For a French IP address, choose a VPN that currently offers an exit server in France, then select that location in its app before connecting. Websites will generally see the VPN server’s public IP instead of the IP from your normal connection. The evidence-backed options here are ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Proton VPN; the available information does not support a reliable five-provider ranking.
What a French VPN connection does
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a VPN server. When that server is in France, websites generally see its public IP address rather than the IP address assigned to your usual connection. France’s public digital education resource, the ANCT, explains: “The sites you visit see the VPN server’s IP address, not yours.” ANCT
This changes the apparent network location; it does not erase your identity. If you sign in to an account, the service can still associate activity with that account. A VPN also does not replace antivirus software or stop phishing: entering credentials on a fake site can still expose them.

ExpressVPN: reviewer’s top pick for France
Top10VPN’s August 10, 2026 review names ExpressVPN its best choice for France and reports testing French platforms. Separately, ExpressVPN advertises two Paris VPN locations and IP and DNS leak protection. The city and feature details are vendor claims; the platform results and ranking belong to the reviewer. Neither establishes that streaming access will work for every service, device or account today. Top10VPN’s France guide · ExpressVPN’s France page
NordVPN: a broad set of advertised French locations
NordVPN reports more than 300 servers in France across four locations and names Paris, Marseille and Strasbourg. These are vendor-reported, changeable figures, not independent measurements. NordVPN also advertises a 30-day refund guarantee; check its current terms before purchasing. NordVPN’s France server page

- For a French exit IP: Confirm that France is available as a location in the provider’s current app or plan before subscribing. Server availability and locations can change.
- For French streaming services: Treat compatibility as temporary. Streaming platforms can block VPN IP addresses, and a reviewer’s successful test on one date does not guarantee access later or on your device. Check the service’s terms as well as the VPN’s current location list. Top10VPN’s France guide · TechRadar’s France VPN coverage
- For privacy: Separate vendor claims from independent assessments, and remember that a VPN does not conceal account activity from a service where you are signed in.
- For speed: Do not treat advertised server capacity as your likely connection speed. The cited material does not establish a standardized, independent speed comparison across these providers.
- For devices and simultaneous connections: Verify support for your operating systems and the number of devices allowed under the specific plan before checkout; the available details do not establish a comparable limit across providers.
Is a free VPN enough for a French IP?
It depends on whether the free plan includes a French exit location and whether its limits suit your use. Top10VPN reports Windscribe’s free option has a 10 GB monthly allowance. Clubic reports Proton VPN Free includes unlimited data but no French IP on that tier. These are reviewer-reported plan details that can change, so confirm the live plan terms and French location availability before relying on either. How to connect to France from abroad
- Check the location: Confirm that France is listed in the provider’s current app and included with the plan you intend to use.
- Install and sign in: Set up the provider’s app on your device, then sign in to your subscription.
- Select France: Choose a French server or city in the location list and connect.
- Check the result: Use an IP-location lookup to confirm the public IP is identified as French. Location databases can be imperfect, so a mismatch does not always mean the VPN connection failed.
- Test the service you need: Open the relevant website or app. A French IP does not guarantee access to a particular service, and signing in still identifies your account.
Legal and service limits
The ANCT’s public-interest guide discusses VPN use in France as a lawful tool, but this article does not assess French legislation or give legal advice about bypassing geographic restrictions or copyright limits. Streaming access may be affected by a service’s terms and can change as platforms respond to VPN traffic. ANCT · Top10VPN’s France guide
