For a 2026 Vintage Story server, start with mods that solve a clear multiplayer problem—shared prospecting, automatic map notes, expanded ruins, building blueprints, trading, or administration—and verify every file against your exact game build before installation. The current community guides used for this list center on the 1.22 version family, but mod releases change independently. Server and client versions must match exactly, and client-side additions must be installed by each player.
Which Vintage Story server mods are worth using in 2026?
The strongest choices are not necessarily the largest overhauls. A reliable server pack usually combines a few quality-of-life tools with one content mod, then adds administration utilities only when the group needs them. The following mods recur across community hosting and mod-list guides. Treat the list as a shortlist, not a compatibility guarantee: open the official Mod DB entry for each mod, check its supported Vintage Story version, dependencies, loader information and changelog, and test it on a copy of the world first.
| Mod | What it adds | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carry On (also listed as Carry Capacity) | Quality-of-life improvements for carrying objects and increasing carry capacity | General survival servers where moving blocks or equipment is tedious | Confirm the exact Mod DB name. One guide recommends a stable 1.14.x release for servers, while 2.0 pre-releases require CarryOnLib; do not assume either label supports game version 1.22. |
| Auto Map Markers | Automatically places map markers for ore and berry bushes | Exploration-heavy worlds and groups that want less manual note-taking | Verify the current 1.22 build and whether every player needs a matching client file. |
| ProspectTogether | Records prospecting readings on the map and shares them with group members | Mining teams coordinating searches for deposits | Check group-sharing permissions and client requirements before deployment. |
| BetterRuins | Adds surface and underground ruins to explore | Long-running survival worlds that need more points of interest | World-generation content is safest to add before creating a new world; test carefully before adding it to an established save. |
| Primitive Survival | A broad early-game expansion covering fishing, trapping and related systems | Servers seeking a deeper, slower start | Because it changes several systems, test recipes, progression and mod interactions together. |
| QP’s Chisel Tools (Pantograph and Portfolio) | Copies, pastes and saves building designs between worlds and servers | Builders, creative projects and communities that repeat architectural patterns | Confirm both tool components and their supported game version; saved designs may not behave identically when blocks are missing. |
| Vinconomy | Player-run markets with stalls and trade passes | Social servers with an in-game economy | Agree on permissions and economy rules before enabling it; a market mod can alter the balance of a survival world. |
| Player Corpse | Provides a corpse-based recovery system after a player dies | Groups that want a clear, physical recovery target instead of scattered drops | Check how the current release handles despawn, protection and inventory recovery. |
| VSEssentials | Common administrative and teleport commands | Dedicated servers with moderators or remote administration needs | Give commands only to trusted roles and test permissions with a non-owner account. |
Carry On: useful, but resolve the naming and version trap
Community guides use both Carry On and Carry Capacity for what may be the same maintained lineage. One guide describes Carry On as a maintained fork of the older CarryCapacity project and points server owners toward a stable 1.14.x release. The same guide warns that 2.0 pre-release builds need an additional library named CarryOnLib. These numbers refer to mod releases, not proof of compatibility with Vintage Story 1.22. Before installing, search the Mod DB for the exact project name, read the dependency list and select a file explicitly marked for your server’s game version. If the page offers both a stable and a pre-release branch, use the stable branch unless you have a reason to test the newer API.
Auto Map Markers and ProspectTogether: two different mapping jobs
Auto Map Markers reduces routine map maintenance by placing markers when the player encounters ore or berry bushes. ProspectTogether addresses a team problem: it records prospecting readings and makes those readings available to members of the same group. They can complement each other, but they do not replace normal prospecting knowledge. Decide whether markers should be shared, local or permission-controlled, then test that behavior with two ordinary player accounts before opening the server to everyone.

BetterRuins: content that affects a world
BetterRuins adds surface and underground ruins, making exploration more rewarding. Any mod that contributes generated structures should be treated as a world-content decision rather than a cosmetic toggle. New structures may appear only in unexplored chunks, so adding the mod after players have mapped a large area can produce an uneven world. Make a backup, test generation in a fresh world and document the mod version in the server’s mod manifest before using it in a long-term save.
Primitive Survival: choose it for a changed opening, not a small tweak
Primitive Survival is described as a large early-game overhaul involving fishing, trapping and related systems. It is a better fit for a group that wants additional activities and a longer progression curve than for a lightly modified vanilla server. Have players test the first several in-game days together: confirm that recipes appear, that tools and catches can be used, and that the changes do not conflict with another food, hunting or progression mod.

The Pantograph and Portfolio tools are intended for copying, pasting and saving building designs across worlds and servers. Establish a shared process for exporting designs, recording the source block set and checking the destination world. A design that uses blocks unavailable on the destination server cannot be reproduced faithfully, so keep the tool versions and any required content mods aligned.
Vinconomy, Player Corpse and VSEssentials: social and administration layers
Vinconomy supplies stalls and trade passes for a player-run market. Decide who may create stalls, how currency enters the economy and what happens when a player leaves. Player Corpse changes death recovery into a visible location-based task; verify protection and despawn rules so players know whether a corpse can be looted or lost. VSEssentials is frequently described as a standard dedicated-server installation because it supplies administration and teleport commands. Treat it as privileged infrastructure: document each command, restrict operator access and test a rollback plan before granting permissions.
Version matching is the first compatibility rule
For a modded multiplayer session, the dedicated server and every connecting client should run the same Vintage Story version. Community hosting guides give a concrete failure example: a 1.22.2 server refusing a 1.22.1 client. Even when a patch appears minor, protocol or asset changes can prevent a connection. Record the full game version, mod file names and dependency versions in one place, and upgrade the server and clients as a coordinated change.

Do not copy a mod merely because its name appears in a recent list. The guides also flag Better Crops version 0.9.2 as “1.21 ONLY, DO NOT UPDATE.” That warning illustrates the rule: a file that worked on 1.21 may be deliberately unsuitable for 1.22. If a Mod DB page does not state support for your game build, leave the mod out or test it privately rather than guessing.

How to install mods on a Vintage Story dedicated server
Use an offline, backed-up test instance for the first installation. The server package ships with Vintage Story; its executable is stored in the game’s application folder, while the server’s worlds, configuration and other data are kept in a separate data folder.
- Identify the exact game build. Write down the server’s Vintage Story version, such as 1.22.x, and require every player to install that same version. Do not mix 1.22.1 and 1.22.2 merely because both are in the 1.22 family.
- Back up the world and configuration. Stop the server cleanly, copy the world save and the data directory, and label the backup with the date and planned mod versions. Keep the untouched copy outside the live server directory.
- Check each mod listing. On the official Mod DB, confirm the game’s supported version, stable versus pre-release status, required libraries, server/client designation and installation notes. Resolve ambiguous names such as Carry On versus Carry Capacity before downloading.
- Install required dependencies first. If a release requires a library—for example, the CarryOnLib dependency mentioned for Carry On 2.0 pre-releases—place the dependency and the main mod in the server’s configured mod path. A missing dependency normally produces a load error rather than a partially working feature.
- Configure the server’s mod path. On Linux, edit the
ModPathssetting in./data/serverconfig.json. Keep the firstModsentry because the base game files load from it, then add your own mod directory after that entry. Use a separate directory for downloaded mod archives if you want simpler backups. - Copy the mod archives while the server is offline. The server can read mod zip files from the configured path. Stop the process before changing the directory so a half-written archive cannot be loaded.
- Start the server and read the log. Look for successful discovery of each archive, dependency errors, duplicate files, version warnings and world-generation failures. Do not invite players until the log is clean enough to explain.
- Install client-side files for every player. A server cannot supply a client-only mod automatically. Send players the exact compatible file and dependency list, and give them a versioned manifest so everyone installs the same release.
- Test with a small group. Join with two ordinary accounts and exercise the mod’s actual multiplayer behavior: shared map data, market permissions, corpse recovery, teleport commands or copied structures. Only then replace the live instance.
Linux dedicated-server setup for a modded world
Install the runtime that matches the game version
The current version-specific mapping in the Vintage Story Wiki is:
| Vintage Story version | .NET runtime | Linux note |
|---|---|---|
| 1.22.0 and newer | .NET 10 | Install the runtime yourself on a normal Linux installation. |
| 1.21.0 through 1.21.6 | .NET 8 | Use the runtime required by that branch, not the 1.22 requirement. |
| 1.20.x down to 1.18.8 | .NET 7 | This applies to those older game branches. |
The Flatpak build bundles its runtime. An older multiplayer setup page still lists .NET 7 without distinguishing game versions; use the version-specific mapping above instead of applying that older instruction to a 1.22 server.
Launch the server
From the server application directory, Linux administrators can start the process with:

dotnet VintagestoryServer.dll
Alternatively, run:
./VintagestoryServer
The second form requires DOTNET_ROOT to be set correctly. Run the process under a dedicated service account, keep the working directory fixed and send output to a log that can be reviewed after restarts.
Open the network port
The default server port is 42420, and the launch option --port can override it. For remote players, forward that port from the router to the server host. From Vintage Story 1.20 onward, the wiki also calls for UDP forwarding, so configure both TCP and UDP unless your exact server documentation says otherwise. On Linux, allow the same protocols through the host firewall with the tool used by your distribution, such as firewalld, iptables or ufw. If local players can connect but remote players cannot, check the router mapping, host firewall, public address and whether the server is listening on the custom port.
Change configuration safely
The Linux configuration file is ./data/serverconfig.json relative to the server directory. The server reads configuration after a relaunch, not immediately when the file changes. Stop the server before editing. If you need to preserve the latest state, issue /autosavenow in the console and then /stop, edit the file, and start the process again. This matters for port changes, whitelist settings, mod paths and other startup options.
Check whitelist behavior
One hosting guide reports that the whitelist is enabled by default, but defaults can vary with the server package and configuration. Inspect your own server configuration and test a permitted and an unlisted account before announcing the address. Never assume that a player-facing setting has the same default after an upgrade.
Hardware and capacity planning
The Vintage Story Wiki gives a rough baseline of 1 GB of RAM plus 300 MB per connected player, with four recommended CPU threads. Treat those figures as a floor for a lightly loaded server, not a promise for a heavily modded world. Structure generation, large exploration areas, automation, map sharing and administrative utilities can all increase memory or CPU demand. Leave operating-system headroom, monitor memory pressure and test your intended player count with the complete mod set rather than estimating from an unmodded session.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Start with the wiki baseline only for a small, lightly modified group.
- Add RAM before the machine begins swapping; swapping produces severe tick delays.
- Prefer four or more available CPU threads when using content overhauls or hosting several active players.
- Keep backups and world files on storage with enough free space for multiple snapshots.
- Measure the real server under exploration and combat, not only while players stand in one base.
Docker option: convenient, but community-maintained
A community Docker image named ralnoc/vintagestory is available for administrators who prefer container deployment. It is not an official Vintage Story image. The documented mapping exposes port 42420 on both TCP and UDP, matching the protocol requirements described above. Pin the image tag, mount the data directory to persistent storage, back up the mounted world files and verify that the container’s game version, .NET runtime and mod path are the ones you intend to run. A container does not remove the need to match client versions or install client-only mods.
Common failures and how to recover
The server refuses a player with a version error
Compare the complete server and client version strings, not just the first two digits. Update or roll back the outlier, then confirm that the player’s mod files match the server’s manifest. The 1.22.2-versus-1.22.1 example shows why a patch difference can be enough to block a connection.
The server stops during startup after a mod is added
Stop the server, restore the backup if the world was touched, and read the first dependency or API error in the log. Remove the newest mod and its optional dependencies, start once to confirm the base server works, then add the files one at a time. Do not solve a missing dependency by downloading an arbitrary similarly named library; use the exact dependency named on the mod’s listing.
A feature works for the administrator but not for players
That usually indicates a client-side file, permission or group-setting issue. Test with an ordinary account, confirm that the player has the same client mod version, and inspect the mod’s permission configuration. For ProspectTogether, verify that both players are in the intended group. For VSEssentials, verify command privileges rather than granting broad operator access.
New ruins or other generated content do not appear
Check that the mod is loaded before exploring new chunks and that the world was generated with the expected version. BetterRuins content may not populate areas that players already visited. Test in a new world, then decide whether the uneven distribution is acceptable for the existing save.

The server ignores a configuration edit
Confirm that you edited the active instance’s ./data/serverconfig.json, not a similarly named backup or client directory. Save the world with /autosavenow, stop the process with /stop, verify the file contents, and relaunch. Startup-only settings do not update in a running process.
Remote connections fail while local connections work
Check that the server is listening on the intended port, that the router forwards 42420 or your custom port to the correct host, and that both TCP and UDP are allowed from 1.20 onward. Then inspect the Linux firewall and any cloud-provider security group. Testing from inside the same network can hide a router or public-address problem.
Three practical mod-pack approaches
Light quality-of-life pack
Use Carry On, Auto Map Markers and ProspectTogether for a small cooperative survival group. This combination targets carrying, navigation and shared mining information without changing the world’s core progression. Add VSEssentials only if someone will actively administer the server.
Exploration and survival pack
Combine BetterRuins with Primitive Survival after testing world generation and early-game progression in a disposable save. This creates a more substantial experience than a convenience pack, so document the versions and avoid adding or removing the content mods casually after players have invested time.
Community-build and economy pack
Use QP’s Chisel Tools for shared construction and Vinconomy for player markets, with Player Corpse if the group wants a visible death-recovery objective. Set build, stall and trade permissions before inviting the wider community, and keep a backup in case an economy or permissions change has unintended effects.

- Record the Vintage Story version, every mod filename, release number and dependency.
- Keep a clean backup from before each mod update.
- Test updates on a cloned world before changing the public instance.
- Require players to update client files at the same time as the server.
- Read changelogs for API, world-generation, permission and dependency changes.
- Remove abandoned or unmaintained files rather than leaving them enabled indefinitely.
- Recheck the official Mod DB listing whenever a guide’s version label conflicts with the current game build.
- After every change, test login, movement, map sharing, commands, death recovery and the mod’s main feature with a non-administrator account.
The practical answer for 2026 is to build a small, documented 1.22-compatible set rather than install every mod on a list. Begin with one or two quality-of-life tools, verify exact server/client compatibility, back up before content changes and add larger systems only after a controlled test. That approach gives the server the benefits of mods without making an unknown release, dependency or world-generation change responsible for an unrecoverable save.
