You can reduce Bitcoin’s downside without liquidating your coins by adding an offsetting position: buy put options for a defined price floor, build a collar by selling a call to help pay for that put, or short Bitcoin futures for a more linear hedge. Futures-based exchange-traded products (ETPs) and, where available, listed options on a spot Bitcoin ETP can provide a brokerage-account route, but they introduce tracking, fee and liquidity differences.
The right choice depends on how much BTC you need to protect, the dates that matter, how much upside you are willing to give up, and whether you can meet margin and derivatives requirements. No single hedge ratio is universally correct. Size the hedge deliberately, verify the contract terms and registration status of the provider, and treat every hedge as a risk-management trade rather than a risk-free substitute for holding Bitcoin.
What a Bitcoin hedge actually does
A hedge is a position that tends to gain value when your existing Bitcoin exposure loses value. It is not the same as selling BTC, and it does not remove every risk. A hedge can reduce price losses while adding option premium, futures margin, basis risk, expiration dates, tax complexity and, in some cases, a cap on your upside.
Recommended Free Tools
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes futures and options as tools for people who own virtual currency and want protection against potential losses. Its warning is equally important: “Regulated doesn’t mean risk-free.” Bitcoin remains highly volatile, and leverage can magnify both gains and losses.

Your unhedged position is usually called the underlying or spot exposure. The hedge is the offsetting position. If you own 1 BTC and buy protection equivalent to 1 BTC, you have attempted a 100% notional hedge, but the result may be less than 100% because the instruments can move differently, expire at different times or use different contract sizes.
Compare the main ways to hedge
| Method | Downside behavior | Main cost or risk | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protective put | Creates a floor near the strike for the option term while retaining upside above the premium paid | Upfront premium, time decay and implied-volatility pricing | You want explicit, defined protection and still want uncapped upside |
| Collar | Put protects below its strike; sold call limits gains above its strike | Lower net premium, but capped upside and assignment or expiration mechanics | You can surrender some upside to reduce the insurance cost |
| Short Bitcoin futures | Approximately linear gains as Bitcoin falls and losses as it rises | Margin, leverage, basis, expiration, roll and liquidity risk | You need a measurable hedge for a specific horizon and understand futures operations |
| Futures-based ETP | Indirect short or inverse exposure, depending on the product | Roll costs, management fees and tracking differences from spot Bitcoin | You need a brokerage-accessible implementation and accept imperfect tracking |
| Spot Bitcoin ETP plus listed puts | Security exposure is paired with an option overlay where options are listed | Option premium, bid-ask spreads, ETP fees and product availability | Your account cannot hold coins directly but can trade the relevant listed securities |
The comparison is about the hedge instrument, not a recommendation to trade any particular product. Availability, contract specifications and investor eligibility vary by jurisdiction and account type.
Protective puts: the clearest downside floor
How a put works
Buying a put gives you the right, but not the obligation, to sell the underlying at a specified strike price by the option’s expiration. In the Bitcoin futures options described by CME, the option gives the buyer the right to buy or sell one underlying cryptocurrency futures contract at a specified strike and future date. Those cryptocurrency options are European-style, meaning they can be exercised only on the last trading day.
For a Bitcoin holder, a put is comparable to insurance. You pay a premium up front. If Bitcoin falls below the strike, the put’s value generally rises and offsets part of the loss in your BTC. If Bitcoin stays above the strike, the put may expire unused and the premium is the cost of protection.
What determines the cost
- Strike: A strike closer to the current Bitcoin price generally provides more immediate protection and usually costs more than a far-out-of-the-money strike.
- Expiration: A longer protection period generally costs more because it covers more time for a large move to occur.
- Implied volatility: When option markets price in larger expected moves, puts can become expensive even if Bitcoin has not fallen yet.
- Contract size and multiplier: The option must cover the amount of BTC you actually own. One contract may represent a full-size or Micro Bitcoin futures contract, so read the specification rather than assuming a one-contract-to-one-BTC match.
- Liquidity: Wide bid-ask spreads can make the effective premium higher when you enter or exit.
Illustrative example
Assume, purely as an illustration, that you own 1 BTC purchased at $60,000 and buy a put with a $55,000 strike for a $2,400 premium. If Bitcoin falls to $40,000 at expiration and the option covers exactly 1 BTC, the put has approximately $15,000 of intrinsic value before fees and settlement effects. Your BTC has lost about $20,000 from $60,000, so the option offsets roughly $15,000; the $2,400 premium remains a known cost. If Bitcoin finishes above $55,000, the put may expire worthless and your effective result is the BTC return minus the premium.
This example does not quote a live market price and does not account for contract multipliers, taxes, commissions, spreads or the option’s mark-to-market value before expiration. It demonstrates the shape of the payoff, not a promised return.
When a put is preferable
A put fits a known risk window: an upcoming cash need, a vesting date, a tax payment or a period when you cannot tolerate a large drawdown but still want to participate in a rally. It is also the most straightforward choice when your priority is a defined worst-case price for the hedged amount.
The trade-off is that you must keep renewing the hedge if the risk window continues. Repeatedly buying puts can create substantial premium drag, particularly when implied volatility is elevated. A put also protects only the amount and dates specified by its contract; excess BTC, a different expiration or a different settlement reference can remain exposed.

Collars: exchange some upside for cheaper protection
Structure
A collar combines a long put with a short call on a matching amount and expiration. The put establishes a downside floor. Selling the call brings in premium that can partly or, in some market conditions, nearly offset the put premium. In exchange, gains above the call strike are surrendered, and the short call creates assignment or settlement obligations under its contract rules.
Illustrative collar
Suppose the same hypothetical 1 BTC position is near $60,000. You buy a $55,000 put for $2,400 and sell a $70,000 call for $1,600, producing a net premium of $800 before fees. If Bitcoin falls below $55,000 at expiration, the put offsets losses below that level. If Bitcoin finishes between $55,000 and $70,000, the BTC position participates in that range, less the net premium. If Bitcoin rises above $70,000, the short call can require delivery or cash settlement according to the contract, limiting the upside on the hedged amount.
The strikes do not have to be equally distant from the current price. Choosing a lower put strike reduces cost but leaves a larger initial loss unprotected. Choosing a higher call strike preserves more upside but usually produces less premium to finance the put. Compare the complete payoff at expiration rather than selecting a strike solely because the net premium appears low.

- Decide the maximum price you are willing to give up on the hedged BTC.
- Confirm whether the call is cash-settled or physically settled and how assignment works.
- Check whether the put and call have identical expirations, contract multipliers and underlying references.
- Plan what you will do if Bitcoin approaches the call strike before expiration; closing, rolling or allowing settlement can have different costs.
- Include both legs’ bid-ask spreads and commissions in the net-premium calculation.
A collar is not “free insurance.” It replaces part of the cash premium with a contingent obligation to surrender upside, and the short call can create losses relative to an unhedged position during a strong rally.
Short Bitcoin futures: a linear hedge with operational demands
How the offset works
Shorting a Bitcoin futures contract creates a position that generally gains when the futures price falls and loses when it rises. If your spot BTC declines and the futures contract moves down by a similar amount, the futures profit can offset part of the spot loss. Unlike a put, a futures hedge does not have a built-in maximum cost: a sharp Bitcoin rally can produce large losses on the short futures position.
Futures are leveraged instruments. You post margin rather than the full notional value, and the position is marked to market. A losing short can require additional funds even while your BTC is losing value. If you cannot meet a margin call, the position may be liquidated at an unfavorable time.
Basis and expiration risk
The price difference between your spot Bitcoin and the futures contract is the basis. It can widen or narrow because futures include financing expectations, market demand and contract-specific liquidity. A short futures position therefore may not offset your spot position dollar for dollar on every day.
Futures also expire. If your risk period extends beyond expiration, you must close or roll the contract. Rolling means buying back the expiring contract and selling a later one; the price difference, commissions and spread affect the hedge. A market in contango, where later contracts cost more than near contracts, can make repeated rolls expensive for a short or long strategy depending on the direction and product structure.

Contract sizing
Start with the contract’s notional multiplier, not the number of contracts. If one contract represents 5 BTC and you own 1 BTC, one short contract would substantially over-hedge you. If a Micro contract represents a smaller amount, it may allow a closer match. The exact multiplier, tick value, initial margin, maintenance margin, trading hours, settlement method and expiration calendar must come from the exchange and broker’s current specifications.
There is no authoritative universal percentage that tells every Bitcoin holder to hedge a particular fraction. A practical sizing process is to choose the dollar loss you can tolerate over a defined horizon, estimate the notional exposure of one contract, and then stress-test the result for a rally, a drop, a basis change and a margin call. Round down rather than up when a contract would otherwise create a materially larger hedge than your BTC exposure.
When futures are appropriate
Futures can suit an investor who needs a close-to-linear hedge, has reliable liquidity and cash reserves for variation margin, and can monitor the position through expiration. They are poorly suited to a set-and-forget approach. A hedge that appears balanced at entry can become over- or under-hedged as your BTC balance, the futures price and the basis change.
Futures-based ETPs: easier access, imperfect tracking
A futures Bitcoin ETP holds futures contracts rather than Bitcoin itself. Depending on the product, an investor may buy a short or inverse ETP to offset a long BTC position. This can be operationally simpler than opening a futures account, but it is not the same as shorting spot Bitcoin.
The CFTC notes that Bitcoin futures can differ from spot Bitcoin, and that futures-based ETFs can diverge because futures do not track spot exactly, management fees apply and rolling contracts can create contango or a roll premium. An inverse product may also reset its target exposure daily. Over periods longer than one session, compounding can make its return differ substantially from the simple inverse of Bitcoin’s move.
Read the prospectus for the product’s benchmark, reset frequency, leverage, fees, roll policy, creation and redemption process and tax reporting. Compare the ETP’s historical tracking behavior with the risk window you are trying to hedge, but do not assume past tracking will repeat. A futures ETP may be useful when account permissions or operational simplicity matter more than a precise hedge, but its convenience is purchased with another layer of product risk.
Spot Bitcoin ETP exposure plus listed puts
A spot Bitcoin ETP is a security that seeks to reflect Bitcoin’s price through its structure and custody arrangements. The SEC has explained that spot Bitcoin ETPs can provide exposure without some direct risks of transacting on a crypto platform or managing private keys. They remain securities with their own fees, market risks and structural details.

It is simply another long exposure. To protect it, you need an offsetting short position or listed put options on that specific ETP, if an options market exists and your broker permits trading. An option on an ETP is based on the ETP’s share price, not necessarily one BTC, so the number of shares and the option multiplier must be matched to your position.

This approach can fit an account that supports listed equity options but not cryptocurrency futures. Check the option’s exercise style, expiration, deliverable, open interest, spreads and early-assignment rules. The ETP’s management fee and any premium or discount to its underlying value remain part of the exposure you are hedging.
A step-by-step process for designing the hedge
- Define the exposure. Record the BTC amount, acquisition lots, custody location and the price reference you actually need to protect. Include BTC held across wallets, exchanges and ETP shares only if the chosen hedge references the same economic exposure.
- Set the risk window. Choose a specific end date or event, such as a planned sale, tax payment or portfolio review. A hedge without an end date tends to accumulate premium, rolls or monitoring errors.
- Choose the acceptable loss. Decide whether you need a hard floor, a partial offset or only protection against an extreme move. A higher put strike costs more; a lower strike leaves more first-loss exposure.
- Choose the instrument. Use a put for defined downside with retained upside, a collar when you can cap gains, futures for a near-linear offset, or an ETP route when account access makes direct derivatives impractical.
- Match the notional. Multiply contracts or shares by their stated multiplier and reference price. Do not infer coverage from the ticker or from the number of units alone.
- Stress-test outcomes. Calculate the result if Bitcoin falls sharply, rises sharply, remains flat, gaps through your strike, or moves differently from the hedge reference. For futures, include a margin call in the stress test.
- Budget all costs. Include option premium or net collar premium, commissions, spreads, ETP fees, futures funding through margin, potential roll costs and taxes applicable to your jurisdiction.
- Write an adjustment rule. Decide in advance when you will close, roll, resize or allow expiration. Document who has authority to act if the market moves quickly.
- Verify the provider. Confirm that the broker, futures commission merchant, exchange or options venue is authorized for your jurisdiction. The CFTC advises checking registration for anyone offering virtual-currency futures or options.
- Reconcile after execution. Save confirmations, contract identifiers, strikes, expirations, premiums, fees and settlement records. Compare the hedge’s actual notional with your remaining BTC exposure after every material transfer or sale.
Costs, liquidity and settlement details to check
Option costs
Option premium is visible, but the effective cost also includes the spread between the bid and ask, commissions and the value lost to time decay. Near expiration, an option can change value rapidly. Closing an option before expiration may produce a different result from its intrinsic value because implied volatility and remaining time still affect its price.
Futures costs
Futures require margin and may generate daily cash flows. The exchange’s initial and maintenance margin can change, and a broker can impose higher house requirements. Basis movement, commissions, spread, liquidation risk and the cost of rolling all matter. A futures hedge can lose money while your spot position gains if Bitcoin rises strongly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsETP costs
ETPs charge management fees and can track their benchmark imperfectly. Futures products may incur roll effects; inverse products may reset daily; spot products can trade at a premium or discount to their underlying value. Read the current prospectus and exchange data rather than treating an ETP share as a direct coin equivalent.
Settlement and custody
Confirm whether the instrument settles in cash, futures or another deliverable; when settlement occurs; and what happens at expiration. Keep custody of your BTC separate from the hedge records. A hedge does not protect against lost private keys, exchange insolvency, unauthorized transfers or operational failures.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying protection that is too small
A put covering 0.1 BTC cannot fully protect a 1 BTC position. Recalculate the multiplier and deliverable, especially when using Micro contracts or ETP options.
Ignoring the date mismatch
A hedge expiring before the event you care about leaves a gap. Roll or extend it before expiration, and account for the cost of doing so.

Using leverage without a cash reserve
Short futures can require more cash precisely when BTC is falling and your broader finances are under stress. Maintain funds for adverse moves and higher margin requirements, or use a defined-risk option instead.
Assuming a collar is free
The call premium may reduce the put’s cash cost, but the call gives away upside and can create settlement obligations. Model the result above the call strike before entering.
Failing to check liquidity
A theoretical hedge can be expensive to enter or exit in a thin market. Review displayed size, open interest, recent volume and the spread at the time you intend to trade.

Overlooking tax records
Derivatives, ETP transactions and Bitcoin disposals can receive different tax treatment. Keep lot-level records and ask a qualified tax professional in your jurisdiction how premiums, settlements, rolls and constructive-sale or straddle rules may apply.
Choosing by objective
You want a known worst-case price
Start with a protective put whose strike and expiration match the loss window. Accept that the premium is paid whether or not the protection is used.
You want to reduce the premium
Evaluate a collar. Select the call strike only after deciding how much upside you are genuinely willing to surrender, and verify all assignment and settlement rules.
You need a close-to-linear offset
Consider a short futures position if you can meet margin calls, monitor basis and manage expiration. Match the contract notional conservatively to your BTC amount.
You need to stay inside a securities account
Investigate listed options on an eligible spot Bitcoin ETP or a futures-based ETP, subject to availability and suitability. Compare tracking, fees, liquidity and reset behavior before relying on it as protection.
You cannot tolerate derivatives complexity
A smaller BTC position or partial sale may be more transparent than an improvised hedge. Avoid replacing a known holding risk with a product whose margin, settlement or tracking behavior you do not understand.
What a hedge cannot protect
Price hedges address market movement only. They do not insure against custody loss, phishing, wallet compromise, platform failure, regulatory changes, tax liabilities, network outages or the risk that an exchange or intermediary cannot perform. They also cannot guarantee execution at a displayed price during a fast market. Use separate custody controls, position limits and cash-management practices alongside any market hedge.
Before placing an order, read the current contract or prospectus, confirm registration and account eligibility, and make sure the proposed payoff matches the amount and date you actually need to protect. The simplest valid hedge is usually better than a larger, more leveraged structure whose failure modes you cannot monitor.
