For most small groups, Minecraft Realms or a managed host is the easiest answer. Realms removes server administration, while a paid host usually adds more file access, mod support and configuration. Hosting on your own computer costs no hosting fee but requires an always-on machine, upload capacity, router configuration and ongoing security work. Free third-party tiers exist in reports, but the offer examined here was not independently verified and should be treated as a temporary trial rather than a dependable plan.

Your best choice depends on edition, player count, mods, budget and how much control you want. Java and Bedrock servers use different software and requirements, so decide the edition before paying for anything.

Choose the hosting method that matches your group

Method Typical cost Best for Main trade-off
Minecraft Realms Bedrock: $3.99/month for you plus two players; Realms Plus: $7.99/month for you plus 10 players; Java: $7.99/month for up to 10 simultaneous players Friends who want the least setup Fixed player limits and less file-level control
Managed paid host Reported entry prices range from about $1.80 to $5.99/month, depending on provider, edition and plan Groups needing panels, backups, plugins or modpacks Recurring fee and provider-specific limits
Self-host at home No hosting charge; you pay electricity and your internet service People with an idle computer and networking experience Router, firewall, uptime and security are your responsibility
Mojang dedicated server software Free Owners who want maximum control over files and configuration Manual installation, updates, backups and troubleshooting
Reported free third-party tier One report describes a free 3 GB Bedrock server Testing a short-lived world The offer and terms were not verified on the provider’s own site

If you only need a private world for a few friends, start with Realms or a low-cost managed plan. If you already own a suitable computer and are comfortable changing router settings, self-hosting avoids a monthly bill. For modpacks, plugins or detailed file control, check a managed host’s exact software support before ordering.

Official Minecraft Realms

Realms is Mojang’s managed option: the server runs in the cloud, maintenance is handled for you, and invited players can join without buying their own subscription. It is designed for small, persistent groups rather than large public communities.

Bedrock Realms $3.99 USD per month You plus two players
Realms Plus $7.99 USD per month You plus 10 players

These figures come from Mojang’s Realms page: minecraft.net/en-us/realms. Prices can differ by region and may change, so check the purchase screen for your account before subscribing.

Java Realms

Java Realms is listed at $7.99 USD per month for up to 10 players at the same time. Billing can be a subscription that renews every 30 days or a one-time package covering 30, 90 or 180 days. A 30-day free trial is available in supported circumstances. Invited members do not need their own Realms subscription to play. The Java plan details and billing options are documented at minecraft.wiki/w/Realms.

When Realms is the right answer

  • You want a world that stays online without leaving your computer running.
  • The group fits within the plan’s simultaneous-player cap.
  • You prefer a guided service over command-line setup and router changes.
  • You do not need extensive server-side mods or unrestricted access to every configuration file.

Where Realms is limiting

  • Player caps are fixed by plan.
  • Control over files, server software and advanced networking is narrower than on a self-hosted server.
  • Java and Bedrock players still need compatible editions; Realms does not turn one edition into the other.

Free self-hosting with Mojang’s server software

Mojang publishes dedicated server software at minecraft.net/en-us/download/server for Java Edition and at minecraft.net/en-us/download/server/bedrock for Bedrock Edition. The downloads do not charge a hosting fee, but “free” means you provide the computer, electricity, network connection, maintenance and backups.

Java Edition requirements

The Java server is launched from a .jar file and requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment (JRE). The required Java release follows the Minecraft version: Minecraft 26.1 and later requires Java 25, while Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer requires Java 21. Because both Minecraft and Java requirements change, confirm the server version’s current documentation before installing a runtime.

Minecraft: Switch Edition
  • Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Allocate at least 1 GB of RAM to the server; approximately 2 GB is a practical starting reservation for a small server.
  • Reserve at least 5 GB of disk space. The initial server files are small, but world data, logs, backups and additional content grow over time.
  • The server can use more than one CPU core for some work, but typical guidance places effective use at about three cores at most for a small installation.

These are starting requirements, not a guarantee for a particular modpack or player count. Large worlds, view distance, simultaneous players and mods can require substantially more memory and storage.

Bedrock Dedicated Server requirements

Bedrock Dedicated Server is distributed as a zip archive, so there is no traditional installer step. Mojang provides release and preview builds for Windows and Linux. The preview server is not compatible with the full release of Bedrock Edition; everyone joining must use a compatible release track.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Platform Requirement
CPU Intel Core i3-3210, AMD A8-7600 APU or equivalent
Memory 4 GB RAM listed as the minimum
Storage Approximately 180 MB to 1 GB of free space, depending on build and files
Linux Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later; other distributions are not supported
Windows Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later, or Windows Server 2016 or later

Bedrock’s requirements are lighter in some respects, but the supported operating-system list is specific. Do not assume that a different Linux distribution will work simply because its hardware is fast enough. Education Edition has a separate dedicated-server requirement page and should not be used as a specification for standard Java or Bedrock servers.

How to self-host a Minecraft server at home

Home hosting is practical when you can leave a computer powered on and your internet connection has reliable upload capacity. The exact menus vary by router and operating system, but the process follows the same sequence.

  1. Pick the edition and server build. Java players need the Java server; Bedrock players need Bedrock Dedicated Server. Keep every player on a compatible game version.
  2. Prepare the machine. Use a supported operating system, install required updates and create a dedicated folder for the server. Keep several gigabytes free for world growth and backups.
  3. Install the runtime or extract the archive. For Java, install the JRE version required by your Minecraft release and launch the server jar. For Bedrock, extract the downloaded zip and run the server executable.
  4. Accept the applicable license terms. Java installations commonly create an EULA file on first launch; read and accept it according to Mojang’s instructions before running the server again.
  5. Set world and access options. Configure the world name, difficulty, game mode and whitelist. A whitelist prevents unknown accounts from joining while you are testing.
  6. Allow the server through the local firewall. Create a narrowly scoped rule for the server application rather than disabling the firewall entirely.
  7. Configure router access for outside players. Players on the same home network may connect locally, but people elsewhere generally need a router port-forwarding rule or a tunneling service. Use the port shown in the server configuration and forward only that service to the server computer.
  8. Give friends a stable address. Residential public IP addresses can change. A dynamic DNS service can provide a hostname that updates when the address changes; otherwise you must tell players the new address after each change.
  9. Test in stages. First connect from the host computer, then from another device on the home network, and finally ask a friend outside the network to test external access.
  10. Automate care. Schedule world backups, monitor disk space, restart after updates and keep the server software, operating system and router firmware patched.

Home-hosting security checklist

  • Enable a whitelist and remove inactive accounts.
  • Use strong, unique administrator credentials and do not share console access.
  • Keep the server and operating system updated; do not run an obsolete build because a mod or plugin requires it without assessing the security risk.
  • Back up the world to a different disk or computer. A backup stored only beside the live world will be lost with the machine.
  • Expose only the Minecraft service, not remote-desktop or file-sharing services.
  • Use a tunnel only from a reputable provider and understand its latency, bandwidth and account limits.

Opening a service to the internet exposes part of your home network. If you cannot identify which router rule, firewall rule and process are accepting connections, a managed host or Realms is safer and less work.

Managed paid hosting

A managed host rents an always-on server and provides a web panel for common tasks such as selecting a version, uploading a world, changing settings and installing supported mods or plugins. You trade a monthly fee for simpler networking and provider-maintained hardware.

Reported entry prices

Provider Reported starting price Important qualification
GravelHost From about $1.80/month for entry Bedrock plans Price reported by a listicle; confirm current edition, memory and billing term
Shockbyte From $2.50/month in one list and $3.99/month in another The difference may reflect different plans or regions; verify the exact configuration
BisectHosting About $2.99/month in one list and $5.99/month in another Cited for more than 2,300 modpacks; price depends on plan and offer

These prices were reported by review and listicle pages rather than independently confirmed provider checkout pages. They may include promotional terms, a particular billing cycle, limited memory or a specific region. Before paying, check the provider’s current pricing page for RAM, CPU allocation, storage, backups, renewal price, cancellation rules and whether your chosen Java version, Bedrock build, modpack or plugin is supported.

What to compare in a paid plan

  • Memory and CPU allocation: A low price is not useful if the plan cannot run your player count or modpack.
  • Edition support: Confirm whether the plan runs Java, Bedrock or both, and whether switching editions is possible.
  • Mod and plugin workflow: Look for the exact loader or modpack catalogue you need. “Mod support” does not mean every mod is available.
  • Storage and backups: Check backup frequency, retention and whether restoring a backup costs extra.
  • File access: Determine whether you receive a file manager, FTP or another way to download the complete world.
  • Location and latency: Select a data-center region close to most players when the provider offers a choice.
  • Renewal pricing: Distinguish an introductory price from the recurring rate.
  • Support and migration: Confirm how quickly support responds and whether you can upload an existing world.

Free third-party tiers: useful for testing, risky for permanence

One review reports a permanently free 3 GB Bedrock server with no credit card and renewal roughly every couple of days. That claim was not verified on the provider’s own page, so availability, limits and renewal conditions are uncertain. Treat such an offer as a temporary experiment: keep a downloadable copy of the world, expect sleep or deletion policies, and never make it the only copy of a world your group values.

Java or Bedrock: decide before you choose a host

Question Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Server software Mojang Java server jar; requires a compatible JRE Bedrock Dedicated Server zip for supported Windows or Ubuntu versions
Version requirement highlighted here Java 25 for Minecraft 26.1+; Java 21 for 1.20.5+ Use a server build compatible with the clients; preview and full-release tracks are separate
Typical control Broad ecosystem of plugins, mods and configuration tools Lighter official server, with different add-on and hosting support
Hardware starting point 1 GB minimum allocation, about 2 GB for a small server, 5 GB disk recommended 4 GB RAM minimum listed; 180 MB–1 GB storage listed
Best fit Players using Java on computers who want extensive customization Cross-device Bedrock groups using supported consoles, mobile or Windows clients

Edition compatibility is a hard constraint. A Java-only server cannot be joined by Bedrock clients, and a Bedrock server does not provide Java mod compatibility. Choose the edition your group already owns and verify every host’s edition label before purchase.

Decision guide by situation

A few friends, no technical setup

Choose Realms. Use Bedrock Realms at $3.99/month for you plus two players, Realms Plus at $7.99/month for you plus 10, or Java Realms at $7.99/month for up to 10 simultaneous players. The 30-day Java trial, where offered, lets a group test the workflow before paying.

Mods, plugins or a larger custom world

Compare managed plans by memory, storage, loader and documented modpack support rather than headline price. A provider cited for more than 2,300 modpacks may be attractive, but confirm that your specific pack and Minecraft version are available and that you can export the world.

You need the lowest possible cost

Start with self-hosting if you have suitable hardware. A reported free Bedrock tier can be tested separately, but keep independent backups and do not assume the offer will remain available.

You want a public community server

Neither small Realms plans nor an underpowered home computer is automatically suitable. Evaluate scalable resources, moderation tools, backups, abuse handling, uptime expectations and the provider’s acceptable-use rules before opening the server publicly.

Troubleshooting common hosting problems

Friends cannot connect from outside your home

  • Confirm the server is running and accepts local connections.
  • Check that the operating-system firewall allows the server process.
  • Verify the router forwards the configured server port to the correct computer’s local address.
  • Check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound forwarding; a tunnel or managed host may be required.
  • If the public IP changed, update your dynamic DNS record or send the new address.

The server stops or becomes laggy

  • Check available RAM, CPU load and disk space while players are online.
  • Lower view or simulation distance and remove unnecessary background programs.
  • Review mods and plugins for version compatibility.
  • Move to a stronger paid plan or newer machine if the workload consistently exceeds available resources.

Players receive a version or edition error

  • Confirm every client and the server use the same release family.
  • Do not mix Bedrock preview software with full-release clients.
  • For Java, install the runtime required by the exact Minecraft server version.
  • For modded Java, ensure the loader and mod versions match on both the server and clients.

A world is lost or corrupted

Stop the server, preserve the current files for diagnosis and restore the newest known-good backup. Do not overwrite the only copy with an automatic restart. After recovery, schedule backups to a separate location and periodically download a copy from a managed host.

Final recommendation

Use Realms when convenience and a small private group matter most. Choose a managed paid host when you need plugins, modpacks, file access or more control than Realms provides. Self-host with Mojang’s free software when you have suitable hardware and are willing to manage networking and security. Consider reported free third-party offers experimental only, because their terms were not verified and may change without notice.
