Use the vocation you can control reliably; choose Thief if you want the clearest damage-focused option. Skull Splitter is repeatedly recommended for heavy damage, while Warfarer suits players who can manage vocation swapping and want healing, ranged, and close-range tools. Bring a healing Mage, a Fighter or Warrior with taunt skills, and a second damage dealer. A Sorcerer with Maelstrom and High Frigor is particularly useful when Ghouls appear.

The complete Fallen Dragon battle happens during Reunion at the Summit Ritual Grounds. The earlier appearance at Mountain Stronghold ends in a scene, so do not treat it as the boss kill. Prepare before the Reunion sequence, then attack exposed flesh one weak spot at a time while controlling the summoned Ghouls.

What the “Fallen Dragon fight” actually refers to

There are two moments that can be confused. The Fallen Dragon appears earlier at Mountain Stronghold, but that encounter ends in a scene rather than the full, decisive battle. The extended boss encounter takes place during Reunion at the Summit Ritual Grounds. Your party, equipment, healing stock, and revival items should be ready before you commit to the sequence leading to the elevator section.

This distinction matters because changing your plan after the Mountain Stronghold scene can leave you underprepared for the Summit Ritual Grounds. Treat Reunion as the point of no casual preparation: rest first, refill healing supplies, carry Wakestones, and confirm every Pawn’s vocation and equipment before moving on.

Best overall setup at a glance

Job Recommended choice Why it fits the encounter
Arisen vocation Thief Skull Splitter provides a direct, repeatable heavy-damage option when you can stay on exposed flesh.
Flexible alternative Warfarer Useful if you can manage vocation swapping and want healing, ranged, and close-range tools in one build.
Primary support Pawn Mage Provides sustained healing so the party can recover between weak-point pushes and Ghoul interruptions.
Attention-control Pawn Fighter or Warrior Taunt skills help draw pressure away from the Mage and damage dealers.
Second damage Pawn Sorcerer, Archer, or another reliable damage dealer Long-range pressure and area damage help reach elevated body sections and clear Ghouls.

A balanced party is more forgiving than four damage-focused characters. Pure damage can shorten an opening, but it becomes fragile when Ghouls divide the group or a major magical attack forces everyone away from the target. The practical goal is not the highest theoretical burst; it is enough damage to break weak spots without losing healing, attention control, reach, or recovery.

Prepare before entering the Summit Ritual Grounds

Rest and refill

Rest before starting Reunion so the party begins the sequence in a stable condition. Refill healing supplies rather than assuming the previous encounter left enough consumables for the full battle. The fight can include pauses for Ghoul waves, repositioning, and revivals, so a party that enters with only a small reserve has less margin for error.

Carry Wakestones

Bring Wakestones for emergency revivals. A Pawn who falls while Ghouls are active may be difficult to reach safely, and losing the healer can turn a recoverable mistake into a wipe. Wakestones are insurance for the moments when reviving normally would require crossing an exposed section of the arena.

Check equipment and roles

Confirm that each Pawn still performs the job you expect. The Mage should be equipped and configured as the party’s healing anchor. The Fighter or Warrior should have a way to attract attention with taunt skills. Your damage dealer should have a reliable way to reach both lower and elevated sections of the dragon. If you are using Warfarer, verify the vocation-swapping tools you intend to use before the elevator section rather than experimenting during the boss fight.

Choose a clear control plan

Decide in advance who handles Ghouls. A Sorcerer carrying Maelstrom and High Frigor is a practical add-clearing option, but the rest of the party still needs to recognize when boss damage should stop. If the Ghouls are pressuring the healer or splitting the group, the priority becomes restoring control, not forcing another hit on the dragon.

Choosing the Arisen’s vocation

Thief: the clearest damage-first choice

Thief is the strongest straightforward recommendation when your priority is damaging exposed flesh quickly. Skull Splitter is repeatedly recommended for heavy damage, making it a natural centerpiece for a weak-point-focused plan. The vocation works best when you can stay oriented on the current exposed section instead of chasing every movement the dragon makes.

Use Thief with discipline: select one reachable arm or foreleg, remain on that target while it is exposed, and move only when the dragon’s position or a major attack makes the location unsafe. Switching targets constantly wastes the opening you created. When the first section breaks, move to the next accessible weak spot rather than scattering attacks across several intact areas.

Warfarer: flexibility for experienced players

Warfarer is useful when you can manage vocation swapping without losing track of the encounter. Its appeal is access to healing, ranged, and close-range tools, allowing one character to answer more situations. You can respond to a high target with ranged pressure, return to close-range attacks when the dragon lowers a limb, and provide utility when the party is under pressure.

The trade-off is execution. Warfarer’s flexibility does not help if swapping delays a needed heal, leaves you away from the active weak spot, or causes you to ignore Ghouls. Choose it because you already handle the controls reliably, not because it appears to offer every option on paper.

Other vocations: reliability beats a theoretical tier list

The most important rule is to use the vocation you can pilot reliably. No authoritative damage multipliers, boss-health values, or mandatory vocation are established here. A familiar vocation that keeps you alive, reaches the target, and lets you respond to Ghouls is more valuable than an unfamiliar one selected solely for a claimed ranking.

Whatever you choose, build around the encounter’s four practical demands: sustained healing, attention control, enough reach or mobility for high and low body sections, and area damage for Ghoul waves.

How to assemble the Pawn party

Healing Mage

A Mage gives the party a recovery point between attacks. Keep the Mage protected rather than treating it as another source of disposable damage. When the dragon’s magic or Ghouls force a retreat, the Mage’s ability to restore health is what lets the group resume the next weak-point push without spending every consumable.

Fighter or Warrior with taunt skills

A Fighter or Warrior can draw attention with taunt skills, creating room for the Mage and damage dealers. The goal is not to make the front-line Pawn absorb every attack indefinitely. It is to give the party a controllable focus: while the dragon and Ghouls are paying attention to the durable Pawn, the rest of the group can attack exposed flesh or clear adds.

Damage dealer with reach or area coverage

Use a Sorcerer, Archer, or another damage Pawn that can contribute when the dragon’s limbs, head, or wings are not safely reachable from the ground. Long-range Pawns can keep contributing while the party avoids a dangerous area. A Sorcerer equipped with Maelstrom and High Frigor also gives the group a practical answer to Ghoul waves.

Why long-range Pawns can improve survival

Guide writer Dave Aubrey describes the fight as one of the biggest challenges in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen and observes that “having a party of long-range pawns – like Mages, Sorcerers, and Archers – will keep the team alive for a bit longer.” That is a guide-writer observation, not a developer guarantee, but it explains why a party with reach can be more consistent than one that must stand beneath the dragon for every hit.

Weak spots and the target order

Attack exposed, unscaled flesh

The target is the dragon’s exposed, unscaled flesh. Do not distribute damage randomly across the body. Work one exposed weak spot until it breaks. The recommended starting points are reachable arms or forelegs, because they are easier to engage without committing the entire party to an unsafe position.

Move upward as positioning allows

After an accessible lower section breaks, move to the head and wings when the dragon’s position gives you a safe route. The exact order can change with the dragon’s movement and your vocation’s reach. The important rule is to finish the section you can actually attack, then select the next exposed area that your party can reach without walking into a major attack.

Do not confuse visibility with safety

A head or wing may be visible while still being a poor target if reaching it strands the healer or separates the party. Let ranged Pawns work on elevated sections when possible. Melee characters should use openings that leave them a clear path back to the group.

Step-by-step combat loop

  1. Establish positions. Let the Fighter or Warrior attract attention while the Mage stays far enough from the immediate pressure to heal. Place the damage dealers where they can see the current weak spot without all standing in one attack lane.
  2. Choose one reachable section. Start with an exposed arm or foreleg when one is available. Tell yourself which section is the current target so the party does not waste its opening by striking several parts at once.
  3. Commit damage until the section breaks. Use Skull Splitter repeatedly if you are a Thief and can maintain a safe position. Warfarer users should choose the tool that reaches the current section instead of swapping simply to use a different option.
  4. Watch for the Ghoul summons. The moment Ghouls begin pressuring the healer or splitting the party, pause boss damage. Let the Sorcerer apply Maelstrom or High Frigor and have the rest of the group remove the immediate threat.
  5. Use terrain for major magic. When the dragon signals a major magical attack, move behind the large rocks around the arena. The rocks are cover; do not remain in the open trying to finish a weak-point animation.
  6. Recover the party. Revive fallen Pawns and restore health before beginning the next weak-point push. A partially healed party entering another damage window is more likely to lose the Mage or split under pressure.
  7. Reacquire the next exposed target. Return to an arm or foreleg if it remains the safest option, then work toward the head and wings as positioning permits. Repeat the cycle instead of treating every opening as a race to the final section.

Handling Ghouls without losing the fight

When to stop attacking the dragon

Ghouls are not a minor distraction if they are hitting the healer, occupying the front line, or forcing Pawns into separate parts of the arena. Continuing to attack the dragon while the party is being divided often creates a worse opening later. Stop boss damage when the adds threaten party control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assign the clearing job

Give the Sorcerer the area-clear responsibility when your setup includes Maelstrom and High Frigor. Other Pawns should protect the Mage, keep the Ghouls from reaching the healer, and finish isolated enemies that survive the first spell. The Arisen can help, but should not abandon the party’s position merely to chase a distant Ghoul.

Return to the boss deliberately

After the Ghouls are under control, do not immediately sprint toward the dragon’s most visible body part. Check whether the Mage is safe, whether a Pawn needs reviving, and whether the dragon is beginning a magical attack. Resume the weak-point plan only after the party has a stable formation.

Magic attacks, rocks, and arena movement

The large rocks around the arena are an important defensive resource. Use them as cover when the dragon signals a major magic attack rather than relying on healing to erase the damage afterward. Cover also gives the Mage a moment to restore the party and lets Pawns regroup after a forced movement.

Do not let terrain use become another source of separation. Move toward the same rock or nearby cover as the group, keep the Mage within a practical healing distance, and avoid leading the dragon so far away that the ranged Pawns lose their line of attack. Once the attack passes, re-establish the target and formation before committing to damage.

Balanced and specialized party options

Party style Strength Weakness Best use
Role-balanced Healing, attention control, reach, and add management are all represented. Less burst than a group built entirely for damage. Recommended for a first or inconsistent clear.
Damage-heavy Can shorten a favorable weak-point opening. Less forgiving when Ghouls or magic attacks interrupt the group. Experienced players who already manage recovery and add control.
Long-range leaning Can keep contributing while avoiding dangerous close-range positions. May struggle if no Pawn can hold attention or protect the healer. Players who prefer distance and safer repositioning.
Warfarer-centered One Arisen can answer healing, ranged, and close-range situations. Requires confident vocation swapping and awareness. Players comfortable changing tools without losing the encounter’s priorities.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake: treating Mountain Stronghold as the full kill

Correction: The complete encounter is during Reunion at the Summit Ritual Grounds. Prepare for that sequence even if the earlier appearance seemed conclusive.

Mistake: entering the elevator section without supplies

Correction: Rest, refill healing items, carry Wakestones, and confirm party equipment before committing.

Mistake: spreading attacks across the whole body

Correction: Select one exposed section, usually an arm or foreleg, and continue until it breaks. Move toward the head and wings only when the party can reach them safely.

Mistake: ignoring Ghouls to preserve boss damage

Correction: If Ghouls pressure the healer or split the party, clear them first. A short pause prevents a longer recovery or a lost Pawn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: standing in the open for a finishing hit

Correction: Use the arena’s large rocks when a major magical attack is signaled. Surviving the attack preserves the next damage window.

Mistake: reviving one Pawn while the rest of the party collapses

Correction: Stabilize the area, use cover where appropriate, revive Pawns, and restore health before starting another weak-point push.

Mistake: selecting a vocation you cannot pilot

Correction: Thief is the clearest damage-first recommendation and Warfarer is the flexible option, but reliability is more important than a theoretical ranking. Use the vocation whose movement, targeting, and defensive responses you already understand.

A practical default build

For a dependable first attempt, use Thief as the Arisen, a healing Mage, a Fighter or Warrior with taunt skills, and a Sorcerer carrying Maelstrom and High Frigor. Open on an exposed arm or foreleg and use Skull Splitter when the section is safe to reach. Let the front-line Pawn draw attention, keep the Mage protected, and have the Sorcerer clear Ghouls when they threaten the formation. Use the rocks for major magic attacks, then revive and heal before returning to the next weak spot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If that arrangement leaves you uncomfortable at close range, replace the Arisen’s Thief role with Warfarer only if you already manage its vocation swapping confidently. The Pawn jobs remain the same: healing, attention control, and damage with enough reach or area coverage to handle the dragon’s changing position.

Access and edition note

The Dark Arisen content requires the Dragon’s Dogma 2 base game. Availability and edition names can differ by platform and region, so verify the version you own before planning a Reunion run.
