Short answer: For most U.S. users, NordVPN is the best all-round choice because it combines speed, streaming reliability, usability, support, and privacy features. Surfshark is the better value for families and many devices, Proton VPN is the strongest transparency and free-plan option, ExpressVPN is easiest for beginners, Private Internet Access is better for power users who need port forwarding and configuration options, and Mullvad or IVPN are stronger choices when minimizing account data matters more than streaming.

There is no objectively best VPN for every reader. The right pick depends on whether you prioritize privacy evidence, streaming, speed, simplicity, low cost, many simultaneous connections, Linux support, port forwarding, or anonymity-oriented account design. The recommendations below reflect publicly available information and published testing checked for August 9, 2026; prices, server inventories, and streaming results can change.

Best VPNs at a glance

VPN Best for Connections Free plan Refund Privacy and transparency Main drawback
NordVPN Best overall 10 simultaneous devices No 30 days Audited no-logs assurance; Panama operation; broad security feature set Promotional pricing can rise substantially at renewal; apps are busier than ExpressVPN
Surfshark Best value and families Unlimited simultaneous connections No 30 days 2023 and 2025 Deloitte no-logs reports plus infrastructure testing Netherlands operation; introductory price and tax require careful checkout review
Proton VPN Best privacy transparency and unlimited free use Plan-dependent; check current terms Yes, unlimited data Plan-dependent Open-source apps, published audits, Swiss operation, Secure Core, Stealth Free users get fewer locations and features; audit scope needs careful reading
ExpressVPN Best for beginners Up to 14 simultaneous devices No 30 days TrustedServer RAM-only architecture; broad platform support Usually expensive without a promotion and less configurable than PIA or Mullvad
Private Internet Access Best for power users and port forwarding Unlimited simultaneous connections No 30 days Open-source apps, Deloitte audit, court-tested no-logs history U.S. jurisdiction; speed and streaming consistency can trail the leaders
Mullvad Best for minimizing account identity 5 devices No 14 days, except cash payments No email required, numbered accounts, cash and cryptocurrency payments, flat pricing No port forwarding, no free plan, and less emphasis on streaming
IVPN Best small privacy specialist 5 on Standard and Plus; 10 on Pro Suite No Check the selected plan No email required, open-source apps, cash/Monero/Bitcoin, multi-hop Small network, no streaming guarantee, no port forwarding, and no new no-logs audit in the same format as its 2019 audit
Windscribe Free Best capped free plan Unlimited devices Yes, 2 GB or 10 GB monthly Plan-dependent Open-source desktop apps and documented privacy features Canada-based; free data and location limits

Pricing note: VPN companies commonly advertise an effective monthly rate while charging the entire subscription term upfront. Before paying, record the currency, tax, total charged today, promotional period, renewal price, refund deadline, and whether the offer includes extra months. A monthly-equivalent price is not the same as the amount that leaves your account today. Mullvad is the notable simple case: its current price is €5 per month including VAT, whether you pay monthly or annually. IVPN lists $60 per year for Standard, $80 per year for Plus, and $100 per year for Pro Suite on its current plan information. All other prices should be checked at checkout for your country and date rather than copied from an undated comparison table.

For additional current comparisons, published testing from Tom’s Guide, TechRadar, RTINGS, and Security.org is useful, but rankings differ because each publication weights speed, privacy, streaming, price, and usability differently. Commercial comparison sites may also earn affiliate commissions, so testing claims and purchase links should be considered separately.

Our recommendations by use case

Best VPN overall: NordVPN

Choose NordVPN if you want the best balance of speed, streaming, usability, server availability, support, and privacy features. It is the safest default recommendation for a general consumer who does not want to compare a dozen technical trade-offs.

Tom’s Guide’s current overall testing places NordVPN first after evaluating speed across multiple platforms and locations, streaming, app behavior, leak protection, support, and infrastructure rather than relying on one speed-test result. The provider’s published inventory is also large: Tom’s Guide lists more than 9,000 servers, 224 locations in 149 countries, and a Panama jurisdiction. Server counts and locations change, however, so treat those figures as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent advantage.

  • Useful features: 10 simultaneous devices, a 30-day refund policy, 24/7 live chat, leak protection, a kill switch, and a mature selection of protocols and privacy tools.
  • Privacy evidence: Deloitte Lithuania’s sixth no-logs assurance engagement assessed systems from November 10 through December 12, 2025. The final report was issued December 12, 2025, and NordVPN announced it on February 3, 2026.
  • Important qualification: that engagement is a point-in-time assurance exercise, not a permanent guarantee that no system or policy will ever change. The full report is not publicly published on the announcement page. Read the provider’s description of the 2025 assurance engagement with its privacy policy.
  • Streaming: it was the most consistent option in Tom’s Guide’s October 2025 streaming table across the listed Netflix regions, Disney+, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and 10 Play. That is dated testing, not a promise that every server will work today.

Who should skip it: Choose something else if your top priority is creating an account without an email address, paying cash, using port forwarding, or getting a permanently flat price. Surfshark is usually a better household-value choice, while Mullvad is better for minimal account data.

Best value and family VPN: Surfshark

Choose Surfshark when one subscription needs to cover a household, a large collection of devices, or several people at once. Its unlimited simultaneous connections are the clearest practical advantage. That can make it less expensive than buying separate accounts for phones, computers, televisions, tablets, and a router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Connections: Surfshark’s support documentation confirms unlimited simultaneous connections, subject to its service terms and reasonable-use expectations.
  • Performance: commercial testing generally places it near the fastest mainstream providers. In Tom’s Guide’s dated speed testing, Surfshark led one Ireland-to-UK peak result, while Proton VPN led the Ireland-to-U.S. result. Those different winners illustrate why a single fastest-VPN claim is unreliable.
  • Streaming: it is a strong alternative to NordVPN and often has a lower introductory effective price, but Tom’s Guide’s October 2025 table recorded some Prime Video failures in that particular test. Results can change by server, country, app, account plan, and date.
  • Privacy evidence: Surfshark is based in the Netherlands and reports Deloitte no-logs assessments in 2023 and 2025. Its trust center also describes a SecuRing infrastructure audit completed in 2025 and a 2026 Cure53 review of infrastructure and Dausos. A no-logs assurance report and an infrastructure-security review test different things; neither should be summarized merely as an all-purpose privacy guarantee.
  • Refund and price: the standard refund period is 30 days. Promotional rates are not renewal rates, and local tax may be added at checkout.

Who should skip it: Privacy purists who want the smallest possible account footprint may prefer Mullvad or IVPN. Also compare the renewal price carefully if you are buying only for a short period.

Best privacy and free VPN: Proton VPN

Choose Proton VPN if transparency, open-source apps, and a credible unlimited free tier matter more than having every location and streaming feature. It is the strongest mainstream privacy recommendation and the free plan to try before spending money.

  • Free plan: Proton VPN Free has no data limit, no ads, and no artificial speed limit. It does restrict location selection and features compared with paid service, and free access should not be assumed to provide the same streaming or P2P behavior as the paid tier.
  • Software transparency: Proton says its apps are open source and independently audited. Open source makes code available for inspection, but it does not mean every server-side component, operational process, or third-party dependency is automatically open source.
  • Privacy architecture: the company says it keeps no activity logs, operates from Switzerland, and offers Secure Core, which can route traffic through additional servers in privacy-focused jurisdictions. Its Stealth protocol is designed to disguise VPN traffic, and Proton documents Stealth and Alternative Routing for censorship-resistant connections.
  • Audit qualification: do not convert the word audited into a claim that every privacy practice has been permanently proved. RTINGS notes that the scope of Proton’s latest audit was limited and did not include the wider privacy policies or software source code. Review the no-logs policy, plan details, and independent assessment together.

Who should skip it: Choose NordVPN or Surfshark if your first priority is the broadest consistent streaming access, or Mullvad if you do not want to provide an email address when opening an account. Proton is also not the ideal choice if you require port forwarding; paid P2P support does not mean that every advanced inbound-connection feature is available.

Best VPN for beginners: ExpressVPN

Choose ExpressVPN if you want the least intimidating app and broad platform support. Its interface emphasizes a simple connect button and a server selector, with advanced settings less prominent. Tom’s Guide rates it the easiest VPN to use, although NordVPN and Surfshark are also approachable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Connections: up to 14 simultaneous devices.
  • Architecture: TrustedServer is designed around RAM-only operation, which reduces the risk of persistent data remaining on a server after reboot or decommissioning. RAM-only infrastructure reduces one storage risk; it does not independently prove that a provider logs nothing.
  • Protocols: ExpressVPN supports OpenVPN, WireGuard, and its proprietary Lightway protocol. Protocol names are less important than the provider’s implementation, security review, and behavior on your connection.
  • Refund: 30 days under the standard offer. Plans, prices, promotions, and support conditions can differ by purchase route.
  • Streaming: generally capable, but Tom’s Guide’s October 2025 table recorded some Prime Video failures in that test. You may need to switch servers.

Who should skip it: Technical users who want port forwarding, extensive automation, or many low-level controls will get more from PIA. Price-sensitive customers should compare the full charge and renewal cost because ExpressVPN is usually expensive outside promotions.

Best VPN for power users and port forwarding: Private Internet Access

Choose Private Internet Access, or PIA, if you want configuration depth, open-source apps, Linux support, unlimited connections, and port forwarding. It is a practical choice for lawful P2P, self-hosting experiments, and users who understand why they need inbound connections.

  • Connections and software: PIA supports unlimited simultaneous connections and publishes open-source apps. It supports OpenVPN and WireGuard, with extensive configuration options.
  • Privacy evidence: PIA has a court-tested no-logs history and a Deloitte no-logs audit. Public court history is useful evidence because it shows what the provider could produce when required, but it is not a guarantee that future systems will be identical.
  • Port forwarding: available according to current testing coverage. It can help certain P2P and inbound-connection uses, but it can also expose a service to the public internet and increase abuse or blacklisting risk.
  • Performance: PIA can be slower or less consistent than the leading mainstream choices in some tests. Streaming has improved but may require server trial and error.
  • Jurisdiction: PIA is U.S.-based. That is a legal consideration, not an automatic verdict that the service is either trustworthy or untrustworthy.

Who should skip it: Beginners who want everything to work without configuration should start with ExpressVPN or NordVPN. Do not select PIA solely because it supports port forwarding if you have no use for that feature.

Best VPN for anonymity-focused account design: Mullvad

Choose Mullvad when minimizing identifying account data matters more than streaming, a large server network, or port forwarding. Mullvad does not require an email address, username, or password to create an account. Instead, it issues a randomly generated account number. It accepts cash, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Monero, giving privacy-conscious users more payment choices than most mainstream services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Price: €5 per month including VAT, with the same rate for monthly or annual payment. This flat pricing avoids the common low-introductory-price/high-renewal cycle.
  • Device limit: five devices.
  • Privacy position: Mullvad’s public policy says it keeps no activity logs and minimizes account data.
  • Refund: 14 days, but cash payments are excluded from the refund policy.
  • Limitations: no free plan, no port forwarding, and less emphasis on streaming compatibility. Mullvad operates from Sweden.
  • Censorship tools: settings such as TCP on port 443 and UDP-over-TCP can help in some restrictive networks, but no provider can guarantee access in a particular country or during a particular blocking campaign.

Mullvad is a good example of why privacy and convenience are different goals. A numbered account and cash payment can reduce the information connected to the subscription, but logging in to a personal account, using a recognizable device, accepting browser cookies, or revealing information to a website can still identify you.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54) | 4 x 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Ports, EasyMesh Compatible, Support Guest WiFi, Access Point Mode, IPv6 & Parental Controls
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Best small privacy specialist: IVPN

Choose IVPN if you value a small provider that clearly states its limitations and supports privacy-oriented account and payment options. IVPN requires no email address, offers open-source apps and website code, accepts cash, Monero, and Bitcoin, and supports multi-hop connections.

  • Plans: IVPN lists Standard at five devices and $60 per year, Plus at five devices and $80 per year, and Pro Suite at ten devices and $100 per year.
  • Infrastructure: IVPN describes its VPN gateways as bare-metal servers and publishes explicit limitations rather than promising universal streaming access.
  • Privacy evidence: the company claims no activity logs and documents its audit position openly. Its public statement says the last no-logs audit was conducted in March 2019 and that it will not commission another audit in that same format because audits are point-in-time assessments. That does not mean IVPN has no security work; it means readers should not describe IVPN in 2026 as regularly no-logs audited.
  • Limitations: smaller network, no streaming guarantee, no port forwarding, and less appeal for users who mainly want to access entertainment catalogs.

IVPN is a specialist choice for a narrower threat model, not the obvious recommendation for a family that wants every television and streaming service to work.

Best free VPN with a data cap: Windscribe Free

Choose Windscribe Free if 10 GB of monthly data and access to 10 countries are enough for your occasional use. Windscribe provides 10 GB per month when you confirm an email address and 2 GB without one. The free plan supports unlimited devices and includes privacy-oriented features such as split tunneling and a firewall; Windscribe’s desktop apps are open source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windscribe also documents Stealth and WSTunnel connection modes, which can help some users get through VPN blocking. Effectiveness depends heavily on the network and country. Windscribe is based in Canada, and the free plan’s data cap makes it unsuitable for regular 4K streaming or constant whole-house use.

Best VPN by what you need to do

For streaming

For a streaming-first buyer, the current practical order is:

  1. NordVPN: the most consistent mainstream choice in the dated published comparison.
  2. Surfshark: similar appeal at a generally lower introductory rate, but not perfect in every service test.
  3. Proton VPN: an increasingly strong privacy-focused alternative.
  4. ExpressVPN: usually capable, but may require changing servers.
  5. PIA: improved, though less predictable and more likely to require trial and error.

Tom’s Guide labels its published streaming table October 2025. It tested listed Netflix regions, Disney+, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and 10 Play. NordVPN was reliable across that table, while Surfshark and ExpressVPN had some Prime Video failures. The same coverage says more recent testing changed some conclusions, which is why a responsible review must date its streaming results.

Streaming providers actively detect and block VPN addresses. Results vary by country, server, browser or app, subscription plan, and date. Netflix says VPNs are unsupported for live events and ad-supported viewing experiences; its support guidance also recommends turning off VPN or proxy services when they cause location errors. Do not buy any VPN on a promise that it will permanently unlock a specific catalog.

For speed and low latency

There is no permanent fastest VPN. Speed depends on your baseline connection, distance to the server, server load, protocol, device hardware, Wi-Fi or cellular conditions, application version, time of day, and whether the test measures download, upload, latency, or connection setup.

Tom’s Guide’s October 2025 results show the problem with simplistic rankings: Surfshark led its Ireland-to-UK peak result, Proton VPN led its Ireland-to-U.S. result, and ExpressVPN led an older low-bandwidth case study. Those results can all be true because they measure different paths and conditions.

Start with WireGuard when speed is the priority. WireGuard uses modern primitives including ChaCha20-Poly1305, Curve25519, BLAKE2s, SipHash24, and HKDF, and its compact design is intended to be easier to review. It is not automatically faster or safer in every provider’s implementation. Use OpenVPN TCP when UDP is blocked or when a network needs TCP transport, accepting that it can be slower. Multi-hop, Secure Core, Onion-over-VPN, and obfuscation generally add latency.

For perspective, Tom’s Guide gives roughly 25–30 Mbps as practical guidance for 4K video and 25–50 Mbps for gaming, while noting that several household activities share the connection. Gaming depends more on latency and routing consistency than on a spectacular peak download result. A VPN that measures 1,000 Mbps is irrelevant if your broadband plan is 100 Mbps.

For privacy

Privacy is not one single feature. Separate these goals:

  • Mainstream privacy: Proton VPN is the strongest choice when you want open-source apps, a free unlimited-data tier, Secure Core, Stealth, and published audit information.
  • Minimal subscription identity: Mullvad is stronger when no email, numbered accounts, cash, and flat pricing matter most.
  • Privacy-specialist transparency: IVPN offers a small, explicit, limitation-focused service with no-email accounts, open-source apps, multi-hop, and privacy-oriented payment methods.
  • Technical control: PIA combines open-source apps, Linux support, port forwarding, and extensive settings with a court-tested no-logs history.

None of these choices makes you anonymous. A VPN moves trust from your ISP, public Wi-Fi operator, or local network observer to the VPN provider. The provider can still observe connection metadata, and websites can still identify you through accounts, cookies, browser fingerprints, payment information, and device characteristics. HTTPS remains important because it encrypts website content from the VPN provider even though the VPN provider can still see connection-level information.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

For families and many devices

Provider Current simultaneous-connection information Practical meaning
Surfshark Unlimited Strongest fit for a household with many phones, computers, televisions, and tablets
PIA Unlimited Useful for large households and technical users
ExpressVPN Up to 14 Generous for a family that prefers a simple app
NordVPN 10 Enough for many households, but count simultaneous connections
Mullvad 5 Better for an individual or small set of personally controlled devices
IVPN 5 on Standard and Plus; 10 on Pro Suite Check the selected tier before buying

Unlimited devices normally means unlimited simultaneous connections under the provider’s terms, not unlimited accounts or unrestricted commercial sharing. App limits may also differ from antivirus, identity, or other bundled features.

A VPN app may not be available for every smart TV, game console, streaming box, or IoT device. A router installation can cover devices without native apps, but router firmware support and setup complexity vary. Browser extensions generally protect only browser traffic, while an app-based VPN normally protects device traffic subject to operating-system exclusions. Always check Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS/iPadOS, Android TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, router, and manual WireGuard/OpenVPN support separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For torrenting and lawful P2P

For lawful file sharing, look for P2P support, a reliable kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, upload performance, a clear copyright-abuse policy, Linux or router support, and—if your use needs inbound connections—port forwarding.

PIA is the strongest technical pick in this group because it supports port forwarding, automation, Linux, open-source apps, and unlimited connections. Proton VPN advertises BitTorrent support on paid plans. Mullvad and IVPN explicitly do not offer port forwarding. Port forwarding can improve connectivity for some applications, but it exposes a listening service to the public internet and should not be enabled casually. A VPN does not make copyright infringement lawful or risk-free.

For censorship circumvention

Potential choices include:

  • Proton VPN: Stealth is designed to disguise VPN connections, and Proton documents Stealth and Alternative Routing, including availability for free users.
  • Mullvad: anti-censorship settings include TCP on port 443 and UDP-over-TCP.
  • Windscribe: Stealth and WSTunnel provide alternative connection methods.

These features may work on one network and fail on another. VPN blocking changes quickly, and local law may restrict VPN use. Do not promise access in a particular country without a current, country-specific test, and do not assume that a protocol designed to evade blocking is legal everywhere.

What a VPN actually does

A consumer VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a VPN server. Websites generally see the VPN server’s public IP address instead of your home or mobile IP address, and the local ISP, Wi-Fi operator, or network administrator has less visibility into the destinations and traffic passing through the tunnel. Mozilla’s explanation of what a VPN does describes this basic function while also warning that a VPN does not make web activity fully anonymous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is trust. Instead of asking only whether your ISP can see a destination, you must ask what the VPN provider can collect, retain, infer, or disclose. HTTPS still matters because it protects the content of web sessions from intermediaries, including the VPN provider, while the VPN protects the connection between your device and the VPN server.

A VPN is useful for

  • Public or untrusted Wi-Fi.
  • Reducing your ISP’s visibility into destinations and traffic patterns.
  • Hiding your home IP address from websites and other internet services.
  • Traveling while connecting through a familiar location, where the service and local law permit it.
  • Reducing local-network filtering or censorship where VPN use is legal.
  • Connecting to a personal or organizational network when using the appropriate VPN technology.

A VPN is not a substitute for

  • HTTPS.
  • A password manager and unique passwords.
  • Multifactor authentication.
  • Antivirus or endpoint protection.
  • Browser anti-tracking controls.
  • Secure DNS by itself.
  • Tor for high-anonymity use cases.
  • A corporate remote-access VPN for business systems.
  • Good account, software, and device security.

How to judge VPN privacy claims

Read no-logs claims precisely

Activity logs can include websites visited, DNS queries, files downloaded, and applications used. Connection logs can include timestamps, originating IP addresses, assigned servers, session duration, and bandwidth. Aggregated operational metrics such as total users or server load may be less sensitive when they cannot be linked to a particular account.

A provider can truthfully say that it does not log browsing history while retaining some connection metadata or account information. Read the privacy policy and audit scope together. The phrase no logs is not a universal technical standard. A provider’s payment records, support tickets, crash reports, marketing systems, and website analytics may also be separate from VPN activity logging.

Use an evidence hierarchy

  1. Current, clearly scoped independent infrastructure or no-logs assurance.
  2. Public court records or server seizures showing that relevant data was unavailable.
  3. Open-source client code and reproducible builds.
  4. RAM-only or diskless server architecture.
  5. Transparency reports and warrant canaries.
  6. A clear privacy policy covering activity logs, connection logs, account data, payment data, and retention.
  7. Ownership and jurisdiction.
  8. Marketing phrases such as military-grade encryption or absolute anonymity, which are not meaningful evidence by themselves.

An audit is a snapshot of the systems and scope examined. NordVPN calls its 2025 engagement point-in-time, and IVPN explains that a provider can change systems after an audit. Proton’s audit scope has also been questioned by RTINGS. The useful question is not simply whether a company says audited; ask who audited what, when, under which standard, whether the full report is public, and whether the assessment covered logging, apps, servers, or infrastructure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jurisdiction is a factor, not a verdict

Jurisdiction affects data-retention obligations, government-access procedures, corporate disclosure duties, and the practical consequences of a subpoena or gag order. It does not prove what a provider logs. PIA is U.S.-based yet points to court-tested no-logs claims; Surfshark operates from the Netherlands and has current no-logs assessments; Mullvad operates from Sweden while minimizing account data. Compare jurisdiction with architecture, ownership, audits, legal history, and actual data practices rather than using a simplistic Fourteen Eyes score.

Are free VPNs safe?

Some reputable free tiers are reasonable; unknown free VPN apps should not be trusted just because they have a high app-store rating or many downloads. A free service still needs a business model. If the provider does not clearly explain how it funds infrastructure, it may monetize advertising, analytics, traffic, or account data in ways that conflict with your reason for using a VPN.

A 2026 NDSS study examined 281 popular Android VPN apps. It found that 61 transmitted some data unencrypted, five sent sensitive VPN configuration files in cleartext, 29 leaked user traffic including DNS or browsing traffic, 76 transmitted Android Advertising IDs, and 107 failed assessed security practices in their VPN configuration files. The study does not prove that every free VPN is unsafe, but it is strong evidence against selecting an unknown app based only on the word free. See the NDSS study and methodology.

Free plans worth considering

Free plan What you get What you give up
Proton VPN Free Unlimited data, no ads, no artificial speed limit, open-source apps, and core privacy policy Fewer locations, automatic or limited server selection, and fewer features; paid-tier streaming and P2P behavior should not be assumed
Windscribe Free 10 GB per month with a confirmed email, 2 GB without one, 10 countries, unlimited devices, open-source desktop apps, split tunneling, and firewall features Monthly data cap, fewer locations, and Canada-based operation

Do not confuse a free tier with a free trial. A trial may convert to a paid plan, while a refund guarantee may require an upfront charge and may not apply to purchases through every app store or promotion.

How to choose and test a VPN before keeping it

  1. Define the use case. Decide whether the priority is public Wi-Fi, privacy, streaming, many devices, Linux, P2P, gaming, travel, or censorship resistance.
  2. Read the privacy policy. Look for activity logs, connection logs, IP-address handling, account data, payment data, crash reports, and retention.
  3. Check audit details. Record the auditor, assessment date, systems covered, audit type, limitations, and whether the complete report is public.
  4. Confirm platform support. Verify your exact operating systems, router model, smart-TV platform, browser, and manual configuration needs.
  5. Count simultaneous connections. Distinguish simultaneous connections from installations, family sharing, and bundled security-product limits.
  6. Calculate the real cost. Write down the total charged today, effective monthly rate, renewal price, currency, tax, promotion period, and refund deadline.
  7. Install from an official source. Use the provider’s official website or the official app store, not a modified APK or an unknown download mirror.
  8. Enable protection first. Turn on the kill switch, DNS leak protection, and IPv6 leak protection if available. Start with the automatic or recommended protocol.
  9. Verify the connection. Confirm that the public IP changes, the VPN reports a connected state, and the provider’s own leak test does not show your normal DNS or IPv6 path.
  10. Test your real services. Try the streaming services, banking sites, work applications, games, video calls, torrents or lawful P2P workloads, and smart-home devices you actually use.
  11. Test failure behavior. Temporarily interrupt the connection and verify that the kill switch blocks traffic rather than silently falling back to your ordinary connection.
  12. Test support and cancel deliberately. If it fails your needs, request a refund before the deadline. If you keep it, disable auto-renewal or calendar the renewal date so a promotional price does not become an unexpected charge.

Troubleshooting common VPN problems

A streaming service says you are using a VPN

  1. Try the provider’s recommended streaming server.
  2. Change to another server in the same country.
  3. Restart the streaming app or browser.
  4. Clear the app or DNS cache where appropriate.
  5. Disable split tunneling for the streaming app.
  6. Try the browser version instead of the native app, or the reverse.
  7. Ask the VPN provider’s support team whether a current server is supported.
  8. Turn off the VPN if the service’s plan or policy does not support VPN connections.

Changing servers is not a guarantee. A service may block the entire address range, reject a live event or ad-supported plan, or enforce regional licensing independently of the VPN.

Banking, shopping, or work apps keep asking for verification

A VPN can trigger fraud alerts, repeated logins, CAPTCHAs, incorrect pricing or shipping information, and location checks. Use split tunneling for the affected app, choose a nearby server, or disconnect only for that trusted service if necessary. Avoid changing countries repeatedly during an active banking session, and never use an unknown free VPN for financial accounts.

Mullvad documents CAPTCHA problems with some Cloudflare-protected sites and suggests changing servers or using its SOCKS5 option. SOCKS5 is an advanced configuration and should be used only when you understand which traffic it affects.

The VPN is slow

  1. Test without the VPN to establish a baseline.
  2. Try a nearby server rather than a distant location.
  3. Switch to WireGuard or the provider’s recommended fast protocol.
  4. Reduce extra routing features such as multi-hop or Secure Core when they are not needed.
  5. Try another time of day and another Wi-Fi or wired connection.
  6. Compare latency and upload speed, not only maximum download speed.

The VPN will not connect

  1. Update the app and confirm that your subscription is active.
  2. Try automatic protocol selection.
  3. If UDP is blocked, try OpenVPN TCP or another obfuscated mode supported by the provider.
  4. Try a different server or network, such as mobile data instead of public Wi-Fi.
  5. Check whether another VPN, antivirus, firewall, or corporate policy is blocking the connection.
  6. Use the provider’s official support channel rather than downloading a supposedly fixed configuration from a stranger.

Important VPN features explained

Kill switch

A kill switch blocks traffic when the VPN tunnel drops, reducing the chance that an app silently reconnects over your ordinary internet connection. Test it on your own device because behavior can differ by operating system, app version, split-tunneling rule, and whether you use an always-on VPN mode.

Split tunneling

Split tunneling lets selected apps use the VPN while others use the normal connection. It can fix banking, local-printer, streaming, or work-app problems and reduce unnecessary latency. The trade-off is that excluded traffic is not protected by the VPN. Check whether your provider offers split tunneling on the specific platform you use; feature sets often differ between Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux.

Multi-hop and Secure Core

Multi-hop routes traffic through more than one VPN server. Proton’s Secure Core is a related privacy architecture that can add an extra server before traffic exits through the VPN network. These features may reduce trust in a single ordinary entry point, but they generally add latency and do not make account activity anonymous.

Port forwarding

Port forwarding allows some inbound connections through the VPN. It can help certain P2P applications and self-hosted services, but it may expose a service to the public internet and increase abuse or blacklisting risk. PIA supports it; Mullvad removed support for forwarded ports, and IVPN lists its absence as a limitation. Ordinary users should not choose or enable the feature without a specific reason.

WireGuard and OpenVPN

WireGuard is a compact modern VPN protocol built around well-known cryptographic primitives and is often the first choice for speed and quick reconnection. OpenVPN remains useful for compatibility, TCP transport, and networks that block UDP. Neither protocol makes a provider trustworthy by itself: implementation, key management, server design, app security, and logging practices still matter.

What a VPN cannot promise

Claim Reality
A VPN makes me anonymous It changes the network path and public IP, but accounts, cookies, browser fingerprints, devices, payments, and voluntary disclosures can still identify you.
A VPN protects me from malware Some providers include domain filtering, but a VPN is not endpoint security and cannot clean an infected device or make phishing safe.
A VPN guarantees Netflix access Streaming services detect and block VPN addresses; access varies by service, region, plan, server, app, and date.
A no-logs claim proves zero data collection Read the complete privacy policy and audit scope. Activity logs, connection metadata, account data, payment records, and crash reports are different categories.
A VPN always makes public Wi-Fi safe The tunnel protects traffic between your device and the VPN server, but compromised devices, malicious websites, phishing, weak passwords, and unsafe downloads remain risks.
More servers means a better VPN Capacity, physical versus virtual locations, ownership, congestion, IP reputation, proximity, and plan availability matter more than a large headline number.
A VPN always improves speed or ping Encryption and routing can add overhead. A nearby, lightly loaded server may help, but a distant or congested server can slow the connection.
A VPN is the same as Tor A commercial VPN leaves one provider as a central trust point. Tor uses a different, usually slower model and is not a universal replacement for banking, streaming, or ordinary home use.

VPN versus Tor, HTTPS, and secure DNS

HTTPS encrypts an individual web connection and is essential whether or not you use a VPN. Secure DNS protects DNS lookups from some observers but does not create a complete encrypted tunnel for all device traffic. A VPN protects the device-to-VPN-server path and changes the apparent public IP, but transfers trust to the provider. Tor is designed for stronger anonymity through layered routing and compartmentalization, but it is slower, more frequently blocked, and unsuitable for many streaming and banking workflows.

For high-risk anonymity, a commercial VPN alone is not enough. Account separation, payment choices, device security, browser behavior, operational security, and possibly Tor or compartmentalized devices matter. Tor is not a magic shield either; logging in to an identifiable account or revealing personal information can defeat the anonymity goal.

Bottom line: which VPN should you buy?

Buy NordVPN if you want the strongest general-purpose balance and do not mind checking renewal pricing. Buy Surfshark if a household needs unlimited simultaneous connections and good mainstream performance. Start with Proton VPN Free if you want a reputable, unlimited-data free plan, or choose its paid service for stronger privacy features and broader access. Pick ExpressVPN when simplicity is worth paying for. Choose PIA for open-source apps, Linux, configuration depth, and port forwarding. Choose Mullvad when no-email numbered accounts, cash or cryptocurrency payments, and flat €5 pricing outweigh streaming and device-count limitations. Choose IVPN when you prefer a smaller privacy specialist that states its limitations clearly. Choose Windscribe Free when a 2–10 GB monthly allowance is sufficient.

Whichever service you select, judge it by the observer you are trying to block, the provider you are willing to trust, the devices you need to cover, and the total cost after renewal—not by a server-count headline or the phrase no logs alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is using a VPN legal?

VPNs are legal for ordinary privacy and security uses in many countries, but laws and restrictions vary by location. A VPN does not legalize copyright infringement, fraud, unauthorized access, or activity prohibited by local law. Some countries restrict VPN providers or require approved services, so check the rules where you are physically located.

Does a VPN work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. The major providers in this guide offer mobile apps, but features can differ from their Windows, macOS, Linux, and router apps. Install only from the provider’s official website or the official Apple or Google app store, then verify the kill switch, always-on behavior, split tunneling, and protocol options available on your specific phone.

Will a VPN slow down my internet?

It can. Encryption, server distance, congestion, protocol, Wi-Fi quality, and device hardware all affect performance. Start with a nearby server and WireGuard or the provider’s recommended fast protocol. Test latency, upload, and real applications rather than relying on a single advertised speed result.

Can websites still track me while I use a VPN?

Yes. A VPN changes the network IP that websites see, but logged-in accounts, cookies, browser fingerprinting, advertising IDs, payment details, device identifiers, and information you provide can still identify or track you.

Can I use a VPN with Netflix or other streaming services?

Sometimes, but there is no permanent guarantee. Streaming companies block VPN IP addresses, and behavior varies by country, server, app, account plan, and date. Netflix says VPNs are unsupported for live events and ad-supported viewing experiences. If a service fails, try the provider’s recommended server or turn off the VPN if the service or plan requires it.

Are free VPNs safe?

Reputable free tiers such as Proton VPN Free and Windscribe Free are different from unknown free apps with opaque ownership and aggressive tracking. A 2026 NDSS study of 281 Android VPN apps found multiple classes of encryption, traffic-leak, advertising-ID, and configuration-security problems. Evaluate the provider’s business model, privacy policy, app security, and limitations before installing any free VPN.

What is a VPN kill switch?

A kill switch blocks internet traffic when the VPN tunnel disconnects, helping prevent accidental fallback to your ordinary connection. Enable it and test its behavior because rules can differ by platform, app version, and split-tunneling configuration.

Should I use a VPN for banking?

A VPN can protect the network path on public Wi-Fi, but it can also trigger fraud checks, CAPTCHAs, or location verification. Use a reputable provider, keep HTTPS and multifactor authentication enabled, choose a nearby server, and use split tunneling or disconnect temporarily if the bank’s trusted app behaves incorrectly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a VPN protect every device in my home?

Only if the device is covered by a VPN app, manual configuration, or a VPN-enabled router. Smart TVs, consoles, streaming boxes, and IoT devices may need router setup or a provider-specific feature. Also check whether the provider’s connection limit means simultaneous connections rather than unlimited installations.

Is WireGuard better than OpenVPN?

Neither is universally better. WireGuard is compact and often fast, making it a good first choice for ordinary use. OpenVPN remains valuable for compatibility, TCP transport, and networks where UDP is blocked. The provider’s implementation, key management, leak protection, and logging practices matter more than the protocol name alone.

Is a VPN better than Tor?

They solve different problems. A VPN is generally faster and easier for public Wi-Fi, travel, streaming, and ordinary privacy, but the VPN provider remains a central trust point. Tor can provide stronger anonymity properties when used correctly, but it is slower, often blocked, and unsuitable for many banking and streaming tasks.

What happens if my VPN disconnects?

Without a kill switch, applications may continue over your ordinary connection, exposing your normal IP address and network path. With a correctly configured kill switch, traffic should be blocked until the tunnel reconnects. Test this behavior before relying on it, especially when using split tunneling or mobile devices.
