For most Chromebook owners, an Android VPN app is the better fit when the goal is to protect traffic from multiple apps; a Chrome extension is mainly for browser traffic, while a built-in VPN profile is useful when you already have compatible connection details. Which option works depends on your Chromebook’s Android-app support and any school or workplace restrictions. No single provider is best for every setup, and the available provider rankings and test results below belong to the named publishers—not to iTechGuides.

What is the best VPN for a Chromebook?

Start with the coverage you need, then check compatibility. Google documents three ways to use a VPN on ChromeOS: configure a supported VPN profile, install a Chrome Web Store app or extension, or install an Android VPN app through Google Play on a compatible Chromebook. These options do not necessarily protect the same traffic.

  • Choose an Android app if you want a provider app that can cover Chrome and Android apps through a full tunnel, subject to the app and device configuration.
  • Choose a Chrome extension if browser-focused protection meets your needs. Do not assume it protects Android apps or all device traffic.
  • Use a built-in profile or VPN client if you have configuration details for a compatible personal, school, or work VPN. A client does not itself provide a consumer VPN subscription.

Google explains VPN profiles, Android apps, full tunnels, split tunneling, and connection blocking in its Chromebook VPN setup guide. Provider features and current availability can change; check the provider’s own documentation and subscription terms before choosing.

How Chromebook VPN options differ

Android VPN apps

On a Chromebook that supports Android apps and has Google Play access, an Android VPN app can be the most practical route to broader coverage. Google says full-tunnel VPNs typically route traffic from Chrome windows, Chrome apps, and Android apps. Split tunneling can send selected traffic through the VPN while other traffic uses the Chromebook’s regular network. Whether an app offers these controls, and how it applies them, varies by provider.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Google also documents an always-on setting for Android VPN apps and a “Block connections without VPN” option. These settings are relevant if you want to reduce the chance that traffic uses a direct connection when the VPN is unavailable, but availability and behavior depend on the device and configuration. Check the settings available on your Chromebook rather than assuming every VPN app supports the same protections.

Chrome extensions

A Chrome extension is generally a browser-level option, not a guarantee of whole-device protection. It may suit someone who mainly wants to route browser activity through a VPN, but it should not be treated as equivalent to a system VPN app without confirming exactly what it covers. Also check whether the extension can work on its own or requires a separate app.

Built-in VPN profiles and OpenVPN Connect

ChromeOS can use supported VPN profiles entered in network settings. This route makes sense when an organization or VPN administrator has provided the server and authentication details; it is not a substitute for signing up with a retail VPN provider.

OpenVPN Connect is another client option for compatible OpenVPN endpoints. OpenVPN says its Android app supports ChromeOS and can connect to OpenVPN servers, Access Server, and CloudConnexa networks. It is relevant when you already have access to one of those deployments, not as a VPN service subscription by itself. See OpenVPN Connect for ChromeOS.

Chromebook compatibility: check these points first

Confirm Play Store and Android-app support

Android VPN apps require a Chromebook that supports Android apps and provides Google Play access. Google directs users to device-specific support information; the exact situation depends on the model and its software state. A provider’s setup guide may impose the same requirement. For example, ExpressVPN’s Chromebook instructions require Android-app support.

Account for older devices and updates

ExpressVPN warns that some older Chromebook models affected by extended security updates may no longer have Play Store access, preventing installation of its Chromebook Android app. Do not casually change a device’s security or update state to try to restore access: the provider’s guide warns that doing so can have security consequences. Check Google’s device guidance and the VPN provider’s current instructions before making system changes.

Respect school and workplace management

An administrator may control VPN installation, Play Store access, and Chrome extensions on a managed Chromebook. Google advises users with organizational VPN problems to contact their administrator and documents administrator-managed VPN app installation. If an app or extension is unavailable, ask the school or employer’s IT team what is permitted; do not try to bypass its controls. Gizmodo likewise notes that management policies may block the Play Store, extensions, or both.

What current Chromebook VPN comparisons report

Gizmodo’s September 15, 2026 comparison, titled “Best VPN for Chromebook in 2026: 5 Tested on ChromeOS,” names NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost among its candidates. Its article also names another provider, which is omitted here. These are publisher-selected options, not an independently verified ranking by iTechGuides. Gizmodo characterizes NordVPN as its overall pick, Proton VPN as a feature-rich extension option, ExpressVPN as a simple Android app, and CyberGhost as a lower-price option with a free extension. Treat those as Gizmodo’s judgments, not universal recommendations.

Gizmodo reports that its five tested Chrome extensions did not leak an IP address through WebRTC and did not include kill switches, while the Android apps it tested did include kill switches. Its extension ad-blocking results and monthly prices are publisher-reported figures, not market-wide or guaranteed current values:

How to evaluate a Chromebook VPN beyond rankings

A label such as “best” is less useful than checking whether the service fits your device and risk requirements. Compare the following before installing or paying:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Coverage: Does the option protect only browser traffic, or can the app route Chrome and Android app traffic? Is split tunneling available if you need selected apps to bypass the VPN?
  • Compatibility: Does your Chromebook support Android apps and Google Play, and does its administrator allow installation?
  • Interruption behavior: Is there an app kill switch, an always-on setting, or a system “Block connections without VPN” option? Confirm which layer provides the protection and what happens when the connection drops.
  • Leak safeguards: Look for clear information on DNS, WebRTC, and IPv6 leak protection, and distinguish provider claims from independently described test results.
  • Privacy evidence: Review the privacy policy and look for independent audit information. An audit’s scope and date matter; do not infer that a privacy policy has been independently validated merely because a provider mentions an audit.
  • Performance and locations: Prefer comparisons that disclose test dates, locations, server selection, and method. Speed results from one publisher’s setup are not a promise of the same performance on your connection.
  • Price terms: Check the plan, billing period, introductory offer, renewal rate, device limit, and refund terms on the provider’s checkout page.

Security.org describes an evaluation approach that includes purchasing and installing services as a regular user, measuring speeds across dozens of servers, checking DNS, WebRTC, and IPv6 leaks, interrupting connections to examine kill switches, reviewing privacy policies and third-party audits, and checking streaming access. That methodology is useful context for judging comparison articles; it does not establish that every provider discussed here was tested by Security.org. See Security.org’s Chromebook VPN guide.

Provider details to verify before installing

Proton VPN

Proton’s Chromebook page instructs users with Android-app support and Google Play to install its app and sign in. The provider advertises free and paid account options, plus features including a kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, and split tunneling. It says paid accounts support up to 10 devices and describes a network of more than 20,000 servers in over 140 countries. These are provider-published claims from a page accessed October 7, 2026; verify current features, limits, and availability on Proton’s Chromebook download page. A free option does not remove the need to check its current plan limits and whether it meets your needs.

ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN’s Chromebook guide, last updated September 3, 2026, describes installing the Android app from Google Play, signing in, and connecting; it says Smart Location suggests a location. The guide lists simultaneous-device limits of 10 for Basic, 12 for Advanced, and 14 for Pro. These are guide-specific plan details and may change, so check the current subscription page and terms. The setup also requires Android-app support. Read ExpressVPN’s Chromebook setup guide.

How to set up a VPN on a Chromebook

The steps depend on whether you are configuring a profile, installing an extension, or using an Android app. For the Android-app route, first confirm that your device supports Google Play and that installation is allowed.

  1. Check device support: Confirm Android-app and Play Store availability for your Chromebook. On a school or work device, ask the administrator if installation is blocked or restricted.
  2. Install the app: Open Google Play, find the VPN provider’s official app, and install it. Follow the provider’s current Chromebook instructions; for example, Proton’s guide describes installing the app and signing in.
  3. Sign in and connect: Open the VPN app, sign in, and choose a location or connection option. Review app permissions and the provider’s privacy information.
  4. Review protection settings: Check for available kill-switch or connection-blocking controls, always-on behavior, and split tunneling. In ChromeOS, Google documents the Android VPN always-on and “Block connections without VPN” options for supported configurations.
  5. Verify the result: Confirm the app shows an active connection. If you need to verify leak protection or traffic coverage, use a suitable independent test and check which traffic it measures; a browser-only check does not establish that every app is routed through the VPN.

For a supported built-in profile or a Chrome extension, use Google’s instructions and the configuration details supplied by the VPN or network administrator. Managed-device policies may prevent either route.

Can you use a VPN on a school Chromebook?

Possibly, if the school allows it and the device supports the required VPN route. A school administrator may disable Play Store access, extensions, or VPN configuration. Contact the school’s IT administrator if installation is unavailable or the connection fails. Google’s guidance for organizational VPN issues is to contact the administrator; it also documents managed VPN app installation.

Is there a free VPN for Chromebook?

Proton VPN advertises free and paid account options, but the existence of a free plan does not establish that it has the same limits or features as a paid plan. Check the provider’s current plan page for any usage, location, speed, or feature restrictions, and confirm that the Android app or extension you intend to use is compatible with your Chromebook.
