In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the correct way to clear a boulder depends on its class. Use a Bomb or Bombchu for a bombable rock, the Megaton Hammer for a hammer-type rock, and Silver Gauntlets for a heavy gray or silver rock that is designed to be lifted. If Link does not yet have the matching item, the glitchless answer is to follow the normal story until that item becomes available and return later.
Having one strength-related item does not make every boulder interactive. A rock that refuses to move with Silver Gauntlets is usually a hammer-only obstacle, not a broken control or a missed button prompt.
Identify the boulder before choosing an item
Ocarina of Time does not use one universal “break rock” mechanic. Boulder obstacles are authored for different item checks, so the first step is to determine which class you are looking at. The useful distinctions are whether the rock is bombable, hammer-type, or a gray/silver boulder intended to be lifted.

Color can provide a clue, but it is not a complete rule. A red or otherwise visibly hammer-type rock should be treated as a Megaton Hammer check, while gray or silver rocks may be gauntlet checks. If an apparent gray rock cannot be lifted, test the possibility that it is actually in the hammer class or is not intended to move at all.

Use Bombs or Bombchus on bombable boulders
Bombs are the earliest broadly useful explosive solution. Nintendo’s instruction manual describes the Bomb as an explosive item, and the Bomb Bag is introduced in Dodongo’s Cavern. A Bombchu is an alternative explosive where the game permits it, but neither explosive substitutes for the hammer or Silver Gauntlets on every rock type.
Step-by-step bomb method
- Stand close enough to the obstruction that the blast will reach it, while leaving Link room to avoid being caught in the explosion.
- Equip a Bomb from the item interface. If the room accepts Bombchus for that obstacle, you can select a Bombchu instead.
- Place or release the explosive next to the boulder, then move away until it detonates.
- Check the passage or object after the explosion. A successfully bombable rock disappears or opens the route it was blocking.
The exact placement matters less than the obstacle’s class. If several well-positioned explosions do nothing, stop spending ammunition: the rock is probably not bombable, the explosive was not accepted in that room, or the intended item is the Megaton Hammer or Silver Gauntlets.
Bomb troubleshooting
- No reaction: Confirm that the rock is a bombable obstacle rather than a hammer-type or liftable boulder.
- You run out of explosives: Treat bombs as consumables. Restock through normal gameplay and return; do not interpret an empty Bomb inventory as evidence that the room requires a glitch.
- A Bombchu travels away: Bombchus follow their own movement behavior. Use an ordinary Bomb when the room allows both and you need predictable placement.
- The blast damages Link: Place the explosive, create distance, and wait for the detonation. Damage does not indicate that the item is wrong.
Bombs can clear a standard bombable obstacle even when Link is not yet an adult. That does not make them a replacement for the adult-only Megaton Hammer, and it does not grant the lifting ability provided by Silver Gauntlets.

Use the Megaton Hammer on hammer-type boulders
The Megaton Hammer is the intended answer for hammer-type boulders and several other heavy obstacles. It is obtained in the Fire Temple as Adult Link, so a child Link who reaches an apparently impossible hammer check has not missed a secret input: the required progression item is not available in that state.
Nintendo’s instruction manual summarizes the tool’s purpose directly: “Move big blocks or activate a rusted switch with the Hammer. You can also use it as a weapon.” That description explains why some obstructions look similar to bombable rocks but ignore explosives. Their interaction is tied to the hammer rather than to blast damage.
Step-by-step hammer method
- Become Adult Link through the normal story progression if you have not already done so.
- Acquire the Megaton Hammer in the Fire Temple.
- Equip the hammer and stand in front of the obstruction or switch.
- Use the hammer attack on the rock. For a hammer-type boulder, the impact should clear the obstruction or expose the route it protects.
- Try the same tool on nearby rusted switches or heavy blocks when the room’s layout suggests that they belong to the same interaction family.
The hammer is a permanent progression item, not an expendable resource. Once you have it, you can revisit earlier rooms that were visibly hammer-gated without carrying a supply of bombs for those checks.

When bombs fail but the hammer works
A common mistake is to classify every destructible-looking rock as bombable. Visual damage is not the deciding test. If repeated bombs produce no change and the rock has the appearance or placement of a heavy, hammer-type obstacle, return with the Megaton Hammer. The same principle applies when a route includes a rusted switch: the manual specifically associates those switches with the hammer.
Use Silver Gauntlets to lift qualifying gray or silver boulders
Silver Gauntlets are a separate strength upgrade that lets Link lift heavy gray or silver boulders designed for that interaction. They are not a universal “strong enough for every rock” upgrade. A gauntlet check succeeds only when the object is authored as a liftable boulder.
Step-by-step lifting method
- Obtain Silver Gauntlets through the normal story route.
- Approach a gray or silver boulder that appears positioned for lifting rather than smashing or blasting.
- Stand directly in front of it and use the lift command.
- Carry or move the boulder away from the path, switch, chest, or opening it was blocking.
- Reposition Link and the camera if the interaction prompt does not appear; then test the lift again before assuming the item is wrong.
Unlike bombs, lifting is not a timed attack. The object must be a compatible liftable type, and Link must be positioned correctly. If the game gives no lift response after you have adjusted your position, classify the obstacle again rather than repeatedly pressing the same button.
Why Silver Gauntlets may not lift a rock
The question “Why can’t I lift the rock? I have the gauntlets” usually has a straightforward answer: the rock is hammer-only or otherwise not a liftable gray boulder. Silver Gauntlets do not convert hammer-type rocks into liftable objects. Bring the Megaton Hammer when the obstacle belongs to that class.
Child Link, Adult Link, and return visits
Link’s age is a practical routing constraint. Bombs and Bombchus are explosive tools that can be used when the room accepts them, while the Megaton Hammer is explicitly an Adult Link item. Silver Gauntlets represent a different strength upgrade and should be treated as their own requirement.

Returning later is not a failure state. Ocarina of Time places item-gated obstacles in areas that are meant to be revisited. If the room cannot be solved with the tools currently available to your version of Link, mark the location and continue the main route.

Room and routing notes
The Boulder Maze
The Boulder Maze can be cleared with Silver Gauntlets in glitchless logic. That makes it a useful example of why item identification matters: the correct solution is lifting, not improvising a movement exploit or assuming every maze rock needs a bomb.
Other boulder checks
Other rooms can call for explosives or the Megaton Hammer. A route that contains several visually similar rocks may still mix classes, so do not infer that one successful interaction applies to every nearby obstruction. Check each rock’s behavior and the item associated with its class.
When a map or video seems to skip an item
Randomizer routes and speedrun demonstrations may use logic settings or movement techniques that are different from a standard glitchless playthrough. If a route appears to demand a climb, clip, bomb hover, or hookshot-anywhere maneuver, first verify whether the normal item has been obtained and whether the route is intended for a different rule set.
What “without glitches” excludes
A glitchless solution uses the item interaction the room was designed to accept. It does not rely on forcing Link through collision, extending a hookshot beyond its normal reach, hovering on a bomb blast, or sequence-breaking the item order.
- Hookshot-anywhere: Using the hookshot through surfaces or to reach positions outside its ordinary targeting rules.
- Climb-anywhere techniques: Exploiting geometry to climb a wall or ledge that the game does not normally make traversable.
- Bomb hovering: Using explosive knockback or timing to cross a gap or bypass an intended item check.
- Clipping and related sequence breaks: Passing through collision or reaching progression areas before the normal requirement.
These techniques can be valid in a specialized challenge category, but they answer a different question. For a normal glitchless file, use the bomb class, hammer class, or gauntlet class that matches the obstacle and follow the intended progression.

Use this checklist whenever a boulder blocks a path:

- Observe the rock. Note whether it looks like a standard bombable obstacle, a heavy or hammer-type obstruction, or a gray/silver liftable boulder.
- Test the least costly plausible item. If it is clearly bombable, use one Bomb or Bombchu. Do not spend a large supply on a rock that shows no reaction.
- Check Link’s age. If the obstacle is hammer-type and you are playing Child Link, the Megaton Hammer is not available yet.
- Separate lifting from smashing. Silver Gauntlets apply only to qualifying liftable rocks; they do not replace the Megaton Hammer.
- Verify progression. Bomb Bag access begins in Dodongo’s Cavern, the Megaton Hammer comes from the Fire Temple as Adult Link, and Silver Gauntlets are a separate strength upgrade.
- Return instead of forcing the route. If the required item is missing, leave the obstacle and revisit it after normal story progress.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Using bombs on every rock
Explosives are useful but class-specific. A bomb that works on one obstruction does not establish that every boulder in the area is bombable. When an explosion has no effect, stop treating the rock as a generic destructible object.

Silver Gauntlets increase lifting strength; they do not alter the interaction type of hammer-only rocks. Switch to the Megaton Hammer when the rock is heavy, hammer-type, or associated with a rusted switch.
Confusing missing progress with a glitch
Reaching an obstacle before the required item is normal. The game expects backtracking. Check whether you are Child or Adult Link, identify which permanent item the room is checking, and continue the story if that item is not yet obtainable.
Following a route from a different rule set
Randomizer logic and speedrun routes can intentionally permit or discuss sequence breaks. A standard playthrough should not copy a movement exploit simply because it appears in a video or map. Use the intended item interaction instead.
