There is no independently verified “best” VPS for Coolify in 2026. The dependable choice depends on your workload, build activity, storage growth, CPU architecture and region. For a small test deployment, start around 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 40 GB SSD. For several applications with a database, plan for 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM and 80–100 GB SSD. Heavy builds or many services generally need 8 or more vCPU and at least 16 GB RAM, or a separate build server.

Hetzner Cloud and DigitalOcean are both documented options for deploying Coolify, but the available evidence does not prove that either is cheaper, faster or more reliable. Check each provider’s current regional price, bandwidth policy and plan specifications immediately before ordering.

What Coolify needs from a VPS

Coolify is a self-hosted deployment platform that orchestrates applications, databases, container images, volumes and logs on your server. The platform itself has a modest baseline, but the workloads it manages determine the real server size.

Use case vCPU RAM Disk What this sizing supports
Coolify installation and light testing 2 2 GB minimum; 4 GB preferred 10 GB is the documented platform minimum; about 40 GB is more practical Coolify plus a very small test app, with limited room for images and logs
One small production application 2 4 GB About 40 GB SSD A single modest service and normal container overhead
Several applications and a database 4 8 GB 80–100 GB SSD Roughly five to ten small applications plus database storage and images
Many services or CPU-heavy builds 8 or more 16 GB or more 150 GB or more Ten or more services, frequent builds, or a separate build capacity requirement

The current Coolify installation documentation lists 2 CPU cores, 2 GB of memory and 10 GB of free disk as the minimum for the platform. Its production-style example uses 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 40 GB of storage, with observed CPU usage near 70–90 percent. That example is a warning against treating the bare minimum as a comfortable production specification.

A legacy Coolify v3 requirements page lists 2 CPUs, 2 GB of memory and at least 30 GB of storage for images. The larger storage figure reflects the fact that container images, volumes and logs quickly exceed the space consumed by the control plane.

Recommended VPS sizes by workload

Testing, demos and a single small app

Choose 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and approximately 40 GB of SSD storage. This matches Coolify’s own production-style example and the entry tier described in DigitalOcean’s Coolify marketplace guidance. It gives the operating system, Coolify and one small application enough headroom for routine activity, but it is not a good fit for several databases or concurrent builds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented technical floor is lower—one CPU, 512 MB RAM and 4 GB of disk can run Coolify—but the installation documentation explicitly marks that configuration as not recommended. Use it only for an intentionally disposable experiment where failure and reinstallation are acceptable.

Several applications with a database

For a small production host, move to 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM and 80–100 GB of SSD. DigitalOcean’s marketplace guidance associates approximately 8 GB RAM, 4 CPUs and 100 GB with five to ten applications plus databases. This size leaves room for database caches, rolling image versions, build processes and log retention that a 4 GB machine cannot comfortably absorb.

Frequent builds or a larger service set

Builds are CPU-intensive. The Coolify v3 requirements documentation notes that a single CPU becomes a bottleneck during builds, so adding RAM alone will not solve slow deployment jobs. For many services, parallel builds or resource-intensive compilers, use at least 8 vCPU and 16 GB RAM with 150 GB or more of SSD capacity. Another option is to keep the application server smaller and attach a separate build server, preventing compilation spikes from starving live services.

Hetzner Cloud and DigitalOcean: what the evidence establishes

Both providers appear in the available documentation as suitable places to run Coolify. Their inclusion is not a ranking: no cited source establishes a winner for price, reliability, support or performance.

Provider Coolify availability Published sizing information What you must verify
Hetzner Cloud Hetzner documentation includes a Coolify application listing, with installation through the Hetzner Console or Cloud API. The cited material does not provide current official plan prices or a complete plan table. Current vCPU, RAM, SSD type and capacity, region, bandwidth limits, IPv4/IPv6 terms and monthly total.
DigitalOcean DigitalOcean publishes a Coolify marketplace listing. The marketplace guidance describes about 4 GB/2 CPU/50 GB for one to three small apps; 8 GB/4 CPU/100 GB for five to ten apps plus databases; and 16 GB or more/8 CPU/150 GB or more for ten or more services. Current regional price, storage performance, transfer allowance, backups and any marketplace image changes.

Do not rely on third-party references to particular plan names, prices or reported price changes unless the provider’s current pricing page confirms them. The available material did not verify specific Hetzner plan specifications or a June 2026 price change, so those figures should not be used as purchasing facts.

How to compare VPS plans for Coolify

1. Match CPU to build behavior

Count concurrent builds, not just running applications. A server with two vCPU can serve a small application well but become unresponsive while compiling multiple images. If deployments are infrequent and images are built elsewhere, two to four vCPU may be adequate. If builds run on the VPS, prioritize additional cores before buying excess memory.

2. Reserve enough memory for databases

Coolify’s 2 GB minimum describes the platform, not a database-backed production stack. Database engines, caches, queues and application processes all compete for RAM. Treat 4 GB as a practical starting point for one small app and 8 GB as the more sensible floor for several apps with a database. Set monitoring alerts before memory pressure triggers swapping or process termination.

3. Calculate disk from images and data

Include the operating system, Coolify data, current images, older image layers, database files, persistent volumes, backups and logs. A deployment can temporarily need space for both the previous and new image during an update. The 10 GB platform minimum therefore should not be used as a production disk target. Start near 40 GB for a small installation and increase to 80–100 GB or more when databases and multiple services are involved.

4. Confirm SSD storage

SSD-backed storage reduces image extraction and database latency compared with slower media. Check whether the advertised capacity is local SSD, network block storage or another tier, and whether performance is included or metered separately. The cited sizing guidance assumes SSD capacity but does not establish identical performance between providers.

5. Check region and bandwidth

Select a region close to most users and, where applicable, close to external databases or object storage. Compare included transfer, transfer overage rates, IPv4 charges, backup fees and storage expansion costs. These recurring items can change the monthly total more than the headline VPS price.

6. Validate architecture for every image

Coolify’s installation documentation lists both amd64 and arm64 as supported architectures; ARM64 is required on Raspberry Pi OS. An Arm-based cloud plan is therefore valid at the platform level. That does not prove that every application image, native dependency or build tool supports Arm64. Before choosing Arm, verify architecture manifests for your base images and test native modules used by the application.

A practical selection procedure

  1. List the services. Record each application, database, queue, worker, scheduled job and monitoring component you plan to run under Coolify.
  2. Separate build and runtime load. Note which services build container images on the VPS, how often builds run and whether more than one build can overlap.
  3. Choose a starting size. Use 2 vCPU/4 GB/40 GB for a small test or single app; 4 vCPU/8 GB/80–100 GB for several applications and a database; and 8 or more vCPU/16 GB+/150 GB+ for heavy builds or many services.
  4. Compare equivalent plans. Put the same vCPU, RAM and SSD capacity next to each provider’s live price. Include bandwidth, backups, public IPs and storage expansion rather than comparing only the base hourly rate.
  5. Check architecture. Select amd64 when your image ecosystem is x86-only; select arm64 only after confirming that all application images and native dependencies support it.
  6. Install using the provider’s supported path. Hetzner documents a Coolify application deployment through its Console or Cloud API, while DigitalOcean provides a Coolify marketplace listing. Follow the current provider and Coolify installation screens because labels and image versions can change.
  7. Deploy one representative workload. Build the largest or most CPU-intensive image you expect to use, initialize the database and exercise background jobs before moving production traffic.
  8. Observe and resize. Watch CPU saturation during builds, memory pressure during normal traffic, disk growth and network transfer. Increase the constrained resource instead of upgrading every dimension blindly.

Storage planning and cleanup

Images and build cache

Each deployment can leave image layers and build cache behind. Keep enough free space for a new build while the previous version remains available for rollback. Establish a retention policy for unused images and old releases, and test that cleanup does not remove layers required by active containers.

Volumes and databases

Persistent volumes grow independently of application code. Database growth, indexes and write-ahead logs can consume more space than the images themselves. Track database size separately from container storage and keep backups outside the VPS when possible so a full disk does not also destroy the only backup copy.

Logs

Application and proxy logs can fill a small disk silently. Set retention and rotation limits, export logs when long-term analysis is required and alert on both absolute free space and rate of growth. A 40 GB server can be exhausted quickly by verbose debug logging.

CPU, memory and disk symptoms

Symptom Likely constraint Response
Builds queue or the server becomes sluggish only during builds Insufficient vCPU or overlapping builds Limit concurrency, move builds to a separate server or add CPU cores.
Processes are killed, swap grows or database queries slow under load Insufficient RAM Reduce concurrent workloads temporarily, then move to a larger memory tier.
Deployments fail with “no space” errors Images, volumes, logs or database data have consumed the disk Remove verified unused artifacts, rotate logs, expand SSD storage and review retention.
Application starts on amd64 but fails on an Arm host Image or native dependency lacks arm64 support Use a multi-architecture image, rebuild dependencies for arm64 or select amd64.
Traffic costs exceed the expected bill Transfer or backup charges were excluded from the plan comparison Review the provider’s current regional allowances and metered rates before resizing.

When to use a separate build server

A separate builder is useful when production services need predictable latency but image compilation is bursty. The application VPS can remain at a runtime-oriented size while the builder supplies more CPU and temporary disk during deployments. This arrangement adds networking, credentials and maintenance overhead, so it is most valuable when builds are frequent, large or concurrent. For occasional small builds, upgrading the single VPS may be simpler.

Security and operational prerequisites

  • Use a current supported Linux image and apply security updates before exposing services.
  • Protect the Coolify administrator account with a strong unique credential and multi-factor authentication where the current interface supports it.
  • Restrict management access with firewall rules and keep only required service ports public.
  • Back up databases and important volumes independently of the VPS; test restoration rather than assuming a snapshot is usable.
  • Monitor CPU, memory, disk free space, disk growth, build duration and failed deployments.
  • Document the provider region, server architecture, DNS records, secrets and recovery procedure so a replacement host can be provisioned without guesswork.

How much should you budget?

The cited material does not establish current prices for either provider, and VPS prices vary by region, billing term, storage class, transfer and optional backups. A responsible 2026 comparison therefore starts with equivalent resources rather than a claimed cheapest plan:

Comparison tier Resources to price Additional line items
Small test or one app 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, about 40 GB SSD Backups, public IP, transfer and tax
Small production stack 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 80–100 GB SSD Database backup storage, transfer overage and extra volumes
Heavy builds or many services 8 or more vCPU, 16 GB or more RAM, 150 GB or more SSD Separate builder, snapshots, high-volume transfer and monitoring

Re-check the live provider pages on the day you order. Do not treat an undated marketplace or documentation excerpt as a permanent price sheet.

Which VPS should you choose?

Choose a Hetzner Cloud deployment when

You want to use the Coolify application path documented in Hetzner’s Console or Cloud API and its current regional plans meet your required CPU, memory, SSD and bandwidth criteria. Confirm every specification and price directly before committing.

Choose a DigitalOcean deployment when

You prefer a documented marketplace listing and want to map your workload directly to the marketplace’s one-to-three-app, five-to-ten-app or ten-plus-service sizing guidance. Verify the current plan, region, transfer allowance and backup costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose neither until you test

If your application uses unusual native libraries, large builds or an architecture-sensitive image, create a short-lived test server first. A nominally cheaper or larger VPS is not a good choice if the image cannot run, the build exceeds its CPU budget or the storage model cannot accommodate your database.

Bottom line for 2026

Size Coolify for the workloads around it, not just for the control plane. Use 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM as a practical entry point, reserve 4 vCPU and 8 GB for a small multi-application production host, and move to 8 or more vCPU with 16 GB or more—or a separate builder—when builds and service count grow. Plan storage generously, verify amd64 or arm64 compatibility, and compare live provider totals in the region you need. Hetzner Cloud and DigitalOcean are documented candidates, but the available evidence does not justify naming either one the universal best VPS.
