Use this order: inspect Android’s storage breakdown, remove replaceable downloads and offline media, clear app caches (not app storage), then use Google Photos’ device cleanup only after confirming backup. If an app is rarely used, archiving can remove its software while retaining its data. Do not tap Clear storage or Clear data as a general cleanup step: Android says that permanently deletes the app’s data.

Menu names differ between manufacturers and Android versions, so treat the paths below as a map rather than an identical script for every phone. The goal is to remove local copies and temporary files while keeping the information you still need.

What “without losing app data” actually means

Android separates storage from memory. Storage holds persistent files such as photos, downloads and app data; memory is the working space used while programs run. This guide addresses storage that is full, not a phone that is merely slow because memory is busy. Android’s storage guidance is available in Google Android Help.

App controls usually show two different actions:

Action What it removes Risk to local app data When to use it
Clear cache Temporary files Normally preserves accounts, settings and saved content; the app may be slower on its next launch while it rebuilds temporary files When a particular app has accumulated a large cache or is misbehaving
Clear storage or Clear data All data stored by that app on the phone Permanently deletes the app’s local data according to Android Only when you deliberately want a reset and have verified how that app backs up or syncs

“Preserving app data” does not mean every byte must remain on the device. Removing a downloaded film, a duplicate photo or a temporary cache is different from deleting a note database, a game save or an offline document that exists nowhere else. Before deleting anything, identify whether it is a replaceable local copy or the only local copy.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Which cleanup method fits your situation?

The choices below differ in reversibility, backup requirements and whether the result remains available offline. No universal space figure can be promised: the amount recovered depends on your files, apps and usage.

Method App data retained? Backup required first? Offline availability afterward Important limitation
Clear an app’s cache Yes, temporary data only is removed No, although app-specific sync is still wise Usually unchanged; the app may recreate temporary files Some apps quickly rebuild a large cache
Delete Downloads or other known files Unrelated app data is retained Only if the file is not already safely copied or synced Deleted files are not offline You must recognize the file and confirm any copy
Remove offline media in its source app Account and cloud library remain, subject to that service’s design Not usually, but confirm the content can be downloaded again The offline copy is gone Controls vary by media app
Google Photos “Free up space on this device” Apps are unaffected; local photo/video copies are removed Yes, backup must be complete Not in the built-in gallery or offline; viewable in Google Photos and photos.google.com Items newer than 30 days may remain on the phone
Archive an infrequently used app Android retains the app’s data and icon Not a substitute for an app backup The app cannot run until restored Requires supported Android version, hardware and app-store availability
Unused-app optimization Does not manually clear app storage No The app remains installed but background behavior can change Android may remove temporary files, revoke permissions, pause background activity and stop notifications

1. See what is occupying storage

Start with evidence rather than deleting random apps. Open Settings and search for Storage (on some phones, Battery and device care or a similarly named section contains it). Review categories such as apps, images, videos, audio, documents, downloads and system. The exact labels and charts vary by manufacturer and Android release.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Storage, or use the Settings search field for “storage.”
  3. Sort or open the largest category and identify the actual files or apps behind it.
  4. Record anything you cannot replace, such as locally stored recordings, unsynced projects or app databases.

Do not confuse a large “memory” or RAM reading with a full storage drive. Closing recent apps is not the storage cleanup requested here and can make apps reload without reclaiming meaningful persistent space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your phone’s menu does not expose a category or the labels differ substantially, use the manufacturer’s support instructions for that model. The underlying decisions remain the same: remove known local copies, temporary data and replaceable downloads before touching app storage.

2. Clear cache, never app storage, when preserving data matters

Cache is disposable working material: thumbnails, web assets, decoded images and other temporary files. Android describes the distinction plainly: “Clear cache: Deletes temporary data.” Clearing cache can free space without removing the app’s account, settings or local documents. The first launch afterward may be slower because the app recreates what it needs.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Generic path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Apps, Applications or App management.
  3. Select the app that has an unusually large footprint.
  4. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  5. Choose Clear cache. Confirm only that action.

Manufacturers place these controls differently, and some apps expose their own cache-cleaning command. Read the button label carefully. Clear storage, Clear data and similarly worded reset commands are not interchangeable with Clear cache; Android says they permanently delete all app data. That can sign you out, erase offline files, remove unsynced drafts or reset a game.

When clearing cache will not help

  • The reported size is mostly user data, downloads or a media library rather than cache.
  • The app immediately regenerates the same temporary files during normal use.
  • The app stores important content in a private database that is counted as app storage, not cache.

Clear one cache at a time and check the storage screen again. A smaller cache is not automatically better if it causes repeated redownloading over a slow connection or removes useful thumbnails; use it for a targeted space problem, not as a ritual.

3. Move or delete local files and Downloads selectively

Downloaded installers, duplicate documents, exported videos and messaging attachments often provide safer targets than app data. Open the phone’s file manager and inspect Downloads, Documents, Images, Videos and any folders created by apps you recognize.

Use a three-question test for every file

  1. Do I know what this is? Keep unfamiliar files until you identify them; do not delete system folders merely because their names look technical.
  2. Can I get it again? A public installer or a cloud-synced document may be replaceable; an unsynced recording may not be.
  3. Is a verified copy somewhere else? Open the copy or inspect the destination before deleting the phone’s version.

For large files you want to keep, Android documents copying files and folders to a computer over USB before deleting them from the phone. Use a compatible USB data-transfer cable (not every charging-only cable transfers data), connect the phone, unlock it, choose the phone’s File transfer USB mode if prompted, and copy the selected folders. Compatibility depends on the phone and computer.

  1. Connect the unlocked phone to the computer with a data-capable cable.
  2. On the phone’s USB notification, select File transfer or Android Auto only if it provides file access on your device.
  3. On the computer, open the phone’s internal storage and copy the chosen files to a clearly named folder.
  4. Open several copied files, check their sizes and confirm the transfer completed.
  5. Delete the originals from the phone only after that verification, then empty the phone’s file-manager trash if it has one.

The USB method is optional; it is not a requirement to free space. A verified cloud or computer copy is what matters. If a transfer fails, stop and keep the original until you have a readable copy.

4. Remove offline media from the app that downloaded it

Movies, music, podcasts, maps and other offline media can consume several gigabytes while the online library remains intact. Manage these downloads inside the app that created them instead of deleting unfamiliar folders with a file manager.

  1. Open the relevant media app.
  2. Go to Downloads, Offline, Saved or the app’s storage-management screen.
  3. Remove individual items you can stream or download again, or use the app’s “remove all downloads” option only after reviewing its scope.
  4. Return to Android’s Storage screen to confirm the change.

Google’s Android guidance directs users to manage downloaded content in the applicable Google Play media app or through the source app. Removing an offline copy is not the same as deleting a purchase, subscription or cloud library, but each service defines its own retention and redownload rules. If travel or poor connectivity matters, keep the offline files you will actually need.

5. Use Google Photos’ device cleanup only after backup is confirmed

Google Photos can remove local copies of backed-up photos and videos while leaving them viewable in Google Photos and at photos.google.com. The feature is useful when pictures are safely in the cloud but still occupy the phone. It is not a backup button; it is a deletion action that depends on backup having completed.

Verify backup first

  1. Open Google Photos.
  2. Check the account and backup status shown in the app. Resolve any “waiting,” “paused” or “not backed up” items first.
  3. Open a few recent and important photos from the cloud view, preferably on another connection or device, to confirm they are available.

Run the cleanup

  1. In Google Photos, open your profile menu.
  2. Choose Free up space on this device.
  3. Review the items and the amount the app says it can remove.
  4. Confirm only when the backup status is complete and you accept that the phone’s local copies will be deleted.

Google says items removed this way may no longer appear in the phone’s built-in gallery and will not be available offline. They remain accessible in Google Photos or photos.google.com while the account and library are available. Photos and videos less than 30 days old may remain on the device even after the action, so the immediate result can be smaller than the preview suggests. If you edit with an app that expects a local file, download or keep that file before cleanup.

Do not use this feature for folders that have not been included in Photos backup unless you have another verified copy. A visible thumbnail is not proof that the full-resolution original has finished uploading.

6. Archive an infrequently used app instead of uninstalling it

Android’s app-archive feature removes the app’s software while retaining its icon and app data. That can reclaim more than a cache clear without forcing you to set up the app from scratch. Android says support depends on the Android version and hardware; some steps require Android 15 or later. Restoration also requires that the app remain available in the app store on the device.

Check support and archive

  1. Open the app drawer or Settings > Apps and select an app you rarely use.
  2. Look for Archive or an app-info menu offering archiving. If the option is absent, that phone, Android release or app may not support it.
  3. Read the confirmation, paying attention to the retained data and permissions.
  4. Confirm the archive. The icon should remain, usually with an archive indicator.

Restore later

  1. Tap the archived app’s icon when you need it.
  2. Allow Android to download the app again from the on-device app store.
  3. Wait for installation, then open it and verify that the retained data is present.

Do not archive an app that must work without connectivity, is no longer published, or holds data that the app itself does not preserve reliably. Archiving is a space-saving state, not an independent backup.

7. Review Android’s unused-app optimization

Android can optimize apps that have not been used for a long time. Its documented actions include deleting temporary files, revoking permissions, pausing background activity and stopping notifications. This feature is different from manually clearing app storage and can change how a dormant app behaves.

  1. Open Settings and search for unused apps or unused app settings.
  2. Review the list and the optimization status for each app.
  3. Exclude an app that must retain permissions, run in the background or deliver notifications.
  4. Revisit the list after installing an app you use infrequently but still need to remain fully active.

Use this as maintenance for genuinely unused apps, not as a substitute for checking where the storage is actually going. If an app’s local database is valuable, confirm its own backup and sync behavior before changing permissions or background operation.

Backups do not guarantee every app’s data

A Google Account device backup can include apps and app data among other categories, but Google cautions that not all apps can back up or restore every setting and data item. The relevant guidance is in Google’s Android backup and restore help.

Therefore, an enabled device backup is not permission to tap Clear storage. Before deleting local app data:

  • Open the app’s own backup, export or sync settings.
  • Check when the last successful sync occurred and whether it includes the specific records you care about.
  • Look for the developer’s restore instructions, especially for authenticator tokens, games, note databases, editing projects and downloaded documents.
  • Perform a small export or restore test when the data is irreplaceable.

If the app has no documented backup and the data exists only on the phone, preserve it by leaving app storage untouched. Clearing cache is the safer intervention because it targets temporary files.

A conservative cleanup workflow

When you need space quickly but cannot risk app data, follow this order and stop as soon as you have enough room:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Measure: inspect Settings > Storage and identify the largest categories.
  2. Remove obvious replaceables: delete verified duplicates, old installers and files in Downloads that you no longer need.
  3. Transfer keepers: copy large recordings, photos or documents to a computer and verify the copies before deleting originals.
  4. Remove offline media: use the source app’s Downloads or Offline controls.
  5. Clear selected caches: choose Clear cache only on apps with unusually large temporary data.
  6. Clean backed-up photos: use Google Photos’ Free up space on this device only after backup is complete.
  7. Archive dormant apps: use the feature only where the phone, Android version, hardware and app-store availability support it.
  8. Recheck storage: return to the storage screen and confirm which category changed.

Common failure modes and recovery

The phone still reports low storage

Recheck the category totals. A cache clear may have recovered little if videos, downloads or app data are the real consumers. Empty file-manager and Photos trash folders if you intentionally deleted items and understand their recovery window. Restarting may refresh the displayed total, but it does not replace deleting the underlying files.

An app is slow after cache cleanup

This is expected while temporary resources are rebuilt. Open the app on a stable connection and allow it to finish loading. Do not clear storage to “fix” the slowdown unless you have chosen to reset the app and have verified its data backup.

Google Photos removed pictures from the gallery

That is the intended effect of removing device copies. Open Google Photos or photos.google.com to view backed-up items. If a picture is missing there, stop deleting anything else and investigate its backup status; do not assume a gallery thumbnail meant the original was uploaded.

An archived app will not restore

Check the phone’s internet connection and whether the app is still available in the on-device app store. Unsupported Android versions, hardware limitations or an app that has been withdrawn can prevent restoration. Keep critical apps installed and maintain an independent backup of their data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A copied file will not open on the computer

Keep the phone original, reconnect with a data-capable cable, select File transfer, and copy again. Verify file size and openability before deleting anything. A charging-only cable or a locked phone can make a transfer appear successful when no usable copy was created.

What to avoid

  • Do not select Clear storage or Clear data as a generic cleanup command.
  • Do not delete folders you cannot identify merely because they are large.
  • Do not treat a Google Account backup indicator as proof that every app’s settings and data are restorable.
  • Do not run Google Photos’ device cleanup before backup completion.
  • Do not assume an archived app can be restored if it is unavailable in the app store.
  • Do not delete a local file until a copied or synced version has been checked.
