The best VPN for Germany depends on what you need it to do: provide a German IP address while abroad, protect traffic on public Wi-Fi, or offer privacy and streaming features. Current comparisons by CHIP and TechRadar name several candidates, but their rankings reflect different tests and priorities. A VPN can secure the connection to its server; it cannot make you completely anonymous or guarantee access to a streaming service.

Which Germany VPN fits your use?

Start with the job you need done, then compare providers on the features that matter for it. A German server location is essential if you need a German IP address while traveling, but it does not guarantee that a streaming platform will work. If your priority is public Wi-Fi, look closely at connection protection and the app’s kill switch. For privacy, examine the provider’s policy and the scope and date of any independent audit rather than treating a ranking as proof.

Need What to check What the available comparisons report
German IP while abroad German server locations and whether the plan you choose includes them TechRadar reports German locations for several paid services, including NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, and PIA. Its reviewed Proton VPN free plan had no German server location.
German streaming while traveling Recent tests of the exact service you use; access can change TechRadar reports favorable results for NordVPN on tested German services and access to some German platforms with ExpressVPN. These are reviewer observations, not guarantees.
Public Wi-Fi protection App security features, especially a kill switch, and clear connection behavior The reviewed comparisons assess features and usability, but do not establish that every candidate behaves identically on every device or network.
Privacy features Privacy policy, audit scope and date, and how the provider handles account and payment information CHIP and TechRadar include privacy in their evaluations, but their rankings do not replace reviewing a provider’s underlying evidence.

To compare speed, use tests performed under similar conditions. The publications’ reported results should not be treated as a direct head-to-head speed ranking when their methods differ.

What the 2026 comparisons say about the candidates

CHIP Testcenter says it tested nine VPN services on security, privacy, ease of use, features, and speed. It first published its results in June 2026, with the article dated July 16, 2026. TechRadar published its Germany-focused comparison on February 6, 2026. Their recommendations overlap, but each outlet applies its own testing and weighting.

Service Reported editorial angle Germany-related detail and qualification
NordVPN CHIP names it its test winner; TechRadar recommends it overall. TechRadar describes Berlin, Frankfurt, and Hamburg locations and favorable results on the German streaming services it tested. Availability and streaming access can change; renewal pricing may differ from the initial offer.
Proton VPN Both publications include it; TechRadar emphasizes privacy and discusses its free offering. TechRadar reports German locations on paid plans. In the reviewed free plan, it found no German server and no manual location selection, so that plan did not provide a German IP in the reviewer’s account.
ExpressVPN Both publications include it; TechRadar emphasizes ease of use. TechRadar reports Frankfurt and Nuremberg locations and successful access to some German platforms in its tests. These observations and displayed prices are subject to change.
Mullvad CHIP names it among its recommendations. The cited CHIP material supports its inclusion in the test, but does not establish Germany-specific city coverage, streaming performance, price, or program availability.
Private Internet Access (PIA) TechRadar includes it as a budget and customization option. TechRadar reports Frankfurt and Berlin options and describes split tunneling and multi-hop. Its findings are reviewer observations; check current pricing and performance.

Prices require particular care: CHIP gives an approximate annual cost range of €35–€100 in its 2026 article, not a universal market statistic. TechRadar’s February 6, 2026 comparison lists example prices in US dollars, including NordVPN from $3.09 per month in its summary. Those are volatile examples, not Germany-specific euro quotes or assurances of renewal cost. Compare the full subscription term, total amount due, renewal price, and cancellation terms on the provider’s current checkout page.

What a VPN does—and what it does not

The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) describes a VPN client as establishing a cryptographically secured data transmission between a local user and a trusted remote user or network over a potentially insecure network. Its VPN-client profile, version 3.0, dated July 26, 2024, is specifically framed around securely transmitting information classified VS-NfD (“For Official Use Only”); it is not a blanket endorsement of consumer VPNs. Read the BSI VPN-client profile.

In consumer use, a VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN endpoint and makes websites see the endpoint’s IP address rather than your ordinary connection IP. That shifts trust from the local network or internet provider to the VPN provider for that part of the connection. It does not conceal everything: account logins, payment details, browser tracking, device security, and information you share with a destination service can still identify or track you. “Anonymous” is therefore not an absolute technical outcome.

Is using a VPN in Germany legal?

The cited official material does not establish a comprehensive legal conclusion about all consumer VPN use in Germany. A BSI security profile is not a consumer-use ruling. Separately, the German Federal Government announced on April 22, 2026 that the cabinet had approved a draft requiring internet access providers to retain IP addresses for three months. That announcement describes a draft, not proof that the measure subsequently became law. See the Federal Government’s announcement.

How to choose and check a subscription

  1. Define the location you need. If you need a German IP while abroad, confirm that the specific plan offers German servers. If you need only a secure connection on public Wi-Fi, German coverage may be less important than the app’s protection features.
  2. Verify the feature that matters. For streaming, look for recent results for your exact service; for privacy, inspect policy and audit scope and date; for usability, check app support and kill-switch behavior on your devices.
  3. Compare cost over the full term. Check the upfront total, subscription length, renewal amount, and cancellation terms rather than relying on a monthly headline price.
  4. Confirm current details before paying. Server cities, free-plan limits, streaming compatibility, and prices can change. Recheck them on the provider’s current plan information and checkout pages.
