For most people, start by comparing UTM and Parallels Desktop. UTM gives you a QEMU-based Mac app with separate emulation and Apple virtualization paths; Parallels Desktop emphasizes a polished commercial setup with ready-to-use Linux distributions. Developers building their own tooling should look at Apple’s Virtualization framework. VMware Fusion can be considered only after checking its current release, because the documented Fusion evidence is for version 13.5.1 from February 27, 2024.
Quick verdict: which app fits your Linux VM project?
There is no defensible universal speed winner here. No comparable benchmark covering the same Apple Silicon Mac, macOS release, Linux image, memory allocation and workload was available, so the useful decision is based on workflow, architecture support, controls and currency of the documentation.
| Option | Best fit | What is established | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| UTM | People who want a flexible Mac application and may need either virtualization or emulation | UTM describes itself as a QEMU-based system emulator and virtual-machine host for macOS and iOS. Its documentation separates QEMU settings from Apple virtualization settings. | The available home page does not provide a complete, current feature or performance matrix. Confirm the app release and selected mode before planning a workload. |
| Parallels Desktop | Users who value a guided commercial desktop experience | The product page advertises ready-to-use Linux distributions. Its editions distinguish Standard and Pro, with Pro aimed at developers and people running multiple virtual machines. | It is paid software. Check the purchase page for current pricing, licensing and Apple Silicon resource limits; do not rely on older comparison panels. |
| VMware Fusion | Existing VMware users or readers evaluating another established hypervisor | Fusion 13.5.1 release notes dated February 27, 2024 describe support for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs and for x86 and ARM operating systems. | That is release-specific 2024 evidence, not proof of compatibility with an October 2026 Mac or macOS installation. Verify a current release and guest matrix first. |
| Apple Virtualization framework | Developers creating a custom VM workflow or embedding virtualization in software | Apple supplies APIs for configuring and managing Linux virtual machines and VIRTIO devices, plus sample projects for Linux and graphical Linux guests. | This is a developer framework rather than a ready-made consumer desktop application. |
Start with the architecture, not the app name
Use an ARM64 Linux guest on an Apple Silicon Mac
Apple Silicon Macs use ARM processors, so the normal guest image is a 64-bit ARM build. Distribution download pages may label it arm64 or aarch64. Apple’s examples include Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu, and its guidance is to choose an image matching the host CPU architecture.
An Intel Mac normally uses an image labeled x86_64 or amd64. Those labels describe the guest architecture, not the brand of the Mac. Selecting an Intel ISO for an Apple Silicon virtual machine can lead to a failed boot, an unavailable installer or a much slower emulation path, depending on the product and configuration.

Separate an Intel application from an Intel operating system
These are different requirements:
- ARM Linux guest: Linux itself runs as an ARM operating system, while a translation layer may run some Intel Linux binaries inside it.
- Intel Linux guest: The entire operating system is built for Intel processors and must be booted or emulated as such.
Apple documents translation for Intel binaries running inside an ARM Linux virtual machine. It also explicitly says that its Virtualization framework does not bootstrap or install Intel Linux distributions on Apple Silicon. In other words, translation support does not turn an Intel ISO into a natively supported guest. If a project requires an Intel-only kernel module, boot process or operating-system image, confirm that the chosen app supports CPU emulation before downloading the guest.
UTM: the flexible choice when you need two virtualization paths
What UTM provides
UTM is built around QEMU and presents itself as both a system emulator and a virtual-machine host for macOS and iOS. Its documentation distinguishes QEMU configuration from Apple virtualization configuration. That distinction matters: you are not choosing between two cosmetic interfaces, but between different ways of running the guest.
Apple virtualization is the natural path to investigate for an ARM64 Linux guest when the guest and devices are compatible. QEMU’s emulation path is the option to examine when you need a different architecture or a device model that is unavailable through the Apple path. The source material does not establish that both paths deliver identical performance or feature coverage, so treat them as separate configurations.

When UTM is the better first download
- You want one Mac application that exposes both Apple virtualization and QEMU-oriented settings.
- You are comfortable choosing guest architecture and VM mode rather than relying entirely on an automated installer.
- You may need to investigate emulation for an Intel-specific experiment instead of assuming ARM virtualization will handle it.
- You want to inspect and adjust the VM configuration directly.
UTM setup decisions
Before creating the VM, decide whether the guest is ARM64 Linux or an Intel operating system that requires emulation. Then consult UTM’s current documentation for the exact settings exposed by the release you install. Do not copy a QEMU tutorial into an Apple virtualization VM, or assume that a setting shown in one mode exists in the other.
Parallels Desktop: the convenience-oriented commercial option
What the product information supports
Parallels Desktop’s product page describes downloading ready-to-use Linux distributions, which can reduce the number of installer and boot decisions for a desktop user. The page also separates Standard and Pro editions. Pro is positioned for developers and users running multiple virtual machines.
Those are vendor product descriptions, not independent performance measurements. They support a convenience and workflow recommendation, not a claim that Parallels is faster than UTM or any other option on your Mac.

Who should consider Pro
Choose the Pro tier only when its current documentation matches your workload—for example, regular development work involving several VMs or the additional developer controls listed for the edition. Do not infer CPU, memory or VM-count limits from an older comparison panel: the visible product information is not fully consistent across sections, and the current purchase documentation should be the authority.
Questions to answer before paying
- Is the edition licensed for the number of Macs and users you have?
- Does the current release support your installed macOS version and Apple Silicon model?
- Which ARM64 Linux distributions can the current automated download flow install?
- What resource limits apply to Standard and Pro today?
- Can you export or move the resulting VM if you later change hypervisors?
These checks are more reliable than treating a paid tier as an automatic performance upgrade.
VMware Fusion: include it only after a currency check
The official evidence available for Fusion is the release note for Fusion 13.5.1, dated February 27, 2024. It states support for Macs with Intel or Apple Silicon and discusses x86 and ARM operating systems. That makes Fusion a reasonable candidate for someone already invested in VMware workflows, but it does not establish what is supported in 2026.
Before installing, verify all of the following in current VMware documentation:
- The latest Fusion version and whether it is still offered for your region.
- Support for the macOS version currently installed on your Mac.
- Whether the desired Linux guest is ARM64, x86_64 or expected to run through emulation.
- Any licensing, download or feature changes since 13.5.1.
Do not present Fusion as a current recommendation solely because an older release note mentioned Apple Silicon.
Apple’s Virtualization framework: the developer route
What the framework is
Apple’s Virtualization framework is an API for creating and managing virtual machines. Apple documents configuration of processors, memory, boot loaders, storage, networking and other devices through VZVirtualMachineConfiguration. It also documents VIRTIO devices and provides sample projects for Linux and graphical Linux guests.

What a GUI Linux sample demonstrates
Apple’s GUI sample installs from an ARM Linux ISO on Apple Silicon. This is useful as a reference implementation: it shows the architecture and device assumptions for a graphical Linux guest without requiring a commercial VM application. It is not the same as downloading a finished desktop hypervisor.
When to choose it
- You are writing macOS software that must create, configure or control Linux VMs.
- You need programmatic control over VM lifecycle and virtual devices.
- You can handle code signing, entitlements, storage management and guest installation yourself.
If your goal is simply to open a Linux desktop for development or testing, a finished app is usually the shorter path. Use the framework when the API is part of the product or workflow you are building.
A practical selection framework
Score each candidate against the requirements that can block the project. A product that fails one of the first three checks is not rescued by a convenient installer.

Step-by-step: creating an ARM64 Linux desktop VM
1. Confirm the host and guest
Open Apple menu → About This Mac and note the chip and macOS version. On the Linux distribution’s download page, select the ARM64, ARM 64-bit or AArch64 installer. Keep the ISO’s checksum information if the distribution publishes it.
2. Choose the VM application and mode
Install the current release of UTM, Parallels Desktop or another verified option. In UTM, explicitly identify whether the new VM is using Apple virtualization or a QEMU configuration. In a commercial app, read the guest-architecture label in the creation wizard rather than accepting an Intel default.
3. Create the virtual hardware
Assign virtual processors, memory, storage, networking and a boot device according to the app’s current guidance and your Mac’s capacity. Apple’s framework documentation names these same categories because they are fundamental to a working VM. Leave enough resources for macOS; allocating nearly all host memory can make both systems unresponsive.

4. Attach the ARM64 ISO
Select the downloaded Linux ISO as the virtual optical or installation device and place it before the empty virtual disk in the boot order when the app requires that setting.

5. Install Linux
Start the VM and complete the distribution installer. If it reports an architecture mismatch, stop and verify that the ISO is marked arm64 or aarch64. Do not keep retrying the same Intel image.
6. Install guest integration components when supported
Use only integration tools documented for your app and Linux distribution. Display resizing, clipboard sharing, folder sharing and time synchronization are application- and guest-specific; enable them one at a time so a problem can be isolated.
7. Update and make a clean recovery copy
After the first successful boot, update Linux through its normal package manager, shut it down cleanly and create whatever snapshot, clone or export mechanism the current app documents. Keep the original installer and record the VM’s architecture and mode.

If the requirement is an Intel application rather than an Intel operating system, begin with an ARM64 Linux distribution and follow Apple’s documented translation approach for Intel binaries. Compatibility can still depend on the application, libraries, system calls and any native extensions it uses.
This arrangement should not be described as equivalent to booting an Intel Linux distribution. Apple’s stated boundary is specific: translation operates on Intel binaries inside an ARM Linux VM, while the framework does not install or bootstrap an Intel Linux distribution on Apple Silicon.

Resource planning for a usable VM
Memory
A Linux desktop VM needs enough memory for the desktop environment and your applications, but the exact allocation depends on the distribution and workload. Start conservatively, observe host pressure and increase the allocation only when the guest needs it. Avoid quoting a universal minimum when the app, distribution and workload are not specified.
Storage
Reserve space for the virtual disk, Linux updates, user files and VM copies. A graphical installation can grow substantially after development tools and containers are added. Keep the VM on storage with sufficient free space for expansion and recovery copies.
CPU and emulation cost
An ARM64 guest on Apple virtualization avoids the architecture mismatch that forces emulation. An Intel guest may require CPU emulation, if the chosen application supports it, and should be evaluated separately. Because no common benchmark is available, treat any speed difference as workload-specific rather than a published ranking.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The VM will not boot
- Confirm that the ISO is complete and intended for ARM64.
- Check that the ISO is attached and selected in the boot order.
- Verify that the VM was created in the intended Apple virtualization or emulation mode.
- Recheck the app’s current Apple Silicon and macOS support notes.
The installer says the image is for the wrong architecture
Stop the VM and replace an x86_64 or amd64 image with an arm64 or aarch64 image. If the project truly requires Intel Linux, choose an application and mode that explicitly document emulation; do not assume the Apple Virtualization framework will install it.
The desktop is sluggish
Check whether the VM is emulating an Intel guest, whether host memory is under pressure and whether unnecessary background services are running in Linux. Compare only after fixing the architecture and resource configuration; otherwise you are measuring a setup error, not the app.
A tutorial does not match the interface
Look at the app version and configuration mode first. UTM’s QEMU settings and Apple virtualization settings are distinct, and commercial products change labels between releases. Use documentation for the installed version rather than screenshots from an older guide.
Fusion documentation does not answer your compatibility question
That is expected when the reference is Fusion 13.5.1 from February 2024. Find a current release note and compatibility matrix before committing a production VM or migration.

Choose UTM when configuration flexibility and a choice between Apple virtualization and QEMU matter most. Choose Parallels Desktop when a paid, guided workflow and vendor-provided Linux setup are worth the license, checking the current edition details first. Use Apple’s Virtualization framework when you are building software rather than merely running Linux. Treat VMware Fusion as conditional until its current Apple Silicon and macOS support is verified. In every case, begin with an ARM64 Linux image and decide explicitly whether you need an ARM operating system or only a way to run Intel Linux applications.
