ExpressVPN is the clearest Shield-compatible choice in the available documentation: its current Android TV setup guide explicitly names NVIDIA Shield and explains how to install the app. Proton VPN documents an Android TV app and useful TV controls, but the cited guide does not explicitly list Shield, so check app availability on your device before choosing it. Neither provider’s documentation establishes which VPN is fastest on Shield or reliably unlocks a particular streaming service.
How to choose a VPN for NVIDIA Shield
Start with compatibility, not a provider’s broad speed or streaming claims. The Shield runs an Android TV environment, so you need an app that is available for your device and operating-system version. Prefer installation from the Shield’s app store; sideloading should be a fallback using an official provider APK.
Then compare the features that affect everyday TV use: startup auto-connect, network protection if the VPN disconnects, protocol choices, and split tunneling if you want only selected apps to use the VPN. Finally, confirm that the provider’s plan supports the streaming features you need.

Proton VPN is worth considering if its Android TV app appears in your device’s store and its documented controls suit your setup. What the feature claims do—and don’t—tell you
Country counts describe provider-reported service scale, not speed, latency, or streaming reliability on a Shield. As of October 7, 2026, Proton VPN’s page claimed “140+ countries,” while ExpressVPN’s page claimed “113 countries.” These figures are provider claims and can change; they do not establish that one service performs better for your location or apps. Likewise, a provider’s statement that it supports streaming is not proof that a particular platform’s catalog will work from your region. Install and configure the VPN on your Shield
ExpressVPN
- Open Google Play on the Shield and search for ExpressVPN. Install the app from the official store.
- Open it and sign in, then choose a server and connect.
- If the app is unavailable in Play Store, follow ExpressVPN’s official Android TV guide for its APK sideload route. Do not download the APK from a third-party site.
- Review startup auto-connect and network-protection settings in the app. The guide says the kill switch is off by default; enable it if you want internet access blocked when the VPN cannot connect or reconnect.
ExpressVPN’s setup guide was last updated September 22, 2026, and says its instructions cover Android 7.0 and later. Labels and availability can change, so consult the current setup guide if your menus differ.

- Check whether Proton VPN is available in your Shield’s app store, since the cited Android TV guide does not specifically name NVIDIA Shield.
- Install the app, then use its QR-code or code sign-in flow as directed on screen.
- Select a server and connect. If desired, review the available protocol choices and startup auto-connect setting.
- If you configure split tunneling to include or exclude apps, reconnect for the change to take effect. Proton says split tunneling and kill switch are incompatible on most platforms, so check the current app behavior before relying on both together.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose ExpressVPN if explicit Shield support is your priority. Its setup documentation names Shield and gives an official installation route.
- Consider Proton VPN if the app is available on your Shield and you value its documented controls. Its Android TV guide covers protocol selection and auto-connect, while split tunneling can route selected apps differently.
