If Saudi or Egyptian shares dominate your portfolio, diversify in four directions: reduce dependence on any one company, sector, country and asset class. A practical structure is a broad global core, a deliberately sized Saudi/Egypt satellite, and stabilising holdings such as high-quality bonds, sukuk, money-market funds or cash. The right percentages depend on your time horizon, liabilities, tax residence, base currency, risk capacity and existing holdings; no single Saudi or Egypt allocation is suitable for everyone.
Diversification lowers concentration risk, but it cannot prevent losses. Saudi and Egyptian equities can fall together when oil prices, interest rates, currency conditions, regional risk or global risk appetite change. Treat the regional allocation as a risk-controlled part of the whole portfolio, not as a substitute for a globally diversified plan.
Start by measuring the concentration you actually have
Look through every holding, including funds. A portfolio may appear to contain several securities while still making one large bet on the same economy or revenue source. Record each position’s market value and classify it by company, sector, country of listing, main source of revenue, currency and asset class. Also record whether a fund owns Saudi or Egyptian securities indirectly, because a global or emerging-market fund can add to your country totals without appearing in the account name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse current market values rather than the amount originally invested. A stock that has risen sharply can become a much larger risk than its purchase percentage suggests. Likewise, a falling position can become underweight without any sale. Recalculate after major deposits, withdrawals, corporate actions and fund rebalances.

Company concentration
Set a written maximum for any single stock before buying it. The Saudi Capital Market Authority (CMA) illustrates the principle by noting that a portfolio holding eight or nine shares in varying sectors is less affected by one company’s decline than a portfolio holding only one or two. That example is not a required number of holdings; it demonstrates why a single-company position can dominate outcomes.
Look through index funds as well as direct holdings. Two different funds may own the same large Saudi bank or Egyptian industrial company, so the effective position is their combined weight. Employee shares, founder holdings and restricted accounts should be included even if they cannot be sold immediately; illiquidity is itself a portfolio risk.
Sector and economic-driver concentration
Count exposures to banks, petrochemicals, energy, telecommunications, real estate, construction, consumer companies and other sectors. Then look beyond labels. Several sectors can be driven by the same oil cycle, domestic credit growth, government spending, interest rates or household demand. Ten stocks are not genuinely diversified if most depend on one macroeconomic driver.
Write down the driver behind each position: oil prices, government contracts, local lending, imported inputs, tourism, household consumption or another factor. This exercise can reveal that a nominally diversified sector mix is still exposed to one policy or commodity shock. Sector limits should therefore be accompanied by limits on the combined exposure to a shared driver.
Country concentration
Saudi and Egypt are separate markets, but owning both does not create global diversification. They share regional, emerging-market, commodity, interest-rate and foreign-flow risks. Compare their combined value with your entire portfolio, including any MENA, emerging-market or global funds that already hold them.
Country exposure should be measured by the location where companies earn revenue as well as by listing venue. A company listed in one country may receive substantial sales elsewhere. The listing country is a useful starting point, but the economic exposure in the annual report and fund factsheet provides a more complete picture.
Asset-class concentration
Stocks can lose value at the same time. Saudi CMA guidance says asset allocation can combine stocks, investment funds, real estate and other assets with different risk levels. Add assets whose return drivers are not identical to equities, while keeping enough liquidity for near-term spending and emergencies.
Do not count a money-market fund or sukuk fund as an equity diversifier without checking what it owns and how its price behaves. The objective is to combine assets with different risk characteristics, not simply to increase the number of account lines.
Use a core-satellite structure
A core-satellite design makes the regional exposure intentional. The core is a broad global developed- and emerging-market allocation that reduces dependence on Saudi and Egyptian macro factors. The satellite is the Saudi and/or Egyptian exposure you can explain, monitor and tolerate through a full market cycle. Stabilising assets sit alongside both.

Global core
Use a broad pooled vehicle or combination of funds that covers many countries and sectors. Check its actual country weights: a fund labelled “emerging markets” may still have meaningful Saudi or Egyptian exposure, so add those weights to your direct holdings when calculating concentration.
Compare the core’s index methodology, fees, domicile and currency with your needs. A broad label does not guarantee equal country weights or low concentration. Review the factsheet at least annually and whenever the provider changes the benchmark or rebalance rules.
Regional satellite
Decide what role Saudi or Egypt serves. A satellite might express a view on a local market, provide home-country familiarity or support a long-term liability in that currency. Give it a maximum range in your investment policy, and include direct shares, regional funds and indirect exposures in the same total.
A satellite is not a separate risk-free account. Set a loss and liquidity expectation before investing, and specify what would make you reduce it: a breach of a country or company limit, a change in liabilities, or a deterioration in your ability to tolerate volatility. Avoid changing the target solely because one market has recently outperformed.
Stability and liquidity sleeve
High-quality bonds, sukuk, money-market funds and cash can reduce overall equity volatility and provide funds for rebalancing. The Saudi Exchange lists sukuk and bonds alongside equities and funds, and its investor FAQ describes diversification that includes sukuk and bonds. Match maturities to when you expect to spend the money; do not use volatile equities for a short-term obligation.
Keep emergency reserves separate from the amount earmarked for long-term rebalancing. A cash sleeve can prevent a forced sale during a market decline, while a ladder of high-quality fixed-income holdings can align expected cash flows with tuition, housing or retirement withdrawals.

Choose between pooled funds and individual shares
Broad ETFs and index funds
The Saudi Exchange describes ETFs as index-tracking units traded during market hours. They may hold equities, commodities or sukuk. Their risks are the risks of the underlying assets, so an ETF does not remove Saudi, sector or currency risk; it mainly spreads security-level exposure. The exchange’s current FAQ lists a 15.5-basis-point commission per trade for ETFs and equities. Brokerage, custody, bid-ask spreads and fund expenses are additional costs to verify with your intermediary.
Trading during market hours does not guarantee continuous liquidity. Check the typical bid-ask spread, daily volume and whether an authorised participant is actively creating and redeeming units. In a stressed market, the quoted price can move away from net asset value. Use limit orders when appropriate and estimate the cost of entering and exiting, not just the annual expense ratio.
For a Saudi or MENA ETF, read the index methodology, country and sector caps, rebalancing schedule, tracking difference, fund size, creation and redemption process, domicile and investor eligibility. A CMA approval notice for the Yaqeen S&P ESG MENA ETF states that the terms and conditions contain strategy and risk factors and that CMA approval should not be considered a recommendation to invest. Apply that same standard to every approved product.

Egypt-focused pooled exposure
The official EGX30 ETF site displayed 98.3% market-price tracking and 99.9% net-asset-value tracking for its shown 60-day period in October 2026. Those are observations for that fund and period, not a promise of future tracking. Ask whether the figures are calculated before or after fees, whether they refer to price or NAV, and whether local holidays or currency conversion affected the comparison.
Investigate how the fund handles creation and redemption, liquidity, local market holidays, currency conversion and any foreign-investment limits. Confirm the dealing cut-off, settlement cycle, distribution policy and what happens if the fund becomes too small to operate. A product can track its index closely while still being expensive or difficult for a particular investor to access.
Individual shares
Direct shares allow deliberate sector, quality or factor tilts, but they require a position-sizing rule and ongoing analysis. A group of Saudi or Egyptian companies can still move together when they share oil, rate, currency or domestic-demand exposure. Use a written maximum per company and per sector, and review whether a proposed purchase increases an existing economic-driver concentration.
Direct ownership also creates research and execution work: financial statements, corporate actions, trading hours, settlement and dividend treatment must be monitored. If you cannot evaluate those items or maintain the limits, a pooled vehicle may provide a more workable satellite even when its fees are higher.
Evaluate Saudi exposure in its current market context
Saudi Arabia entered the MSCI Emerging Markets Index in 2019. MSCI reports that the market has developed more diversified sector exposure and that foreign-investor participation increased more than fourfold from 2018 to 2024. These developments broaden access and market representation, but they do not eliminate country, valuation, oil-cycle, currency or single-market risk.
Recommended Free Tools
Greater foreign participation can improve access and trading depth, yet it can also mean that global risk-off flows affect prices quickly. Treat index inclusion as a market-structure fact, not as evidence that returns will be higher or volatility lower.
When comparing Saudi products, distinguish a broad Saudi index from a MENA index, an ESG-screened index and a sector fund. Read the constituents and weights rather than relying on the label. A broad index can still be top-heavy, while an ESG or sector screen can increase exposure to a smaller set of companies. Check whether the fund is physically replicated or uses another method, and note how often it rebalances.
Handle Egypt exposure in two currencies
Measure Egyptian holdings in Egyptian pounds and in your portfolio’s base currency. A local-market gain can become a base-currency loss if the pound weakens, and a foreign-currency gain can be reduced by conversion costs. Decide whether the exposure is intended to hedge future Egyptian-pound spending or to seek investment returns in another currency.
A securities disclosure filed with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission for an Egypt ETF identifies risks that include difficulty converting Egyptian pounds at the official rate, cash redemptions, limited liquidity, foreign-investment restrictions and differences in market hours. Check current broker eligibility, settlement arrangements, repatriation rules and the applicable exchange-rate mechanism before trading.

These issues can affect an apparently simple sale. Proceeds may be delayed, conversion may occur at a rate different from the one used in a performance chart, and market-hours differences can leave an ETF trading while local securities are closed. Build a cash buffer for settlement and do not assume that an exchange-listed product can always be exited at its latest indicative value.
Egyptian fund performance figures need the same currency and period labels. The Egyptian Financial Regulatory Authority reported total investment-fund net assets of EGP 470.9 billion at the end of June 2026. It reported average Q2 2026 returns of 18.35% for index funds, 17.45% for equity funds, 16.37% for Islamic-equity funds and 16.13% for ETFs. These are historical local-market averages, not forecasts and not returns an individual investor is guaranteed to receive.
Compare any candidate fund or portfolio sleeve on the same checklist
| Comparison | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Country and sector concentration | Constituent weights, country caps, sector caps and overlap with your existing Saudi, Egyptian, MENA and global funds. |
| Total cost | Expense ratio, brokerage, custody, 15.5-basis-point Saudi Exchange trading commission where applicable, taxes and foreign-exchange charges. |
| Trading liquidity | Typical bid-ask spread, trading volume, creation and redemption activity and the ability to exit in stressed markets. |
| Currency | Trading currency, underlying-asset currency, any hedge, hedge frequency and the effect on your base-currency return. |
| Legal structure | Domicile, withholding-tax treatment, investor eligibility and the rules governing distributions and redemptions. |
| Index and tracking | Index methodology, rebalance dates, tracking difference and whether published results are market-price or net-asset-value figures. |
| Fund durability | Assets, issuer processes, closure or merger provisions and how investors are treated if the fund is wound up. |
| Rebalancing | How often the index or portfolio changes and whether turnover creates additional costs or tax consequences. |
Compare like with like. An annual expense ratio cannot be evaluated without the spread and commission on the trade, and a low-cost fund may still be unsuitable if its domicile creates an unfavorable withholding-tax result or if you are not eligible to buy it. Record each item in a comparison sheet and revisit it when terms change.
Set limits without pretending there is a universal percentage
There is no defensible fixed answer to “How much Egypt exposure is too much?” A suitable limit depends on your horizon, emergency reserves, income stability, liabilities, tax residence, base currency, other emerging-market holdings and ability to withstand a large drawdown without selling.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Instead, write an investment policy with ranges. Define a target range for the combined Saudi/Egypt satellite, a maximum for each country, a maximum for one company and a maximum for one sector. Specify whether limits are measured at market value or look-through exposure. Include indirect holdings: a global or MENA fund’s Saudi and Egyptian weights count toward the limits.
Use risk capacity, not only risk appetite. Someone with stable income, a long horizon and no near-term withdrawals may tolerate more equity volatility than someone funding tuition, a home purchase or retirement withdrawals soon. If a liability is denominated in Egyptian pounds or Saudi riyals, currency matching may change the role of local assets, but it does not make their equity risk disappear.
State what happens when a limit is breached. You might direct new contributions elsewhere, trim the largest position, or rebalance only after a review of taxes and liquidity. A written procedure reduces the temptation to increase exposure after a rally or sell everything after a fall.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rebalance with a rule you can follow
Choose either calendar rebalancing, such as an annual review, or threshold rebalancing, in which you trade only when a holding moves outside a written band. A hybrid rule can use a calendar check and trade only when a band is breached. Direct new contributions and dividends to underweight assets before selling, when practical.
- Update the look-through inventory. Record market value, country, sector, currency and asset class for every holding.
- Calculate drift. Compare each position and sleeve with its target and permitted range.
- Check the cause. Determine whether drift reflects price movement, contributions, distributions, index changes or a change in your circumstances.
- Estimate friction. Include spreads, the Saudi Exchange’s stated 15.5-basis-point trading commission where applicable, brokerage, custody, taxes and foreign-exchange costs.
- Trade the smallest number of positions needed. Prefer liquid instruments and avoid forcing a sale when a tax or market-impact cost outweighs the benefit.
- Document the decision. Record the weights, prices, costs, reason and next review date.
Rebalancing is a risk-control process, not a forecast. It can require selling a recent winner and buying an underperformer. If taxes, access restrictions or settlement delays prevent a timely trade, document the exception and use contributions or dividends to move gradually toward the permitted range.

Common diversification mistakes and their fixes
- Counting tickers instead of drivers: Replace a ticker count with company, sector, country and macro-driver exposure.
- Assuming an ETF is automatically safe: Read the underlying holdings and remember that the Saudi Exchange says ETF risks are the same as those of the underlying assets.
- Ignoring currency: Report Egyptian results in both EGP and your base currency, and include conversion and repatriation constraints.
- Chasing a recent return: Label every performance number by source, currency and period; Q2 2026 fund averages are historical observations, not forecasts.
- Overlooking liquidity: A quoted price may not be an executable price for a large order. Use limit orders where appropriate and check spreads at the time you trade.
- Rebalancing too often: Frequent turnover can consume returns through spreads, commissions, taxes and FX costs. Use written bands.
- Using equities for near-term spending: Keep required cash flows in cash, money-market instruments or appropriately matched high-quality fixed income.
- Confusing regulatory approval with endorsement: The CMA’s approval notice for the Yaqeen S&P ESG MENA ETF explicitly says approval is not a recommendation to invest.
- Ignoring overlap: Add direct holdings and every fund’s look-through Saudi and Egyptian weights before deciding that a new product is diversified.
- Assuming local returns equal investor returns: Separate market performance from currency conversion, fees, taxes and any inability to repatriate proceeds.
A practical implementation sequence
- Define the base currency and liabilities. List spending needs by currency and date.
- Map current exposure. Include direct Saudi and Egyptian shares, funds, employer plans and other accounts.
- Choose the global core. Select broad developed- and emerging-market coverage after checking its existing Saudi and Egypt weights.
- Set the regional satellite range. Base it on risk capacity, horizon and the role you want the region to play, not on a generic percentage.
- Select instruments. Compare pooled funds and individual shares using the cost, liquidity, currency, legal, tracking and durability checklist.
- Add stabilisers. Allocate suitable bonds, sukuk, money-market funds or cash for volatility control and planned withdrawals.
- Write limits and a rebalance rule. Include company, sector, country and asset-class maximums and a review schedule.
- Verify current conditions before placing orders. Confirm broker eligibility, fund terms, tax treatment, FX rules, settlement, liquidity and fees for your jurisdiction.
What a diversified outcome should and should not do
A well-designed structure should make one company’s failure less damaging, reduce dependence on one sector or country and provide assets that can be sold or used for spending without liquidating equities at a bad time. It will not guarantee a profit, prevent simultaneous losses in Saudi and Egyptian markets or remove currency, regulatory, liquidity and valuation risk.
Review the plan when your liabilities, residence, tax status, income, time horizon or ability to tolerate losses changes. Otherwise, let the written limits and rebalancing rule—not headlines or a single year’s return—drive changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I diversify if most of my portfolio is in Saudi stocks or Egyptian stocks?
First calculate look-through exposure by company, sector, country, currency and asset class. Then build a broad global developed- and emerging-market core, keep Saudi and Egypt as a defined satellite, and add high-quality bonds, sukuk, money-market funds or cash. Include the Saudi and Egyptian weights already held inside global, emerging-market or MENA funds.

Should I buy a Saudi or MENA ETF instead of individual shares?
An ETF can spread security-level risk and trade during market hours, but it retains the risks of its underlying assets. Compare the index methodology, concentration, tracking difference, spread, fund expenses, 15.5-basis-point Saudi Exchange commission where applicable, domicile, taxes, eligibility and liquidity. Individual shares offer deliberate tilts but require stricter company and sector limits and more ongoing analysis.
How much Egypt exposure is too much?
There is no universal percentage. Set a country maximum after considering your base currency, liabilities, emergency reserves, income stability, time horizon, tax residence, other emerging-market holdings and ability to withstand a drawdown. Measure the total in both Egyptian pounds and your base currency, including indirect fund holdings.
Why can an Egypt investment rise locally but lose money for me?
Your base-currency result combines the local share price, the Egyptian-pound exchange rate, fees and conversion costs. Pound weakness can offset a local-market gain. Conversion at the official rate may also be difficult, and liquidity or foreign-investment restrictions can delay or change the value of cash proceeds.
Are ETF tracking figures a guarantee?
No. The EGX30 ETF site displayed 98.3% market-price tracking and 99.9% net-asset-value tracking for its shown 60-day period in October 2026. Those figures describe that fund and period only. Check whether future results may differ because of fees, spreads, trading hours, currency conversion or index changes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What costs should I include when rebalancing?
Estimate the bid-ask spread, brokerage, custody, taxes, foreign-exchange charges and fund expenses. For Saudi Exchange ETF and equity trades, the current FAQ lists a 15.5-basis-point commission. Also consider market impact and any cost created by selling a position in a less liquid market.
Does Saudi market development remove country risk?
No. Saudi Arabia joined the MSCI Emerging Markets Index in 2019, and MSCI reports more diversified sector exposure and more than a fourfold increase in foreign-investor participation from 2018 to 2024. Those changes broaden access but do not remove valuation, oil-cycle, currency, country or single-market risk.
What should I keep in cash or fixed income?
Keep near-term spending and emergency reserves in cash, money-market instruments or appropriately matched high-quality fixed income rather than volatile equities. Sukuk and bonds can provide liquidity for rebalancing, but check their own credit, duration, currency and liquidity characteristics.
The Bottom Line
Use Saudi and Egyptian equities as a measured satellite, not the portfolio’s entire foundation. A global core, stabilising assets, written company/sector/country limits and disciplined rebalancing can reduce concentration without pretending that currency, liquidity or market losses can be eliminated.
