NordVPN is the clearest documented match for a Windows VPN that both blocks all unprotected traffic and keeps trying to restore the tunnel. Its Windows client offers a system-wide Internet Kill Switch, an App Kill Switch for selected programs, and continuous retry after a dropped connection. ExpressVPN is a strong alternative when you want auto-connect rules tied to startup, Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, or a specific network. Proton VPN is suited to an always-on, privacy-first setup, but the cited Windows documentation does not establish a comparable automatic-reconnection guarantee.
A kill switch and automatic reconnection are different controls. The kill switch prevents traffic from escaping outside the VPN; reconnection logic attempts to bring the encrypted tunnel back. A reliable Windows setup needs to handle both failure stages.
What a Windows VPN kill switch actually does
A VPN kill switch is a traffic-blocking safeguard. When the encrypted connection to the VPN server disappears, the client stops internet access instead of allowing Windows to continue over the ordinary network connection. That protects against a brief exposure during Wi‑Fi changes, tunnel crashes, sleep and wake events, or server handoffs.

The important question is scope. A system-wide or Internet Kill Switch blocks all internet traffic from the computer. An App Kill Switch blocks only programs you select. The second option can be useful when just one application must never connect outside the VPN, but it is not equivalent to protecting every browser tab, background service, update process, or command-line tool.

Kill switch versus automatic reconnection
- Kill switch: enforces a fail-closed state. Traffic is denied while the VPN is unavailable.
- Automatic reconnection: retries or initiates a new VPN session after a disconnect.
- Combined behavior: the computer remains offline until a new VPN tunnel is active, then normal traffic resumes.
A client can have one feature without the other. A permanent kill switch may block perfectly but leave you offline until you reconnect manually. Conversely, a client may reconnect quickly but expose traffic during the interval if blocking is not enabled.
Quick comparison
| Provider | Windows kill-switch scope | Documented behavior after a drop | Reconnect controls or evidence | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Internet Kill Switch for all traffic; App Kill Switch for selected programs | Blocks internet when disconnected from VPN servers | Vendor states that the Windows client automatically and continuously retries after a VPN connection drops | Readers who want the strongest documented match for both requirements |
| ExpressVPN | Internet Kill Switch blocks all internet traffic after an unexpected drop | Traffic remains blocked while the VPN is unavailable | Auto-connect rules can apply at startup, on secure or unsecured Wi‑Fi, on Ethernet, or for a specified network | Readers who want explicit network-triggered connection rules |
| Proton VPN | Advanced/Permanent Kill Switch prevents internet access unless a VPN connection is active | Fail-closed protection is documented | The cited Windows material does not establish a vendor-published automatic-reconnection guarantee | Privacy-first users who prefer always-on blocking and will verify reconnect behavior themselves |
This comparison deliberately does not rank price, server count, protocol defaults, speed, or Windows-version compatibility. Those details are edition-, region-, and date-dependent, and they are not established by the evidence used here.
1. NordVPN: strongest documented match for kill switch plus reconnect
NordVPN is the most straightforward answer when both parts of the requirement matter. Its Windows documentation describes an Internet Kill Switch that cuts off the internet connection when the device is disconnected from NordVPN servers. That is the system-wide behavior most people mean when they ask whether a VPN will stop all traffic after the tunnel fails.

Choose the protection scope
The Windows client also provides an App Kill Switch. You can use it to shut down selected programs after VPN connectivity is lost. This is narrower than the Internet Kill Switch: applications outside your selection may still use the normal connection unless the system-wide control is enabled.
- Use the Internet Kill Switch when no application should communicate outside the VPN.
- Use the App Kill Switch when only specified programs need a fail-closed rule.
- Do not treat an App Kill Switch as proof that every Windows process is blocked.
What happens after a disconnect
NordVPN states that it “automatically and continuously retries if a VPN connection drops.” That wording addresses the reconnect requirement directly rather than merely promising that a kill switch will remain active. While retries are in progress, the kill switch is the protection that prevents ordinary internet traffic from escaping.

Practical setup sequence
- Open the NordVPN Windows application and locate its kill-switch settings.
- Enable the Internet Kill Switch for system-wide blocking, or select the App Kill Switch if your policy applies only to named programs.
- Confirm that the client’s automatic connection behavior is enabled rather than relying on a manual connection each time.
- Connect to a VPN server and verify that ordinary browsing works.
- Test the failure state before relying on the setup for sensitive work: disconnect the VPN session and confirm that traffic stops, then allow the client to retry and confirm that traffic returns only after the VPN is active again.
The last two checks distinguish a real fail-closed configuration from a setting that merely appears enabled in the interface.
2. ExpressVPN: best for explicit startup and network rules
ExpressVPN documents an Internet Kill Switch for Windows. If the VPN connection unexpectedly drops, the control blocks all internet traffic. That gives it the required system-wide protection rather than an application-only safeguard.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Auto-connect conditions
Its Windows setup documentation also describes auto-connect choices for several conditions: starting Windows, joining secure Wi‑Fi, joining unsecured Wi‑Fi, connecting through Ethernet, or using a specific network. These rules are useful when a laptop moves between home Wi‑Fi, public hotspots, office Ethernet, and travel networks.
Network-triggered automation is different from a continuous retry statement. A startup or network rule tells the client when to initiate a connection. It does not, by itself, describe every possible tunnel failure or the exact retry interval after a crash. Keep the Internet Kill Switch enabled so the computer remains blocked while the client works to establish a new session.
How to configure a travel laptop
- Open the ExpressVPN Windows settings and enable the Internet Kill Switch.
- Turn on auto-connect at Windows startup if the device should be protected before you open applications.
- Add the network conditions that match your routine: secure Wi‑Fi, unsecured Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, or a named network.
- Connect once on each relevant network and verify that the expected rule activates.
- Simulate a brief connection loss and check that all internet traffic is blocked until the VPN is restored.
For a machine that must never use a direct connection, select the broadest startup and network coverage that matches your use, then keep the kill switch enabled even when you expect auto-connect to work.

3. Proton VPN: permanent blocking, reconnect behavior to verify
Proton VPN’s Advanced/Permanent Kill Switch is designed to prevent internet access unless a Proton VPN connection is active. That makes it an appropriate choice for an always-on policy: the computer should be offline rather than fall back to the ordinary network.
The cited Windows material supports the permanent kill-switch behavior but does not provide a comparable vendor-published guarantee of automatic reconnection. Do not infer continuous retry from the existence of a permanent kill switch. Before adopting Proton VPN for unattended use, verify how the current Windows client behaves after Wi‑Fi changes, sleep and wake, a server interruption, and an application restart.
Verification checklist
- Enable the Advanced/Permanent Kill Switch.
- Connect to a VPN server and confirm normal traffic.
- Interrupt the VPN connection and confirm that internet access stops completely.
- Observe whether the client reconnects without manual action.
- Repeat the test after changing networks and after waking Windows from sleep.
If the client remains blocked until you reconnect manually, that is expected fail-closed behavior, not a failed kill switch. It simply means you should not describe the setup as automatically reconnecting.
How to choose between the three
Choose NordVPN when both requirements are non-negotiable
NordVPN has the clearest documentation for a system-wide Windows kill switch plus continuous automatic retry. It also offers a selected-application mode, so you can choose between protecting the entire machine and enforcing a narrower application policy.
Choose ExpressVPN when network context drives your workflow
ExpressVPN is the better fit when you want connection rules tied to startup, Wi‑Fi security status, Ethernet, or a named network. Its Internet Kill Switch supplies the fail-closed layer while those rules determine when the client should connect.

Choose Proton VPN when permanent blocking is the priority
Proton VPN fits users who would rather remain offline than risk a direct connection. Treat automatic reconnection as an item to test in the current Windows client, because the cited documentation does not establish a matching guarantee.
What happens when Wi‑Fi drops?
A Wi‑Fi interruption can produce several different events: the local network disappears, Windows switches to another adapter, the VPN tunnel times out, or the VPN application itself stops responding. A reliable configuration should block traffic during the gap and reconnect only through the VPN.
- Network loss: the VPN tunnel becomes unusable.
- Kill switch engages: internet traffic is denied instead of falling back to the ordinary adapter.
- Reconnect logic runs: the client retries continuously or applies its configured startup/network rule, depending on the product.
- Tunnel returns: traffic resumes once the VPN connection is active.
If browsing continues immediately after the Wi‑Fi interruption, the system-wide kill switch is not protecting the traffic you expected it to protect, or you are observing an application-only rule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to test a Windows kill switch safely
Test from a low-risk session before using the configuration for banking, work credentials, or other sensitive traffic. The aim is to observe both the blocked state and the recovery state.
Baseline test
- Connect the VPN and open a few ordinary websites.
- Record which client mode is enabled: system-wide Internet Kill Switch, App Kill Switch, or permanent kill switch.
- Close unrelated applications so their background traffic does not confuse the result.
Unexpected-disconnect test
- Use the VPN client’s disconnect control or temporarily interrupt the network connection.
- Immediately try a new web page and a previously open page.
- For a system-wide setting, both should fail while the VPN is down. For an App Kill Switch, only the selected programs are expected to be stopped.
- Restore the network and watch whether the client reconnects automatically.
- Confirm that browsing resumes only after the client reports an active VPN connection.
Forced-failure test
A graceful disconnect is not the same as an application crash. If your risk model includes client failure, test what happens when the VPN application is forcibly closed or becomes unresponsive. Independent testing has reported that forced crashes of two major Windows VPN applications left traffic blocked until the VPN connection was re-established; that kind of test is stronger evidence for crash handling than a vendor’s normal disconnect demonstration. Results can vary with client version and operating conditions, so treat them as evidence about the tested builds rather than a universal promise.

Network-change test
- Connect on one network.
- Move to another Wi‑Fi network or switch between Wi‑Fi and Ethernet.
- Check whether traffic is blocked during the transition.
- Check whether the configured startup or network rule initiates a new VPN session.
Common failure modes and fixes
Traffic stops but never returns
This usually means the kill switch is working while automatic reconnection is disabled, unavailable, or unable to authenticate. Keep the block enabled, inspect the client’s connection state, and reconnect manually rather than disabling protection to regain access.
Traffic returns before the VPN reconnects
That is a fail-open result. Check that the system-wide Internet or permanent kill switch is enabled, not only an App Kill Switch. Also check whether the traffic came from an application outside the selected list.
Only one program is blocked
An App Kill Switch is intentionally selective. Switch to the Internet Kill Switch when every browser, service, and command-line process must be denied during a tunnel failure.
Reconnect works on startup but not after a drop
Startup auto-connect and post-drop retry are separate behaviors. A startup rule may be correctly configured while the client offers no continuous retry guarantee. NordVPN’s documentation explicitly addresses continuous retry; ExpressVPN’s documentation emphasizes startup and network conditions; Proton VPN’s cited material establishes permanent blocking but not automatic reconnection.
The computer appears offline after changing networks
That can be the intended result of a kill switch during reconnection. Wait for the VPN status to return before testing traffic. If it remains blocked, use the client’s manual reconnect control while preserving the kill switch.
Questions to ask before relying on a provider
- Does the Windows setting block all traffic or only selected applications?
- Does the provider document behavior after an unexpected disconnect, or only after a normal user-initiated disconnect?
- Is automatic reconnection described as continuous retry, or only as a startup and network trigger?
- Does the protection survive an application crash, not just a tunnel timeout?
- What happens during Wi‑Fi-to-Ethernet changes and sleep/wake transitions?
- Can you test the current Windows client on your own hardware before making it part of an always-on policy?
Bottom line
For the narrow combination of a reliable Windows kill switch and documented automatic reconnection, NordVPN is the strongest choice in the available evidence. ExpressVPN is compelling when explicit startup and network-based auto-connect rules matter most. Proton VPN provides well-defined permanent blocking, but its automatic-reconnection behavior should be verified rather than assumed. Whichever client you choose, enable the broadest kill-switch scope your policy requires and test an actual disconnect before trusting the setup.
