For most paid Discord bots, Hetzner is the best value in 2026: comparison reports put its CX22 at about €3.29–€3.49 per month for 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM. DigitalOcean is the easiest starting point, while Vultr and Linode/Akamai are useful when you need a wider choice of regions. Oracle Cloud’s Always Free tier can host a bot at no charge, but its Arm-based quota is limited to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory in total, and instances that exceed the tenancy allowance can be disabled and deleted.
Prices below are approximate figures reported by 2026 comparison sources, not quotes verified on provider checkout pages. Confirm the current regional price, bandwidth policy, storage type, taxes and IPv4 charges before ordering.
Best VPS choices for a Discord bot
| Provider and plan reported in 2026 | Approximate monthly price | Reported resources | Best fit | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hetzner CX22 | €3.29–€3.49 | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, up to 20 TB transfer in one comparison | Lowest-cost paid hosting and several small bots | Prices are from comparison articles and can change; verify your location and traffic allowance |
| DigitalOcean entry plan | $4 for 512 MB in one report; $6 for 1 GB in another | 512 MB or 1 GB RAM; the $4 listing included 10 GB SSD and 500 GB transfer | Clear dashboard and beginner-friendly deployment | Comparable memory and CPU generally cost more than Hetzner |
| Vultr entry plan | $3.50 for a standard listing; $2.50 for an IPv6-only listing | 1 vCPU, 512 MB RAM, 10 GB SSD and 0.5 TB transfer on the $3.50 listing | Many locations and low-cost experiments | IPv6-only servers can be unsuitable for software or APIs that still require IPv4 |
| Linode/Akamai | From $5 | 1 GB RAM on the entry plan reported by a comparison source | Users who value broad regional availability and a conventional Linux VPS | Dedicated compute was reported from $45 per month; check the exact product and region |
| Oracle Cloud Always Free | $0 within the free allowance | Arm A1: 2 OCPUs and 12 GB memory total; flexible allocation | Learning, development and low-risk personal bots | Home-region restriction, capacity and quota enforcement; excess A1 instances can be deleted after 30 days |
For a single lightweight bot, the cheapest 512 MB or 1 GB plan is normally sufficient. A database, audio playback, image processing or a collection of bots justifies 1–2 GB or more. That sizing is a practical estimate rather than a Discord-published hardware requirement.
How to choose a VPS for Discord
Memory and CPU
Discord bots spend much of their time waiting on the gateway and API, so they rarely need the same hardware as a game server. A typical discord.py or discord.js process is expected to use well under 512 MB of RAM when it handles ordinary commands and events. Runtime overhead, package caches and the operating system still need room, so 1 GB is a safer first purchase if you do not want to tune memory aggressively.

Choose 2 GB or more when the host will also run PostgreSQL, Redis, a web dashboard, scheduled jobs, audio tools or several bot processes. CPU matters when commands perform compression, media conversion, large database queries or machine-learning work. For ordinary moderation, utility and notification bots, an additional vCPU usually helps less than adequate memory and reliable storage.
Bandwidth and storage
Text and interaction traffic is light. Voice playback, large file attachments, frequent image processing and external backups can consume substantially more transfer. The reported CX22 allowance of 20 TB is generous for normal bots, while the entry-level figures reported for other providers range from 0.5 TB to 500 GB. Treat those numbers as plan-specific allowances, not a promise that every region has identical terms.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A 10 GB disk is enough for a code checkout, logs and a small SQLite database. Use more storage or a managed database when you retain media, large caches or long-running logs. Keep at least 20–30 percent of the disk free so package upgrades and log rotation do not fail.
Region and latency
Discord’s gateway is global, so a bot does not need to be in the same city as every user. Put the VPS near your database and the services your bot calls most often. If your users are concentrated in one country, a nearby region can reduce command round-trip time, but reliability and provider capacity are usually more important than shaving a few milliseconds.
x86 versus Arm
Most inexpensive VPS plans use x86-64. Oracle’s A1 free shape uses Arm (aarch64). Your operating system and language runtime must have Arm packages, and every native dependency must compile or provide an Arm build. The compatibility of specific Discord libraries and their optional native modules was not established here, so test your complete dependency lockfile before moving a production bot to Arm. If a package fails to install, an x86 plan is the simplest fallback.
Hetzner: best paid value
Why it leads on price
Two 2026 comparison sources list the CX22 at approximately €3.29 and €3.49 per month, with 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM. One source also reports 20 TB of transfer. That combination gives a small bot substantial headroom for less than the entry plans commonly listed elsewhere. A separate comparison says a 4-vCPU, 8 GB configuration was about €16 and could rise to about €21 from April 2026; that increase is not verified against an official price page, so treat it as a warning to recheck rather than a guaranteed tariff.

Who should select it
- One or several Python or Node bots sharing a server.
- A bot that needs a small database, cache or web control panel.
- Projects where monthly cost and memory per euro matter more than a beginner-oriented interface.
Trade-offs
Regional availability, IPv4 pricing, backup fees and traffic terms can alter the final bill. The reported prices are not primary-verified. Review the current plan in your chosen location and calculate recurring backups before deciding that it is the absolute cheapest option.
DigitalOcean: easiest first deployment
Plans and pricing uncertainty
One comparison lists a plan starting at $4 per month with 512 MB RAM, a 10 GB SSD and 500 GB of transfer. Another lists $6 per month for a 1 GB tier. These are different sizes, which explains part of the apparent disagreement. A 1 GB server is a more comfortable starting point for a bot than a 512 MB server, especially when Node.js, Python packages and monitoring run together.
Why beginners choose it
The control panel, image selection and documented workflow make it straightforward to create an Ubuntu server, add an SSH key and destroy or resize a test instance. That convenience is valuable when you are deploying for the first time or handing operations to someone who does not manage Linux regularly. The convenience carries a higher price at comparable memory than the reported Hetzner plans.
When it is a good fit
Choose this route when predictable provisioning and a simple dashboard are more important than the lowest possible monthly bill. It also suits a team that wants a familiar interface for multiple environments, such as development, staging and production.
Vultr: many locations, but inspect the network option
Reported entry prices
A 2026 comparison lists $3.50 per month for 1 vCPU, 512 MB RAM, 10 GB SSD and 0.5 TB of transfer. Another lists $2.50 for a 1-vCPU, 0.5 GB, IPv6-only server. The cheaper figure is not equivalent to the standard listing: an IPv6-only address can prevent connections to IPv4-only endpoints and may complicate webhook providers, databases or administrative access.
Location advantage
One review counted 32 locations across six continents. That breadth can help when your database, API dependencies or users are concentrated in a region not served by your first-choice provider. Confirm that the specific location has the plan, IPv4 availability and capacity you need; a headline location count does not mean every plan is stocked everywhere.

Best use
Vultr works well for a small bot, a regional test server or a project that needs to move between continents. Prefer the standard IPv4-capable option unless you have verified that every dependency and administrator’s network supports IPv6.
Linode/Akamai: conventional VPS with broad regional reach
Comparison sources report entry pricing from $5 per month for 1 GB of RAM. They also describe dedicated compute starting at $45 per month after the Akamai acquisition, but that is a different class of product from the low-cost shared entry instance. Confirm whether you are selecting shared CPU, dedicated CPU or another service before comparing prices.
The 1 GB plan is a sensible baseline for one bot and a small database. Linode/Akamai is most attractive when its region, support expectations or existing account tooling fit your project. It is not the cheapest option in the reported figures, and the final bill can vary with backups, IPv4, storage and transfer.
Oracle Cloud Always Free: genuinely free, with sharp limits
What the current allowance provides
Oracle’s Always Free documentation lists a total Ampere A1 allowance of 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory per month. Oracle expresses that quota as 1,500 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB hours. You can place it in one instance or split it across as many as two instances with 1 OCPU each. The A1 shape is flexible, so you choose the OCPU and memory combination during creation and can resize it within the entitlement.
Always Free compute is available only in the tenancy’s home region. A comparison source also lists two AMD virtual machines at 1/8 OCPU and 1 GB each, but the exact availability and current terms should be checked in the console before relying on them.
Quota reduction and enforcement risk
Earlier A1 allowances were reported as 4 OCPUs and 24 GB. Community posts and one blog say the reduction to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB was enforced on August 18, 2026; Oracle’s documentation page does not state an enforcement date. Treat the date as reported community information, not an official announcement.

Oracle’s documentation says that when a tenancy has more A1 instances than its Always Free allowance, all A1 instances are disabled and deleted after 30 days unless the account is upgraded to paid. Forum users have also reported that instances disabled after the change could not be restarted or resized, even when the resulting configuration would have been within 2 OCPU and 12 GB. Those reports are anecdotal, and one Oracle agent confirmed that 2 OCPU and 12 GB remains within the entitlement. The operational lesson is clear: do not make an irreplaceable production bot depend on an unmonitored free tenancy.
Paid-tenancy allowance
Oracle’s price list gives paid tenancies a separate A1 allowance of 3,000 OCPU hours and 18,000 GB hours per month. That is not the same as Always Free, and moving to a paid account can introduce charges for resources outside the allowance. Set budgets and alerts before upgrading.
Arm deployment checklist
- Build or install the exact Python or Node.js runtime for aarch64.
- Run a clean dependency install on an Arm test instance.
- Check native packages such as database drivers, image libraries and audio tools.
- Keep an x86 backup or migration procedure ready.
- Monitor the instance and quota so an unexpected second VM cannot push the tenancy over its limit.
Free trials are not permanent free hosting
Comparison sources list trial credits of $200 for DigitalOcean, $100 for Linode and $100 for Vultr. Those credits are temporary promotional balances, not perpetual VPS plans. They are useful for testing deployment, load behavior and migration, but they expire or stop covering the server when the credit is exhausted. Add a billing alert and delete unused test instances.

Recommended server sizes
| Workload | Starting size | Why | When to move up |
|---|---|---|---|
| One command, moderation or notification bot | 1 vCPU, 512 MB–1 GB RAM | Gateway and API traffic are light; the process is expected to stay under 512 MB in ordinary use | OOM kills, large caches or several background jobs |
| One bot plus SQLite and a small web panel | 1–2 vCPU, 1–2 GB RAM | Leaves room for the runtime, database and reverse proxy | Database growth, concurrent jobs or sustained CPU saturation |
| Several bots or a relational database | 2 vCPU, 2–4 GB RAM | Separates processes and provides cache and filesystem headroom | High event rates, heavy queries or additional services |
| Audio, media conversion or image processing | 2–4 vCPU, 4 GB RAM or more | CPU and memory usage can spike far above a text bot | Measure real CPU, RAM, disk and transfer usage before scaling again |
Start small and measure. A larger plan does not fix a memory leak, runaway logging or an accidentally duplicated process; diagnose those first.
Deploying a Discord bot on an Ubuntu VPS
1. Create the server and lock down access
- Choose an Ubuntu LTS image, a region near your database and an IPv4-capable plan unless you have tested IPv6-only operation.
- Add an SSH key during provisioning. Log in with the provider’s initial user and immediately update packages with
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y. - Create a dedicated account such as
bot. Do not run the Discord process as root:sudo adduser bot. - Enable a firewall and allow SSH before enabling it:
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH, thensudo ufw enable. Open only ports your bot actually serves. - Disable password SSH authentication after confirming key access, and keep the private key off the server.
2. Install a Python bot
- Install Python and the virtual-environment package:
sudo apt install -y python3 python3-venv python3-pip. - Switch to the bot account, create an application directory and a virtual environment:
sudo -iu bot, thenmkdir -p ~/app && cd ~/app && python3 -m venv .venv. - Copy your code and install its locked dependencies with
.venv/bin/pip install -r requirements.txt. Keep the lock file in version control so a replacement VPS is reproducible. - Store the token in a root-owned environment file rather than committing it. For example, create
/etc/discord-bot.envwithDISCORD_TOKEN=your_token, set restrictive permissions withsudo chmod 600 /etc/discord-bot.env, and ensure only the service can read it. - Create
/etc/systemd/system/discord-bot.servicewith a dedicated user, working directory, environment file and restart policy:
[Unit]
Description=Discord bot
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
User=bot
WorkingDirectory=/home/bot/app
EnvironmentFile=/etc/discord-bot.env
ExecStart=/home/bot/app/.venv/bin/python bot.py
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
- Load and start the service:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload && sudo systemctl enable --now discord-bot. - Check the result with
systemctl status discord-botand follow logs withjournalctl -u discord-bot -f. A successful process should authenticate once and remain connected without a restart loop.
3. Install a Node.js bot
- Install the Node.js version required by your project, then use
npm ciin the application directory so production dependencies match the lock file. - Keep the token in the same protected environment file and have the service start your compiled entry point, for example
/home/bot/app/node_modules/.bin/node /home/bot/app/dist/index.js. - Use the same systemd controls:
sudo systemctl enable --now discord-bot,systemctl status discord-botandjournalctl -u discord-bot -f. - Do not run both a development watcher and the production service; duplicate logins can trigger confusing gateway behavior.
Production practices that prevent avoidable outages
Protect the token and permissions
Treat the bot token like a password. Never put it in a public repository, paste it into issue reports or include it in a screenshot. If it leaks, regenerate it in the Discord developer interface and restart the service. Request only the gateway intents and server permissions your features need.
Use restart and backup policies
Systemd can restart a crashed process, but it cannot repair a bad deployment. Keep code in version control, back up the database separately and document the exact start command. Test restoring the backup on a fresh VPS. For Oracle’s free tier in particular, maintain an export outside the tenancy because quota enforcement can remove an instance.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Control logs and disk growth
Use log rotation and cap verbose debug logging. Check df -h and free -h regularly. A full disk can prevent the bot from writing a session file or updating packages even when CPU and RAM are idle.
Monitor the gateway and external APIs
Record process restarts, gateway disconnects, API error rates and command latency. Respect Discord rate limits and implement exponential backoff for external services. A VPS with more CPU will not solve rate-limit violations or an invalid intent configuration.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The process is killed or repeatedly restarts
- Run
free -hand inspect kernel messages withdmesg -T | grep -i -E 'oom|killed process'. - Reduce concurrency, disable unnecessary caches and rotate logs.
- Move from 512 MB to 1–2 GB if the workload genuinely needs more memory.
- Check
journalctl -u discord-botfor an application exception rather than assuming the VPS is at fault.
The bot connects, then loses the gateway
- Verify that only one production process is using the token.
- Check the provider’s network status and your own outbound firewall rules.
- Confirm the process is not being restarted by a watcher, deployment script or systemd failure policy.
- Review gateway intents and library versions; changing VPS size will not correct an authentication or intent error.
Dependencies fail on Oracle A1
Identify whether the failing package has an aarch64 wheel or requires a native compiler. Replace it with an Arm-compatible release, build it using the project’s documented instructions, or deploy the bot on x86. Keep the architecture decision tied to your complete dependency set, not just the Python or Node.js library name.
An Oracle instance is disabled or cannot be resized
Check the tenancy’s A1 totals against 2 OCPUs and 12 GB, including every existing instance. The 30-day disable-and-delete behavior is documented for over-limit A1 instances. Community reports of unrecoverable instances after enforcement are anecdotal, so open a support case, but do not wait for recovery before restoring from an external backup or moving to a paid x86 VPS.
Cost and reliability decision framework
- Need zero recurring cost for a hobby bot? Test Oracle Always Free, stay within 2 OCPUs and 12 GB, use the home region and keep an external backup.
- Need the most resources per euro or dollar? Compare the current Hetzner CX22 price and traffic terms first.
- Need the simplest first deployment? Select a 1 GB DigitalOcean plan and accept the premium for a clear workflow.
- Need a particular continent? Check Vultr’s location list or Linode/Akamai’s regional inventory, then compare the exact plan rather than the provider headline.
- Need production continuity? Choose a paid VPS, automate backups, monitor the process and keep a tested migration path. A free trial credit is for evaluation, not an availability guarantee.
The best VPS is the smallest server that leaves room for your bot’s measured memory use, has the region and architecture your dependencies support, and can be replaced from backup. On the reported 2026 prices, that usually means Hetzner for paid value, DigitalOcean for ease, Vultr or Linode/Akamai for location choice, and Oracle only when its free-tier limits and recovery risks fit the workload.
