The most reliable way to reduce dependence on AI stocks and mega-cap technology is not to find one replacement winner. It is to spread risk across asset classes, countries, company sizes, investment styles and time horizons, then keep the mix near a target through disciplined rebalancing.
For many investors, that means combining non-U.S. equities, U.S. value and small-cap exposure, high-quality bonds or Treasuries, and—only when appropriate—real estate or commodities. The right allocation depends on your goal, investing horizon, tax situation and ability to tolerate losses. A fund that owns many securities can still be poorly diversified if those securities share the same technology, country or factor exposures.
What diversification actually changes
The SEC defines diversification as spreading money among different investments and asset categories to reduce risk. Diversification cannot prevent losses, but it can keep one company, sector, country or market regime from determining your entire result.
Spread risk across asset classes
Stocks, bonds, cash equivalents, real estate and commodities respond differently to interest rates, inflation, economic growth and investor sentiment. A portfolio made entirely of equities remains exposed to an equity-market drawdown even if it owns thousands of companies. Adding high-quality bonds or Treasury securities introduces a different source of return and risk.

Spread risk within each asset class
Owning several technology-heavy ETFs does not necessarily diversify you. Their top holdings may be the same large U.S. technology companies, and their returns may move together. The SEC cautions that a mutual fund or ETF will not necessarily provide diversification when it is narrowly focused, such as on one industry sector. Check the actual holdings, not just the fund name.
Measure your current dependence before buying anything
Start with an exposure inventory. Use your brokerage statements and fund fact sheets to identify direct holdings, the largest positions in every fund, sector weights, country weights, company-size exposure and bond characteristics.
- List every account and holding. Include taxable accounts, retirement plans, employer stock, cash and guaranteed products.
- Look through each fund. Record its top 10 holdings, technology and communication-services exposure, geographic allocation, market-cap mix and expense ratio.
- Consolidate duplicates. Add the percentage of your portfolio represented by the same company when it appears directly and through multiple funds.
- Separate style exposures. Identify large-cap growth, value, small-cap, dividend, momentum and other factor tilts.
- Map non-equity risks. For bonds, note duration, credit quality, issuer concentration, currency and whether the fund holds government, corporate or municipal debt.
- Compare the result with your goal. A portfolio for a house down payment in three years needs a different risk profile from a retirement portfolio with a 30-year horizon.
This audit often reveals that the problem is overlap rather than the number of tickers. Replacing one narrow technology fund with three similar funds may change the labels while leaving the underlying concentration intact.

International stocks reduce reliance on the U.S. economic and technology cycle. Developed-market funds can provide exposure to Europe, Japan, Canada, Australia and other established markets; emerging-market funds add companies in faster-growing but less mature economies. A broad international allocation can include both, or you can use separate funds to control the split.
Why geography helps
Countries differ in monetary policy, regulation, demographics, commodity exposure, currencies and dominant industries. Markets with larger weights in financials, industrials, health care or consumer companies may behave differently from a U.S. index led by technology firms.
What the historical record does—and does not—say
Vanguard reported that a $100 investment in U.S. stocks 10 years earlier grew to $334 by the end of 2024, an annualized 13% return. A similar investment in non-U.S. stocks ended at $160, an annualized 5% return. This is a historical comparison, not a forecast or a reason to assume international stocks will outperform next.

Risks to check
- Currency risk: A foreign stock can rise in its local currency while the U.S.-dollar value falls.
- Country and political risk: Rules on ownership, taxation, disclosure and capital movement vary.
- Market structure: Some countries have fewer large companies or heavier exposure to banks, commodities or government-linked firms.
- Trading and tax issues: Foreign withholding taxes, wider spreads and different market holidays can affect results.
- Valuation and volatility: Emerging markets can experience larger drawdowns and lower liquidity.
Inspect the fund’s developed/emerging split, country caps, currency treatment, expense ratio and index methodology. International exposure is a diversifier, not a guarantee of lower losses.

Route 2: Tilt toward value and smaller companies
A total-market fund includes small and mid-sized companies, but large companies still dominate its market-cap weighting. If your portfolio is concentrated in large-cap growth, a deliberate allocation to value, small-cap or small-cap-value stocks can counterbalance that exposure.
Value stocks
Value strategies select companies that appear inexpensive relative to measures such as earnings, book value or cash flow. Their sector mix often differs from growth indexes, with more financials, industrials, energy, utilities and consumer businesses. Value can lag for long periods, and a low valuation may reflect genuine business problems.
Small-cap stocks
Smaller companies may have more room to grow and less representation in mega-cap technology indexes. They also tend to have less diversified revenue, thinner trading volume, weaker balance sheets and greater sensitivity to borrowing costs. Small-cap funds can therefore be more volatile than broad large-cap funds.
Questions to ask before using a tilt
- Does the fund screen for profitability, or does it simply buy the cheapest companies?
- How concentrated is it in one sector, country or industry?
- What are its bid-ask spreads, turnover and expense ratio?
- How much of the portfolio is already exposed to small or value companies through existing funds?
- Can you tolerate several years of underperformance relative to a large-cap growth index?
Vanguard’s educational guidance recommends including large-, mid- and small-cap companies and spreading exposure across industries. Treat a style tilt as a long-term risk decision, not a short-term call on which factor will lead next quarter.
Route 3: Use high-quality bonds and Treasury securities
High-quality bonds can provide income and a risk source that differs from equities. U.S. Treasury securities, investment-grade government bonds, and carefully selected corporate or municipal bonds are common building blocks. The SEC lists corporate and municipal bonds, bond funds, money-market funds and U.S. Treasury securities among standard investment choices.

Match duration to the date you need the money
Duration measures sensitivity to interest-rate changes. Shorter-duration bonds generally fluctuate less when rates move, while longer-duration bonds can rise or fall substantially. Money needed within a few years usually calls for less interest-rate risk than money reserved for a distant retirement date.
Control credit risk
Lower-quality or high-yield bonds may behave more like stocks during economic stress because defaults and recession fears rise together. If the objective is stability, prioritize credit quality and understand whether a fund can hold below-investment-grade debt.
Understand the trade-offs
- Interest-rate risk: Bond prices generally fall when market yields rise.
- Inflation risk: Fixed payments may lose purchasing power.
- Credit risk: Corporate and municipal issuers can miss payments.
- Reinvestment risk: Maturing bonds may have to be replaced at lower yields.
- Fund structure: A bond fund has no maturity date for the whole portfolio, so its value continues to fluctuate.
Choose the bond role first—cash reserve, income, volatility control or liability matching—then select duration and credit quality. Do not assume every bond fund will offset an equity sell-off equally.
Route 4: Consider real estate or commodities selectively
The SEC identifies real estate, precious metals and other commodities as additional asset categories. They can provide exposure to rents, property values, inflation-sensitive goods or scarce resources, but they are optional sleeves rather than universal requirements.
Real estate exposure
Public real-estate companies and real-estate investment trusts can provide rental and property exposure through exchange-traded securities. They may be sensitive to interest rates, refinancing costs, local property cycles and specific sectors such as offices, apartments, warehouses or data centers. A narrowly focused property fund can create a new concentration even while reducing technology exposure.
Commodities and precious metals
Commodities may respond to inflation, supply disruptions and global demand rather than corporate earnings. Prices can be extremely volatile, and many commodity products use futures contracts whose returns differ from the spot price because of contract rolls. Precious metals generate no interest or dividends and can remain out of favor for long periods.

Implementation checks
- Review liquidity, spreads, leverage and derivatives use.
- Understand whether the product owns physical assets, operating companies or futures.
- Check fees, tax reporting and account eligibility.
- Set a maximum position before buying; a diversifier can become a new source of concentration.
Route 5: Use a broad-allocation or target-date fund for simplicity
A broad allocation fund can combine domestic and international stocks with bonds in one portfolio. A target-date fund goes further by changing its mix over time, typically reducing stock exposure and increasing bonds as the stated retirement year approaches.

The date in the name is not a promise that the fund will be safe at that point or that two funds with the same date will have the same risk.
Compare these items
- Glide path: When does the fund begin reducing equities, and does the more conservative allocation occur at the target date or years afterward?
- Equity percentage: Compare the stock allocation at the target date and in retirement.
- Underlying holdings: Look for duplicated U.S. mega-cap technology exposure and overlapping international funds.
- Fees: Add the fund’s expense ratio to the costs of its underlying funds.
- Retirement-date assumptions: Check whether the design assumes withdrawals begin at the target year and how long the fund remains invested.
A single fund can simplify maintenance, but convenience does not remove the need to inspect holdings and risk. If you combine a target-date fund with other funds, include all of them in the overlap analysis.
How to build a diversified plan step by step
- Define the job of the money. Write down the goal, target date, expected withdrawals and minimum amount that must remain available.
- Set a risk boundary. Estimate the largest temporary loss you could tolerate without selling in panic. Your capacity for loss depends on your horizon and income; your tolerance is your emotional response. Both matter.
- Choose a core. Use a broad stock-and-bond allocation or separate broad funds. Confirm that the core is not a narrow sector product.
- Add missing exposures. Consider international stocks, value or small-cap stocks, and high-quality bonds only where the inventory shows a gap.
- Decide whether optional sleeves are worthwhile. Add real estate or commodities only if their role, risks and tax treatment are clear.
- Set written target ranges. Record the desired mix and an allowed band for each holding or asset class. Avoid universal percentages copied from someone with a different goal.
- Choose a rebalancing rule. Specify a calendar review, a threshold-based trigger or a combination before markets move.
- Document the reason for every holding. If you cannot explain what risk a position offsets, it may be redundant.
Which route addresses which concentration?
| Route | Primary exposure added | What it can offset | Main risks to examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Developed and emerging-market equities | Non-U.S. countries, currencies and industries | Dependence on the U.S. technology cycle | Currency, country, political, liquidity and valuation risk |
| Value equities | Different valuation and sector characteristics | Large-cap growth and momentum concentration | Long periods of underperformance, sector concentration and weak businesses |
| Small-cap or small-cap-value equities | Smaller companies and earlier-stage businesses | Mega-cap size concentration | Higher volatility, weaker balance sheets and lower liquidity |
| High-quality bonds and Treasuries | Interest income and fixed-income exposure | All-equity portfolio risk | Duration, inflation, credit and reinvestment risk |
| Real estate | Property and rent-related exposure | Some corporate and technology exposure | Interest rates, leverage, property sectors, fees and liquidity |
| Commodities or precious metals | Resources and inflation-sensitive assets | Reliance on corporate earnings | Price volatility, futures-roll effects, storage or product costs and taxation |
| Broad-allocation or target-date fund | Multiple asset classes in one vehicle | Implementation and maintenance burden | Glide path, fees, underlying overlap and assumed retirement date |
Rebalancing without chasing performance
Rebalancing restores your chosen mix after market movements. If technology stocks rise sharply, selling enough of the overweight position—or directing new contributions elsewhere—can return the portfolio to its intended risk level. If international or value stocks fall, rebalancing may require buying them rather than abandoning the strategy.
Investor.gov describes rebalancing as restoring a target allocation. Vanguard President and CIO Greg Davis wrote on March 26, 2024, that rapid changes caused by inflation and higher interest rates reinforced the need to resist chasing performance and to maintain diversification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a practical method
- Calendar method: Review quarterly, semiannually or annually and trade only when needed.
- Threshold method: Rebalance when an allocation moves a specified number of percentage points away from target.
- Cash-flow method: Use contributions, dividends and withdrawals to correct drift before selling.
- Tax-aware method: Prefer tax-advantaged accounts for trades when possible and weigh gains, losses and transaction costs in taxable accounts.
Do not rebalance merely because another asset had the best recent return. The purpose is to control risk, not to forecast the next winner.

Costs, taxes and practical constraints
Every diversifier has a price. Compare expense ratios, bid-ask spreads, commissions, turnover, securities-lending practices and any account-level fees. A low-cost fund with substantial overlap may be less useful than a slightly more expensive fund that fills a genuine gap, but costs compound over time.
In taxable accounts, selling an appreciated technology position can create capital gains. You may be able to redirect dividends and new contributions first, harvest losses where appropriate and spread sales across tax years. Tax rules depend on jurisdiction and personal circumstances; consult a qualified tax professional for decisions that affect your return.
International funds can involve foreign withholding taxes and different reporting. Commodity products, real-estate securities and partnerships may have specialized tax forms or treatment. Verify current rules, fund documents and account eligibility before trading.

Common mistakes when diversifying away from technology
- Replacing one concentration with another: A fund labeled value, dividend, infrastructure or clean energy can still be dominated by a few sectors or companies.
- Counting tickers instead of exposures: Five funds with the same top holdings are one economic bet.
- Assuming international means low risk: Currency and political shocks can make foreign markets volatile.
- Using bonds without checking duration: Long-duration funds can lose significant value when yields rise.
- Chasing the latest laggard: Past underperformance does not guarantee a rebound.
- Ignoring liquidity: Small-cap, emerging-market, real-estate and commodity products may have wider spreads during stress.
- Over-diversifying: A collection of tiny positions can add costs and make the portfolio impossible to monitor.
- Forgetting employer stock and options: These exposures can dominate total wealth even when the investment account looks balanced.
- Trading without a written rule: Emotional decisions often result in buying recent winners and selling diversifiers after they fall.
How to decide what belongs in your portfolio
Use the exposure audit to identify the specific risk you want to reduce. If nearly all equity risk is U.S. large-cap growth, international and value or small-cap funds address different parts of that problem. If your horizon is short or your income is uncertain, high-quality short- or intermediate-duration bonds may matter more than another equity sleeve. If you already own a balanced fund, adding several satellite funds may increase complexity without improving diversification.
Review the plan after major life changes, not after every headline. Recheck fund holdings, fees, glide paths and tax consequences when a fund changes its strategy or when your goal, horizon or ability to bear losses changes. Diversification works best as a deliberate structure that you can maintain through both strong and weak markets.
