For a large MySQL database, start with a dedicated-CPU, memory-optimized VPS and size it from the database’s working set, not its total file size. DigitalOcean is the strongest directly documented fit in the available 2026 material: its Memory-Optimized Droplets provide 8GB RAM per vCPU for high-performance SQL or NoSQL databases, while Storage-Optimized Droplets use NVMe storage for large data workloads. AWS Lightsail is a useful bundled-price benchmark: its 32GB memory-optimized Linux bundle is listed at $144 per month for 4 vCPUs, 320GB storage and 6TB transfer. Neither description is an independent MySQL benchmark, so the final choice still depends on I/O limits, region, backups, recovery objectives and your operating capacity.
What “best” means for a large MySQL database
A large database needs predictable resources more than the biggest advertised disk. The VPS must keep the active InnoDB data and indexes in memory, sustain query and replication work on reserved CPU, provide low-latency storage, and recover within an acceptable time after corruption, host failure or operator error.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use these requirements to define the target before comparing plans:
- Database footprint: total data, indexes, binary logs, temporary growth and free space required for online maintenance.
- Working set: the rows and indexes that must remain hot in the InnoDB buffer pool during normal traffic.
- Read/write mix: write-heavy workloads stress CPU, log flushing and storage latency; read-heavy workloads may benefit more from memory and read replicas.
- Concurrency: peak active connections, transaction rate and the number of simultaneous reporting or batch jobs.
- Recovery point objective (RPO): how much committed data the business can lose.
- Recovery time objective (RTO): how quickly service must return after a failure.
- Topology: single primary, replicas, cross-region standby, or an application that can tolerate downtime while a replacement server is built.
A VPS that fits the data today but cannot add memory, CPU or storage without a disruptive migration is not a good production choice. Confirm the upgrade path before deployment.

Why a dedicated-CPU, memory-optimized VPS is the starting point
MySQL performance is often limited by memory and storage latency rather than by the raw number of CPU cores. A larger InnoDB buffer pool reduces repeated reads from disk, while dedicated CPU prevents unrelated tenants from competing with query execution, replication and maintenance jobs.
DigitalOcean states that its Memory-Optimized Droplets include 8GB RAM for each vCPU and are intended for workloads including high-performance SQL or NoSQL databases. That ratio is a comparison starting point, not a universal MySQL sizing rule: the operating system, connections, temporary tables, monitoring and failover processes also need memory.
Recommended Free Tools
For data sets whose active pages cannot fit in memory, DigitalOcean describes Storage-Optimized Droplets as using NVMe storage for large data workloads. NVMe can reduce latency and increase throughput compared with regular SSD storage, but the plan description does not establish a provider-neutral MySQL benchmark. Verify the actual provisioned IOPS, burst behavior, queue limits and durability terms for the region you will use.
Plans and architectures to compare
| Option | What is documented | Where it fits | What remains to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Memory-Optimized Droplet | 8GB RAM per vCPU; positioned for high-performance SQL and NoSQL databases (DigitalOcean, 2026 page). | Primary candidate when the working set needs substantial RAM and predictable CPU is available in the selected size. | Exact vCPU generation, CPU reservation policy, storage performance, regional price, transfer allowance, backup retention and restore process. |
| DigitalOcean Storage-Optimized Droplet | NVMe storage; positioned for large data workloads (DigitalOcean, 2026 page). | Data sets that exceed practical memory capacity or require fast local database storage. | Usable capacity after system overhead, provisioned IOPS, durability, backup design and scale-up path. |
| DigitalOcean Premium Droplet | Shared CPU using the latest two CPU generations available and NVMe SSDs, described as delivering faster performance (DigitalOcean, 2026 page). | Development, bursty workloads or cases where shared CPU is acceptable. | Whether CPU contention or throttling is acceptable for sustained production queries, plus the same I/O and backup checks. |
| AWS Lightsail 32GB memory-optimized Linux bundle | $144 per month, 4 vCPUs, 32GB RAM, 320GB storage and 6TB transfer (AWS, 2026 documentation). | A simple, predictable bundled-price reference point for a medium-sized single VPS. | Transfer overage charges, storage performance, backup retention and restore options, regional availability and upgrade interruption. |
| AWS Lightsail larger memory bundles | 64GB, 128GB, 192GB and 256GB options are published (AWS, 2026 documentation). | When the 32GB bundle is too small and a larger fixed bundle is operationally simpler. | Current price and exact CPU, disk, I/O, transfer and SLA details for the chosen region and bundle. |
| Managed MySQL service | Not specified in the cited plan material. | Teams that value automated patching, backups, failover and recovery workflows over the lowest raw VPS cost. | Engine versions, extensions, maintenance windows, networking, replica behavior, RPO/RTO guarantees and total service cost. |
The published descriptions establish intended use and headline resources, not comparative query-per-second results. No independent, provider-neutral MySQL performance figure is established here.
How much RAM MySQL needs on a VPS
Start with the working set, then add room for everything that is not part of the buffer pool. InnoDB normally receives the largest allocation because it caches table and index pages. The remaining memory must cover the operating system and filesystem cache, per-connection buffers, temporary tables, sort and join work, replication, monitoring, backups and failover tooling.
Do not size a server by adding the database file size to a matching amount of RAM. A 500GB database can perform well when the frequently accessed portion is small, while a much smaller but randomly accessed data set can thrash storage if its hot indexes do not fit.

A practical sizing worksheet
- Measure the total data and index size, binary-log retention and expected growth over the planning period.
- Estimate the hot working set from production access patterns, not from a single quiet-day sample.
- Reserve memory for the operating system, connection count, temporary tables, replication and observability.
- Select a memory-optimized size whose available RAM exceeds that combined requirement without operating at the edge of capacity.
- Recheck after peak-load tests; sustained swapping is a sizing failure, not a tuning strategy.
The 8GB-per-vCPU ratio documented for DigitalOcean Memory-Optimized Droplets is useful when comparing shape families. It does not mean every vCPU requires 8GB, nor that a database should allocate all visible memory to innodb_buffer_pool_size.
Illustrative decision example
Suppose measurement shows that the application’s hot pages require about 24GB, while connections, temporary work, the operating system, replication and monitoring need several additional gigabytes. A 32GB class server may be a starting test target, but it should not be approved solely because the headline RAM equals the measured hot set. Leave capacity for bursts and growth, then confirm with memory pressure and disk-read telemetry during a representative load test.
CPU: dedicated versus shared
Dedicated CPU is preferable for sustained query execution, write-heavy transactions, replication apply, schema changes and backup compression. Compare the actual vCPU generation and whether the provider can throttle or oversubscribe the instance; providers do not expose these policies uniformly.
Shared CPU can be reasonable for staging, low-duty-cycle applications or workloads that have measured spare capacity. DigitalOcean describes Premium Droplets as shared CPU with the latest two available CPU generations and NVMe SSDs. That is a product description, not proof that a shared instance will meet a production latency target under contention.

Storage: why NVMe matters and what it does not solve
MySQL performs many small, latency-sensitive reads and writes. NVMe storage can improve response time and throughput versus regular SSD, especially when the working set spills beyond memory or when redo logs and checkpoints are active. DigitalOcean explicitly describes NVMe as faster than regular SSD storage.

Ask for the values that a headline “NVMe” label does not provide:
- Provisioned random-read and random-write IOPS and throughput.
- Latency under queue depth, not only an uncrowded sequential test.
- Burst limits and what happens after burst credits are consumed.
- Whether storage is local and ephemeral or durable through host failure.
- Volume expansion limits and whether resizing requires a restart.
- How database volumes, snapshots and backup copies are separated across failure domains.
Keep redo logs, data files and temporary work on storage with predictable latency. Do not treat a fast primary disk as a backup: a host, volume or operator error can destroy both the database and an on-host copy.
Backups, point-in-time recovery and restore testing
A large MySQL VPS is incomplete without a recovery design. Set a snapshot schedule, retain multiple generations, stream binary logs for point-in-time recovery when the RPO requires it, and store at least one copy outside the primary failure domain.
DigitalOcean’s product page states that weekly Droplet backups cost 20% of the Droplet cost. The statement identifies the recurring percentage but does not establish retention length, restore timing or regional durability; verify those terms for the exact product.
AWS Lightsail bundles transfer with the instance. Its 32GB memory-optimized Linux bundle lists 6TB of transfer, but outbound traffic beyond the included amount can incur charges. Confirm how backup traffic and restore traffic are billed in the selected region.
Recovery checklist
- Define the maximum acceptable data loss and downtime in writing.
- Schedule full backups and retain enough generations to cover silent corruption or accidental deletion.
- Enable binary-log archiving if point-in-time recovery is required.
- Encrypt backups and restrict restore credentials.
- Perform a full restore to an isolated server on a regular schedule.
- Record the elapsed restore time, required commands and validation queries.
- Keep the documented procedure accessible when the primary host is unavailable.
A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a measured recovery capability.

Network, region and replication design
Choose a region close to the application’s users and, more importantly, close to the systems that issue most database requests. Cross-region replication adds network latency and transfer cost; it can still be justified for disaster recovery.
Check the region-specific transfer allowance and overage price before committing. The 6TB figure on the Lightsail 32GB bundle is a bundled allowance, not a guarantee that every region or traffic pattern has the same economics.
For replicas, document whether replication is asynchronous, how much lag is acceptable, and what happens when the primary fails. A single VPS in one region has a simpler bill but a larger failure domain than a primary-plus-standby design.

|---|---|---|
| AWS Lightsail 32GB memory-optimized Linux | $144/month | AWS figure for 4 vCPUs, 32GB RAM, 320GB storage and 6TB transfer, documented in 2026; regional terms and overage pricing still require confirmation. |

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Self-managed VPS or managed database?
Choose a self-managed VPS when
- Your team can patch the operating system and MySQL promptly.
- You can monitor replication, disk latency, memory pressure, failed backups and certificate expiry.
- You have tested failover and restore procedures.
- Controlling the operating system, extensions or filesystem layout is important.
Choose a managed database when
- The RTO requires automated failover or a tested replacement process.
- There is no reliable on-call owner for database maintenance.
- Backups, patching and replica provisioning would otherwise be built from scratch.
- A higher service bill is acceptable in exchange for reduced operational risk.
A VPS can be cheaper on the invoice while being more expensive in staff time and outage exposure. Make that trade explicit rather than comparing only monthly compute.

Step-by-step method to select the plan
- Write the workload profile. Record database size, hot working set, growth, read/write ratio, peak connections, transaction rate, RPO and RTO.
- Set the memory floor. Add the measured working set to operating-system, connection, temporary-work, replication and monitoring needs. Select a memory-optimized shape with headroom.
- Set the CPU floor. Prefer dedicated CPU for sustained production work and compare generation, steal time and throttling policy.
- Set the storage floor. Match NVMe or SSD performance to measured random I/O, redo-log flushing and checkpoint behavior. Confirm durability and expansion.
- Model recovery. Price snapshots, off-site copies, binary-log storage, restore bandwidth and a standby if the RTO requires one.
- Model network cost. Select the region, calculate application and replication traffic, and price transfer overages.
- Run a representative test. Restore a sanitized production copy, replay realistic queries and include backups, replication and maintenance in the test window.
- Document the upgrade path. Confirm whether memory, CPU and storage can be increased in place and what interruption that change causes.
- Approve only after a restore drill. Record recovery time and data validation results before sending production traffic.
Production setup checklist
- Use a supported Linux distribution and a supported MySQL release.
- Restrict database access to application and administration networks; do not expose MySQL publicly without a documented reason.
- Encrypt client connections and protect credentials outside the database host.
- Configure time synchronization, log rotation, alerting and disk-capacity thresholds.
- Monitor buffer-pool hit behavior, query latency percentiles, lock waits, redo pressure, replication lag, IOPS, throughput, CPU steal and swap activity.
- Keep temporary files and binary logs from silently consuming the volume.
- Patch during a maintenance window and rehearse rollback.
- Test schema changes on a replica or staging copy before applying them to the primary.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying disk capacity instead of memory
A large volume does not make a random-read workload fast. Measure the working set and choose RAM first, then size durable storage for data, growth, logs and backups.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Assuming NVMe guarantees a result
NVMe is a device class, not a MySQL latency guarantee. Verify provisioned limits, queue behavior and durability, then test with production-shaped traffic.
Allocating all RAM to InnoDB
Connections, temporary tables, the operating system and recovery tools still need memory. Leaving no headroom leads to swapping or process termination during peaks.
Counting snapshots as a complete backup plan
Snapshots may not provide the retention, geographic separation or point-in-time granularity your RPO requires. Add binary-log archiving and perform restores.
Comparing prices without transfer and recovery costs
A bundled transfer allowance can simplify budgeting, while overages can change the total. Include backup storage, replication traffic and restore bandwidth in the same worksheet.
Using a shared CPU for an unpredictable primary
Shared CPU may be adequate for low-duty-cycle workloads, but sustained query and maintenance latency requires measured evidence. Use dedicated CPU when contention would violate the service objective.
Verdict
For most large, self-managed MySQL deployments, begin with a dedicated-CPU, memory-optimized VPS and size RAM from the measured working set. DigitalOcean has the clearest directly relevant specification in the available 2026 material: 8GB per vCPU for Memory-Optimized Droplets, with Storage-Optimized NVMe options for data-heavy workloads. Use AWS Lightsail’s $144/month 32GB bundle as a transparent budgeting reference when 4 vCPUs, 32GB RAM, 320GB storage and 6TB transfer match the workload. Select the winner only after checking regional I/O, transfer, backup and restore terms and proving the RPO and RTO with a real recovery drill.
