No VPN can be counted on to unlock every streaming service or regional catalog. The best choice depends on the platform and country you care about, whether it supports your devices, and how reliably it performs in current tests. Netflix may change the catalog it shows when it detects a VPN, and it says VPNs are unsupported for live events and ad-supported viewing.
What a VPN can—and can’t—do for streaming
A VPN routes your connection through a server in another location, so a streaming service may see a different apparent location. That does not guarantee access to that location’s full catalog. Netflix says that when it detects a VPN, it may show only titles it licenses worldwide; turning off the VPN may be necessary to see titles available in your actual region. Catalog differences exist because streaming services license titles by territory and apply regional restrictions. A VPN connection is not a promise that a service will make a particular title available.

Netflix states: “VPNs aren’t supported for watching Live events on Netflix or if you’re on an ad-supported experience.” Its help guidance for an ad-supported plan says an E121 “There’s a problem” message can mean the viewer is likely connected through a VPN or proxy. See Netflix’s E121 guidance.

If Netflix reports that you seem to be using a VPN or proxy, its first suggested step is to turn off the VPN. If the warning persists, Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance includes resetting network settings and checking the country and IP address shown by Fast.com against the information for your home network. Follow the steps in Netflix’s VPN or proxy help page.
How to choose a VPN for your streaming use
Start with the exact service, country, and device you intend to use. A provider that works in one reviewer’s Netflix test may not work for another service or region, and results can change as streaming platforms block VPN IP addresses.

- Service and region: Look for current, attributed test results for the specific platform and country you care about. “Works with Netflix” is too broad to establish access to every Netflix catalog.
- Playback stability: Consider whether the connection can sustain the quality you watch, particularly for HD or 4K. Reviewer speed and playback observations describe their own test runs, not a guarantee for your internet connection.
- Device support: Confirm that the VPN has an app or a documented setup method for your television, streaming stick, phone, computer, or router.
- Household use: Check simultaneous connection limits if several people will stream on different devices.
- Cost and terms: Verify the current subscription price, renewal price, and refund terms with the provider before subscribing; prices and offers can change.
What recent comparison tests show
TechRadar’s streaming comparison covers Netflix, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Sling TV, HBO, and DAZN, with provider details such as device support, server countries, and connection limits. Its review reported that ExpressVPN failed to unblock Netflix in Australia and Japan in its test sample, while noting that platform results are close and can change. That is a dated test result, not a permanent compatibility verdict. Read its streaming VPN comparison for the test context.
In a separate Netflix-specific review published September 25, 2026, TechRadar reported different outcomes among tested providers across the United States, United Kingdom, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, and Japan. Top10VPN’s guide, updated September 4, 2026, assigns different picks by use case, including an overall streaming choice and separate recommendations for UK and Canadian platforms and mobile streaming. Those are that publisher’s rankings and methodology, not a consensus that one service is best for everyone. Its streaming VPN guide is another dated point of comparison.

Verify the exact device model and VPN app availability first. ExpressVPN’s support documentation lists its app for Fire TV and Fire Stick, Android TV devices, and Chromecast with Google TV. Where a VPN app is supported, use the streaming service’s official app on the device. A streaming stick such as an Amazon Fire TV Stick may be one way to run a compatible VPN app, but it is optional and does not guarantee that every VPN offers an app for it.

A practical way to make the decision
- Write down the streaming service, the country whose catalog you want, and the device you will watch on.
- Check current comparisons for that exact service and country, noting the publisher and test date rather than relying on a broad compatibility label.
- Confirm the VPN’s app or setup support for your device and check household connection limits.
- Review playback evidence alongside price, renewal terms, and refund conditions directly with the provider.
- If you subscribe, test the service on the intended device. If a VPN or proxy warning appears, use the streaming service’s official troubleshooting guidance; do not assume changing servers will restore access.
