Start with Android’s Private DNS setting and a reputable filtering DNS provider. It works without root, requires no traffic-filtering app, and can reduce advertising and tracker requests in many apps. If you need more control, use a local-VPN filtering app, but Android allows only one active VPN service per user or profile. For ads on web pages only, a browser content blocker is simpler and avoids changing other apps.
No method can promise that every in-app advertisement will disappear. DNS filters block domain requests; ads that use an unblocked domain or share infrastructure with the app can remain. Local-VPN filters can inspect more traffic, while browser blockers are deliberately limited to supported browsers.
What “blocking ads without root” means
Root access gives software elevated control over Android’s operating system. The methods in this guide leave the phone unrooted and use interfaces Android already provides:

- Local VPN filtering: An installed app creates a VPN interface that stays on the phone and examines network traffic before it reaches other apps. It is not necessarily a remote VPN service routing your data through another country.
- Browser content blocking: A supported browser or companion blocker removes web-page advertising within that browser only.
These approaches operate at different layers. A DNS filter sees requests for host names, a local-VPN filter can apply more detailed traffic rules, and a browser blocker can work with page elements and browser-specific filter lists. Choosing the right layer matters more than choosing the longest block list.

Choose the method that fits your phone

Use Private DNS first if you want a low-friction reduction in advertising across ordinary app traffic. Choose a local-VPN blocker when you need app-wide controls and accept the VPN trade-off. Use a browser blocker when the problem is web pages rather than apps.
Method 1: Configure Android Private DNS
Why this is the best first attempt
Private DNS is built into current Android versions and can be enabled without installing a filtering application. A provider such as AdGuard DNS or Blokada Cloud supplies a DNS hostname and applies its own ad and tracker lists. Android then uses that service for compatible network connections.
The exact labels differ between Android releases and manufacturers. If the paths below do not match, open Settings and search for Private DNS.
Setup steps
- Open Settings.
- Open Network & internet, Connections, or the similarly named network section.
- Tap Private DNS. On some phones it is under More connection settings.
- Select Private DNS provider hostname.
- Enter the exact hostname supplied by your chosen filtering DNS provider. Do not enter a web address with
https://unless the provider specifically tells you to; Private DNS expects a hostname. - Tap Save, then reconnect Wi-Fi or mobile data if the status does not change immediately.
To return to ordinary DNS, revisit the same screen and choose Automatic. The Off option, where available, disables Private DNS entirely and is generally not needed for troubleshooting.

Test the result without assuming perfection
Open several apps that normally show advertising and check whether their ad requests or banners change. Also visit a few ordinary web pages in your browser. Results vary with the provider’s lists, the app’s ad technology and the network being used. A successful Private DNS connection does not mean every ad will be removed.
What DNS filtering can and cannot block
DNS filtering acts when an app asks for a domain name. If the domain is on the provider’s block list, the lookup can fail and the associated request may not load. If the advertiser uses a new or unlisted domain, the ad can still appear. An app may also deliver advertising from the same domain that serves its core content; blocking that entire domain could break the app, so DNS lists may deliberately leave it accessible.
DNS filtering cannot inspect the full contents of an encrypted web request. It also cannot remove an ad that is already bundled into an app response, embedded in an image, or generated locally. Treat it as broad request filtering, not a guarantee of an ad-free interface.

Common Private DNS problems
- No internet after saving: Recheck the provider hostname character for character, switch temporarily to Automatic, and test another network. A typo or a provider outage can prevent DNS resolution.
- Ads remain in one app: The app may use an unlisted domain, hard-coded addresses, encrypted DNS of its own, or content and advertising from the same host. This is a limitation of the method, not proof that Private DNS is disabled.
- Only Wi-Fi or only mobile data works: Compare both networks and any captive portal. Hotel, workplace or school networks can impose their own DNS behavior or require a sign-in before Private DNS can function.
- A managed phone ignores the setting: Work profiles, parental controls and enterprise policies can restrict DNS changes. The administrator must allow the configuration.
Method 2: Use a local-VPN ad-blocking app
When a local VPN makes sense
On a non-rooted phone, a local-VPN blocker is the system-wide filtering method that can provide more control than DNS alone. AdGuard’s Android documentation describes Local VPN mode as a way to filter ads and trackers in browsers and apps. The app creates a VPN interface on the device, applies its filters, and forwards permitted traffic normally.
Because the interface is local, enabling it does not automatically mean your traffic is being sent to the blocker’s remote servers. Read the app’s description and privacy policy to understand whether any optional cloud services are involved.

General setup procedure
- Install a reputable ad-blocking application from a source you trust and verify that it supports non-rooted Android devices.
- Open the app and choose its Local VPN, VPN mode or equivalent non-root filtering option.
- Accept Android’s VPN connection prompt. Android may display a warning because the app can process network traffic; that prompt is expected for a local filter.
- Start with the app’s default ad and tracker lists. Add custom lists or per-app rules only after confirming that normal apps still work.
- Check the app’s status indicator and test both Wi-Fi and mobile data. Android’s VPN key icon normally appears while the local service is active.
The one-VPN rule you must plan for
Android allows only one active VPN service for each user or profile. Starting a second VPN service stops the first. Therefore, a local-VPN ad blocker and a separate privacy, work-access or travel VPN generally cannot run at the same time on the same profile.
Before enabling local filtering, decide which function is more important. If you need the separate VPN, keep the ad blocker in Private DNS mode if it offers one, or use browser-only blocking. If you need the blocker’s detailed app-wide rules, disconnect the other VPN and verify that its traffic protection is no longer active.
HTTPS inspection is optional and more sensitive
Some filtering features require the app to inspect HTTPS traffic. That usually involves installing a local certificate and enabling an inspection setting. Do not treat certificate installation as a routine first step: it increases the amount of encrypted traffic the filtering app can read and may cause banking, streaming or enterprise apps to reject the connection.
Use HTTPS inspection only when you understand the app’s trust model and the exact benefit. Keep it disabled when domain-level filtering is sufficient, and remove the certificate if you stop using the feature. Android’s certificate-management screen can show user-installed certificates so you can audit what remains.

Local-VPN failure modes
- Another VPN keeps taking over: Disconnect or disable the other VPN service, then restart the blocker. Android cannot keep both active for the same profile.
- An app stops connecting: Temporarily pause filtering, then add that app to an allowlist or disable the specific filter that caused the failure. Do not immediately enable HTTPS inspection as a workaround.
- Filtering stops in the background: Remove battery restrictions for the blocker if your phone’s manufacturer aggressively suspends background apps. Check the blocker’s persistent notification or status page after a reboot.
- Work-profile traffic is unaffected: A work profile is a separate Android profile with its own VPN state and policies. The profile administrator may need to install or approve the filter.
Method 3: Block ads in a browser
If advertisements bother you mainly on web pages, a browser content blocker avoids changing other apps and avoids the system VPN conflict. AdGuard’s Content Blocker documentation notes that its API is limited to supported browsers. It does not block advertisements inside apps or in browsers that are not supported.
Browser-only setup
- Choose a browser that supports content blocking or a compatible blocker.
- Install or enable the blocker through that browser’s own add-on, extension or content-blocking settings.
- Keep the default filter lists initially, then reload a page to confirm that the blocker is active.
- Use the site’s allowlist when a page’s login, video player or navigation fails. Allowlisting one site is safer than disabling blocking everywhere.
This option is appropriate when you want clean news pages, fewer tracking scripts or less intrusive web advertising but still need another VPN or unrestricted app traffic. It cannot affect an advertisement rendered by a game, social app or streaming application.
Can you combine these approaches?
You can combine Private DNS with browser-level blocking because they operate at different layers. The browser can remove page elements that DNS cannot identify, while DNS can block domains requested by apps outside the browser.
Do not run a local-VPN blocker and another VPN service simultaneously for the same Android user or profile. If the blocker offers a DNS-only mode, that mode may coexist with a separate VPN, but confirm which service is actually active after switching. A browser blocker can also be used alongside a remote VPN because it normally does not claim Android’s VPN slot.

How to choose in common situations
You want the simplest phone-wide reduction
Configure Private DNS with a filtering provider. It requires one system change, leaves your VPN slot available and does not require an app to remain active. Expect uneven results in apps that bundle ads with their own content.
You need per-app rules and detailed controls
Use a local-VPN blocker, provided you do not need another VPN at the same time. Start with defaults, then add exceptions for apps that break. Consider HTTPS inspection only for a clearly understood need.

Use a supported browser content blocker. It has the narrowest reach, but that is an advantage when you want app networking unchanged or when a separate VPN is essential.
You use a work profile or managed phone
Check whether the organization controls Private DNS, VPN permissions or certificate installation. Personal-profile settings may not apply to work-profile apps, and attempting to bypass policy can violate your organization’s rules.
Practical troubleshooting checklist
- Identify the layer: Decide whether the unwanted ad is in an app, a browser page or both. A browser blocker cannot solve an in-app problem.
- Check the active connection: Look for the Private DNS status in Settings or the VPN key icon for a local blocker.
- Test one change at a time: Disable the filter temporarily, reload the affected app and re-enable it. This distinguishes filtering from an unrelated network outage.
- Try another network: Compare Wi-Fi and mobile data. Captive portals, enterprise networks and DNS interception can produce different results.
- Allowlist narrowly: If one app fails, exempt that app or domain rather than turning off every list.
- Review battery and data settings: Manufacturer power management can stop a local filter; unrestricted background operation may be necessary.
- Undo risky changes: If HTTPS inspection caused certificate errors, disable it and remove the user certificate associated with the blocker.
Privacy and reliability considerations
A DNS provider can see the domain lookups sent through its service. A local-VPN blocker can process traffic on the phone, and an HTTPS-inspection mode can read more than domain names. Select a provider or app whose privacy terms you understand, keep software updated, and avoid unknown filter-list downloads.
Filtering can also affect functionality. Advertising may fund a free app, and an app may refuse to load when its ad or analytics endpoint is blocked. Use an allowlist for software you trust instead of repeatedly changing multiple settings. When troubleshooting, record which setting you changed so you can restore the previous state.
Maintenance checklist
- Recheck the Private DNS hostname or local blocker status after Android updates.
- Review filter-list updates and remove lists that cause repeated breakage.
- Confirm that your separate VPN is active whenever the local blocker is disabled.
- Inspect user-installed certificates periodically if HTTPS inspection was ever enabled.
- Revisit app allowlists after installing major app updates, because ad and content domains can change.
The bottom line
For most unrooted Android phones, Private DNS is the sensible starting point: it is built in, quick to reverse and broad enough to reduce many ad and tracker requests. A local-VPN blocker is the stronger choice when you need detailed, app-wide filtering and can give up Android’s single VPN slot. A browser blocker is the cleanest answer for web pages alone. Whichever route you choose, measure success by fewer unwanted requests and a working phone—not by a promise that every advertisement will vanish.
