Valheim is the best all-purpose choice if your group wants a persistent shared world with exploration, sailing, longhouse construction, base building, and boss progression. Choose Tribes of Midgard instead when up to 10 players need structured, action-focused sessions. Pick ASKA if the appeal of Viking survival is running a living settlement: villagers can work, craft, hunt, and fight alongside the players.
The right game depends less on its Viking setting than on how your group wants to spend an evening. The three games cover different co-op patterns: an ongoing sandbox, repeatable objective-driven runs, and a colony simulator with direct survival combat.

Which Viking co-op game should your group choose?
Choose Valheim for a world that stays yours
Valheim is the safest default when the group wants to create one shared world, return to it repeatedly, and decide its own pace. The official FAQ explicitly describes it as playable either single-player or cooperatively. Its official site emphasizes raising Viking longhouses, building bases, sailing, and exploring, while the game’s progression gives a group a sequence of bosses to prepare for and defeat.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis format suits friends who may not all be online at the same time. A host can maintain the world, or the group can use an independent dedicated server, so the settlement does not have to be rebuilt for every evening. The trade-off is that Valheim does not provide the clearly published 10-player specification found for Tribes of Midgard; groups should verify their intended hosting arrangement before planning a very large gathering.

Choose Tribes of Midgard for the largest documented party and clear goals
Tribes of Midgard is the strongest fit for a larger, organized group. Norsfell’s official press kit specifies online PvE co-op for 1–10 players. That makes it the only game in this comparison with an explicit, source-backed maximum group size.
Its design is also more structured than a purely persistent sandbox. One mode centers on preventing Ragnarök by fighting Giants, creating a clear defense objective for a session. Survival Mode opens the experience up: the group can explore at its own pace, gather materials, craft armor and weapons, and build a Viking home. The result is a useful middle ground for players who want survival systems and construction without committing to one uninterrupted world.
Choose ASKA for villagers and colony management
ASKA is the distinctive choice when the group wants to manage a Viking community rather than only operate as a party of adventurers. Its developer describes a mythic open-world survival simulator in which players rally villagers and expand a settlement. The Steam description adds the colony-simulation layer: villagers and players work, craft, hunt, and fight together.

Valheim: the best persistent co-op Viking sandbox
What makes its co-op loop work
Valheim’s strength is continuity. The group can establish a base, improve it over multiple sessions, sail to new areas, gather resources, and prepare for boss progression without resetting the entire experience at the end of an evening. Construction is not a side activity: longhouses and bases give the party a visible home and a practical center for future expeditions.
Because the official site supports independent, player-hosted servers, the group can choose between a world run by one friend and a dedicated-server arrangement. A player-hosted world is simple for a small regular group, while a dedicated server is better when people need access even if the usual host is unavailable. The cited material does not establish a universal player cap, so hosting capacity and the group’s own hardware or service choice should be checked before inviting a large number of players.
Best activities for a Valheim group
- Build a shared home: assign a main base location, then let each player add a longhouse, workshop area, storage section, or defensive extension.
- Explore by land and sea: sailing gives the party a way to reach new areas, while on-foot expeditions can focus on local resources and preparation.
- Prepare for bosses: use the persistent world to gather materials, improve equipment, and coordinate a group attempt rather than rushing into every encounter.
- Keep the world active: a shared server lets returning players continue construction and resource work between major expeditions.
How to set up Valheim cross-play
The official cross-play FAQ documents a join-code flow and dedicated-server support for supported PC/Xbox combinations. Use this sequence when friends are not all on the same platform:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Start or select the world or dedicated server. Decide whether the world will be hosted directly by a player or kept on an independent server.
- Enable cross-play. Cross-platform joining depends on cross-play being turned on for the supported setup.
- Open the pause menu as host. Copy the join code shown there.
- Send the code to the other players. Friends use the game’s join flow and enter the code rather than relying on a platform-specific friend list.
- For a dedicated server, confirm its cross-play setting. The official FAQ states that Xbox players can join a dedicated server when cross-play is enabled.
If someone still cannot connect, first verify that the host is running the intended world or server and that cross-play is enabled. A join code copied from a different session or a server configured without cross-play will not solve a platform mismatch.

Who should not pick Valheim first?
Valheim is a weaker first choice for a group that needs a fixed objective every night, a published 10-player specification, or a colony-management system in which non-player villagers carry out jobs. Its appeal comes from an ongoing world and self-directed building, so players who prefer short, tightly framed runs may get more value from Tribes of Midgard.
Tribes of Midgard: structured action for up to 10 players
The 1–10-player specification
Norsfell’s official press kit describes Tribes of Midgard as a blend of survival and action RPG for 1–10 players, with online PvE co-op. Treat that number as a product specification, not as an independent measurement of active communities or server performance. It answers the practical party-size question: this is the comparison’s clearest option for a group larger than a typical small co-op party.
How its two modes change the evening
The session-based Ragnarök-focused mode gives the group an immediate job: defend against the threat by fighting Giants. That structure is useful when everyone has a limited window to play or when the party wants a run with a recognizable beginning, escalation, and objective.
Survival Mode is less constrained. The official game information describes exploring at the group’s own pace, crafting armor and weapons, and building a Viking home. It preserves the survival and construction elements while removing some of the pressure of a single defense objective. A group can therefore choose an action-heavy run one night and a more exploratory building session the next.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
How to divide a large party
- Objective lead: keeps the group focused on the current Ragnarök-defense priority when playing the session-based mode.
- Combat roles: class choices let players specialize rather than bringing identical loadouts.
- Scouting and exploration: identifies routes and resources when the party shifts into Survival Mode.
- Builder and crafter: maintains the Viking home and turns gathered materials into usable armor and weapons.
This division is a planning suggestion based on the documented class, crafting, exploration, and building systems; the cited material does not prescribe a mandatory party composition.
Who benefits most from Tribes of Midgard?
Pick it when attendance changes from night to night, the group wants a clear shared goal, or the party is approaching the upper end of the explicitly documented player range. The session-oriented structure also reduces the pressure to maintain one long-running world. The trade-off is that it is not the purest choice for friends whose main objective is to keep expanding one settlement indefinitely; Valheim and ASKA put more emphasis on persistent or colony-style development.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.ASKA: Viking survival with a living settlement
The colony layer
ASKA’s central distinction is that the settlement is populated by villagers with useful work. The developer presents the game as building a thriving colony from nothing, while Steam identifies survival crafting, colony simulation, base building, Vikings, and online co-op. The description says villagers and players work, craft, hunt, and fight together.
That means a successful session can involve more than a combat expedition. Players may expand the settlement, organize the tribe’s work, gather what the village needs, and then defend the community or venture out. Friends who enjoy management games will find a different kind of co-op conversation here: deciding which jobs matter now, where to expand, and how to balance routine production with danger.

What to expect from Early Access
Steam lists ASKA as Early Access, with the listing dated June 20, 2024. Feature names and availability can change during development, so confirm the current build and multiplayer requirements before a group buys or schedules a long campaign. The authoritative material does not provide a fixed maximum player count, sales figure, or performance benchmark; do not assume that its online co-op supports the same party size as Tribes of Midgard.
Best group for ASKA
ASKA suits friends who are happy to assign responsibilities and watch a settlement develop over time. It is less ideal for a group that only wants immediate, class-based action or a tightly bounded defense run. The game’s appeal is the interaction between direct survival and the villagers’ ongoing contribution to the tribe.
Persistent sandbox or repeatable sessions?

Construction, combat, and management compared
Construction
Valheim treats building as the foundation of a persistent world: the group raises longhouses and bases that support future exploration. Tribes of Midgard includes home building primarily within its more open Survival Mode. ASKA makes construction part of a wider settlement system, where expansion is connected to villagers and their jobs.
Combat
All three games include survival-related danger, but their emphasis differs. Valheim connects combat to exploration and boss progression. Tribes of Midgard foregrounds action RPG combat, class choices, and the task of fighting Giants to prevent Ragnarök. ASKA combines direct fighting with villagers who can fight alongside the players.
Management
ASKA is the clear specialist. Its villagers give the settlement an operational layer absent from the descriptions of the other two games. Valheim asks players to manage resources, construction, and expedition preparation themselves. Tribes of Midgard focuses more on party coordination, classes, and mode objectives than on running a populated colony.
Practical planning checklist for a friends’ group
- Count the likely players. If the party may reach 10, Tribes of Midgard is the only option here with that maximum explicitly documented by an official source. For Valheim and ASKA, verify the current hosting or platform limits before committing.
- Decide whether progress must persist. Choose Valheim for a continuing shared world, Tribes of Midgard for repeatable objectives, or ASKA for a settlement that grows through colony management.
- Agree on the building-to-combat balance. Construction-heavy groups should start with Valheim or ASKA; groups that want action RPG pressure should start with Tribes of Midgard.
- Check platform arrangements. Mixed PC/Xbox Valheim groups should follow the documented join-code or dedicated-server process and enable cross-play. Do not assume equivalent cross-play support for the other games without checking their current platform information.
- Set expectations for development status. ASKA is Early Access on Steam, so its systems may change. Plan shorter trials before treating it as a long-term campaign.
Final recommendation
Start with Valheim if you want the least complicated recommendation: it combines co-op, a persistent world, sailing, exploration, longhouse and base construction, and boss progression, with documented player-hosted and dedicated-server options. Choose Tribes of Midgard when party size and structured action matter most; its official 1–10-player specification and Ragnarök-defense mode make the group format unusually clear. Choose ASKA when the defining fantasy is building and operating a Viking tribe, not merely surviving as a small band of adventurers, and be prepared for Early Access changes.
