Best overall approach: choose a VPS that meets WooCommerce’s current software baseline, start with the starter capacity for a small store, and verify checkout under load before going live. In practical terms, that means PHP 8.3 or newer, MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or newer, HTTPS, at least a 256 MB WordPress memory limit, and a starting VPS around 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM. Stores with steady traffic generally need about 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM. No independent benchmark establishes a single fastest provider, so the candidates below should be treated as testable options rather than a proven ranking.
What makes a VPS suitable for WooCommerce in 2026?
A WooCommerce store is more demanding than a brochure site because every cart, checkout and account request can execute PHP code, query the database and update session or order data. The best VPS is therefore not simply the one with the lowest monthly price or the biggest advertised storage number. It must provide a current software stack, enough CPU and memory for PHP workers and the database, fast storage, HTTPS and a way to absorb uncached checkout traffic.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →WooCommerce’s current server recommendations are the minimum compatibility gate. Capacity is a separate decision: a server can meet every version requirement and still run out of memory during a promotion or become CPU-bound when several shoppers check out at once.
The practical decision
- Small or newly launched store: use the starter capacity in the sizing table below, then measure real PHP and database usage.
- Growing store with regular orders: move to the steady-traffic tier before CPU saturation or swap use appears.
- High-traffic or operationally sensitive store: consider a managed WooCommerce service or a larger VPS with tested failover, backups and monitoring.
Official WooCommerce requirements to check before buying
The WooCommerce Server Recommendations documentation lists PHP 8.3 or newer (tested up to PHP 8.4), MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.6 or newer, HTTPS, a WordPress memory limit of at least 256 MB, and WordPress 6.9 or newer. These are the current baseline figures captured for this guide.

| Component | Current baseline | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| PHP | 8.3 or newer; tested through 8.4 | Check the hosting control panel or run php -v over SSH. Confirm the PHP version used by the web service, not only the command-line version. |
| Database | MySQL 8.0 or newer, or MariaDB 10.6 or newer | Use the database server version command or the provider dashboard. A VPS that still defaults to MySQL 5.6 or MariaDB 10.4 is below this baseline. |
| WordPress | 6.9 or newer | Check Dashboard > Updates and keep a rollback backup before upgrading. |
| WordPress memory limit | At least 256 MB | Look under Tools > Site Health or in the Site Health information screen. Also confirm the PHP memory_limit value. |
| Transport security | HTTPS for the entire store | Install a valid TLS certificate, force HTTPS redirects and verify that checkout, payment callbacks and admin pages do not load mixed content. |
The same WooCommerce page records a legacy fallback of PHP 7.4 or newer, MySQL 5.6 or newer or MariaDB 10.4 or newer. Treat that fallback as compatibility information for older installations, not as a sensible target for a new 2026 deployment.
How much CPU and RAM does WooCommerce need?
There is no official WooCommerce CPU/RAM sizing table. Published guidance varies: some guides describe 2 GB RAM and 2 cores for a small shop, 4 GB and 4 cores for a growing shop, and 8 GB or more with 8 or more cores for high traffic. Other guidance puts 4 GB RAM at the practical minimum once WooCommerce, a page builder and several plugins run together. A defensible starting plan is therefore 2 vCPU with 4 GB RAM, with a move to 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM as traffic and concurrent administration increase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Store situation | Working VPS size | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Development, catalog build or low order volume | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM | PHP worker saturation, database CPU, available memory and swap activity. |
| Steady traffic, frequent orders or concurrent admin work | 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM | Checkout latency during peaks, database lock waits, object-cache hit rate and disk I/O. |
| Large catalog, campaigns or sustained concurrency | 8 GB RAM or more and additional vCPU as measured | Application-level timings, queue backlogs, slow queries and resource use during a representative load test. |
A 256 MB PHP memory limit is the floor, not a promise that the whole server needs only 256 MB. One secondary guide suggests 512 MB for busy shops. WordPress defaults are often reported at roughly 40 MB for front-end requests and 256 MB for administration; WooCommerce, page builders and plugins can consume that headroom quickly. Set limits deliberately and leave RAM for the database, web server, object cache and the operating system.

Why checkout performance depends on more than a CDN
Product and category pages can often be served from a full-page cache. Cart, checkout and my-account pages generally cannot be treated the same way because they contain customer-specific sessions, totals and order data. Those requests reach PHP and the database, so a CDN alone cannot make a constrained VPS handle concurrent checkouts.
The four performance levers
- PHP workers: each worker processes a request. Too few workers create a queue; too many consume memory and can overload the database.
- Persistent object cache: Redis or another persistent object cache keeps frequently requested options, transients and query results out of repeated database work. Confirm whether it is included, shared or an extra service.
- NVMe storage: fast storage reduces latency for database reads, writes, logs and background tasks. It does not compensate for insufficient RAM or CPU.
- OPcache: enable PHP OPcache with PHP 8.3 or newer so compiled PHP bytecode can be reused instead of rebuilt for every request.
One vendor guide gives illustrative worker ranges of 2–6 on a shared pool, 15 or more guaranteed and 30 or more on a dedicated tier. Those figures are provider-specific, not a universal WooCommerce requirement; ask for the actual worker limit, whether workers are reserved for your account and how memory is calculated.
VPS candidates worth testing
The following figures come from provider-review snippets rather than independent measurements. Prices were not verified directly and can change; use them as questions to validate during procurement, not as current quotations.

| Candidate | Reported entry specification | Reported price | Important unknowns to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hetzner Cloud | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe | About €5.49 per month in one review | PHP worker allowance, managed backups, support scope, database administration and the exact data-center region. |
| DigitalOcean | 2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 50 GB SSD | About $12 per month in one review | The reported 2 GB is below the 4 GB starting guidance; managed MySQL is available as an add-on, with its separate cost and limits to verify. |
| ScalaHosting | Entry dedicated-resource plan reported at 2 GB RAM and 2 cores | About $11–$15 per month in one review | Whether the plan is fully managed, the database version, worker limits, backup retention and upgrade pricing. |
| Kinsta | Managed WooCommerce alternative; no comparable VPS specification stated | Not stated in the captured material | Plan-level visit or resource limits, staging, backups, PHP workers and overage policy. |
| WP Engine | Managed high-traffic WooCommerce alternative; no comparable VPS specification stated | Reported at $25 or more per month in one review | Exact plan, included environments, traffic limits, staging, support coverage and database constraints. |
No independent TTFB or checkout-time benchmark was found across these options. A low price, NVMe label or a large vCPU number is not evidence of faster checkout. Require a staging test with your own theme, extensions, catalog and payment flow before committing.
VPS or managed WooCommerce hosting?
Choose a self-managed VPS when
- You can patch the operating system, PHP, web server and database on a schedule.
- You have a tested backup and restore process, monitoring and someone responsible for incidents.
- You need root access, custom services or predictable dedicated resources.
- You are willing to tune PHP-FPM, the database, object cache and firewall rules.
Choose managed hosting when
- Application uptime and checkout support matter more than root-level customization.
- You do not want to maintain OS security updates, database backups and service restarts.
- You need managed staging, migration help or a support team familiar with WooCommerce incidents.
Managed hosting usually trades some low-level control for operational assistance. Compare the actual service: backups, restore testing, staging, PHP version choices, worker limits, object caching, support response and traffic or overage rules matter more than the word “managed” in a plan name.
Deploying a WooCommerce VPS safely
- Select a region close to customers and payment services. Check data residency, latency and the provider’s backup locations before ordering. Choose a plan that meets the software baseline and has room for the database and cache, not only WordPress itself.
- Install a supported operating system and web stack. Use a currently maintained Linux distribution, Nginx or Apache, PHP 8.3 or newer, PHP-FPM, MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or newer, and a TLS certificate. Remove unused services and create a non-root administrative account.
- Set PHP limits deliberately. Set the WordPress memory limit to at least 256 MB, then size
upload_max_filesize,post_max_size,max_execution_timeandmax_input_varsfor your product imports and extensions. Keep the PHP-FPM process limit within available RAM. - Deploy WordPress and WooCommerce on staging first. Enable HTTPS before importing customer or order data. Verify permalinks, scheduled actions, webhooks, transactional email and payment-provider callbacks.
- Configure database and object caching. Use a persistent object cache where supported, protect it from public access and confirm that cache invalidation works when products, stock and orders change.
- Enable OPcache and inspect logs. Watch PHP-FPM, web-server, database and WooCommerce scheduled-action logs for timeouts, fatal errors, lock waits and repeated slow queries.
- Automate backups and test a restore. Keep at least one backup outside the VPS. Restore the database and files to a separate environment and record how long recovery takes.
- Load-test before DNS cutover. Test browsing, cart, checkout, payment-return handling and administration with production-like data. Do not send real payment transactions during synthetic testing.
How to load-test checkout on staging
A useful test reproduces the expensive paths that page caching avoids. Create representative products, tax rules, shipping methods, coupons and customer accounts. Exercise anonymous browsing separately from logged-in cart and checkout sessions.

- Record a baseline with no load: time to first byte, total response time, PHP-FPM busy workers, database CPU, memory, disk latency and object-cache hit rate.
- Ramp virtual users gradually instead of starting at the peak. Include product views, search, add-to-cart, cart refresh, checkout form submission and account pages.
- Watch for queueing. Rising response time while CPU is moderate often indicates too few PHP workers or database waits; rising swap use indicates insufficient memory.
- Repeat the test after enabling OPcache and object caching. Confirm that stock, cart totals, coupons and order records remain correct.
- Set an acceptance threshold that reflects your business, such as a maximum checkout response time and an error-rate ceiling. Keep the raw results with the deployment record.
Do not claim a provider is “fastest” from a generic benchmark. Hardware, region, WordPress version, extensions, cache configuration and catalog size can change the result substantially.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Scaling a WooCommerce VPS without guesswork
Scale vertically first
If monitoring shows CPU saturation, insufficient memory or PHP-worker queues, increase vCPU or RAM and repeat the same test. A larger plan is usually simpler than introducing multiple application nodes while the database remains single-server.
Reduce application work
- Remove plugins that duplicate functionality or execute expensive work on every request.
- Review slow database queries and oversized autoloaded options.
- Move image processing, exports and other heavy jobs away from the checkout path where the extension permits it.
- Use full-page caching for cacheable catalog traffic while explicitly excluding cart, checkout and account pages.
Separate services only when measurements justify it
A separate managed database, object-cache service or worker node can improve isolation, but each adds network latency, credentials and failure modes. Make the change only after you can identify which component is limiting the current deployment.

Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | First corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout becomes slow while catalog pages remain fast | Uncached PHP or database contention | Inspect PHP-FPM queues, database waits and object-cache hits; do not respond by adding only CDN capacity. |
| Random 502 or 504 responses | PHP workers exhausted, worker timeouts or an overloaded database | Check web-server and PHP-FPM logs, then adjust worker counts and timeouts only after confirming memory headroom. |
| White-screen or fatal-memory errors | PHP memory limit too low or a plugin leak | Confirm the effective PHP and WordPress limits, disable the offending extension on staging and profile memory before increasing limits. |
| Orders or stock updates appear inconsistent | Aggressive page/object caching or concurrent database contention | Exclude cart, checkout, account and dynamic fragments from full-page caching and verify object-cache invalidation. |
| Disk usage rises unexpectedly | Logs, backups, image derivatives or database growth | Set retention policies, rotate logs, move backups off-server and monitor database and media growth. |
| Updates fail after deployment | Unsupported PHP/database version, file permissions or insufficient disk space | Check the official version baseline, filesystem ownership, available space and restore point before retrying. |
Budgeting beyond the advertised VPS price
The monthly server figure is only one part of the operating cost. Budget for backups, monitoring, TLS management if not included, object-cache or managed-database add-ons, transactional email, staging capacity, support and the staff time required for patching and incident response.
Provider snippets in the comparison table are not guaranteed current prices, and the reported plans do not all offer equivalent resources. Compare like with like: dedicated versus shared CPU, NVMe versus SSD, included backup space, data-transfer limits, database management and support. A cheaper 2 GB plan can cost more in lost orders if it spends peak periods in swap or cannot maintain enough PHP workers.
Final buying checklist
- PHP 8.3 or newer is available and is the version used by the web service.
- MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or newer is available.
- WordPress 6.9 or newer and WooCommerce can be updated safely.
- HTTPS certificates, automatic renewal and forced redirects are supported.
- The effective WordPress memory limit is at least 256 MB, with additional RAM for the database and cache.
- The plan has a clear PHP-worker allowance and a documented upgrade path.
- Persistent object caching and OPcache are supported.
- Backups are automated, stored separately and restorable.
- A staging environment can reproduce checkout with production-like data.
- You can monitor CPU, memory, swap, disk latency, PHP queues, database waits and application errors.
- You have load-tested checkout before accepting real orders.
Verdict
For most new WooCommerce stores, begin with a VPS around 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM that offers the current PHP, database, HTTPS and memory baseline. Move to roughly 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM when traffic, orders or concurrent administration become steady. Among the named candidates, the reported Hetzner Cloud specification aligns most closely with that starting capacity, while the reported DigitalOcean entry plan falls below it on RAM; both still require verification of worker limits, backups, support and regional performance. Managed alternatives may be the better choice when patching, recovery and checkout support are more important than root access. In every case, staging load tests—not marketing labels or unverified rankings—should decide the final deployment.
