s share price alone.

This is different from buying a Microsoft direct-stock plan. Microsoft’s investor-relations materials identify Computershare as administrator of a direct stock-purchase plan and a dividend-reinvestment plan. Those plans purchase individual Microsoft shares, so they do not meet a requirement to avoid individual stocks.
The main fund routes
| Route | What you own | Microsoft data available for this comparison | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broad S&P 500 ETF or mutual fund | Large U.S. companies across many sectors | IVV reported 4.91% in Microsoft and 503 holdings on March 31, 2026. Vanguard’s VOO listing showed a 0.03% expense ratio in 2026. | A diversified core holding with meaningful but not dominant Microsoft exposure | Microsoft remains a large position because it is one of the biggest companies in the index |
| Nasdaq-100 ETF | Large non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq, with heavy technology and growth exposure | QQQ listed Microsoft at 5.62% among top holdings on March 31, 2026 | Investors deliberately seeking a stronger technology and growth tilt | Greater concentration and potentially larger sector drawdowns than a broad-market fund |
| Total-market or global index fund | Most or all investable companies in a national or global market | The current Microsoft percentage must be checked in the fund’s holdings file; no universal percentage applies | Maximum diversification across company sizes, sectors and, for global funds, countries | Microsoft usually represents a smaller slice, so the indirect exposure is less pronounced |
| Index mutual fund in a 401(k) or IRA | The portfolio specified by the mutual fund, often tracking a broad index | Varies by the plan’s menu and share class | People whose retirement account offers mutual funds but not every ETF | Different fees, dealing times, share classes and tax rules may apply |
The percentages in the table are dated observations, not permanent allocations. Index providers change constituents and weights as prices, company sizes and index rules change.
Broad S&P 500 funds: the default core option
An S&P 500 fund tracks an index of large U.S. companies. Because Microsoft is among the index’s largest constituents, you receive substantial exposure without making the investment dependent on one company. The other holdings include businesses in sectors such as health care, financial services, industrials, consumer products and energy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat the published figures show
BlackRock’s iShares IVV fact sheet dated March 31, 2026 reported 503 holdings and a 4.91% Microsoft weight. That means a $10,000 position would have had approximately $491 of indirect Microsoft exposure on that date, before market movements and fees; it did not mean the fund would retain that dollar amount or percentage.
Vanguard’s 2026 listing for VOO showed a 0.03% expense ratio. An expense ratio is deducted from fund assets rather than billed as a separate invoice. Check the current prospectus because fees, trading costs and account-level charges are separate matters.

Why this route is usually sensible
- Company-specific risk is diluted. A poor Microsoft result affects one holding rather than your entire investment.
- The portfolio is easy to understand. You are buying a slice of large U.S. public companies, not a specialized strategy.
- It can serve as a long-term core. You do not need to forecast which individual technology company will lead next year.
The compromise is that Microsoft can still move the fund because a mega-cap company receives a large index weight. An S&P 500 fund is diversified, not Microsoft-neutral.
Nasdaq-100 funds: more concentrated technology exposure
A Nasdaq-100 fund tracks a large-company index that excludes financial companies and has substantial exposure to technology, communications and consumer-growth businesses. It can provide Microsoft exposure while emphasizing the types of companies whose earnings and valuations are often more sensitive to interest rates, innovation cycles and technology spending.

QQQ’s dated Microsoft weight
Invesco’s QQQ page listed Microsoft at 5.62% among its top holdings as of March 31, 2026. That was higher than the 4.91% Microsoft weight reported for IVV on the same date, but the two figures describe different indexes and should not be treated as a permanent spread. QQQ’s other holdings can also be highly correlated with Microsoft, so the portfolio may be more concentrated in a common economic theme even when it owns many companies.
Do not confuse similarly named funds
Invesco’s QQQ Income Advantage ETF page listed Microsoft at 4.36% as of September 28, 2026. That is a different fund from QQQ, with a different mandate and holdings. Similar names, the same sponsor and an overlapping ticker family do not make funds interchangeable. Read the exact fund name, ticker, prospectus, distribution policy and holdings date before trading.
When a Nasdaq-100 fund can make sense
- You already have diversified assets elsewhere and intentionally want a larger technology and growth allocation.
- You understand that a technology-heavy fund can fall more than a broad-market fund during valuation or sector sell-offs.
- You can hold through periods when Microsoft and other large technology companies underperform the wider market.
A Nasdaq-100 fund is not a safer way to own Microsoft. It is an indirect route with a different concentration profile.

Total-market and global index funds
A total U.S. market fund owns large-, mid- and small-cap companies rather than limiting the portfolio to the largest 500. A global index fund adds companies outside the United States. Because Microsoft is only one constituent among many more companies, its percentage is generally lower than in a large-cap or Nasdaq-100 strategy, although the exact weight depends on the index and date.

- More company sizes: smaller and mid-sized businesses can contribute to returns instead of relying primarily on mega-cap stocks.
- More countries: a global fund reduces dependence on the U.S. market and the U.S. dollar, while introducing currency and geopolitical risks.
- Less Microsoft sensitivity: Microsoft can still be a top holding, but a smaller percentage means its company-specific news usually has less effect on the total fund.
There is no single current Microsoft percentage for all total-market or global funds. Look up the fund’s holdings file, identify the reporting date, and note whether the percentage is based on net assets, an index snapshot or a delayed publication.
Mutual funds in retirement plans
Your 401(k), 403(b), IRA or other retirement account may offer an index mutual fund even when the brokerage interface does not list every ETF. The exposure comes from the mutual fund’s index and holdings, not from the account type itself.
What to compare inside the plan
- Expense ratio and other plan costs: compare the actual share class available to you, not the cheapest ETF version seen online.
- Trading frequency: mutual funds generally transact once per business day at the next calculated net asset value (NAV), while ETFs trade throughout the session.
- Minimums and automatic contributions: a mutual fund may support payroll contributions or fractional purchases more conveniently.
- Account rules: contribution limits, withdrawals, employer matching, required distributions and tax treatment depend on the specific retirement account and your jurisdiction.
- Investment menu: a plan may use a broad S&P 500, total-market or target-date fund whose Microsoft exposure is only one component.
Read the plan’s fee disclosure and fund fact sheet. A familiar index label does not guarantee identical expenses, tracking quality or holdings.
How to choose the route that fits you
| If your priority is… | Usually investigate first | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| A diversified U.S. core | S&P 500 fund | How much Microsoft and other mega-cap technology exposure is already in my portfolio? |
| A deliberate growth and technology tilt | Nasdaq-100 fund | Can I tolerate larger drawdowns and overlap with technology funds I already own? |
| The broadest company and country mix | Total-market or global fund | What are the foreign, currency, small-company and regional risks, and what is Microsoft’s dated weight? |
| Payroll investing or an employer plan | Index mutual fund on the plan menu | What is the exact share class, fee, dealing time and tax treatment? |
Check for duplicated exposure
Owning an S&P 500 fund, a Nasdaq-100 fund and a technology-sector fund does not create three independent bets. All may hold Microsoft and many of the same large technology companies. Add the Microsoft percentages of your funds only as an approximation, because each percentage has a different date and portfolio denominator, then examine the top holdings for overlap.

Match concentration to your time horizon
Money needed soon generally has less capacity for a concentrated equity position than money invested for decades. A Nasdaq-100 allocation can experience a larger temporary decline than a broad-market or global allocation. Your emergency savings, debt, other investments and ability to continue contributions during a downturn matter as much as the fund label.
Step-by-step: buying a fund for indirect Microsoft exposure
- Define the exposure you actually want. Decide whether Microsoft should be a modest by-product of broad diversification, a larger technology tilt or a small part of a global portfolio.
- List the accounts you can use. Check your taxable brokerage, IRA, 401(k) or other account for ETF and mutual-fund availability, contribution rules and transaction charges.
- Shortlist funds with the same objective. Compare an S&P 500 fund with another S&P 500 fund, rather than comparing its fee with a fund tracking a completely different index.
- Open the current provider documents. Record the expense ratio, number of holdings, Microsoft weight, index methodology, distribution policy and holdings date. Use the exact ticker and fund name.
- Review total costs. Include the expense ratio, bid-ask spread, commissions if any, account fees, advisory charges and taxes on distributions. A low published expense ratio does not eliminate every cost.
- Place the order appropriately. ETFs trade intraday at a market price that can be above or below NAV; a limit order can specify the maximum price you will pay, but it may not execute. Mutual funds generally accept orders priced at the next end-of-day NAV.
- Verify the completed trade. Confirm the ticker, number of shares or dollar amount, execution price, settlement details and whether dividends are set to reinvest.
- Document your rationale. Note the target allocation, account, purchase date and holdings source. This helps you distinguish a deliberate allocation change from a reaction to a headline.
Trading, pricing and tax considerations
ETF pricing
An ETF can be bought or sold while the market is open. Its quoted price changes continuously and may differ slightly from NAV because of supply, demand, market conditions and the liquidity of the underlying securities. A spread between the bid and ask is an implicit trading cost.
Mutual-fund pricing
Most mutual-fund orders receive one price calculated after the market closes. You cannot choose an intraday execution price, but automatic contributions and dollar-based purchases can be straightforward in retirement plans.
Taxable accounts
Funds can distribute dividends and realized capital gains. You may owe tax even when you did not sell your fund shares, subject to local law and your tax status. Keep records of reinvested distributions because they affect your cost basis.
Tax-advantaged accounts
IRAs and employer plans have their own contribution, withdrawal and distribution rules. The account may defer or change taxation, but it does not change the fund’s underlying Microsoft exposure or investment risk. Consult the plan documents and a qualified tax professional for personal advice.

Risks and common mistakes
Assuming indirect means risk-free
Diversification reduces the impact of one company’s problems; it cannot prevent an equity fund from losing value. Microsoft, the technology sector, the U.S. market and global markets can all decline.
Using an old holdings percentage
The 4.91%, 5.62% and 4.36% figures above are tied to March 31 or September 28, 2026 dates and specific funds. Prices and index rebalancing can change weights quickly. Check the latest holdings before relying on any percentage.
Buying a look-alike product
Funds with similar names can have different indexes, income strategies, derivatives, fees and risks. Confirm the legal fund name and prospectus rather than inferring the strategy from a ticker family.

A portfolio can become technology-heavy without any single fund appearing extreme. Review the combined top holdings of every ETF, mutual fund and target-date product you own.
Chasing the highest Microsoft weight
A higher Microsoft percentage increases sensitivity to Microsoft’s results and valuation. It does not guarantee higher returns. The choice should reflect your diversification goal and ability to withstand losses.
Expecting the fund to track Microsoft
Microsoft’s stock can rise while a fund falls if other holdings decline, or Microsoft can fall while the fund rises because the rest of the portfolio performs well. Indirect exposure is intentionally not the same as owning MSFT.
How to monitor the investment after purchase
- Review the fund, not daily headlines. Check the provider’s fact sheet and holdings file on a schedule appropriate to your plan, such as quarterly, and note the publication date.
- Watch the allocation. Recalculate how much of your overall portfolio is exposed to Microsoft and large technology companies after market movements and new contributions.
- Rebalance by rule. If your allocation moves materially away from your chosen target, use contributions or carefully planned sales to restore it, considering taxes and account rules.
- Recheck costs and availability. Employer plans can change menus, share classes and administrative fees. Brokerage pricing and fund expense ratios can also change.
- Update the decision when circumstances change. A shorter time horizon, new financial obligations or a different risk capacity can justify changing the fund mix even if Microsoft’s business outlook has not changed.
What this approach cannot provide
No fund offers guaranteed Microsoft performance, guaranteed capital preservation or a way to remove all technology exposure while still tracking an index that contains Microsoft. Broad funds lower single-company risk but still hold Microsoft in proportion to their index methodology. Concentrated funds increase the potential impact of Microsoft and its peers. The most suitable route is therefore the one whose diversification, costs, account access and risk level you can maintain through both rising and falling markets.
