There is no universal best Vintage Story host in 2026. For a small, vanilla group that wants the least setup, the official Simple Server Hosting service is the clearest documented fit: it costs 10 EUR per 30 days including VAT, runs in Central Europe, and supports up to eight concurrent players. It does not support third-party mods or uploading an existing world. Modded groups should shortlist third-party hosts and verify their current plans. Technically confident players can self-host for more control and no hosting subscription, provided they can keep a computer online and manage networking, updates, security, and backups.
Our top pick: Godlike.Host
If you want a rented server with more freedom than the official service, our top pick is Godlike.Host. It offers Vintage Story servers in 10 data-center locations, including Germany, Poland, Finland, the US East Coast and Singapore, so you can place the server near your players. Its Pterodactyl-based game panel includes SFTP/FTP access, up to three free backups a day with restore, a built-in mod installer and updater, and a task scheduler. Support is available 24/7 by live chat or ticket, and it offers free DDoS protection. See the current plans before you order.
Choose the hosting route that matches your group
Your decision is mainly about control versus convenience. The three practical routes are an official paid server, a third-party rented server, or a server you operate yourself.
Recommended Free Tools
| Route | Best fit | Main advantages | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official Simple Server Hosting | Up to eight players running an unmodded survival world | In-game dashboard, always-online server, developer support, predictable published price | Central Europe location; no third-party mods; no documented existing-world upload; no prereleases |
| Third-party provider | Groups needing mods, broader locations, or hosting controls | Potentially wider region choice, mod workflows, backups, file access and plan options | Features, prices, support and reliability vary; the official directory is not vetted and has no standardized comparison |
| Self-hosting | Hands-on users who can administer a computer and network | No recurring hosting subscription, full configuration and update control | You supply the always-on machine, internet access, security, backups, troubleshooting and maintenance |
Use the official service when simplicity matters more than mods or world migration. Use a third-party host only after checking its current Vintage Story version, mod installation process, data access, location, backup policy and support. Self-host when you value control and already have suitable hardware or are willing to maintain it.

Official Simple Server Hosting: the documented vanilla option
The official store lists Simple Server Hosting at 10 EUR per 30 days, VAT included. It provides an always-online server, an in-game dashboard and developer support, with up to eight concurrent players. The listed location is Central Europe. Confirm the price and terms on the official service listing before subscribing because service terms can change.
What the official service does well
- Players can use an always-online world without leaving a personal computer running.
- The in-game dashboard reduces the need for command-line administration.
- Support comes from the game developer rather than an unaffiliated host.
- The published eight-player ceiling makes it easy to determine whether the plan fits a small group.
Deal-breakers to check first
- No third-party mods: the current listing says mods cannot be installed.
- No existing-world upload: the listing does not provide a process for importing a single-player world.
- No prereleases: release candidates and stable releases are supported, but prerelease builds are not.
- Central Europe: players far from that region may experience more latency than with a nearer server.
- Eight concurrent players: a larger community needs another route.
What happens when payment expires
The store says an expired server is stopped and frozen. The world remains downloadable for 180 days after expiry. Treat that as a recovery window, not as a substitute for regular backups: download a copy before cancellation or expiry and keep it in a separate location.
Third-party hosting for mods and broader control
The official provider directory lists many commercial hosts, but it explicitly says providers are listed in no particular order and are “not vetted.” Inclusion is not evidence of uptime, support quality, value, security or current feature availability. No comparable market-wide price or performance survey establishes a single third-party winner.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to evaluate a provider
- Confirm version support. Ask which stable Vintage Story versions are available and how quickly the host supports updates.
- Verify mod handling. Check whether you can upload mod files, install dependencies, change load order and remove a broken mod without opening a support ticket.
- Check world management. Look for a file manager or SFTP access, world upload and download, scheduled backups, retention length and restore testing.
- Choose a nearby region. Ask for the actual datacenter country or city, not merely a broad “Europe” or “North America” label.
- Read update controls. Determine whether game updates are automatic, optional, scheduled or reversible. Automatic updates can break a modded world; manual control can leave an unpatched server exposed.
- Test support expectations. Check support hours, ticket response targets, escalation for crashes and whether staff will help with mod conflicts.
- Calculate recurring cost. Include the base plan, additional player slots, extra storage, backups, taxes and any setup or migration fees. The directory does not provide standardized prices.
- Clarify cancellation. Ask how long files remain available after nonpayment, how exports work and whether backups are deleted immediately.
Questions to send before paying
- Can I run my chosen stable version and pin it while testing a mod pack?
- Can I upload an existing world and download it later in an unmodified format?
- Are backups automatic, how many restore points are retained, and can I trigger a manual backup?
- Which network ports and protocols are exposed, and is the server behind a shared proxy?
- Can I restart, stop and change settings from the panel without staff intervention?
- What is the total monthly price in my billing region, including VAT or sales tax?
Do not assume a host supports a feature because another provider does. Capture the answers and the provider’s current terms before moving a valuable world.

Self-hosting: maximum control without a hosting subscription
Vintage Story supports local and internet multiplayer hosting. The official hosting overview explains that local hosting is suitable for people on the same building or network, but the host computer must remain on. Internet hosting requires a strong connection and may require additional hardware or software, port configuration and ongoing administration.
For a server that can remain online independently of the game client, use the dedicated server program described in the official dedicated-server guide. A normal survival world is estimated at 1 GB base RAM plus 300 MB per player, with four CPU threads recommended. This is the publisher’s rough, conservative estimate, not a guaranteed minimum or an independent benchmark; world size, mods, simulation activity and other services can raise demand.
Dedicated-server preparation checklist
- A computer that can stay powered on and connected whenever players need access.
- Enough memory for the base server, concurrent players, world growth, mods and the operating system.
- At least four CPU threads as a starting point for a normal survival world.
- A stable internet connection with adequate upload capacity and a router you can configure.
- Regular local and off-machine backups.
- An operating system compatible with the selected Vintage Story server version.
On Linux, the current system requirements page says the dedicated server needs .NET 10 and GLIBC 2.28 or higher. Check those requirements against the exact game version and distribution before installation; runtime requirements can change.

The official instructions use port 42420 by default. Their guidance calls for TCP and, for game version 1.20 onward, UDP as well. Forward only the required port to the server machine, reserve that machine’s local address in the router, and use a firewall to limit unwanted access. These settings are version-sensitive, so follow the instructions for your installed release in the multiplayer setup guide.

Dedicated servers use whitelisting by default from version 1.20. Single-player worlds opened to LAN do not use that same default. Review the whitelist before sharing the address, and remove players who no longer need access.
Practical self-hosting sequence
- Choose a dedicated machine or a computer that can remain on without interrupting normal use.
- Install the runtime and server files required by your Vintage Story version.
- Create a separate operating-system account or service context for the server where practical; avoid running unrelated software with elevated privileges.
- Start the server locally and confirm that it creates its configuration and world directories.
- Set the world name, player permissions, whitelist and any server-specific options.
- Keep the default port unless you have a reason to change it; document any change for every player.
- Allow the required TCP traffic and, for version 1.20 onward, UDP according to the official guide; configure router forwarding to the server’s fixed local address.
- Connect from another device on the same network first, then test from an external connection. A local test alone does not prove internet reachability.
- Create a repeatable backup routine and test restoring a copy before inviting the group.
- Record the installed game version, runtime version, firewall rules, port and backup location so another trusted person can recover the server.
Mods, worlds and updates: the deciding technical differences
Modded play
The official service currently cannot install third-party mods. If mods are central to your group, use a third-party provider that documents file access and mod management, or self-host. Keep the server’s mod set synchronized with every client, retain the exact versions used by the world, and make a backup before adding or removing a mod. A host that offers one-click installation is convenient, but you still need to verify dependencies and compatibility.
Moving an existing world
The official listing currently has no world-upload process. An existing single-player world therefore requires a third-party host or self-hosting route that lets you upload the world files. Export and retain the original before migration. After uploading, check spawn location, permissions, loaded chunks, player inventories and mod dependencies before deleting the source copy.
Controlling game updates
Stable releases and release candidates are supported by the official service; prereleases are not. Third-party and self-hosted servers differ in whether updates are automatic. For a modded world, stage updates on a copied world first, record the previous version and keep a rollback path. For an unmodded group, automatic updates may reduce maintenance but can still create a short interruption or change behavior.

- You are the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity forever - but things have gone terribly wrong.
- The space station has been overrun by hostile aliens and you are now being hunted.
Latency, player count and hardware planning
Geographic distance affects responsiveness, especially when players interact with moving entities, containers or rapidly changing terrain. The official service lists Central Europe, so a group concentrated elsewhere should ask whether that location is acceptable. Third-party hosts may offer more regions; self-hosting places the server wherever your connection and machine are located.
| Planning factor | What to account for |
|---|---|
| Players | Official plan: up to eight concurrent players. Self-hosted capacity depends on memory, CPU, world activity and connection quality. Third-party slot limits depend on the selected plan. |
| Memory | Official estimate for a normal survival world: 1 GB base plus 300 MB per player. Add headroom for mods, larger worlds and other services. |
| CPU | Four CPU threads are recommended by the official guidance for a normal survival server; this is not a performance guarantee. |
| Location | Choose a datacenter or home connection near most players when possible. |
| Storage | Allow for world growth, logs, mod files and multiple backup generations. |
| Network | Plan for stable upload, router forwarding, firewall rules and the required TCP/UDP behavior for your game version. |
A small computer with 16 GB of RAM can be a reasonable self-hosting starting point, but no particular model has been tested here. Treat the official memory figure as a sizing baseline, monitor actual usage and leave room for the operating system and backups.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Backups and failure recovery
A server is not backed up merely because its provider advertises storage. Keep at least one copy that is independent of the running server and periodically verify that it can be opened or restored.
- Make a manual backup before updates, mod changes, configuration changes or migrations.
- Keep several dated generations rather than overwriting one file.
- Store a copy on a different device or location.
- Document who can access the backup and where the server files are located.
- After a crash, stop repeated restart attempts if the world is being modified, copy the current files, then restore the newest known-good backup to a separate test directory.
For the official service, the documented 180-day post-expiry download window gives you time to retrieve the world, but it is still safer to export it before the subscription ends.

Troubleshooting by symptom
Players cannot connect from outside the home network
- Confirm the server is running and listening on the configured port.
- Check that the router forwards port 42420 to the correct local address.
- Apply the TCP and, for version 1.20 onward, UDP requirements in the official instructions.
- Check the host firewall and any carrier-grade NAT or double-router arrangement.
- Test from a genuinely external network rather than another device on the same Wi-Fi.
A player is rejected even though the server is online
- Confirm the player is on a compatible game version.
- Check the dedicated-server whitelist, which is enabled by default from version 1.20.
- For a modded server, compare mod names, versions and dependencies on the client and server.
The world becomes unstable after a mod or update
- Stop the server and preserve the current files before changing anything else.
- Restore a pre-change backup on a copy.
- Reintroduce updates or mods one at a time and record the working combination.
- Ask a third-party host whether it can pin the previous version or restore a snapshot; do not assume it can.
Decision guide: which route should you pick?
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fast setup for a small vanilla group | Official Simple Server Hosting | Published 10 EUR/30-day price, in-game controls and developer support, provided Central Europe and eight players fit. |
| Third-party mods | Shortlisted third-party hosts or self-hosting | The official service does not support mods; other routes can provide file access and version control. |
| Importing a single-player world | A host with verified upload tools or self-hosting | The official listing has no current world-upload process. |
| Full administrative control | Self-hosting | You control files, updates, networking and hardware, while accepting all maintenance responsibility. |
| Players spread across regions | A provider with a verified nearby location | The official listing specifies Central Europe; another route may reduce distance for your group. |
| No recurring hosting bill | Self-hosting or local LAN play | You avoid a hosting subscription but provide the machine, electricity, connectivity and administration. |
Local-only play is the simplest self-hosting case when everyone shares one network. For internet play, budget time for port access, security, updates and recovery—not just the server software.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload my existing single-player world to the official service?
The current listing does not provide a world-upload process. Use a verified third-party upload workflow or self-host instead.
How many people can join the official server?
The listed service supports up to eight concurrent players.
Can I host Vintage Story myself?
Yes. The official guides document local, internet and dedicated-server hosting. Remote access requires network configuration, and you remain responsible for maintenance and backups.
What port does a dedicated Vintage Story server use?
The official guidance uses port 42420 by default. For game version 1.20 onward, its instructions call for TCP and UDP; follow the guide for your exact version.
The Bottom Line
Choose the official service for a small, vanilla group that accepts Central Europe, eight players and no world uploads or third-party mods. Choose a third-party host only after verifying its current terms and mod, backup, location and update workflows; our top pick for a rented server is Godlike.Host, with its game panel, free backups with restore and a choice of 10 locations. Self-host when you want maximum control and can reliably operate the machine, network and recovery process.
