For most large uploads, use rsync over SSH. It encrypts the transfer, keeps a partial file when a connection drops, shows progress, and can skip data that is already on the VPS when you rerun the command. Use scp for a simple one-time copy, SFTP or rclone when you need an interactive client or tunable concurrency, and object-storage staging when the direct computer-to-VPS route is unreliable or several servers need the same dataset.

Choose the transfer method first
The right method depends less on the file extension or its nominal size than on what happens when the transfer is interrupted, whether you will repeat it, and whether a third-party storage service is acceptable. All four approaches below can use an encrypted SSH transport when connecting directly to a VPS, but they differ substantially in restart behavior and operational overhead.

Why rsync is the default for a large VPS upload
rsync runs through SSH, so authentication and the network transport are protected by the same encrypted channel used for an SSH login. Its key advantage is that a transfer is not necessarily all-or-nothing. With partial-file retention enabled, a disconnected upload can be resumed by running the same command again. For a directory, rsync also compares source and destination content and sends only what is needed, making later deployment runs much faster than copying everything again.

The following command is a practical default for a single large file:
rsync -avP --partial --info=progress2 ./large-file user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/-apreserves the usual file attributes and recurses into directories.-vprints the items being processed.-Pcombines progress output with retention of a partially transferred file. The explicit--partialin the example makes that intent clear even if you later change the progress option.--info=progress2displays aggregate progress for the complete transfer rather than only per-file progress../large-fileis the local path. Replace it with the actual filename or directory.user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/is the remote login, host name or address, and destination directory.
If the SSH service listens on a non-standard port, add -e 'ssh -p PORT', for example:
rsync -avP --partial --info=progress2 -e 'ssh -p 2222' ./large-file user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/When the command is interrupted, reconnect and run the identical command. Rsync examines what is already at the destination and transfers only the missing or changed data. Do not rename or move the partial destination file between attempts; doing so prevents rsync from recognizing it as the same transfer.

Copying a directory: the trailing slash matters
For a directory, decide whether you want the directory itself or only its contents. A trailing slash means “copy the contents of this directory”:
rsync -avP --partial --info=progress2 ./dataset/ user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/Without the trailing slash, rsync normally creates a dataset directory under /srv/uploads/:
rsync -avP --partial --info=progress2 ./dataset user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/That distinction is especially important when a 100 GB dataset is being deployed into an application directory. A wrong slash can leave the application looking in the wrong path even though the transfer itself succeeded.

Limit bandwidth when the upload competes with other traffic
Rsync can cap its transfer rate with --bwlimit. The Rclone documentation uses --bwlimit 10M as an example of a 10 MiB/s upload or download limit; the same value can be used with rsync when you want a predictable ceiling:
rsync -avP --partial --info=progress2 --bwlimit=10M ./large-file user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/The cap protects other users and services on the connection, but it increases elapsed time. Measure the available upstream capacity and choose a limit that leaves headroom for SSH administration, monitoring, and application traffic.
Prepare the VPS before sending gigabytes
Preparation prevents the most expensive failure: transferring for hours and discovering that the destination cannot store, access, or validate the file.
- Check free space. Log in and run
df -h /srv/uploads(or the filesystem that will contain the file). Leave room for the file plus temporary data, extraction overhead, and normal filesystem operation. A compressed archive can expand to several times its upload size. - Create a deliberate destination. As an administrator, create the directory and assign it to the deployment account:
sudo install -d -o deploy -g deploy -m 0750 /srv/uploadsReplace deploy and the group with the account that will actually run or consume the application. Do not routinely upload as root just to bypass a permissions problem.
- Confirm SSH access. Test
ssh user@VPS_HOSTbefore starting a long copy. SSH keys are preferable to passwords for an unattended or repeatable transfer. Use a restricted account where practical, and grant it write access only to the required directory. - Check the path and filesystem. Verify that the destination is mounted, writable, and not subject to a per-user quota. A successful SSH login does not guarantee that
/srv/uploadsexists or that the account can write there. - Keep the source intact. Do not delete or alter the local original until the remote checksum and application-level validation have succeeded.
Using scp for a simple one-off upload
scp is easy to understand and is already present on many systems with an SSH client. For a one-time file copy, use:
scp -o Compression=no ./large-file user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/Disabling SSH compression is sensible for files that are already compressed, such as video, disk images, archives, and many database backups. Compressing such data consumes CPU without materially reducing the bytes sent. For plain text or an uncompressed dump, compression may reduce network traffic, but it can increase CPU use on both endpoints.

Scp is less convenient than rsync for repeated synchronization and fine-grained resume behavior. Check destination capacity first, because a broken scp transfer can leave an incomplete file and a subsequent invocation may not give you the same block-level reuse that rsync provides. If the file is irreplaceable, prefer rsync or use an explicitly resumable SFTP or object-storage workflow.
SFTP and rclone: when you need an interactive or tunable workflow
SFTP is the Secure (or SSH) File Transfer Protocol and runs over SSH version 2. A graphical SFTP client can be useful when an operator needs to browse directories, set permissions, or drag files without memorizing shell syntax. It is also a good fit when a managed SFTP endpoint is part of an existing process.
rclone adds scripting, retries, progress reporting, and a common command structure across local disks, SFTP, and object-storage backends. Configure an SFTP remote named vps with rclone config, then copy the file:

rclone copy ./large-file vps:/srv/uploads/ --progress --retries 5 --low-level-retries 10The copy command does not delete unrelated destination files. That is generally safer for an upload directory than a mirroring command. Rclone describes its sync operation as synchronizing a directory tree from one storage system to another; because synchronization can remove destination files that are absent from the source, use it only after confirming the intended direction and testing with a dry run where appropriate.
Start with the SFTP defaults
Rclone documents a 32 KiB default SFTP chunk size. Its SFTP backend also exposes --sftp-concurrency, --sftp-chunk-size, and concurrent-write controls. Concurrent writes can greatly improve performance, especially to distant servers, but the optimal values depend on the SFTP implementation, latency, CPU, and bandwidth.
Begin with the documented defaults. Increase concurrency or chunk size only after observing the specific server and network. Some servers accept larger packets; others respond to oversized settings with EOF errors, connection losses, or corruption. A faster-looking configuration is not an improvement if the resulting file fails a checksum.

If the connection is unstable, keep the retry settings moderate and inspect the first failure rather than multiplying concurrency immediately. A server-side connection limit, a firewall timeout, or a low memory limit can look like a bandwidth problem.
Object-storage staging for unreliable or multi-server transfers
When the direct workstation-to-VPS route repeatedly drops, place the file in object storage first. Your computer uploads to the storage service, and the VPS pulls from that independent location. The laptop can disconnect after the first leg finishes, and the same object can be downloaded by several VPSs without repeating the original upload.
Rclone supports local storage, SFTP, Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, and many other backends. Its S3 documentation describes multipart uploads for files above the provider’s upload cutoff and automatic chunk-size adjustment to remain below the provider’s part limit. Those features are useful for very large files because failed parts can be retried without restarting the entire object.
The workflow is:
- Configure the object-storage remote with
rclone configand create a private bucket or container. - Upload from the workstation, for example
rclone copy ./large-file staging:/bucket/path/ --progress. - Verify the object exists and keep it until the VPS copy has passed validation.
- Configure an object-storage remote on the VPS or use a temporary signed access method appropriate to the provider.
- Pull the object into the final directory, then compare checksums and validate the application data.
- Delete the staged object according to your retention policy.
Calculate the total cost before choosing this route. Include storage time, request charges, egress from the storage region to the VPS, any retrieval fees, and the geographic distance between the bucket and server. A one-time staging upload can be worth the cost when the direct path is unreliable; routine pipelines should use a region and retention policy that match their data volume.

A transfer finishing without an error means the client believes all bytes were sent; it is not the same as validating the file for your application. For important data, compare a cryptographic checksum on both ends.

sha256sum ./large-file- On the VPS, run:
sha256sum /srv/uploads/large-file- Compare the complete hexadecimal values. They must match exactly.
- For an archive, list or test it after the checksum succeeds, for example with the archive tool’s test mode. For a database dump, perform a syntax or restore validation in a controlled location.
- Only after these checks pass should you remove the local original or the staged object.
Rsync’s comparison helps it decide what to transfer, while a SHA-256 comparison gives you an independent end-to-end integrity check. Use both when the data cannot be recreated.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The transfer stops and the remote file is smaller
With rsync, leave the partial file in place and rerun the same command with -P or --partial. If you used scp, inspect the destination filename and switch to rsync for the retry rather than blindly overwriting it. Confirm that the source file has not changed since the first attempt.
“No space left on device” appears near the end
Run df -h and check inode availability with df -i. Remove only known-safe temporary files or expand the VPS volume; do not delete the partial upload unless you have no way to continue it. After capacity is fixed, rerun rsync and then recalculate the checksum.
Permission denied at the destination
Check ownership and mode with ls -ld /srv/uploads. The SSH account must have write and directory-search permission. Correct the directory’s owner or group, or upload to the account’s home directory and move the file with a controlled privileged operation. Avoid making the destination world-writable.

Return to the documented SFTP defaults, especially the 32 KiB chunk size and conservative concurrency. Test a smaller file, inspect server logs, and raise settings one at a time. If failures appear only after increasing packet size or concurrent writes, revert that change; the server may not support the larger values reliably.
The upload is fast but the application cannot read the file
Check the final path, owner, group, mode, and any mandatory access-control policy. Verify the file type and checksum, then run the application’s own import or validation command. A transfer does not automatically preserve the ownership or service configuration that the application expects.
SSH disconnects when the laptop sleeps
Use a transfer that can run independently of the laptop session. Object-storage staging is the cleanest option when the workstation cannot remain online. Alternatively, start the transfer from a persistent administrative environment and monitor it remotely, then validate the result with a checksum.
A practical decision framework
- Choose rsync over SSH when you control the VPS, SSH is available, and the upload is large, repeatable, or likely to need a restart.
- Choose scp when the file is a straightforward one-off, the connection is dependable, and simplicity matters more than synchronization or partial-transfer efficiency.
- Choose SFTP or rclone SFTP when an interactive browser, an existing SFTP process, retry controls, or tunable concurrency is required. Keep the server’s documented defaults until testing justifies a change.
- Choose object-storage staging when the direct route is unreliable, the source computer cannot stay connected, or several VPSs need the same dataset. Price egress and retention before committing to it.
Whichever method you select, make the destination explicit, check capacity first, use a restricted SSH account, preserve the source, and perform a checksum plus application validation before declaring the upload complete.
