The practical way to invest in artificial intelligence without choosing individual companies is to use funds. Keep a diversified broad-market mutual fund or ETF as the portfolio core, then add a smaller AI-themed ETF only if you accept greater concentration, valuation, sector and technology risk. ETFs trade throughout the exchange day at market prices; mutual funds transact once daily at their next calculated net asset value (NAV). In either case, read the current prospectus, holdings, expenses and risk disclosures before buying.

What investing in AI through a fund actually means

A mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) pools money from many investors and uses it to buy a portfolio of securities. That structure can spread your exposure across companies instead of tying the result to one stock, but the label on a fund does not guarantee broad diversification. A thematic fund may hold a relatively small group of companies, give large weights to a few issuers or concentrate in one industry.

There are two separate decisions. First, decide how much of your overall portfolio should be exposed to the growth of AI. Second, decide whether that exposure belongs in a broad-market fund, a dedicated AI fund or a combination. A diversified core can provide exposure to companies that benefit from AI without requiring you to identify the eventual winners. A thematic allocation is more targeted, but its performance can diverge sharply from the wider market.

The main routes to AI exposure without stock picking

1. Use a broad-market index fund as the core

A total-market or large-company index fund may already own firms that design software, supply chips, operate data centers or deploy machine learning in their businesses. You do not have to predict which application, supplier or platform will dominate. The trade-off is that AI may represent only part of the fund, so the investment will not behave like a pure AI bet.

This approach generally gives you the widest company diversification and avoids relying on a specialized definition of AI. It also limits the risk that a single theme falls out of favor. Check the fund’s actual sector weights: a broad technology-heavy index can still be more concentrated than its name suggests.

2. Add an AI-themed ETF as a satellite position

An AI ETF selects companies according to an index methodology or an active manager’s definition of AI. Holdings can include direct AI developers, cloud and software providers, semiconductor and storage suppliers, data businesses, robotics companies and firms adopting AI in their products or operations. This creates more visible AI exposure than a broad-market fund, but it also increases thematic risk.

Treat this type of fund as a satellite allocation around a diversified core rather than assuming that a long list of AI-related holdings makes it equivalent to a total-market fund. Read the number of holdings, the largest position weights, sector limits and the fund’s legal diversification status.

3. Choose a diversified technology or innovation fund

Some technology or innovation funds include AI alongside cybersecurity, cloud computing, digital payments, robotics or other emerging technologies. They can reduce dependence on one narrow AI definition, but their returns will also reflect the non-AI themes and the fund’s technology-sector concentration. Compare the mandate and current holdings rather than inferring exposure from the name.

ETF versus mutual fund: the mechanics that affect your result

Feature ETF Mutual fund
How you trade Retail investors buy and sell shares through a brokerage account during exchange hours. You submit an order to the fund or a brokerage; it executes at the next calculated NAV.
Price Market price can be above or below the fund’s intraday NAV. The bid-ask spread is an additional trading cost. Orders receive the next NAV, so there is no intraday market-price trading.
Minimums Usually the price of one share, subject to the broker’s fractional-share rules and any account minimum. May have an investment minimum or account requirement stated in its prospectus.
Ongoing costs Expense ratio plus any commission, spread and possible tax costs from portfolio turnover. Expense ratio and any purchase, redemption or account fees, plus possible tax costs from turnover.
Best fit Investors who want exchange trading, limit orders or portability across brokers. Investors who prefer automatic contributions and once-daily pricing.

Neither structure is automatically safer. The portfolio, mandate, cost and concentration determine most of the investment risk. A low trading cost cannot compensate for an unsuitable or highly concentrated portfolio.

How AI funds define their opportunity

AI developers

These are companies whose primary products include machine-learning models, software tools, applications or services sold as AI capabilities. Their results may be sensitive to research breakthroughs, customer adoption, computing costs, intellectual-property disputes and competition.

AI enablers

Enablers provide the infrastructure that makes AI possible: semiconductors, networking, storage, cloud capacity, data platforms, software tooling and specialized services. Their revenue may benefit from AI investment even when they do not sell an end-user AI application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AI adopters

Adopters integrate AI into products or internal operations. A company can therefore have meaningful AI exposure without being classified as an AI developer. Adoption may improve productivity, but the financial benefit depends on implementation cost, regulation, customer willingness to pay and whether competitors receive the same advantage.

Big-data, robotics and adjacent technology

Some methodologies include data analytics, automation, robotics or other technologies considered complementary to AI. Review the index rules or active process to see whether these categories are central or incidental. Two funds marketed as AI products can have materially different portfolios.

Documented fund examples and what their documents reveal

The following examples illustrate how to read a fund document; they are not a ranking or a recommendation. Fund terms, holdings and expenses can change, so use the latest prospectus and shareholder report when making a decision.

Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF (AIQ) Rules-based ETF seeking to track the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index. The index covers AI developers, AI-as-a-service providers and AI hardware, including semiconductors and storage. The April 1, 2024 SEC-filed summary prospectus states that at least 80% of total assets are invested in index securities. Total annual fund operating expenses are 0.68% according to Global X Funds’ 2024 prospectus.
Alger AI Enablers & Adopters ETF (ALAI) Actively managed ETF. The April 30, 2026 SEC-filed prospectus says it normally invests at least 80% of assets in companies expected to benefit from AI. Separates AI Enablers— infrastructure, hardware, software and services—from AI Adopters, which integrate AI into products or operations. The prospectus identifies the fund as non-diversified and says it may place a substantial portion of assets in a smaller number of issuers. Portfolio turnover was 194.32% in the most recent fiscal year reported in that prospectus.

AIQ’s 80% policy describes how much of the portfolio must follow its index; it does not tell you how many companies the index owns or how large the biggest positions are. ALAI’s 80% policy describes the type of companies it normally seeks, while its non-diversified classification is an explicit warning that issuer-specific risk can be higher. The 194.32% turnover figure indicates that the manager traded portfolio holdings extensively during the stated fiscal year; turnover can increase transaction costs and taxable distributions in a taxable account, although the effect depends on the fund’s actual gains and distributions.

How to compare an AI fund before buying

Measure breadth and concentration

  • Count current holdings and inspect the ten largest positions.
  • Check the maximum position size, sector weights and exposure to one country or industry.
  • Determine whether the fund is legally diversified or explicitly non-diversified.
  • Look for overlapping holdings with your existing broad-market funds; owning the same large companies in several funds does not create as much diversification as the fund count suggests.

Understand index rules versus active management

An index fund follows published inclusion, weighting and rebalancing rules. That makes the process more predictable, but it will not avoid a falling sector if the rules keep it in the index. An active fund gives a manager discretion to choose enablers, adopters or other companies and to change positions. Examine the manager’s stated process, permitted securities, turnover and decision limits rather than assuming active management will reduce risk.

Compare the complete cost

The expense ratio is deducted from fund assets and reduces returns. For scale, an annual expense ratio of 0.68% is approximately $68 per year on a constant $10,000 balance before compounding and market changes; the actual dollar amount varies with the balance and is not a guaranteed charge. Also account for the brokerage spread, commissions if any, bid-ask liquidity, redemption or account fees, portfolio turnover and taxes in a taxable account.

Check geography and liquidity

Review the country breakdown and currency exposure. A fund can own domestic companies, foreign companies or both, and its trading volume can vary substantially. A wider spread makes a market order more expensive, particularly during volatile periods. A limit order can control the maximum purchase price, but it may not execute.

Read the risk section, not just the marketing description

Prospectuses identify risks such as technology obsolescence, regulation, cybersecurity, intellectual-property disputes, semiconductor supply cycles, high valuations, foreign-market exposure and small-company volatility. The risk section also states whether derivatives, borrowing or other strategies are permitted.

A practical implementation process

  1. Set the portfolio role. Decide whether AI is a core objective or a satellite theme. A broad-market fund can be the core; a dedicated AI ETF is generally the more concentrated component.
  2. Write a target allocation. Choose a percentage range you can hold through a prolonged period of underperformance. Do not let a rising theme determine the allocation after the fact.
  3. List existing exposures. Add the AI-related holdings already present in workplace plans, broad-market funds and other accounts. This reveals whether a new ETF would simply increase the weight of companies you already own.
  4. Gather current documents. Download the latest prospectus, shareholder report, holdings file and fee schedule. The fund name alone does not establish diversification, costs or the current portfolio.
  5. Compare at least two candidates on the same date. Record holdings, largest position, sector and country weights, expense ratio, turnover, index or active method, assets and trading spread.
  6. Open or use a brokerage account for an ETF. Confirm that the account supports the exchange and security, decide whether to use a market or limit order, and review the estimated spread before submitting.
  7. Place the order and verify execution. Check the fill price, quantity and commission. An ETF trade can execute at a price different from the last quote, especially when markets move quickly.
  8. Automate and rebalance. Schedule contributions where available. Rebalance at a defined interval or when the position moves outside your target range instead of reacting to headlines.
  9. Review documents annually and after major changes. Recheck the mandate, holdings, expenses, turnover and concentration. A fund can change its portfolio or index methodology while retaining a familiar ticker.

Costs, taxes and turnover you should not overlook

Expense ratios compound over time because the fee is removed from assets each year. Compare like with like: an index fund’s stated expense ratio may be lower than an actively managed fund’s, but trading spreads and tax consequences still matter. A fund with a higher fee could have a different mandate, yet a higher fee does not prove better AI exposure or better future returns.

Turnover measures how much of a portfolio was replaced during a period. High turnover can create brokerage costs inside the fund and may realize gains that are distributed to shareholders in taxable accounts. The 194.32% turnover reported for ALAI’s most recent fiscal year is a historical figure from its April 30, 2026 prospectus, not a promise that future turnover will be the same. Tax treatment depends on your jurisdiction, account type, holding period and the fund’s distributions; consult a qualified tax professional for personal advice.

Risks specific to an AI theme

Concentration can hide behind diversification language

Owning dozens of securities is not the same as owning unrelated businesses. AI funds may hold companies that depend on the same cloud customers, chip suppliers, capital-spending cycle or regulatory outcome. A non-diversified fund can add direct issuer risk on top of that shared theme.

Expectations and valuation can move faster than earnings

Investor enthusiasm can push prices ahead of measurable cash flows. If adoption takes longer, margins disappoint or financing costs rise, a thematic fund can fall even when the long-term technology remains important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Technology and policy can change the winners

New model architectures, open-source software, export controls, privacy rules, copyright decisions or energy constraints can shift advantage between developers, enablers and adopters. A static index may continue holding a category after its economics change; an active manager may trade more frequently in response.

Correlation with your existing portfolio

Large technology companies often appear in both broad-market and AI funds. Calculate the combined weight rather than treating each fund as an independent bet. Rebalancing can prevent a theme from becoming the unintended majority of your equity exposure.

Protect yourself from AI-investment fraud

AI’s popularity has created a powerful marketing hook for scams. Regulators warn about unregistered platforms, guaranteed-return claims and pump-and-dump promotions. Be skeptical of testimonials, secret algorithms, urgent deadlines, requests to send money to a personal wallet and claims that an automated system cannot lose.

The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy, NASAA and FINRA state: “Be cautious about using AI-generated information to make investment decisions or to attempt to predict changes in the stock market’s direction or in the price of a security.” Use AI tools, if at all, to organize questions and documents—not to treat a generated prediction as due diligence.

A decision framework for different investors

Your priority More suitable starting point What to verify
Maximum diversification and simple maintenance A broad-market mutual fund or ETF. Overall holdings, technology weight, expense ratio and overlap with other accounts.
More targeted AI exposure with a rules-based process An AI index ETF such as the documented AIQ example. Index methodology, number of holdings, largest weights, 80% policy, expenses and spread.
Manager-selected exposure to infrastructure and users of AI An actively managed fund such as the documented ALAI example. Manager process, non-diversified status, turnover, largest positions and expenses.
Automatic contributions at one daily price A mutual fund that accepts your contribution schedule. Minimum investment, transaction fees, purchase restrictions and NAV timing.
Intraday orders and portability between brokers An ETF in a brokerage account. Liquidity, bid-ask spread, order type and commission schedule.

Checklist before you submit an order

  • Can you explain in one sentence how the fund gets AI exposure?
  • What are the current number of holdings and the five largest weights?
  • Is the fund diversified or non-diversified?
  • What are the expense ratio, turnover and any shareholder or brokerage fees?
  • Which countries, sectors and currencies are represented?
  • Does the fund duplicate a large position you already own?
  • How much could you lose without abandoning your long-term plan?
  • Have you read the latest prospectus and shareholder report rather than relying on an old fund description?
  • Are you buying through a registered broker or adviser, with no guaranteed-return promise?

The most durable approach is to make diversification the default and use AI funds only for a deliberate, sized exposure. That keeps your outcome from depending on identifying a single winning company while still allowing you to participate in a broad range of businesses that develop, enable or adopt AI.
