There is no single best VPN for every Netgear router. The right choice depends on the exact model and whether you want the router to connect out to a commercial VPN provider or let you connect remotely into your home network. Those are different functions: NETGEAR’s built-in VPN Service is for remote access, not proof that all household traffic is routed through a commercial VPN.
First, distinguish a VPN client from a VPN server
A VPN client on a router connects the household’s outbound traffic to a VPN provider. A VPN server lets you connect back to your home network while away. NETGEAR’s Nighthawk VPN Service documentation covers the second use. Turning it on does not automatically route home devices through NordVPN or another commercial service. NETGEAR’s setup guide describes OpenVPN software on individual Windows clients and Dynamic DNS for remote access.
NETGEAR says its routers work with OpenVPN version 2.7.1 or earlier for this VPN Service, according to its support page last updated July 7, 2025. That version statement applies to NETGEAR’s documented remote-access setup; it does not establish commercial VPN-client support.
Which Netgear VPN option fits your goal?
| Approach | What it does | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Keep stock firmware and use NETGEAR VPN Service | Allows supported individual devices to connect remotely into the home network. | Does not establish that the router can send household traffic through a commercial VPN provider. |
| Flash a compatible Netgear router with DD-WRT | May enable VPN-client configuration on certain models. | Support is model-specific; flashing can damage the router or void its warranty. |
| Install ExpressVPN router firmware on a supported Netgear model | ExpressVPN provides setup instructions for five named models. | Security updates for all Netgear models in its guide have ended, and installation replaces existing settings. |
| Use a VPN-capable or preconfigured replacement router | Can provide a router-based VPN client without modifying a stock Netgear device. | Verify the exact router, protocol, provider support, availability, and support terms before buying. |
Can you set up a Netgear router with NordVPN?
NordVPN’s compatibility guidance says native Netgear routers cannot serve as OpenVPN clients. NordVPN also notes that some routers may be configured after installing third-party firmware, but this is not a universal Netgear capability. Its Netgear-specific guidance says to check whether the precise model supports DD-WRT before considering a flash.
#1 Best Overall
- FASTER, FARTHER, MORE RELIABLE WIFI: A dedicated dual-band WiFi 7 router built to deliver the full speed of your internet plan across a medium to large home of streaming, video calls, gaming, and smart devices.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- WIFI 7 SPEED FOR TODAY'S FASTEST INTERNET PLANS: Up to 6.5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. Keeps every device connected at the same time with MU-MIMO and OFDMA. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,500 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Check compatibility before changing firmware
- Identify the exact model and hardware revision. Do not rely on the Nighthawk or Netgear family name alone.
- Check the model against DD-WRT’s supported-device information. NordVPN’s router setup guidance treats router and firmware compatibility as prerequisites.
- Confirm the required VPN-client protocol and setup instructions. Provider support for routers generally depends on firmware and protocol, not just the manufacturer.
- Weigh the risk before flashing. NordVPN warns that flashing is at the user’s risk and can damage the router or void the warranty.
This route is for users prepared to verify device-specific support and accept the consequences of modifying firmware—not a general recommendation for every Netgear owner.
What to know about ExpressVPN firmware for Netgear
ExpressVPN lists these Netgear models in its router-firmware setup guide: R6300v2, R6400v2, R6700v3, Nighthawk R7000, and R7000P. It also says security updates for all supported Netgear models have ended. That makes this a legacy compatibility route, not an uncomplicated way to make an older router secure for continued use.
Rank #2
- Coverage up to 2,000 sq. ft. for up to 25 devices
- Ultrafast AX3000 speeds up to 3Gbps with WiFi 6 technology for uninterrupted streaming, HD video gaming, and web conferencing
- This router does not include a built-in cable modem. A separate cable modem (with coax inputs) is required for internet service.
- Connects to your existing cable modem and replaces your WiFi router. Compatible with any internet service provider up to 1Gbps including cable, satellite, fiber, and DSL
- Plug in computers, game consoles, streaming players, and more with 4 x 1G Ethernet ports
The installation replaces existing router settings, including the Wi-Fi name and password. ExpressVPN says reverting to default Netgear firmware is possible. Review the provider’s Netgear installation guide and its router FAQs for current model-specific details before proceeding.
When a replacement router is the better answer
If you want whole-home VPN coverage and your Netgear router lacks a supported VPN client, a router that explicitly documents VPN-client support—or preconfigured VPN hardware—may be a more direct option than flashing the router you already own. NordVPN’s setup materials list several router-platform paths and identify FlashRouters as a preconfigured option; GL.iNet also appears among the setup paths. These references do not mean every model supports every protocol or is currently available through a particular retailer.
Rank #3
- FASTER, FARTHER, MORE RELIABLE WIFI: A dedicated dual-band WiFi 7 router built to keep up with a growing home of streaming, video calls, gaming, and smart home devices.
- WIFI 7 THAT KEEPS UP WITH A BUSY HOME: Up to 5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. MU-MIMO and OFDMA let multiple devices send and receive data simultaneously. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Before choosing replacement hardware, verify the exact model’s VPN-client protocols, firmware support and security-update status, provider setup instructions, expected coverage for your home, and whether devices can bypass the VPN when needed. The reviewed official guidance does not provide comparable measured throughput for these Netgear approaches, so there is no evidence-based performance ranking here.

- Want remote access to your home network? NETGEAR VPN Service may suit that purpose; follow NETGEAR’s client and version requirements.
- Want household traffic to use a commercial VPN? Confirm that the exact router and firmware support a VPN client for your provider. NETGEAR’s built-in VPN Service is not a substitute.
- Considering a firmware flash? Proceed only if the exact model is supported and you accept possible device damage and warranty consequences.
- Considering ExpressVPN firmware for a listed model? Account for the fact that security updates for those supported Netgear models have ended.
- Buying hardware? Choose by documented model-level compatibility and security support, not by a brand name or a broad claim that a router is “VPN-ready.”
NordVPN Support summarizes its native-router guidance this way: “Netgear routers provide a great Wi-Fi connection; however, they cannot serve as OpenVPN clients.” This describes NordVPN’s guidance for native Netgear firmware; it does not rule out every third-party firmware configuration on every model.
