The best starting point for most lake, pond and recreational-water investigations is a microcystin/nodularin ADDA ELISA water test kit. It is a practical rapid screen for the toxin group most often investigated, but it is not proof that water is safe and it will not identify every cyanotoxin. A visible blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom cannot tell you which toxin is present, or whether a toxin is present at all. Select a kit for the specific toxin and sample type, then send any positive, borderline or consequential result to a qualified laboratory for quantitative ELISA or LC/MS confirmation.
This guide explains which kits detect microcystins, cylindrospermopsin, anatoxin-a or saxitoxin; how to test lake water; how to interpret a result against current health guidance; and when a home screen is not adequate for decisions involving drinking water, pets, people or public advisories.
What a cyanobacteria water test kit can—and cannot—tell you
Cyanobacteria are often called blue-green algae. Under favorable conditions they form surface scums, mats or discolored water. Some species and strains produce toxins, while others do not. Even within one bloom, toxin concentration can vary with location, depth, weather, cell disruption and treatment conditions. Looking at the water, smelling it or taking a photograph cannot identify the toxin or establish a safe concentration.

Target toxins and the kit category to look for
| Suspected toxin group | Search terms and method | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Microcystins and nodularins | “Microcystin water test kit,” “microcystin/nodularin ADDA ELISA,” or “cyanotoxin ELISA test kit” | An ADDA response can detect more than 100 identified microcystin congeners, but it does not distinguish which congener is present. |
| Cylindrospermopsin | Cylindrospermopsin ELISA or a laboratory cyanotoxin panel that names cylindrospermopsin | A microcystin kit is not a cylindrospermopsin test. |
| Anatoxin-a or guanitoxin | Anatoxin-a-specific kit or laboratory method | Do not infer an anatoxin result from a microcystin result; the chemical targets and analytical behavior differ. |
| Saxitoxin | Saxitoxin-specific kit or laboratory method | The WHO recreational-water value for saxitoxin is provisional, and a kit still must state its validated matrix and range. |
ELISA means enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. EPA describes commercial ELISA kits as one of the more commonly used cyanotoxin methods because they do not require expensive equipment or extensive training. That convenience makes them good screening tools, not a substitute for a defensible laboratory measurement.
Choose screening or confirmation before you buy
The right product depends on the decision you need to make. A quick field screen can tell you whether further action is warranted. It generally cannot support a regulatory determination, establish a precise concentration near a health threshold, or identify an individual toxin congener.
| Testing approach | Best use | What the result means | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualitative or semi-quantitative field strip, cassette or color test | Rapid triage at a lake, pond or shoreline | Indicates non-detect, a range, or a visual threshold under the kit’s conditions | Fast and portable, but more vulnerable to matrix effects, reading errors and broad result bands |
| Quantitative ELISA | Measuring a named toxin group when a laboratory value is needed | Reports a concentration within the assay’s validated range | Requires controlled procedures, calibration and quality checks; still may not be congener-specific |
| LC/MS or another confirmatory analytical method | Drinking-water decisions, public advisories, investigations and disputed or high-consequence results | Provides a laboratory result for specified analytes, often with stronger selectivity | Requires a qualified laboratory, appropriate sample handling and more time and cost than a field screen |
EPA recommends repeating a detection from a field screening kit with quantitative ELISA or another listed analytical method. Treat that recommendation as part of your purchase decision: a kit is more useful when you already know where a confirmatory sample can be sent.
Why congener coverage matters
Microcystins are a family of related compounds rather than one molecule. ADDA-based immunoassays recognize a structural feature shared by many microcystins and nodularins. EPA notes that this approach can detect more than 100 identified microcystin congeners, but it cannot tell you which congener caused the response. Different congeners can produce different responses in an immunoassay, so the reported value is an assay-equivalent estimate, not a complete chemical inventory.

Check the sample matrix
Read the instructions for the exact water you plan to test: raw lake water, recreational water, drinking water, treated water, or another matrix. Suspended sediment, algae cells, disinfectants, pH and organic material can affect recovery. Some procedures test dissolved toxin in the water; others include a separate step for material trapped in or attached to cells. A kit validated for one matrix should not automatically be applied to another.
The most defensible general-purpose choice: a microcystin ELISA water test kit
For a reader who needs one realistic search phrase, use microcystin ELISA water test kit or microcystin/nodularin ADDA ELISA. This is an established product category explicitly described in EPA detection-method guidance. It is a sensible first screen when local history, a previous laboratory report or the appearance of a bloom makes microcystins or nodularins plausible.
That recommendation has three boundaries:
- It does not screen for cylindrospermopsin, anatoxin-a, guanitoxin or saxitoxin unless the product specifically includes those analytes.
- It does not prove that water is safe when the result is negative, especially if sampling, storage, interference or the kit’s detection limit is unsuitable.
- It does not replace quantitative confirmation when people or animals may drink the water, when an advisory may be issued, or when a treatment decision depends on a concentration.
Choose a cylindrospermopsin, anatoxin-a/guanitoxin or saxitoxin kit only when monitoring history, local authorities or a laboratory plan identifies that target. Avoid assuming that a multi-toxin panel detects every cyanotoxin; verify each named analyte, its method and its validated range.

- Define the decision. Decide whether you are screening a recreational site, checking a private water source, evaluating treated drinking water or collecting evidence for an authority. The required method and confidence level change with the use.
- Confirm the analyte. Make sure the package names microcystins/nodularins and states whether it uses an ADDA immunoassay. If your concern is another toxin, obtain the corresponding specific kit or arrange laboratory testing instead.
- Read sampling, storage and holding-time instructions before collecting. Use the container, volume, preservative, temperature and maximum holding time specified by the manufacturer or laboratory. Do not improvise a storage method and assume the result remains valid.
- Sample safely and representatively. Keep people and animals away from scum and stagnant accumulations. Follow the kit’s guidance on depth and whether to sample clear water, the surface, or both. A single shoreline scoop may not represent an entire lake.
- Document the sample. Record the location, date and time, weather, recent heavy rain or wind, water color, visible scum or mats, and whether the sample is raw, treated or recreational water. Give the sample a unique identifier if it may go to a laboratory.
- Run the control and test steps exactly. Observe the stated reagent volumes, mixing, incubation, wash and read times. Do not extend a color-development period to make a faint line “stronger,” and do not read outside the specified time window.
- Record the raw observation and result. Keep a photograph only as a supplement; write down the control status, visual band or numerical reading, dilution used and any result that falls near the kit’s decision boundary.
- Preserve a confirmation option. If the result is positive, borderline, unexpected or important to a health decision, collect and submit a properly handled sample for quantitative ELISA or LC/MS confirmation. Ask the laboratory whether it measures the same toxin group and whether its sample handling is compatible with your collection.
How to interpret concentrations without overclaiming safety
The World Health Organization’s 2024 recreational-water table gives the following context values:
| Toxin | WHO 2024 recreational-water value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Microcystin | 24 µg/L | Recreational-water context value; not a universal legal limit |
| Cylindrospermopsin | 6 µg/L | Recreational-water context value; not a universal legal limit |
| Anatoxin-a | 60 µg/L | Recreational-water context value; not a universal legal limit |
| Saxitoxin | 30 µg/L | Provisional recreational-water value; not a universal legal limit |
These figures are not interchangeable with drinking-water standards, local closure criteria or a guarantee that exposure below a value is harmless. Jurisdictions can set different action levels, and authorities may act on a visible bloom or other evidence before a laboratory number is available.
Below, near or above a kit threshold
- Non-detect or below the reporting threshold: This means the target was not detected under that kit’s conditions. It does not establish that other cyanotoxins are absent or that the sample represents the whole water body.
- Borderline or unclear: Treat an ambiguous band, control failure, out-of-range color or result near the threshold as unresolved. Repeat according to the instructions or send the sample to a laboratory.
- Positive: Keep people and animals out of the affected water and arrange confirmatory testing. Do not dilute, average or reinterpret the result to make it appear acceptable.
- High-consequence use: For drinking water, food preparation, livestock, pets, a public beach or a formal advisory, rely on a qualified laboratory and the responsible public-health or water authority rather than a consumer screen alone.
Safety while you wait for results
Do not let people or animals swim in, wade through, drink or play in visibly scummy, foamy or discolored water while results are pending. Prevent pets from licking algae or contaminated fur; rinse an animal with clean water if exposure occurs and contact a veterinarian promptly if it becomes ill. Follow local public-health instructions, because a bloom can shift or intensify after your sample is collected.

Do not use a home water result to diagnose a person. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that there are no clinically available diagnostic tests for toxins made by cyanobacteria and directs water-specimen testing to specialized laboratories. Seek medical advice for symptoms after suspected exposure rather than trying to confirm illness with a consumer kit.

Buying checklist for a cyanotoxin kit
- Named analyte: Verify the exact toxin or toxin group, not just “algae” or “cyanobacteria.”
- Method: Identify whether it is a qualitative screen, semi-quantitative assay, quantitative ELISA or another method.
- Detection and reporting range: Confirm that the stated range is relevant to the decision and to the units you will receive.
- Matrix: Check validation for freshwater, recreational water, raw water or treated drinking water as applicable.
- Cross-reactivity: Read how the assay responds to toxin variants and whether results are reported as an equivalent, such as an ADDA-based microcystin value.
- Controls and expiration: Ensure the package includes valid controls, storage requirements and an expiration date that covers your planned use.
- Sampling logistics: Confirm the required container, volume, temperature, holding time and shipping procedure before collecting.
- Confirmation pathway: Identify a qualified laboratory that can perform quantitative ELISA or LC/MS for the same analyte.
- Documentation: Prefer instructions that explain invalid results, interference, interpretation and quality control rather than presenting only a color chart.
Common failure modes and how to recover
The kit says “algae” but does not name a toxin
Do not treat that as a cyanotoxin result. Look for the analyte list and method. If none is provided, use a product or laboratory that identifies the toxin target.
The control line or control value fails
Stop interpretation. Check reagent storage, expiration, timing, sample volume and temperature, then repeat with a new test. A failed control is not a negative result.
The sample is very cloudy or full of algae
Follow the manufacturer’s clarification, dilution or extraction instructions if provided. Do not invent a dilution factor; it changes the reported concentration. If the matrix is outside the instructions, submit it to a laboratory with a description of its condition.
The result conflicts with the appearance of the water
Appearance and toxin concentration do not reliably track each other. Keep the site closed to contact until the conflict is resolved, repeat using correct sampling and obtain laboratory confirmation for any consequential decision.

A negative microcystin test follows a suspected bloom
Check whether the bloom could involve another toxin, whether the kit covers dissolved and cell-associated material as required, and whether the sample was collected from the relevant location. A negative result for one analyte does not rule out cylindrospermopsin, anatoxin-a, guanitoxin or saxitoxin.
When to skip home screening and use a laboratory
Go directly to a qualified laboratory when the water may be used for drinking, food preparation, livestock or commercial operations; when a public swimming area may need an advisory; when a child or pet may have been exposed and the result could affect care; when legal or regulatory documentation is required; or when the suspected toxin is not covered by an available field kit.
Before shipping, verify the provider’s accreditation, analyte panel, reporting units, detection limits, turnaround time, geographic service area and sample-preservation requirements. Ask whether the laboratory reports total toxin, dissolved toxin, cell-associated toxin or an assay-equivalent value. Those details determine whether the result answers your actual question.
Bottom line for choosing a kit
Use a toxin-specific ELISA field kit as a screening step, with a microcystin/nodularin ADDA kit the most broadly defensible starting category for suspected microcystin blooms. Match the kit to the suspected analyte and water matrix, document sampling conditions, and treat every positive, borderline or high-consequence result as a reason for quantitative laboratory confirmation. No single consumer strip or panel detects every cyanotoxin or can certify that water is safe.
