There is no evidence-backed VPN winner for every person in the Netherlands. DutchTimes and TechRadar name NordVPN their overall pick, while VPNExpert selects ExpressVPN after reporting four weeks of Amsterdam-based testing in April 2026. Those are different publishers’ verdicts—not a single independent consensus. Choose by what you need, and treat published test results as dated snapshots rather than guarantees.
Which VPN is best for the Netherlands?
If you want a starting point, NordVPN is the most frequently named overall option in the sources reviewed: DutchTimes chose it in its Netherlands comparison and TechRadar in its general 2026 guide. VPNExpert instead chose ExpressVPN after testing from Amsterdam in April 2026. These rankings reflect different methods and scopes, so neither establishes a universal best choice. DutchTimes’ Netherlands comparison, VPNExpert’s testing, and TechRadar’s general VPN guide should be read as editorial recommendations, not as results from one shared test.
For an informed choice, compare privacy evidence, performance on the routes you use, streaming needs, device support, and the full subscription cost. A VPN can improve privacy in some situations, but it does not make someone anonymous or protect against every online threat. Consumentenbond’s guidance, updated July 20, 2026, puts it plainly: “Voor je privacy biedt het voordelen, maar het is geen wondermiddel” (“For your privacy it offers benefits, but it is not a miracle solution”). Consumentenbond’s VPN selection guidance also says it screens selected services for jurisdiction, privacy terms, OpenVPN support, Windows software, and Netherlands servers.

How to match a VPN to your needs
Privacy and trust
Look beyond a provider’s headquarters or a “no logs” label. Security.org says its Netherlands assessment considered provider headquarters, legal exposure, and whether no-logs policies had independent audits. Consumentenbond likewise considers location and privacy conditions. An audit is useful evidence, but its value depends on what was examined, when, and by whom; an audit of a particular system or policy is not proof of every privacy claim. Security.org’s Netherlands assessment describes its framework.

Speed for local use versus international routes
Performance to a nearby Netherlands server and performance when routing to another country are different questions. Security.org says it tested Netherlands-based connections as well as routes to the US, UK, and Germany. VPNExpert reports separate Amsterdam-to-Netherlands-server and Amsterdam-to-New-York results in its April 2026 test. Those findings apply to the publishers’ test setups and periods, not necessarily to your internet provider, device, protocol, or time of day. Consumentenbond explicitly says it lacks comparative data to name the fastest provider because speed varies by country and time.
Streaming: where you are and what you want to watch
There are two distinct use cases: watching Dutch services while travelling abroad, and trying to access foreign catalogs from within the Netherlands. A publisher’s result for one platform or direction does not establish success for another. Security.org and VPNExpert include streaming checks in their Netherlands-specific methods; VPNExpert warns that services change VPN detection, so results can change. Treat any compatibility claim as a dated test observation, not a permanent access promise.

Devices and ease of use
Check support for the devices you actually use, such as Windows, phones, a router, or a smart TV, along with the account’s connection or installation limits. Confirm current plan limits and device support directly with the provider before subscribing. The available evidence does not establish a complete, current provider-by-provider comparison of router and smart-TV support.

Total subscription cost
Compare the amount charged upfront, the introductory term, the renewal price, and refund terms—not only a headline monthly equivalent. DutchTimes’ prices are the lowest 24-month introductory rates it found in April 2026. VPNExpert notes that two-year subscriptions may require full payment upfront and that many plans automatically renew at a higher regular rate. These are historical comparison figures, not verified checkout prices for October 2026; taxes, offers, and terms can differ by market and change over time. DutchTimes and VPNExpert explain their respective comparison assumptions.

What the Netherlands comparisons actually tested
The sources do not use one common protocol, route, date, or scoring system, so their verdicts and measurements should not be merged into a single league table.
- DutchTimes: says it tested more than 30 providers during March and April 2026 and names NordVPN overall in its Netherlands guide. Its pricing comparison uses the lowest 24-month introductory offers available in April 2026. Read the DutchTimes comparison.
- VPNExpert: says it tested ten subscriptions for four weeks in Amsterdam in April 2026, including Netherlands and New York routes and Dutch streaming services. It names ExpressVPN as its pick. Its results are specific to that test window and setup. Read VPNExpert’s test.
- TechRadar: names NordVPN its best overall in a general 2026 VPN guide, rather than a Netherlands-only test. Read TechRadar’s guide.
- Consumentenbond: sets out screening criteria and identifies services with Netherlands servers, but says it lacks comparative speed data. Its guidance is useful for selection criteria, not a fastest-provider ranking. Read Consumentenbond’s guidance.
DutchTimes and VPNExpert describe Proton VPN as privacy-focused. That is their editorial characterization; the evidence available here does not establish current audit scope, plan limits, or official subscription terms for a detailed comparison. Security.org provides a Netherlands-specific evaluation framework, but the referenced material does not establish a complete provider-by-provider table for this article.

Is a free VPN safe to use?
“Free” alone does not tell you whether a VPN is safe or suitable. Evaluate the same essentials as for a paid plan: what data the service collects, how its privacy policy is supported, which features or usage limits apply, and whether its software fits your devices. The evidence reviewed here does not establish a specific free service as a safe recommendation, so it would be misleading to name one as a best choice.
Will a VPN make your internet slower?
It can affect speed, but the amount depends on the route, server, protocol, network conditions, and time. A nearby Netherlands server and a distant international endpoint may perform differently. Consumentenbond says it cannot identify the fastest provider because speeds vary by country and time; publisher test results from Amsterdam are useful context, not a prediction for an individual connection. If speed matters, check the service’s current refund terms and test the routes and activities you actually use.
Quick Recap
Best Value

A practical checklist before subscribing
- Decide whether your priority is privacy, local performance, international routing, streaming, or support for multiple devices.
- Check the privacy policy, jurisdiction, and the scope and date of any independent audit; do not treat an audit as blanket proof.
- Look for dated tests on the specific routes and streaming platforms that matter to you.
- Verify device and connection limits, including any router or smart-TV requirements.
- Confirm the full amount due now, introductory term, renewal price, automatic-renewal conditions, taxes, and refund window on the provider’s Netherlands checkout page.
