For most Nextcloud deployments, the best starting point in 2026 is a VPS with 2–4 vCPUs, 4–8 GB of RAM, fast SSD or NVMe storage, MariaDB or PostgreSQL, and Redis. A 1–3-person instance can usually start at 2 vCPUs and 4 GB RAM. A 5–20-person team should plan on about 4 vCPUs and 8 GB RAM, with more capacity for photo previews, background jobs, or Collabora Online.
Our top pick is Antihost, a self-managed Linux VPS with NVMe storage and full root access, followed by Hetzner, Contabo, and DigitalOcean. Still, no single provider fits every workload: choose on active-user count, storage and backup needs, CPU consistency, location, and renewal pricing—not on the cheapest headline offer. The figures below are planning guidance rather than official Nextcloud limits, and provider prices and specifications can change during 2026.
Quick verdict: which VPS fits which Nextcloud workload?
| Provider | What it is good for | Published 2026 example | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Antihost | Self-managed Nextcloud on a Linux VPS with full root access, NVMe storage, and a 14-day free trial | AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, NVMe, 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64 GB RAM; see the current plans | Self-managed with no cPanel, so you install and maintain the stack yourself. Regions are USA East, the Netherlands, and Ukraine. |
| Hetzner | Low-cost general-purpose Nextcloud with good NVMe value | CX22: 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe; one listing reports €5.49 per month | Another listing reports $4.15 per month for the same plan. A 37.6% shared-vCPU increase was reported for June 15, 2026; verify the live regional price. |
| Contabo | Large file libraries where RAM and disk capacity matter most | Listings include 400 GB NVMe with 6 GB RAM for under $6 per month, and a 4 GB plan at €5.99 per month | Listings disagree on exact plans, and one review reports throughput fluctuation at peak times. |
| DigitalOcean | Predictable interface, documentation, and optional managed database | 2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 50 GB SSD at $12 per month | That entry size is below the recommended RAM for a team installation; select a larger plan for multi-user use. |
Prices are examples reported in 2026 listings, not guaranteed quotations. Billing currency, region, tax, commitment term, storage type, bandwidth policy, and later price changes can alter the total.
Size the VPS by active users and workload
Count people who use the server concurrently, not every account ever created. A dormant account consumes little CPU, while simultaneous uploads, thumbnail generation, searches, and office editing can consume several cores.

| Workload | Starting specification | Storage planning | What may require an upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal use or 1–3 active users | 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM | 50–100 GB fast storage | Large photo imports, many previews, or several simultaneous synchronizations |
| Family or 5–20 active users | 4 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM | 200 GB or more, preferably NVMe | Heavy search, many background jobs, shared folders, and office collaboration |
| Large photo library or frequent Collabora Online use | 4–8 vCPUs, 16 GB RAM | Capacity based on originals, previews, versions, and backups | Concurrent document editing, preview storms, video files, or growth beyond the initial disk |
A third-party 2026 guide suggests 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM for a very small instance but does not publish a user-count matrix. Treat that as a lower-bound estimate, not a service guarantee. Starting at the middle tier and measuring real CPU, memory, I/O, and queue usage is safer than buying the smallest plan and hoping it scales.
Why a bare PHP number is not a VPS recommendation
Nextcloud’s administration guidance lists a minimum of 128 MB and recommends 512 MB per PHP process. It also recommends a PHP memory_limit of at least 512 MB. Those figures describe PHP workers, not the complete machine. The VPS must also hold the database, web server, operating system, Redis, APCu, cron workers, preview generation, logs, and monitoring. Several PHP workers can exist at once, so multiplying a per-process figure by the expected concurrency is a more useful sanity check than treating 512 MB as total server RAM.
Choose storage for the files you will actually keep
Estimate originals, previews, versions, and backups
Personal installations commonly begin with 50–100 GB. Families and small teams should usually start at 200 GB or more. The user-visible files are only part of the requirement: photo previews, deleted-file retention, file versions, application data, database growth, and temporary uploads also consume space. A separate backup target is preferable; counting the only VPS disk as both production storage and backup is not a recovery plan.
HDD versus SSD and NVMe
HDD-backed plans are cheaper and can be adequate for ordinary file synchronization, especially when the workload is mostly sequential uploads and downloads. SSD improves database and metadata latency. NVMe is most noticeable during thumbnail creation, directory listings, full-text searches, many small-file operations, and simultaneous users. If a plan offers abundant HDD capacity at the same price as a smaller NVMe disk, choose according to workload: capacity wins for an archive, while low latency wins for collaboration and photo-heavy use.
Expandable and attached storage
Check whether the provider allows block storage or volume expansion without rebuilding the server. Expansion is useful when the operating system and database remain on the VPS while a larger data volume holds user files. Confirm the volume’s snapshot, backup, encryption, mount, and restoration behavior before relying on it.

Provider-by-provider assessment
Antihost: our top pick for a self-managed Nextcloud server
Antihost is our top pick for running Nextcloud on your own VPS. Its Linux VPS runs on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage and full root access, and plans span 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64 GB RAM, which covers every tier in the sizing table above. Traffic is unlimited on a 1 Gbps port, L3/L4 DDoS protection is included, and billing runs from 1 to 36 months.
It is self-managed, with no cPanel, so you install the web stack from the checklist below yourself. Regions are USA East, the Netherlands, and Ukraine. In our test on 13 October 2026, an Antihost VPS in Amsterdam (8 vCPUs, NVMe) reached about 195,000 random-read and 83,000 random-write IOPS at 4K, the kind of disk behavior that helps thumbnail creation and directory listings. A 14-day free trial lets you test a representative upload and preview workload; see the Antihost VPS plans for current options.

Hetzner is a sensible first choice when you want a small general-purpose VPS with NVMe storage and can administer Linux yourself. The CX22 example—2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, and 40 GB NVMe—fits a small personal or household deployment, although 40 GB leaves little room for a growing data directory and local backups.
2026 listings conflict on the price: one reports €5.49 per month after a reported 37.6% shared-vCPU increase on June 15, 2026, while another lists $4.15 per month for the same specification. The currency, location, tax treatment, and date are not reconciled. Check the provider’s current regional checkout page, renewal price, bandwidth limits, and whether the plan is shared or dedicated CPU before ordering.
Contabo: capacity per dollar, with performance to validate
Contabo is attractive when disk and memory matter more than the lowest latency. Reports include a plan with 400 GB NVMe and 6 GB RAM for under $6 per month, while another listing describes a 4 GB plan at €5.99 per month. Because these specifications come from different listings, verify the exact product name, disk technology, vCPU allocation, traffic allowance, and renewal cost.

One review notes that throughput can fluctuate during peak periods. That does not make the service unsuitable, but it makes monitoring important for installations that generate many previews, run office editing, or serve large numbers of simultaneous downloads. Keep an independent backup and test a representative upload, download, and preview workload during the refund or trial period offered in your jurisdiction.

DigitalOcean: straightforward operations, higher cost per gigabyte
DigitalOcean’s documented workflow and optional managed database can reduce operational work. Its reported 2-vCPU, 2-GB-RAM, 50-GB-SSD example at $12 per month is below the recommended memory for a multi-user Nextcloud stack. Use a larger droplet for a team, or place the database on a separate managed service only after accounting for network latency, transfer charges, and the additional monthly cost.
This option suits administrators who value a consistent control panel, API automation, and clear regional choices more than maximum storage per dollar. It is also convenient for a disposable staging server, provided production data is not left on an undersized instance.
Use a supported application stack
Database selection
For multi-user installations, use MariaDB or PostgreSQL. Nextcloud Release 35 lists MariaDB 10.11, 11.4, 11.8, and 12.3, and PostgreSQL 14 through 18. MariaDB 10.6 is out of support for that release. SQLite is intended only for testing and minimal instances; it is not a sound choice for a family or team server.
Keep the database on fast, reliable storage, restrict it to local or private network access, and include it in tested backups. If you move it to another host, measure latency and confirm that the backup and restore process covers both database contents and the Nextcloud data directory.

The advanced encryption is TRUSTe certified in the United States and is awarded the first (and only) ETSI EN 303 645 certification mark for NAS products by TÜV SÜD Group.
Caching and file locking
Use APCu for local caching and Redis for distributed caching and transactional file locking, as recommended for new installations. Without proper locking, simultaneous edits and sync operations can produce stalled jobs or confusing conflict states. Redis should be protected from public access and configured with authentication or private-network isolation appropriate to your deployment.
PHP, web server, and background jobs
Set memory_limit to at least 512 MB, then size the number of PHP workers so their possible combined memory use fits below the VPS limit with room for the database and operating system. Configure Nextcloud background jobs to use cron rather than relying on web requests. Preview generation, file scanning, search indexing, and notification tasks should run predictably instead of competing with a user’s login request.
Deployment checklist: from an empty VPS to a usable cloud
- Select a region and plan. Choose a location close to users, confirm IPv4/IPv6 behavior, storage type, traffic allowance, snapshot pricing, and the renewal price. Start at the tier that matches your active-user estimate rather than the provider’s smallest plan.
- Harden the operating system. Apply updates, create a non-root administrator, use SSH keys, disable password login where practical, enable a host firewall, and restrict administrative ports to trusted networks or a VPN.
- Point a domain name. Create DNS records for the server, allow propagation, and verify that reverse DNS and the system hostname are sensible. Use HTTPS before inviting users or uploading private files.
- Install the supported web stack. Install the PHP version and extensions required by your chosen Nextcloud release, a web server, MariaDB or PostgreSQL, APCu, Redis, and a cron service. Avoid mixing distribution packages from unrelated repositories without a rollback plan.
- Create the database securely. Make a dedicated database and least-privilege account, use a long unique password, bind the database to localhost or a private interface, and record the database version for future upgrades.
- Run the Nextcloud installer. Set the data directory outside the publicly served document root, select the database engine, provide the database credentials, and create the first administrator. Complete HTTPS configuration and confirm that trusted-domain settings match the domain users will enter.
- Configure caching and cron. Enable APCu and Redis in the Nextcloud configuration, configure transactional file locking, and schedule cron at the interval recommended by the installed release. Check the administration overview for warnings after the first run.
- Set upload and worker limits. Align PHP upload limits, web-server request limits, execution time, and PHP-FPM worker counts with the expected file sizes and RAM. Test a file larger than your normal document and a simultaneous multi-file upload.
- Configure backups before production use. Back up the database, configuration, encryption keys if used, and data directory to a separate system. Keep at least one copy inaccessible to the VPS account and perform a full restore test.
- Measure a baseline. Record idle and busy RAM, CPU load, disk latency, database size, cron duration, and available disk space. Recheck after importing a representative photo set and enabling any office or preview applications.
Security and recovery practices that matter
- Use HTTPS with automatic certificate renewal and redirect plain HTTP to HTTPS.
- Require strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication for administrators and, where practical, all users.
- Apply operating-system and Nextcloud security updates promptly, but take a snapshot or verified backup before major upgrades.
- Limit administrator accounts, review app permissions, and remove unused applications.
- Keep Redis, the database, and administrative interfaces off the public internet.
- Monitor authentication failures, unusual storage growth, failed cron jobs, certificate expiry, and disk usage.
- Test restoring a single file, a database, and a complete server. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Performance tuning after launch
Find the bottleneck before resizing
High CPU during preview generation points to worker or processor pressure; high memory and swap use point to insufficient RAM or too many workers; long database queries and slow directory listings point to storage or database pressure; and stalled synchronization can indicate locking or cron problems. Observe these patterns during normal work and during a deliberately busy test instead of upgrading based on one short spike.
Reduce avoidable work
Generate previews deliberately, limit unnecessary preview sizes, schedule intensive scans outside peak hours, and remove abandoned file versions according to your retention policy. Keep application and operating-system logs from consuming the data volume. If Collabora Online is added, budget extra CPU and memory: office conversion and concurrent editing can move a previously comfortable server into the 4–8-vCPU, 16-GB class.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsScale in the least disruptive order
- Increase RAM when the system swaps or PHP workers are repeatedly killed.
- Add vCPUs when sustained CPU saturation delays requests and background jobs.
- Move to faster storage when database and metadata latency remains high despite adequate CPU and RAM.
- Separate the database, cache, or file volume only when monitoring shows a clear contention point and the operational complexity is justified.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The installer works, but the server becomes unresponsive.”
The instance is commonly undersized or has too many PHP workers. Check memory and swap first, lower worker concurrency, stop unnecessary applications, and move to the next RAM tier before increasing CPU.
Best Value

“Files sync slowly or remain locked.”
Verify Redis configuration, transactional locking, cron execution, and database health. Check disk latency and confirm that the data volume is not full. SQLite should be replaced with MariaDB or PostgreSQL for a multi-user service.
“Photo uploads fill the disk unexpectedly.”
Measure originals, previews, deleted files, versions, logs, and temporary files separately. Expand the data volume, set sensible retention policies, and move backups off the production disk.
“An upgrade reports an unsupported database.”
Check the installed Nextcloud release’s database matrix. For Release 35, MariaDB 10.6 is out of support; plan a tested database upgrade or migration before upgrading Nextcloud.

Provider listings can lag behind regional catalogs and June 2026 pricing changes. Confirm the exact plan at checkout, including currency, VAT or sales tax, commitment term, storage medium, traffic, snapshots, and renewal rate. Do not design a production budget around a comparison-page price that the provider does not show.
How much should a Nextcloud VPS cost?
| Budget approach | Suitable use | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest-cost small VPS | One person or a few light users with modest storage | Little headroom for previews, upgrades, and growth |
| Balanced 4-vCPU/8-GB class | Family or small team, routine file sync, moderate photos | Higher monthly cost than a test instance, but fewer disruptive upgrades |
| Capacity-focused plan | Large libraries where disk and RAM dominate | Potentially less consistent throughput; validate performance and maintain external backups |
| Managed-service-oriented plan | Administrators who prefer a polished control panel or managed database | Higher cost and less storage per dollar |
Include backups, snapshots, extra volumes, taxes, domain registration, email delivery, and any managed database in the total. A cheap VPS without recoverable backups can cost more than a moderately priced plan after a disk failure or accidental deletion.
Quick Recap
Decision framework
- Choose Antihost when you want a self-managed VPS with NVMe storage, full root access, and a 14-day free trial to test your own upload and preview workload; it is our top pick for most Nextcloud installations.
- Choose Hetzner when a small-to-medium installation needs fast storage and low general-purpose cost, and you are comfortable checking shared-CPU performance and live pricing.
- Choose Contabo when your priority is abundant RAM and storage per dollar, provided your workload test confirms acceptable throughput.
- Choose DigitalOcean when operational simplicity, documented workflows, and an optional managed database outweigh raw storage value; skip the 2-GB example for a team.
- Reassess after two to four weeks. Use real memory, CPU, storage, and cron measurements to resize. The best VPS is the smallest configuration that keeps reliable headroom for your actual workload and recovery plan.
