For most visitors to mainland China, the most resilient payment setup is three-part: link an eligible overseas bank card to Alipay or Weixin Pay, carry the physical card, and keep some renminbi (RMB) cash. QR payments are convenient and widely used, but neither a linked card nor a mobile wallet guarantees acceptance at every merchant. Direct card acceptance depends on the network displayed at checkout and the merchant’s payment terminal; cash remains a recognized fallback.
The best overall payment strategy
Use a mobile wallet for everyday QR purchases, keep a physical international card for merchants and services that accept its network, and carry RMB for small businesses, transport situations, outages, or a wallet that cannot be used. This is more reliable than choosing one method and assuming it works everywhere.
This guide covers mainland China. Hong Kong and Macao have distinct payment arrangements, so do not apply these instructions to either special administrative region without checking local guidance.
| Method | Where it helps most | What can prevent payment | Fallback value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alipay or Weixin Pay linked to an overseas card | QR-code purchases, taxis, restaurants, shops and many visitor-facing services | Issuer rejection, unsupported card, merchant or service limitations, identity or app setup problems, applicable fees | High, provided the physical card and cash are also available |
| Physical overseas bank card | Hotels, larger retailers, ticket counters and terminals displaying the card’s network | The merchant may not accept that network or may not have an enabled terminal | Useful when QR payment is unavailable |
| RMB cash | Small merchants, backup payments, and situations without a working data connection or compatible terminal | Finding an exchange service or compatible ATM; carrying and making change | Essential fallback, but not a reason to carry all travel funds in cash |
Official national guidance describes mobile payments, bank cards and cash as available options for overseas visitors. In practice, prepare all three before leaving home and test that your card issuer permits the intended use.

- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Set up Alipay or Weixin Pay before you travel
Setting up an app before departure is practical preparation rather than a guarantee of acceptance. Registration and identity verification can require a passport, a working phone number or email, and an issuer that authorizes the card link. Completing those steps while you can still contact your bank is easier than troubleshooting after arrival.
Alipay setup
- Install the official Alipay app from your phone’s app store and open the registration screen.
- Register with an international or local phone number, or with an email address if that option is offered to you.
- Complete identity verification using your passport when prompted.
- Open the wallet’s bank-card or payment-method area and add an eligible overseas card.
- Review the card details, billing information and any verification request from your issuer.
- Make sure you can display your payment code and scan a merchant QR code. The two QR flows are different: a merchant may present a code for you to scan, or you may present your own code for the merchant to scan.
- Before departure, open the payment screen once more and confirm that the linked card is selected and available.
Weixin Pay setup
- Install or update WeChat, then open the account and payment setup screens.
- Register with the phone number or other account details the app accepts in your region.
- Complete the requested identity verification with your passport.
- Use the payment wallet’s bank-card section to add an eligible overseas card.
- Check that the app shows the linked card as available for payment, then practice both scanning a merchant code and presenting your own payment code.
An official visitor guide lists Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club and Discover for Alipay. For Weixin Pay, the same guide lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover. The guide contains a minor wording inconsistency in one Weixin Pay card-linking instruction, so treat those networks as the guide’s listed support, not a promise for every account. Confirm the card and setup in the app itself.
National guidance specifically names Alipay and WeChat Pay and says international cards, including Visa and Mastercard, can be linked. A foreign card issuer can still reject the linkage. If that happens, contact the issuer, verify that overseas e-commerce or mobile-wallet transactions are enabled, or try another eligible card. A successfully linked card also does not mean every merchant or service accepts that payment route.
Fees, transaction limits and issuer controls
Fees and limits can vary by account, card, currency conversion, promotion and policy update. Always read the amount and fee shown on the confirmation screen before authorizing a payment.
Current guide-level figures
Shanghai Municipal Government guidance published September 21, 2026 reports a USD 5,000 ceiling for a single transaction made with a linked overseas card and a USD 50,000 annual cumulative ceiling. The same guidance says to check the limits applicable to your account rather than treating those figures as universal guarantees.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
That guidance also says a linked-card payment above RMB 200 may incur a 3% service fee calculated on the full transaction amount. Payments at or below RMB 200 are generally exempt. The exact charge or exemption should be verified on the payment page; do not assume that a promotion, account type or later policy update produces the same result.
A 2024 national report recorded a policy increase from USD 1,000 to USD 5,000 per transaction and from USD 10,000 to USD 50,000 annually. Those are useful policy history, while the 2026 Shanghai guidance is the more current source for the figures above.

- Your bank has blocked the transaction as unusual or has disabled international wallet payments.
- The card network or card type is not supported for that wallet account.
- The amount exceeds an account, issuer, wallet or merchant limit.
- The merchant’s QR code accepts only a particular wallet or domestic payment route.
- The app needs another identity check, card verification or account update.
- The phone has no usable data connection, or the app cannot reach its payment service.
Do not try to split payments merely to avoid a fee unless current authoritative instructions explicitly allow and explain that approach. Use the fee shown in the app, another payment method, or a different eligible card instead.
Can you use a foreign credit or debit card directly?
Yes, but only where the merchant’s terminal accepts the card’s network. Look for the relevant logo at the checkout or ask the cashier before ordering. The visitor guide identifies UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club International and Discover as networks to look for. Acceptance is merchant-specific, not universal.
Direct card payment is particularly useful at larger hotels, established retailers, ticket counters and other venues with international acquiring arrangements. Keep the physical card even if your wallet setup succeeds: a merchant may accept the card directly but not the wallet QR flow, or a wallet may be unavailable while the terminal is working.

How to improve the odds of a direct-card payment
- Carry at least one card on a network commonly displayed by the destination and a second payment option.
- Tell your issuer your travel dates and destination, and confirm foreign transactions, contactless payments and cash withdrawals are enabled.
- Use the card at a terminal showing its network logo; ask before the transaction if the logo is absent.
- Keep the card’s PIN available, because some terminals or cash machines may request it.
- Retain the card until the payment is fully approved and the receipt or app confirmation appears.
How to get RMB cash
Cash is a legitimate payment method and an important backup. National visitor guidance says foreign travelers can exchange currency at commercial-bank branches, money changers and self-service exchange machines at airports, land ports, seaports and other entry points. It also describes ATM withdrawals with international bank cards.
Exchange services
Exchange only what you need for the next part of your trip, because rates, hours and identification requirements vary by location. Keep the receipt or exchange record until you have checked the amount. A passport may be required for the transaction.
ATM withdrawals
Use an ATM displaying your card network’s logo and follow the machine’s instructions. Shanghai official guidance says overseas cards can be used at ATMs or cash-recycling machines displaying the relevant network logos. It reports a typical single-withdrawal limit of RMB 3,000 in Shanghai, while warning that your card issuer may impose additional daily or monthly limits. That RMB 3,000 figure is Shanghai-specific guidance, not a nationwide ATM rule.
Before withdrawing, check the machine’s fee and conversion screen and decide whether your issuer or the ATM operator is offering the more favorable currency-conversion route. If one machine declines the card, try another network-compatible machine rather than repeatedly retrying the same transaction.

How much cash can you carry?
The national guide states that visitors may carry up to RMB 20,000 into or out of China per trip. This is a border-carry limit, not a recommendation to travel with that amount. Keep a modest reserve in separate places and use a wallet or card for larger payments when accepted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Transport needs destination-by-destination checking
Transport is where assumptions about payment methods most often fail. The accepted method can differ between rail, metro, airport transfers and local operators, and a payment method that works in one city may not work in another.
Rail and intercity tickets
The 2025 national visitor guide says eligible railway ticket purchases may be paid with foreign bank cards or mobile payment. “Eligible” matters: check the current railway booking channel and the specific journey, and keep a second method available if a card or wallet is declined.
Metro systems
The same guide says metro tickets and passes may accept cards, RMB cash or mobile apps, while some operators support mobile QR entry. Do not assume that every station supports the same option or that a QR code for one city’s system works in another.

Beijing permits overseas-issued Mastercard or Visa tap-to-pay on 27 urban rail lines and suburban line S2, according to the 2025 national guide. This is a location-specific example, not a national promise. Check the current Beijing transport instructions and the operator’s accepted networks before relying on tap-to-pay.

Practical transport preparation
- Look up the destination city’s transport operator before travel and save its current payment instructions.
- Carry enough RMB for a ticket or short transfer if the app, card or phone battery fails.
- Keep your physical card available for gates or ticket machines that accept contactless payment.
- Do not confuse a wallet’s merchant QR payment with a transport QR pass; they may use different enrollment and validation rules.
A pre-departure checklist
- Confirm that your phone can install and update Alipay and/or Weixin Pay and that you can receive verification messages.
- Register the wallet, complete passport verification and link at least one eligible overseas card.
- Ask your issuer about international purchases, mobile-wallet transactions, contactless use, ATM withdrawals, foreign-exchange fees and fraud alerts.
- Carry the physical card linked to the wallet and, if possible, a second card on another accepted network.
- Save your issuer’s emergency contact details and know how to freeze or replace a card.
- Obtain a small amount of RMB through an exchange service or compatible ATM after arrival.
- Check each city’s railway, metro and airport-transport payment instructions instead of relying on a national assumption.
- Keep your phone charged and maintain access to the number or email used for account verification.
What to do when a payment fails
The wallet will not link the card
Recheck the card number and billing details, complete any identity prompt, and ask the issuer whether it rejected the linkage. Try another eligible card if the issuer cannot authorize it. Do not assume that a decline means the wallet itself is unavailable.
The wallet is linked but the merchant rejects the QR payment
Ask whether the merchant accepts that wallet and whether you should scan its code or present your own. If the route is unsupported, pay directly with the physical card if the terminal displays its network, or use RMB cash.
The physical card is declined
Check the terminal’s network logo, try contactless or chip-and-PIN as appropriate, and contact the issuer if multiple compatible terminals decline it. A different merchant or network-compatible terminal may work, but keep cash available rather than repeatedly retrying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe ATM rejects the withdrawal
Confirm that the machine displays your network, check your issuer’s cash-withdrawal settings and daily limit, and try another compatible ATM. Use an exchange service or another payment method if the problem continues.
The phone or connection fails
Use the physical card or cash reserve. For transport, follow the operator’s local ticketing instructions and do not wait until the gate to discover that a wallet QR code is not accepted.
Which method should you use first?
Choose based on the purchase and the backup you have available:
- Routine QR purchase: Try the wallet, then use the physical card or RMB if the merchant’s QR route is unavailable.
- Hotel or major attraction: Look for a supported card-network logo and keep the wallet as a second option.
- Small shop, market or emergency: RMB cash is the safest immediate fallback when acceptance is uncertain.
- Rail or metro: Follow the specific operator’s current rules; do not infer acceptance from another city.
- Large payment: Review the wallet’s fee and limit screen, then choose the method that the merchant and issuer both authorize.
The resilient answer is not “wallet versus card versus cash.” It is a layered setup: a verified wallet for convenience, a physical international card for network-based acceptance, and enough RMB to continue when either digital route fails.
